[WAMUG] IMac 2008 case

2023-01-19 Thread Peter Faulks via WAMUG
I have just removed a hard drive out of a dead iMac 2008, the housing is
still OK

I am about to throw it out unless someone needs a casing, no cracks or
scratches

Can pick up free from Parkwood if anyone interested, if not it goes in
the bin next week

Re: [WAMUG] Just a question.

2022-07-10 Thread Peter Faulks

Generally you may only need a DVD CD Player to upload your files

I purchased an Apple DVD CD attachment plugs into my lap top

happy to lend it to you but would need it back once you copied your
movies, data or music

If you want something permanent the Apple one works fine.

Foxtel or Fetch

2019-05-02 Thread Peter Faulks

Hello Wamug

With Foxtel shutting down all its Football (Soccer) content in the
next few weeks Liverpool FC, Man Utd TV etc. (permanently) I am
considering switching to another internet television service such as
Fetch or something else? and was wondering if any members have any
suggestions.

We currently have Foxtel iQ3 set top boxes (2) and my wife and I have
the usual viewing needs, she likes movies, BBC stuff like Downton
Abbey, Midsomer Murders and Home and Away etc and I like Sport (90%
EPL soccer) cricket, rugby and History channels which we record.

Would I need to change my internet provider (iinet) we are on NBN and
get reasonably good speed so any suggestion would be welcome.

I know this is slightly off topic but I need to ask the experts.

Can we install older OS

2018-12-26 Thread Peter Faulks
My son want to update his Mac Book Pro Lap Top mac but I have told
him High Sierra will not accept his Microsoft Office or Adobe suite,
mail etc. (Am I right in this?)

Is it possible to install a previous operating system like 10.6.8 on
his machine without having to upgrade to High Sierra? He wants to re
install for his boys to use for school work and has OS 10.6 at the
moment.

Hi Peter,

Did this fix your 'Mac stuck in boot mode'?

Click Restart , hold down Command-Option-R to boot
into<https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201314?utm_campaign=website_source=sendgrid%20email_medium=email>macOS
Recovery, and reinstall the operating system.

(Did you know that different versions of Command-R cause different
versions of macOS to be installed by macOS Recovery?
Check
out <https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204904?utm_campaign=website_source=sendgrid%20email_medium=email>this

Re: Download and upload speeds best carrier

2017-10-02 Thread Peter Faulks
We are in a black spot in Parkwood my ADSL2 on my Bob Wi-Fi is
1.3Mbps at best but we have been promised NBL by January, can
someone please suggest a reliable carrier so that we can obtain
solid and reliable speed. We are currently with Westnet (iinet) but
this system is constantly droppping out just when I want to upload
to my web site, I just can't wait to see speeds you guys are
getting. I am getting bombarded with sign up offers for NBN. We
actually have a satelite dish on our roof provided by the Government
because our network was so poor, now it's just sitting there!

Any help or advice would be welcome

Peter Faulks

I'm VERY envious. :-\

Hi Graeme,

What NBN Plan are you on? Are you FTTP or FTTN. You must be on a
fairly low NBN Plan to be receiving the download & Upload speeds
you mentioned below.

With NBN Download Speeds & Upload Speeds depend on what NBN
Broadband Plan you are paying for.
I've been on NBN FTTP since May 2014 with iiNet/Westnet on a $94.90
per month plan
My Plan is 100GB + 100GB (Peak + OffPeak) + 50Mbps Download /
20Mbps Upload + Fibre Phone (my own phone).

I rarely reach the 50/20 Mbps speeds of my Plan.
My SpeedTest results taken today:
1. Turn Off WI-FI - Connected via Ethernet CAT6 cable directly into
the NBN Termination Box UNI-D 1 Port

PingDownload Upload
4.8ms - 47.6Mbps18.9Mbps

2. Connected via WI-FI 5GHz Network (3TB Time Capsule)
PingDownload Upload
4.9ms 47.7Mbps18.9Mbps

3. Turn Off WI-Fi - Connected via Ethernet port on TC
PingDownload Upload
4ms 47.6Mbps19Mbps

Note: I use and recommend CAT6 Ethernet cables, CAT5e can be used
by CAT6 are faster for Broadband

Also what Neil mentioned and I Quote from Neil's reply:
/Begin Quote
Your results sort of confirm what worries me about the NBN - the
network/technology gives better speeds but, because of the high
wholesale costs, the service providers don't buy enough bandwidth
to give good user speeds when congested.

