Mobile me to iCloud help needed
Hi All, A long-time client of mine needs a little bit of help with setting up iCloud. It's now an issue for her because she needs to travel in a week and wants to sort it prior to leaving. I can't help as I am working full-time so I can no longer do consultant work. She is a professional person, friendly and courteous. If anyone can spare an hour in the Fremantle area she will be most grateful. Please contact me off list for more information. Re: I'm about to give up...
For the past 3 years my job has involved moving mountains of disparate email onto a centralised server. IMAP has proven to be the simplest and most robust method to do this when there is some diversity between 'ends'. Additionally it has consistently given the best results in terms of 'mail state' ie read, replied-to etc. Having said all that, there is no perfect results, just best ones ;) Good luck Paul -- The WA Macintosh User Group Mailing List -- Archives - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/archives.shtml Guidelines - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/guidelines.shtml Settings Unsubscribe - http://lists.wamug.org.au/listinfo/wamug.org.au-wamug

If another option might help you can use an IMAP enabled email account (nearly all email accounts) to push all the messages 'up'. Then back down again with the same account but into the mac. Re: Sad tale of woe
Hi Mac, Might I also pass on our strategy for preventing dogs chewing and digging. Go to your nearest Op-Shop and buy a large bag of old unloved stuffed toys. Should run you less than $5. Now spread the toys around near something, your shoe maybe(not your new iPad), that is not for the dog. When the dog goes for the bad thing tell it it is bd, then shove one of the toys in its mouth and play with it telling it is good. The trick, at least initially, is to have many toys lying around so that it never takes more than a couple of seconds to find one and start a game. Hi Merv 10.4 might not upgrade your 10.2 without going through 10.3 first. I'm not sure. You could erase and install 10.4. This will mean, unless first copied elsewhere, any data will be erased too. Data such as documents, files, folders, non-Apple applications and their preferences. The Migration Assistant can be useful for this but I am unaware if it can do 10.2 - 10.4 migrations. Re: Google+ Invites [First 15]
Hi All, Yes, scepticism is a healthy thing. Fear however clouds our judgement. Many sites out there, not just social networking ones, require information from their members to function meaningfully. So if Google+ requires information as a cost to the user it must offer a benefit as a reward. It is up to the individual user to assess if the deal is a good one for them. I am still yet to see any risk in this and I fear there is unfounded fears being whipped up here. I am not saying 'join Google+'. I am saying be realistic. You take a bigger risk eating chicken from a bayne marie but you do it, no? Sure FB has had some bad things happen, but do you hear Today Tonight shouting about the benefits from their rooftop? Or Ronni for that matter? You need to remember that no social situation is without risk; 'don't mention war or politics at the dinner table'. The risk is that you will show your opinion leaving you open to opposing views. Big woop. If you don't like that kind of heat why would you consciously ask to be allowed in the kitchen? A: for the benefits of an open conversation with other people. You weigh the risk(?) and make the choice. Sorry but I'm a bit hung up on that word risk. To me it comes across as hyperbole. I Stopped iPhoto's Faces from constant scanning.
Hello 'muggers Faces has never worked for me. It just span endlessly without result for a long, long time, through pref resets, Library rebuilds and OS rebuilds. I have never wanted the feature anyway and Apple does not want it to be 'disablable'. The only faces to ever appear on the 'board' were identified through Facebook, annoying to say the least. I have trawled the net to find a solution and none have worked or I considered them too cavalier to apply. Eventually I just tried to ignore it. This never lasts for me. So today another forum trawl but this time a new tip and it wasn't 'hacky'. I went to Faeces, selected all the face thumbnails there and deleted them. The scan ceased. It had *never* ceased before. Hoorah! I restarted iPhoto because it still seemed too good to be true and lo, two new faces appeared. The scan did not hang again though. I nuked them anyway, restarted and all is still quiet. Of course I had a current backup before attempting any of the above. No need for me to have another calming chamomile tea, I can has coffee! 1. If I remove Office 2004 will I still be able to read the 2004 era files (including emails and contacts details) by using Office 2011? If by Office 2004 you mean you were using Entourage then no I don't think so as Entourage keeps them all in a database that pretty much only it can open. I would import them all into your new Outlook. Once you are sure you also have a backup of the old stuff too, you have already said that you do, you could remove the old database but I wouldn't especially bother unless it was more than say a couple of GB. It's all in ~/Documents/Microsoft User Data/Office 2004 Identities/ 2. Can I backup documents and emails to a DVD and then delete them from the hard-drive? You should be :-) Individual emails could be saved as PDF. Documents can go straight onto a DVD. 3. I assume I should make the backup copies before I remove Office 2004. Is this necessary (Ronni – please relax, I have made a backup using Time Machine and another using SuperDuper already). That's just the software, more important is what you do with your old database. If it fits, the Office 2004 Identities folder could go on a DVD. If you wanted Outlook to import it later it could get it from that DVD. 4. Can I use Super Duper to target a particular application or folder and set it to backup only that application or folder? Re: HD Jumpers
While I can't say for sure what is going on I can say that I have had sketchy results adding additional drives to G4 towers of various flavours. I believe it is the IDE controllers. The main 100MHz bus sometimes hates second drives attached to it and in my opinion will affect the boot drive's performance if it does work anyway. Depending on model there is a 66MHz bus which is often vacant, good for dumb storage but I would not have software there due to the speed hit on this slower bus. The 33MHz bus that the optical drive is on also can take a HDD but the speed. I made these issues go away by purchasing an ACard 133MHz (2 port, supports 4 drives) IDE controller from Daniel Kerr. Sonnet make good ones too. I use this alone, I'm out of love with those onboard controllers ;-) Good Luck Paul -- The WA Macintosh User Group Mailing List -- Archives - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/archives.shtml Guidelines - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/guidelines.shtml Unsubscribe - mailto:wamug-unsubscr...@wamug.org.au

