Re: [WAMUG} AGM Meeting

2021-05-31 Thread Peter Curtis
Hi Maureen
Due to senility on by part I have managed to pay my wamug annual fees twice!
This is not a problem and I’m happy to leave it so and use the extra payment as
an early payment for next year.
I would appreciate that this is recorded somewhere for future reference.
Kind regards
Peter Curtis

Re: [WAMUG} Apple Mail

2021-03-21 Thread Peter Curtis
Hi Stephen
What you say is correct! However, at the moment when put on ‘All inboxes’ it
shows no emails, when put on one of my actual mailboxes (e.g.
j...@augold.com.au) it shows the current emails in that box. Or, when put on
augold.com.au it shows those emails, but when on ‘All inboxes it shows nothing?
Kind regards
Peter

[WAMUG} Apple Mail

2021-03-20 Thread Peter Curtis
Hi all
In Apple Mail I usually use ‘All inboxes’ with a couple of mailboxes within.
Now when I choose ‘All inboxes’ it shows nothing and I have to go to each
mailbox separately to view the mail within them. Can anyone suggest a reason
for this? or a setting? I am not aware of changing anything.

Hi Peter
We run about 10 different emails from the domain, I’m the primary account
holder and it doesn’t happen with any other email address.
I’ll have a look anyway but I don’t think it’s that.

Re: emails

2020-11-24 Thread Peter Curtis
Hi Peter

We are not using iCloud email addresses
We are using the native Apple Mail application.
I’ve just checked her iPad and she only has her email address and credentials,
not mine. I do have her email credentials on mine for various reasons. I don’t
mind her getting my emails but the fact she does is annoying. She, on the other
hand, doesn’t want them at all.
Rules don’t appear to have special rules at all.
I hope this clarify’s it for you
Thanks for your assistance
Kind regards
Peter

Re: emails

2020-11-24 Thread Peter Curtis
Hi Stephen
We used to use the same Apple ID but haven’t for many months.
My wife wanted her own ID and got one.
The emails go to her (Apple) computer and her iPad, she does not use her phone
for emails.
Many thanks

Re: Music

2020-06-28 Thread Peter Curtis
Hi
95% of my music is off cassettes, records and CD’s! I’m not looking to avoid
buying music, or giving it to others so they can avoid buying it. It’s just the
simplicity I had before with iTunes seems to me to have been removed. I have
found solutions to my current situation, just find the constant changes to
shore up their profits annoying. When I purchased most of my music the costs
were excessive due to their protections, it looks like they are moving towards
that again in one way or another. I was just wondering if there was a
replacement more like iTunes and less like Music.
Kind regards
Peter

Hi Daniel
I’ve still to read your recommended link and will do so tomorrow, but from what
I’ve seen of it, it also says it will appear in the Finder window with perhaps
a request to pair or trust the item but because it doesn’t show in the Finder

The iPhone doesn’t show in the Finder window, nor does my iPad? and I’ve used
two different cables to make sure. The iPhone and the iPad show up in Photo’s
so it shouldn’t be the connection, but what?
I’ll read the recommended link in full tomorrow

Re: Backup iPhone

2020-06-17 Thread Peter Curtis
Hi
I’ve plugged in using a USB connection rather than Lightning, older phone 6SE
and about a 3 yr old MacBookPro.
Doesn’t show up on my brothers new MacBook with his iPhone 6S, or my iPhone SE?
Surely they aren’t too old?

I have an iPhone 6 SE and I get the bell with a line through it and a note
saying Silent Mode On when I turn it on, and when turning off get the bell
without the line and a note saying Silent Mode Off. It’s not huge but I can see

You can still purchase a stand alone version although it’s well hidden! see
below.

If you'd like to still purchase a standalone licence for 1Password 7 it's not a
problem at all. You can download 1Password 7 by visiting this link
(https://1password.com/downloads) once downloaded and installed you, you can
launch 1Password 7. You will see the option to subscribe or purchase a
Standalone licence. 

Kind regards
Peter

I managed to get into the Apple ID account page OK only to find I’m already set
up for two factor authentication, the problem still exists. Should I try
turning off the two factor authentication and then turning it back on?