/End Quote

Yes Neil, the smaller ISPs don't have enough 'Backhaul' to handle
congestion times - a lack of virtual capacity on the network that
slows some connections to a crawl.

Ronni

Re: Correct spelling automatically - not working after today's upgrade to 10.12.2

2016-12-21 Thread Peter Faulks
When writing a book I use Auto Correct in Microsft Word to
automatically correct or change long words, I use numbers to
associate the changes for instance if I wanted to use Western
Australia this would be typed as wa1 which had been set up in
AutoCorrect as Replace wa1 with Western Australia.

The document was saved and as more typing commenced the codes dropped
into place, but you could also save this as a template.

After a few lines you remember the codes and if you wish can quickly
list any you use i.e. a1 replaced as Australia.

Anyway that's how I did it, and my 300 page book came out OK. and
saved me lots of extra typing. I usually got all my students to set
up auto correct codes as a single lesson.

Hope this helps.

I have thousands of shortcuts on my system for words. "au" for
example for Australia.

I've made them over the years by going to system
preferences/keyboard/text and added them there.

After the upgrade today, none of them work.

They are all still there in the list, and the box for the spelling
to be corrected automatically is ticked.

Any assistance would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Graham Rabe

Christmas "Make me an Offer" Clearance - Week 1

2016-12-09 Thread Peter Faulks

Hello Daniel

We have our two iMacs would this RAM be suitable, how much, can you install?

2GB 1333Mhz DDR3 SODIMM for iMac / MacBook Pro -
perfect for some of the later iMac's that have 4
RAM slots. If you've only got 4GB in it,Šit can
be taken to 8GB for very very cheap!

Hi All

Clearing out a few things,Šso thought I'd try the following.
There is a list here (with part numbers if
available) of things for sale. If you are
interested in something please feel free to make
an offer.
You may not get a reply back straight away, but
it will be in place for a week, then if a good
offer, it will be sold. (if it's too low, I
might come back with a counter offer). But
basically I want to clear a lot of it before
closing up for Christmas. Then I'll change it
next weekend.

Please email OFFLIST (by either hitting reply,
and changing the "TO" address to me, or hit
Forward and type in my email address. This way,
it doesn't fill up wamug with emails for people
not interested.

So I'm open to all reasonable (and perhaps cheap) offers. So fire away!

Re: iPhone SIM for Europe?

2016-06-19 Thread Peter Faulks

The Post Australia card did not work for us,

So we purchased sim cards in USA (EASY) and then in Europe, Italy
purchased a WIND Wi-Fi device ($30.00) and also a world sim CARD
that proved cumbersome to use (you dialed a number then it stated no
call allowed, then the phone rings you back and you accept the
connection with costs, very slow process). Had 5gb Data so worked
well with the wif-fi device. Unfortunately the WIND wi-fi and the 3
wi-fi in England were locked so of no use to us now.

Actually I purchased a BLU mobile phone in Las Vegas ($89.00) with 30
day sim card ($15) and this worked a treat as a hotspot for my lap
top and as a phone in America. This phone had twin sim cards and an
SD slot so now I use it as a mobile entertainment system with 10+
movies and lots of music stored on the SD card, it was only 5.5
Mpixel camera though.

Faulksy.

I know very little about this topic, but one thing I seem to
remember is that Australia Post were selling a universal
overseas-calling SIM based on an internationally-oriented telecomm
in Estonia (apparently a leader in this field).

Has anyone any experience with this, or was it one of my delusional
experiences?

My experience was simple.

At Rome (FCO) there was a small phone company stand just beyond border check.

