Mayberry or Mt. Airy is 143.12 miles from Reliegh, NC Mt. Airy Andy's home town is in the northern part of the state of NC. Go Hwy 52 north through Fancy Gap and you are in Cana, Va. Almost a stones throw away. I know cause I asked Hernest T. Bass. Mt. Pilot is the town that moved around a bit. Several actual towns in NC were mentioned on the show. Bannertown, just south of Mt. I have not heard about any new movie in the works with Andy Griffith or Mayberry. But if it was a fact and I had any input thelists of acters cast I would use North Carolina's own Kelly Pickler to play Charlene. Kelly has the voice to sing counrty blue grass and the accent that is real and authentic to play a NC southerner. Otis could be played by the guy on King of Queens. Tim Allan as Warren the Deputy. Tom Hanks as Mike Jones. David Browning as Barney Fife.Jim Carey as Floyd the barber. Jay Leno as Goober. Demi Moore as Helen Krump. George Clooney as Andy Taylor. Al from Tool Time as a moonshiner. Sheriff Taylor is the Sheriff if Mayberry and the Sheriff's is always in the County seat and the Court House and Jail is his office. Yes I agree that the Sheriff normally does not answer to the Mayor. They do not have a Police Dept because it is a small, small town, not a big city. Mt. Pilot was always referenced as being bigger than Mayberry but Andy said Mt. Pilot had its own Sheriff. In real life Mt Pilot is also in Surry County. Go figure. Thats Hollywood. It is a great show with good moral values, and commera ? they all got along real good.. The key is that the show is based on charactors Andy grew up with, the rest is purely Ficticious. It does not have to make good sense to be intertaining. AS YOU ALL KNOW MAYBERRY IS A FICTICIOUS TOWN. The real comunity of Mayberry is in Va. bout 30 minutes away. This is the town Andy used to describe his childhood growing up in Mt. Airy, NC. sORRY bout the capitals, but the county seat had to be Mayberry cause that is where the court house and Sheriff's Office is located. The only other mention was the state capitol of Raleigh. Remember Andy was the Justice of the Peace, so he was Sheriff and Judge, Magistrate. There was no mention that I know of bout the county Mayberry was in. Everybody knows that Mt. Gomer did not take any money for working on the business man's Lincoln Continental because Gomer considered it a privaledge to work on such a fine car which was unseen in a little town of Mayberry, NC. The man had a change of heart and said it was not running right just so Gomer would take it back to the shop and He could stay a little while longer to slow down and relax in Mayberry and soke up some of the local hospitality and small town way of life that ALL of us miss and want to go back to. You-all know that Gomer never let anything bother him. He would get over it just like that and move on to something else. I think we all could learn a leason from Gomer's good natured atitude. I thought that the City Hall or Mayor's Office was over the Court House. 2nd floor. In a small town it would not be uncommon to have city and county municipalities in the same bldg. Sheriff Taylor was the law in Mayberry and the entire county cause Mayberry was too small to have a city Police Dept. You know Mt Pilot had its own jail. Did they have their own Police Dept ? Myberry had the court house so it is the county seat. As everybody knows Pilot Mtn, NC is smaller than Mt Airy. About Roanoke Island, I think that is the Lost Colony. They have not been found yet. I guess cause Barney was not on the case. The first established sucessful colony was Jamestown. It is on the Va state tag. 400 th Anniversry, Jamestown 1607-2007. Yes NC has Roanoke Island now. Maybe Va thought they would loose it too. Soem people think the people moved inland to find food and shelter and could have intermarried with the indians. No sign of them was recovered. It remains a mystery. It was HOT that day, and the polyester uniform did not help matters. It was many years later that the policy was change that we could wear short sleeves in the summer months with no tie. Drive Ins
I have wondered why drive in movie theaters was never used in the show. It is a very Big part of Americana, the 50's and the south. The Brightleaf drive in is still in business in Mt Airy, NC. If you are planning on attending Mayberry Days in Mt Airy you can call the drive in there at 336.786.5494 and see what is playing at the time. Hay, Wouldn't it be great if they were playing TAGS. When I was growing up in Salisbury, NC had a drive in. Now the closest one is in Badin, NC near Uwharrie National Forest and Albemarle, NC. I hear drive ins are making a come back. Remember when you went to the drive in and you could not hear cause the sound was distorted and crakled and it was hard to see the screen cause the windows fogged up, and I can't even remember a single movie I went to go see.