Hi Peter
Thank you for your suggestion!
I don’t have two-factor authentication set up and when I try to set it up
according to APPLE instructions I must go to System Preferences and choose
iCloud, then Security. Only problem is that when I go to System Preferences and
iCloud there is no option to select Security as it’s asking me to put in my
Apple ID then Password and then I go on the roundabout of it asking for Apple
ID and Password continually. The options of General, Contact, Security, Devices
and Payment aren’t there?
So I still have the same problem.

iCloud

2019-03-31 Thread Peter Curtis
Hi
I have a red circle with a 1 in it on my System Preferences on my MacBookPro,
on going into preferences this symbol is on the iCloud icon in there.
I clicked onto this and it asked for my Apple ID and Password, on supplying
this the computer thought for a while and then went back to the Apple ID screen
again. I re entered my ID and Password again and got the same result!
I used the ‘Forgot Apple ID or password’ option and reset my password.
Back to the iCloud icon in System Preferences (which still had the red circle
with the 1 in it) and was asked for my Apple ID and Password, when supplied
with that it thought for a while again and then reset to ask for Apple ID and
Password again.
I have done this several times to ensure that all was entered correctly, but no
change.
I can access the App Store with the new Apple ID and Password no problem.
If it was just in the System Preferences I would/could just leave it but it
pops up on my screen regularly.
I don’t actually use iCloud, so loss of any information is not a worry, just
the annoying pop up and of course curiosity?
I have made no changes to the computer that I’m aware of.
I would appreciate any thoughts?
Kind regards
Peter

Re: RANT WARNING! iiNet NBN

2019-02-16 Thread Peter Curtis
Hi
We had to go on the NBN shortly and on my brother in law’s recommendation I
tried Aussie Broadband. The result has been fantastic! Cheaper, guaranteed
Australian call centre (which makes a huge difference being older and deafer),
constant updates of what is going on (whilst connecting) Since connecting
absolutely no problems at all. I still keep waiting for the catch, but so far,
none. Perhaps I was just lucky, but I’m sold.
Kind regards

External USB hub

2019-01-15 Thread Peter Curtis
Hi everyone
I just have a query in relation to using a USB hub.
Can I plug in two different computers to the hub to access a printer? or must
the lead be swapped to each computer when being used.
This is in relation to both two Macs or one Mac and one PC.
Kind regards

Popup window in Safari

2018-12-02 Thread Peter Curtis
Hi all
I have a couple of queries someone may be able to assist with.
I’m trying to Export a PDF in Safari but when I go to Export is says Pop Up
Window Blocked! In macOS Mojave in Preferences there is no longer the ability
to block or unblock Pop Ups? Is it somewhere else?
Since upgrading to macOS Mojave it takes many many attempts to wake up my
laptop, usually I used to touch the keyboard or mouse and the computer would
wake up, now it takes up to 30 attempts to get it to wake up, even pressing the
start button doesn’t wake the computer! It always eventually does wake up but
it’s a pain as it is. Any suggestions?
Kind regards

Photo's

2018-04-23 Thread Peter Curtis
Hi
While we’re on the subject of photo’s, is there another program other than
“Photos” to store and control photographs? I must admit I’m not keen on
“Photos”, I’m not a big taker of photographs but have started to assemble all
my past photo’s and find “Photos” not easy, can’t seem to name photos as I want
and managing them is clunky, or is that just a user problem?

Hi all

I’m using VueScan for some documents which I need to email to another person on
their phone. I scan as .pdf yet the file sizes are large (3.5MB) for a 12 page
document. I’ve looked through the settings and preferences on ViewScan and
can’t see any way of reducing the size. Is this size normal for a 12 page
document? Is there any way I can reduce the size of the .pdf?

when I look up an item on the net thereafter everywhere I go I’m bombarded with
ads for the item I searched for previously?
How do I avoid this?
Kind regards

Hi every one
I have a couple of queries if someone could assist.
Preview doesn’t have a “Save as” function anymore, meaning you have to
“Duplicate” then do your alterations to an original copy? Is this correct or is
there another way?
What would be recommended program to reduce the size of .pdf forms (Preview) in
size? or is there an easy way I’m not aware of?
Thanks in anticipation

Re: Photo's

2016-10-30 Thread Peter Curtis
Thanks Ronni
I’d already cancelled the delete and tried again, this time it came up with the
fact Pictures can’t be deleted. It definitely didn’t do that the first time.
I’m now transferring the contents from Time Machine one by one
(apparently/hopefully successfully) although why Time Machine didn’t replace
the contents of Pictures the first time, I don’t know!
Hopefully all will be well.
Kind regards