Easy SIM card swap and worked all the way to Nice. In France, it
might be the same at CDG by if not, just find an Orange dealer and
easy again. You choose how many Euros you want. Exchange rate on

Re: RAM for old Mac

2016-02-03 Thread Peter Faulks

Hi Kevin

I have some ram sticks I will dig them out and send them to you, let
me know where to send them

PS I also have quite a bit of older mac stuff in a big bag in the
shed that you are welcome to have.

Hi,

I am hoping that someone can help me with some vintage RAM for a
Powerbook G4 I have set up for a welfare recipient. It is SDRAM
PC133U-333.

I have a couple of bags of vintage RAM, but no SD laptop RAM.
The laptop already has 2 X 256 sticks and I am hoping to find a
couple of 512s,

TIA

Re: Photo album

2015-09-22 Thread Peter Faulks
If you want to create your own album and have a decent printer
Cheese 123 is a very nice application to use, you can create various
albums and colour pages and then print out your work. You can even
get the books professionally printed

http://www.dealsextra.com.au/business/123-Cheese-Pty-Ltd.php

Peter Faulks

Hi - I have a vague memory that there used to be a way to have your
photos made up into a nice-looking album. I never did that before,
but now I have a need. My sister just lost all her family photos in
the Valley Fire in California. So I will go through my photos and
copy out the ones that are relevant to her.

I had a quick look at Apple's website but didn't see anything about
albums. Will welcome info about this.

Thanks,
Pat

Re: Downloaded pdf will not print

2015-08-19 Thread Peter Faulks

Hello Peter,
Another option which I use regularly is to click the Print
menu, when the image appears select 'Save As PDF' rather than print,
save the new image and then print from there.

Regards

Thanks tried print as image did not work, and John's suggestion to
save as pdf but I get this message when trying to save as pdf

Saving a PDF when printing is not supported, instead, choose File Save.

I have taken a screen shot and printed this, maybe that is what I
will have to do!

The plot thickens...

Colour Laser Printer

2015-02-19 Thread Peter Faulks
I have been getting quotes to print a soccer coaching manual that I
have written, and I realy only want to print one or two copies, but
feel I might be better to purchase a good colour laser printer and
print the book myself. It is about 300 pages with colour graphics
and will print A4 backed.

Can anyone suggest a reliable quality colour laser printer? Price
somewhere about $2,000.00

Many thanks

Re: Recommended video converter apps - mov to mp4

2014-12-04 Thread Peter Faulks

I have used

Aimersoft Video Converter Ultimate which will convert most video files
don't remember it being very expensive but it certainly does the
trick - There was a free demo to try

but this was worth the cost and should convert 90% of your video files.

I've used Handbrake to convert avi. file to mp4 format and then used
Quicktime to trim mp4 video clip but now I need to upload that mov.
file to You Tube and need a conversion program (I think).

Any recommendations for easy to use, safe and reasonably priced (or
preferably free) software?

I'll be using the software on iMac and MB air - all with latest Yosemite.

Thanks,

Graham

Thanks for your reply, the book is also in pdf but I provide folders

change and ammend and then save, these are all linked through the
web page.

Tried Autorun.inf but that does not seem to work these days

Thanks anyway.

I was going to print the book but it is 300 pages long and my

I am not sure what you mean by in word and excel in a web page,
but no one else has answered so I wonder if you have considered
saving your book as a PDF. This would make it generally available on
Macs and PCs.

Alternatively, just provide instructions to open the initial file in
a web browser. It used to be possible to get this to happen
automatically on a PC when the Cd was inserted, with an AUTORUN.INF
file (plus a couple of other small files) but I do not know whether
this still works with more recent versions of Windows. I do not
think that this was ever possible on a Mac, because Apple took the
security implications more seriously.

Mavericks is it worth upgrading?

2014-04-10 Thread Peter Faulks
I see lots of questions about Mavericks, I now keep getting update
requests to go to Mavericks.

My wife and I are both retired and we each have an iMac 9 with
2.66GHZ Intel Core processors running Snow Leopard 10.6.8. With 2Gb
Hard Drive. (Plus we have a Mac Book Pro Lap Top, iPad and iPhones)

We use Microsoft Office 2004, Adobe CS3 and Eudora but I don't want
to have to go out and purchase new software! Plus we have some
recreational games that keep us amused so if we upgrade to Mavericks,
how much will this change what we currently use and is it worth
upgrading?