Re: Firefox crashing
Hi John, If you are still having this problem try this in Terminal: /Applications/Firefox.app/Contents/MacOS/firefox-bin -profilemanager (Copy the above line Open Terminal 'Applications/Utilities/Terminal' paste the line into Terminal press return) If the Profile Manager opens (headed Firefox - Choose User Profile) then I believe that implies that Firefox is ok but your 'Profile' is corrupt. You then have two choices, click the Exit button and reassess or click Create Profile and ensure to name it meaningfully. Now select this new Profile and click the Start Firefox button with crossed fingers. If it starts you are good to go aside from you will have no bookmarks. Regarding Add-ons; others here may be able to say if this could have an impact on Add-ons which you may have installed. They could be re-added later even. Suffice to say that your original Profile remains untouched and can be switched back to at will via Terminal as above. Quit Firefox first of course :-) If it works and you want to keep the new Profile and retrieve your previous Bookmarks do this in Firefox: Go to Bookmarks menu OrganiZe Bookmarks There are 4 buttons on the top left, click the 4th 'star' button choose Import HTML select From an HTML File click Continue navigate to *your* Library/Application Support/Firefox/Profiles select your original 'blahblah.default' Profile folder (mine is saeqtdk7.default) select 'bookmarks.html' If this doesn't contain your bookmarks read on. Occasionally there is more than one bookmarks.html there with numerically incremented names. Just import each one and look at them in Bookmarks manager, you can then organise them as you see fit. Now it's typed it doesn't sound so simple but I believe it is ;-) Good luck Paul -- The WA Macintosh User Group Mailing List -- Archives - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/archives.shtml Guidelines - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/guidelines.shtml Unsubscribe - mailto:wamug-unsubscr...@wamug.org.au

Mine cost $35 from Nextbyte who didn't realise they had it in stock. I would use S-Video. If you did this you would also need to use an audio cable from the Mac mini, my guess is you can use either analogue to the TV or digital to a Receiver if you have one. Re: NEW MacMin has a HDMI Port!
Cable prices can be quite bogas really. A year or so back I wanted an RCA-style digital coax cable, so I went into Retravision determined to pay whatever they wanted and the young'n there said 'nah you don't need that, Audio RCA works for me at home' I asked if he knew they were wired differently, he just shrugged and left me to it. On my third man-look I saw it; bottom rack, hidden by better stocked items above (probably HDMI;-), covered in dust: Belkin 2m digital coax. The price sticker said $299. Wow. Then I noticed a newer sticker, they were having a sale, $29. After the bloke at the counter suggested his boss might have a mushroom habit, money cheerfully changed hands. Once home I hit google, I could not find this item anywhere in Australia for less than $150. Score. Hi Tim, Sounds like hardware issues. The first port of call here is to rule out the RAM, so if you have some spare RAM that will suit pop that in to see if the glitches and freezes go away. My guess however is like yours, logic board or graphics hardware. I am personally yet to see Apple Hardware Test find a fault. I have used it many times on machines with hardware issues so am not sure what it IS capable of finding. Also worth noting is 'Capacitor Plague'. Some G5 iMacs are easy to open so if yours is one of these lay it face down on something soft, unscrew and lift the back to see if the cylindrical capacitors here, there and everywhere on the board have any bulging or discolouration of their tops. Re: LP recording software
Hi Walter, Yes that is true, regardless of those software being installed. If you switch the input to Internal Microphone (if it actually has one) you will then see a response on the meter as you speak. You would also be able to record that input using Audacity, Quicktime, Wiretap etc. If it does not have a microphone you could plug 'something' into the 'Line In' port to perform the above test. Something that you *know* is sending output over it's cable. Please note that audio input does NOT require Audacity etc. to be installed. What it does require is that the device receiving the audio signal (USB sound device, built in sound hardware, microphone etc) is properly installed into the Operating System. This is where I think your troubles lay. Let me know how you get on. Hi Nathalie, It sounds like your modem if fine if you can make a connection from Windows. I would try connecting to that server using it's actual IP address. If you don't already know it your IT folk will tell you or you could do this in Terminal: host 'server address' then press enter to be given it's IP address. That address is minus the 'smb://' and would look like server.ecu.edu.au This should tell you it's IP address from a DNS server. Once you know the IP of the server then you just substitute it for the name i.e. smb://123.456.0.1/ Good luck Paul -- The WA Macintosh User Group Mailing List -- Archives - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/archives.shtml Guidelines - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/guidelines.shtml Unsubscribe - mailto:wamug-unsubscr...@wamug.org.au

I cannot give specific advice on your question but I would like to advise that instead of trying to use other clients the way you used eudora, try to see how other clients 'want' to do things. In my opinion eudora was an awful piece of software, mainly from a support perspective and noting about the interface, however the amount of wailing and gnashing of teeth upon it's removal either tells me it *was* good software or it says it was merely addictive. Cant say for sure except I am pleased it is almost extinct at work now. According to some other forums you may need 7zip for Mac or UnrarX.