Photo's

2016-10-29 Thread Peter Curtis
Hi everyone
I seem to have a problem with deleting my Pictures folder with iPhoto & Photo’s
and Photo Booth Library in it.
It started when I imported about 400 photo’s of a recent trip to Photo’s, they
had been previously sorted but when I imported them they became unsorted. I
started to resort them but it was taking forever so I decided I’d use Time
Machine to replace the Photo’s library (I’d just previously deleted the
iPhoto’s library as I don’t use iPhoto any more)
I went into Time Machine and got it to replace the Photo’s library, after a
considerable time it told me it couldn’t complete the replacement (for some
reason I didn’t record) so I thought OK I’ll use my Super Duper backup (which
had been done the day before) to replace the complete Pictures file. So I
trashed the Pictures folder and it said it was starting to do so, then said
“Moving “Pictures” to “Trash" and has kept that sign up for the last 14 hours.
The Pictures folder only contains the Photo Booth Library (8 bytes) since the
Time Machine rejection, but the Pictures folder is 6.47 GB so obviously when
Time Machine stuffed up something else happened.
Shouldn’t the Pictures folder be trashed by now? or do I just have to wait?
Or can anyone suggest what else should I do?
Kind regards
Peter

Scrolling

2016-06-14 Thread Peter Curtis
Hi all
Since yesterday for some reason I’m finding my scrolling almost unusable. I use
an old mac mouse with no visible scrolling wheel, just works by using a finger
on the front of the mouse.
Normally I have no problems but now when I scroll down it takes off like a
racing car going down four or more pages at a time, then when going back it
races way past where I was, no control at all.
I have tried adjusting in the mouse in the System Preferences without any
result.
Does anyone have any suggestions?
Could it be the actual mouse on the blink through old age?
If so, could someone recommend another mouse?
Kind regards

Re: GPS vs iPad mini

2016-04-12 Thread Peter Curtis
Hi Rod
I use a lot of GPS’s, mainly in the goldfields, both apps on the ipad and
individual units. What you are going to use the unit/s for probably the
determining factor of which one/type you get.
As it turns out I use several, sometimes at the same time, as each one can give
different information for what you require.
My main unit is an old Garmin 276c which is although very old technology
probably the most user friendly, and best suits my needs which are for areas
without roads.
The Hema is a dual off road/street gps which is a lot more expensive and can be
very complicated depending upon what your using it for. A lot of it’s maps are
very old and the updates are still well and truly out of date too. I think you
better off with an individual street gps and another one for country rather
than the combined one.
I also use Mud Maps on the iPad, it is miles better than Hema but the maps are
Eastern States centric. If they had maps for WA like they do for the east, it
would be fantastic. There is quite a difference between Mud Maps 2 and Mud Maps
3. Mind you, the maps for Hema are worse.
All in all, I have and use 5 gps’s and I would say the first thing you
establish is what you are going to use it for? that makes the choice of what to
use easier.
Kind regards
Peter

Thanks Rod

That was exactly the problem I had and the only way I got over it was with a
full restore.
OK now but frustrating at the time.

Update

2016-03-22 Thread Peter Curtis
Hi
I have just installed the latest update (9.3) on my wife’s iPad. It says Update
Complete and says just a few more steps to activate, but after stating it may
take a few minutes to activate your iPad, it states

Your iPad could not be activated because the activation server is temporarily
unavailable. Try connecting your iPad to iTunes to activate it or try again in
a couple of minutes.

I’ve been trying since last night without success including connecting it to
iTunes where it states

iTunes was unable to verify your device.
Please disconnect and reconnect your device.
If the error persists, please visit your nearest Apple Store for assistance.
To find your nearest Apple Store, click here.

I’ve turned the iPad off, tried a hard reset. What else can I do can anyone
suggest?

Taking to the nearest Apple Store is not an option at the moment, being in
Kalgoorlie

I’ve updated my iPad without problems since the attempted update of my wife’s.

Kind regards

Hi all
My brother has just got a new iPhone.
He’s forgotten his apple ID and when he goes to the “forgot apple ID” section
he has to put his name and email address in, which he does. He is then told
that’s not enough information and requests earlier emails. He swears he has
never had another email so cannot proceed past this point.
Any suggestions?

I was connecting with a USB. It appears the problem was a dud cord. In the

Adware Medic

2015-11-30 Thread Peter Curtis
Hi all, and in particular Ronni!
I looked up etresoft which you recommended to Alan previously and in reading a
little about it came up with two queries and was wondering if you could shed
some light?
In etresoft’s ‘about’ and ‘tips for a healthy mac’ they suggest using Adware
Medic which I have used in the past, however Adware Medic have been bought out
by Malwarebites and are now suggesting a new virus program in place of Adware
Medic. Does this remain in the ‘not needed’ category? or is this an exception?
Secondly they recommend not to use (in fact say never use) an App Zapper
program? Is this also the case?
Kind regards

Re: VPN

2015-07-30 Thread Peter Curtis
Thank you Ronni
On 30 Jul 2015, at 2:38 pm, Ronni Brown ro...@mac.com wrote:

 Hello Peter,

 Your question:
Your comment that you use a VPN when connecting to a Public Wireless
Network, does that mean you don’t feel the need for it in normal
 circumstances at home (or work)?