PS we haven't upgraded to Lion because we heard that most of our
software will not run on Lion? and being oldies we are wary of
change...

Any suggestions

Many thanks

Re: Travelling to south of France

2014-04-03 Thread Peter Faulks

Hello Jon,

We found the best option is to purchase a wifi
device in France with a monthly pay as you go sim
card, this will give you complete control over
your wifi needs and it will seamlessly connect to
you ipad or iphone.

We travelled through Europe last year UK, France,
Italy, Spain and for the cost (about $40-$50) we
had wifi everywhere for about 8 weeks. I
purchases a Huawei MiFi (E5331) - £29 in UK (2gb)
then got it unlocked for use everywhere and it
worked great with ipad (maps) and our iphone. In
France Orange, 3G etc all have shops selling
wifi devices.

We did purchase a Lebara international Sim card
but hotspotting this to the ipad we estimated
costs would be high for wifi so we just used
Huawei and Lebara for making phone calls, we
simply phoned all our relatives and friend and
then they had our new international number. Our
friends purchased a cheap phone whilst overseas
and that worked OK but only in the country of
purchase.

Hope this helps

Have a great holliday

Hi everyone. I'm sure this has been discussed
before, but as technology changes so quickly I
wonder if is any easier now.

I am going to south of France for a month from
next Monday, and wish to use my iPhone, iPad and
MacBook Pro.
I'll be staying pretty much in one place that
has no WiFi, so am just wondering what the best
thing to do is:
Do I buy a sim card over there? or sign up with
the local telecom for a service over there?
Or does Telstra offer any help with this? I'll
probably have to use my HotSpot on my phone for
WiFi access?

Any help from anyone who has recently done a
similar thing would be gratefully received.

Kind regards
Jon

Re: Problem with Airport Express ?

2013-07-24 Thread Peter Faulks
Hello Stephen,

Have a spare Airport Extreme that you can try if you think it is the
device that has malfunctioned.

Usually though Orange light means poor connection - but anyway if you
wish to take mine and try it you are welcome.

Hi folks,

My step daughter has an Airport Express with her iMac (using Snow Leopard).
Today the Airport Express began displaying an orange light and WiFi stopped.

This happens sometimes with my Airport Extreme and I simply turn off
the power and back on a couple of minutes later.
It is fine after that.

However this is not the case with her Airport Express.
Switched off and back on a few times and still an orange light no WiFi.
I have ploughed through the configuration process but lost track of it.
Too much trial error is very time consuming !

I have transferred her internet connection back to Ethernet for now,
so she has a connection whilst I tackle the issue with the Airport
Express.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated please ?

PS: The Airport Express is only there for her kids iPods and PS3 so no hurry.

Regards,
Stephen Chape

Re: Traveling with Apple products (Europe) info

2013-05-15 Thread Peter Faulks
Using a Mac in Europe

Just a follow up to Peter's traveling question, I
though this might broaden the scope of answers.

We are currently traveling around Europe with a
Mac Book Pro lap top, iPad 4 and iPhone 4. I
purchased an international power adapter and set
up a two pin plug to Aussie line socket top,
which I plug into an Aussie small 4 way power
board. I can then plug in all our Australian
plugs and keep items charged up and working. I
also purchased an iPad car adapter and universal
car adapter to use ipad and other devices in our
hire car.

England
In England we found hotels charged about .50p per
minute Internet and we were in England for four
weeks so I purchased a 3G Wi Fi Huawei E5331 for
£39 plus one months service (2gb download) £30
from Three UK, (this allows 10 connected devices)
however the device is locked to the UK and could
only be topped up at the Three store because you
need a UK address to purchase this device and a
passport to obtain a Sim Card.

Worse they will not accept Internet top up unless
you have a UK post code and UK Credit Card, so we
found this quite inconvenient having to find a 3
store to purchase a top up voucher. However the
device worked brilliantly with the iPad as a GPS
using Maps but once we left England we obviously
lost Internet connection.

Italy
We traveled to Italy where I purchased a Wind ZTE
MF63 Wi Fi for 69 Euro, (allows 5 connected
devices) our hotels were charging .65c US$ per
minute for very slow connections, (double rip
off, high cost and slow to gather emails etc.),
this included 5 Euro and two weeks service and
worked fine in Italy (12 days). Although the
salesman advised that this device was unblocked
it proved later not to be the case.

Spain
When we arrived in Spain, I purchased a Wi-Fi sim
from Vodaphone, (20Euro) but this would not
connect through either Huawei (UK) or ZTE MF63
(Italy) devices, so I purchased another Huawei
E5331 Wi Fi from Orange for 39Euro plus one
months service 2Gb for 40Euro. This works fine in
Spain but again will be blocked for other
countries.

For the Phone we purchased 3G sim cards in
England which only worked in England unless you
pay 28p per minute for Roaming, but we later
found a world sim card in Spain for 20 Euro that
works in 10 countries (Lebara movil World Card).
A better alternative would have been purchase a
cheap UK phone these work throughout Europe, and
can be puchased for abouth £30.

I did try to organize something in Perth before
leaving but no one seemed to know what was best,
our service provider thought roaming on our phone
over 7 weeks would be excessive.

Sorry for the ramble but I just though I would
pass this on to future travelers. If anyone has
better methodology I would be pleased to hear it
because we are still in Europe.

There are some places where free Wi-Fi is
available but we needed to carry on working
whilst traveling and to keep in touch with family
and for Internet searches for hotels and venues.
Plus the GPS for driving.

Wi Fi provider in Europe

2013-02-24 Thread Peter Faulks
My wife and I are travelling to Europe next month taking my Mac Book
Pro laptop and iPad 4 (3G) Wi-Fi Cellular which I wish to use with a
SIM card to set up hot spot on the ipad tethering to the Mac Book Pro
for email and internet whilst travelling.

Can anyone recommend a good network provider or SIM card that will
work in Europe (Italy, Spain England) or even throughout the world
that I should consider? We will be away for 8 12 weeks.

Re: Cassette transfer

2012-10-17 Thread Peter Faulks
I purchased a Digitech USB cassette Player/ Recorder ($70) which
plugged into the usb on my Mac and used Audacity to copy over 150
cassettes all worked a treat and I used Sound Forge to split tracks
where needed. The Digitech had a amp controller which made copying
much easier.

I recently gave away all the cassettes and now have a great
collection of music in iTunes.

I still have the Digitech if you want it - give me a call if you want
to pick it up. - No cost (I don't have any cassettes now).

Vertical lines on MacBook Pro

2012-08-18 Thread Peter Faulks
Mac Book Pro laptop
MacBookPro3.1,
Intel Core 2 Duo, 2.2GHz processor,
Serial No W872906VX91

Recently after a short time on the lap top, the screen changes to a
poor resolution with vertical light grey lines down the screen.

Even if I change the resolution the lines remain, sometimes if I
re-boot, the laptop comes back to normal.

Is this a sign of a failing lap top, if so any suggestions of a fix
or venue for repairs and service? I do not appear to have a hardware
test CD for this lap top.

Re: Slow Browser

2012-04-18 Thread Peter Faulks
You probably have done this but have you installed filters on all
phone lines and Foxtel?

Often a noisy line will corrupt your download speed.

If you are still having problems I have an Airport Express and
Airport Extreme that you are welcome to take away and try. I also
have a couple of routers but first I would check the filters.

A good tester is this one

http://www.ozspeedtest.com/

I use the ADSL, ADSL2+, Wireless, Satellite, Cable Test (3MB)

to test my speed, and I get better speed when I disconnect the
family room phone and Foxtel

Good Morning All,
I am carrying on from my earlier post, Slow URL Loading, with
many thanks from all who offered assistance and suggestions. To
date, nothing has worked satisfactorily, if anything, the problem
has got worse. Pretty well any link or site I try to activate takes
up to three minutes to load before anything happens. At times it
doesn't load at all. I have no problems with Mail, only with the
Web via Safari or Firefox.
If I power the modem down and then start it up again, all
works for a while but not long. Could the problem be in the modem
itself even though Mail is okay?
I am getting quite frustrated with this and haven't got a
clue where to turn next.