As long as both Networks are secure Networks.

Your work place might be using a VPN? I’m sure they would have a secure
Network in any case. You can check with your IT department as to how secure
 their Network is.

 You Home Network:
If you are connecting to a Wired (Ethernet) Network in your home, someone
would have to break into your house, plug into your Ethernet switch, hide
somewhere out of your sight to capture data passing over your network.

If you are connecting to a Wireless (Wi-Fi) Network:
If your Home Network does NOT have password-protected encryption - anyone
with an antenna sensitive enough to pick up your radio signals can eavesdrop
on traffic passing over your network. This could be a neighbour, someone in a
parked car, or a nearby business.

For a real defense, you must use password-protected encryption. Encryption
always requires a key. With Wi-Fi encryption, you don’t enter the key
directly, but instead enter a password that the system uses to generate or
 retrieve a key.

Three different encryption methods have been offered since 802.11b started
appearing in hardware in 1999, each of which supersedes the previous one.
WPA2 was the final version of WPA security that includes all the work done in
the 802.11i committee. WPA2 replaces the weaker WEP key with a
government-grade method favored by corporations. Any equipment released in
2003 or later can handle WPA2.
All Apple base stations released starting in 2003 handle WPA2.
An Apple 802.11n or ac base station can offer WPA/WPA2 protection, in which
both older and newer devices can join with either form of key; an 802.11b, g,
or a device connects via WPA, while an n or ac device uses WPA2.

Both WPA and WPA2 come in two versions: Personal and Enterprise.
The Personal versions allow the use of passphrases, long sequences of
text—minimum 8 characters, maximum 63 characters—that are converted into the
source material for generating an encryption key. The option to create a long
phrase gives a WPA/WPA2 passphrase the potential to be memorable, but more
characters in the phrase also adds entropy, the principle in cryptography of
introducing a greater inability for a key to be predictable and thus
obtainable by someone who doesn’t know it.

The Enterprise flavour of WPA and WPA2 requires a server to manage accounts,
but simplifies access by letting people enter a username and password. Apple
dropped support for setting up a base station with WPA/WPA2 Enterprise in
AirPort Utility 6.0 but restored it in version 6.1 (it’s never been in the
 iOS version at all).

Typically, WPA2 support, which is the default, is all that’s needed unless
you have equipment that’s more than a decade old.

 Hope that answers your question.

 Kind Regards,

 Ronni

A virtual private network, or VPN, is a special type of network connection

With the Federal Government's new data retention laws, we are all at risk of

My son recommends a VPN provider called Astrill

Re: VPN

2015-07-29 Thread Peter Curtis
Hi
Thanks Ronni
I was reading about the VPN on Choice and was wondering if I should as a matter
of course use one.
Therefor my question to you.
Security of and on computers is becoming more complex and I just wish to make
sure I am doing what is necessary for my own safety.
Your comment that you use a VPN when connecting to a Public Wireless Network,
does that mean you don’t feel the need for it in normal circumstances at home
(or work)?
I value your input on these matters.
Kind regards
Peter

 Hello Peter,

Why are you asking... what do you wish to know about a VPN (Virtual Private
 Network)?
I do use a VPN when I require to connect to Public Wireless Networks, like
those found at coffee shops, hotels, airports, and conferences.

A virtual private network, or VPN, is a special type of network connection
that encrypts all Internet traffic flowing between your device and
a VPN server somewhere on the Internet. Think of a VPN as a tunnel running
through your physical (Wi-Fi, cellular, or wired) Internet connection that’s
impenetrable from the outside but open on both ends. Since VPNs can encrypt
everything, they even make it safe to use an unencrypted Wi-Fi connection.

 Kind Regards,

 Hi Susan
No, I was asking (I guess Ronnie moreso) if she used a VPN. With Ronnie’s
full explanations would give me all I wanted to know.

iPod Nano

2015-04-25 Thread Peter Curtis
Hi
I have just purchased an iPod nano for my wife. She is very happy with it
except! She can’t find out how to shuffle the songs. I have looked but can’t
see how to, except to shake the nano to change the song. This shaking to change
is not acceptable for her, so can the nano be set to shuffle automatically?
Much appreciated

Printers?

2015-03-20 Thread Peter Curtis
Hi all

Looks like I need to replace my current printer, what’s the consensus on a
printer with A3 and A4 capabilities currently? I’m not a big user. Ink jet or
laser is fine.

Kind regards