Re: Recovering deleted files

2012-04-16 Thread Peter Faulks
Alex you could try

Unblunder it is cheaper than Data Rescue but does recover trashed files

http://www.yazsoft.com/products/unblunder/

Hi Wamuggians

I would like your advice again with regards to recovering my iTunes
music, photos probably a few movies that I deleted.

Last August I bought an iMac to replace my previous (lampshade) iMac.
The new one is not running Lion. When I connected the old to the new
to transfer data etc, I obviously was not paying attention did not
select all that I wanted to transfer. I did think at the time that it
all went a bit fast but thought nothing of it. Thinking that I would
like to sell the old one or something, I went through deleted all my
personal files music etc.

I have not done any work/saving on the old iMac at all, so nothing
should be overwritten, I guess.

What is the best Undelete product for me to use to recover the above
mentioned files? I presume whatever method I use should not include
downloading the app to be used onto the old iMac, as that could
potentially overwrite some of the files I want to recover?

Cheers many thanks in advance from someone who should pay attention
to what they are doing,

Alex

Is there any program that can spilt the file and compress it then

copying them.

Is there anything suitable in Snow Leopard to transfer large files?

I don't now of it can take NTFS but it does not read mac hard drives

Hi Peter,

Is there a specific reason why you have formatted the External Hard
Drive in MS-DOS-32?

I don't know if SplitConcat will do the job for you. I did use it
in Snow Leopard at some time.

Fwd: I need a Printer answer

2012-02-15 Thread Peter Faulks
My Canon ip4300 printer has crashed with the flashing lights of doom!
meaning the print head is US, so I need to purchase a new printer
that can replace this - I need to print CD's so if anyone has a
suggestion of what is good for Macs preferably wireless I would
appreciate a reply.

Took printer into Can-Calc in Vic Park (443 Albany Highway) cost to
repair $340.00 (no way)

Report:- With cheap ink replacements, the inks dry out and
subsequently when you do not use the printer very often the ink that
has dried out gets sucked into the print head and causes this to
overheat and eventually burns out the print head. Mine has actually
caused the mother board to become damaged and this now also needs
replacing. (Apparently original ink cartridges do not dry out)

It was cheaper to purchase a new printer = So I worked out the
following costs-

Cost of Inkjet Printer (Canon IP4950 from Canon Calc $129) -
probably cheaper if I shop around.
Cost of colour laser Printer (Brother HL3040CN from Harvey Norman
special $148)

Printing 100 pages per week cost per cartridge
Inkjet 5200 pages per year at 225 pages per cartridge means I need
23.1 cartridges per year at say $30 per cartridge at total cost per
cartridge of $693.33 per year per cartridge.

Printing 100 pages per week cost per cartridge
Laser 5200 pages per year at 900 pages per cartridge means I need
5.78 cartridges per year at say $99 per cartridge at a total cost
per cartridge of $572.00 per year per cartridge.

Of course some laser printers can cost much more but shopping around
the Brother colour laser seems a good buy, although it was not
wireless (Wireless Brother HL3075CW was $386.00)

Finally if I need four (4) cartridges and I am requiring 23.1 per
year or almost one per month at $30 then I am paying $120 per month
for 4 cartridges alone! It seems to me I might just purchase 12 new
Canon IP4950 printers at $129 each (possibly cheaper by the dozen!)
and throw away each printer when it runs out of ink!

Of course my calculations are fairly basic but it seems the cheap
ink-jets can actually be expensive options.

My brain hurts

Transfer large files between hard drives

2011-05-22 Thread Peter Faulks
I have several large files (BluRay Movies) that I wish to transfer to
hard drives

I have Blu Ray movies each between 10gb and 20gb in size on my Mac OS
Journaled 750gb G5 Hard Drive which is filling up fast.

My TV has USB input but requires either Fat32 or NT File System hard
drives and I want to watch the movies on the 3D Samsung TV without
connecting the computer to it.

Is there any way of copying files larger than 2gb to a Fat32 drive?
or to an NTFS drive?

Is there some software available or work around that can do this?

I get the message
Sorry the operation could not be completed because an
unexpected error occurred (error code 1309)

Re: G4 Lost Ethernet Connection

2010-04-05 Thread Peter Faulks

Hi Neil,
Thanks for all your help, will sort it out.
Peter

Hi Peter,

Still not clear on a couple of things:

on 5/4/10 1:39 PM, Peter Faulks at peterfau...@westnet.com.au wrote:

 Hi Neil,

 Thanks for your reply,

I have an Airport Express with a red Lead to the Westnet unit (we
connect via a satelite dish on the roof because we cannot get ADSL 2
locally) This Router unit then connects three computers using blue
 Ethernet cables.

OK, so you have a Westnet satellite unit which incorporates a 4-port
ethernet router. Three computers are connected to the router by ethernet
(G4, G5 Acer). The router is also connected, via the 4th ethernet port to
the Airport Express.

I presume you then have the Airport Express set up in Create a wireless
network mode and with the Internet Connection (on the Airport Express) set
up as:

Connect Using: Ethernet
Configure IPv4: Using DHCP

 1. A G5 Main Computer which does not have airport,
 2. A G4 (Wife machine) which also does not have airport and an
 3. An Acer PC that connects via Ethernet, these all share the
printer via USB from the Airport Express.

If I understand you correctly, you are saying the printer is plugged into
the USB post on the Airport Express and that the computers then print to the
shared printer over the ethernet network.

If so, and you have fried the ethernet port on the G4, then presumably you
can no longer print from the G4 to the printer hanging off the Airport
Express. If you can still print from the G4 (which you say has no wireless
card and is only connected via ethernet) then your ethernet port must be
working and the problem must lie elsewhere.

I also have a Lap Top that is wireless. - all worked fine before the storm.

So can your Lap Top still connect wirelessly to the internet via the Airport
Express. If so, you know that you still have a working internet connection
available via the wireless network.

The lights on the Airport Express light up for the G5 and the PC but
not for the G4 so I think I have a faulty G4 Ethernet port. I swapped
leads over without success and tried another lead.

I presume that here you mean the lights on the Westnet router unit. The
Airport Express only has one light - which should be glowing green if
everything is working OK.

I think I need to obtain or purchase an Ethernet card for a G4 and
slot this into the motherboard, so my question was where do I get a
 Mac Ethernet Card from?

You need to give a bit more info on your computer - what kind of G4 Mac are
we talking about here. If you already have a working wireless network with
your Internet connection available on it, I would have thought that would be
simpler cheaper than trying to repair the blown ethernet port or (in a
tower) install an additional ethernet card.

I did install a Dynalink wirless USB device which when linked Peer to
peer shows a low wireless signal but I can't connect to the Internet
 on the G4 nor Email.

Not really clear what you did here. Are you saying that you could see YOUR
wireless network but could not connect to it. Or did you successfully
connect to the network but were unable to connect to the Internet (your
email will not work until you have a successful internet connection).

Cheers

Your description is not very clear as to how your network is set-up.

 You say:

We connect to an Apple Airport Express which connect to a G5 and
Windows PC via Ethernet, they all work fine, just the G4 that's not
  working.

So are you saying the internet connection is distributed via both the
ethernet network (for some machines) and wirelessly via the Airport Express
 (for other machines).

If so, do all the other working machines confirm that both the ethernet and
wireless network are working correctly (ie you can make an internet

connection to both networks via one or other working machines.

If so, and your only problem is that the G4 was connected via ethernet and
is not now working - leading you to suspect the ethernet port is faulty (in
which case the G4 will not be able to see the network or other machines on
it and vice-versa) - then have you tried connecting the G4
wirelessly to the

airport Express and connecting to the net that way.

A lot of ifs which can be cut-down by a better description of just how your

Re: G4 Lost Ethernet Connection

2010-04-04 Thread Peter Faulks

Hi Neil,

Thanks for your reply,

I have an Airport Express with a red Lead to the Westnet unit (we
connect via a satelite dish on the roof because we cannot get ADSL 2
locally) This Router unit then connects three computers using blue
Ethernet cables.

1. A G5 Main Computer which does not have airport,
2. A G4 (Wife machine) which also does not have airport and an
3.	An Acer PC that connects via Ethernet, these all share the
printer via USB from the Airport Express.

I also have a Lap Top that is wireless. - all worked fine before the storm.

The lights on the Airport Express light up for the G5 and the PC but
not for the G4 so I think I have a faulty G4 Ethernet port. I swapped
leads over without success and tried another lead.

I think I need to obtain or purchase an Ethernet card for a G4 and
slot this into the motherboard, so my question was where do I get a
Mac Ethernet Card from?

I did install a Dynalink wirless USB device which when linked Peer to
peer shows a low wireless signal but I can't connect to the Internet
on the G4 nor Email.

If so, and your only problem is that the G4 was connected via ethernet and
is not now working - leading you to suspect the ethernet port is faulty (in
which case the G4 will not be able to see the network or other machines on
it and vice-versa) - then have you tried connecting the G4 wirelessly to the
airport Express and connecting to the net that way.

A lot of ifs which can be cut-down by a better description of just how your
network is configured how your internet connection is distributed.

Cheers

SOUTH PERTH RETAIL STORE

2009-06-05 Thread Peter Faulks

Hi Everyone,

Just sitting reading all your emails and comments about this newly
opened store South of the River.
This is Irene writing, not Peter and I am an Administrator, not a
computer expert.
Peter runs PIP Multimedia Training and has done for over ten years
whilst working full-time first at Curtin then teaching now at Corpus
Christi College.

Unfortunately due to ill health and full-time teaching he is having
to put his client training in mothballs as unable to visit so many
clients who want help with Macintosh computer training programs and
also problems.
We have been desperately trying to find someone who we could
recommend his clients to and sincerely hope we can use Craig and his
team.

His clients are mainly south of the river and yes it is very hard to
find anyone this side, let alone north side, to have his clients call
for assistance. The cost factor is always a problem as some of these
people are in their 70's and even 80's but come on, they need a go
like everyone else. Give them credit for even using a computer at
their age.

Anyway I hope Craig and his team can see their way into helping some
of these people without charging an arm and a leg for their services.
The older people have just bought new equipment so obviously still
want to keep on computing with family overseas.

By the same token if any of you know someone who would take the time
to go and see some of these clients please let me have your details
and I will pass them on as requests for help come in. A lot of
requests are for basic things plus emails and internet connection so
not brain consuming.

Sorry to have taken up so much of your time on this.

Irene

Zip Disks

2004-08-11 Thread Peter Faulks
When I use a zip disk in my wife's Windows 2000 computer it
invariably does not work when I put it back into either my Mac Lap

I've tried zip disks that were formatted for Mac or Windows with
same effect. This also happens at work when I put a zip disk into the
school computers Win 98 zip drives and then back to Mac G3 Lap Top.

I get the error -20 and cannot even re-format the disk.

Are these disks now useless and is there something I should be doing
in the format of the zip?

Any help would be appreciated

do it books (some now out of date - of course).

I am moving to a full time position with the Education Department
starting January 1st 2004 so I will not be able to fulfill my private
training appointments.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all at WAMUG

Calendar for a network

2003-06-15 Thread Peter Faulks
We have a client using Now Up To date on a Mac but wants to put the
calendar of appointments (dentist) on a PC run server so that two
offices (West Perth) and (Booragoon) can share the calendar and
update appointments.

Now up to date may not run on a PC and will not allow simultaneous
connections even if it did.

Can anyone suggest a suitable appointments calendar that will work
from a PC Server to a Mac or PC and print out in nice colours?

If not do I need to contact Filemaker gurus to develop a cross
platform appointments calendar database?

Any suggestions will be welcome
