From: WBMUTBB on behalf of wbmutbb-requ...@wbmutbb.com Sent: Sunday, May 5, 2024 12:00 PM To: wbmutbb@wbmutbb.com Subject: WBMUTBB Digest, Vol 25, Issue 16 Andy tells Opie not to pull horsehairs out of the lapel on his suit jacket. What is that about? Thanks According to The Horsehair Jacket Canvas -Tailoring – A Hand Tailored Suit<https://ahandtailoredsuit.com/blogs/off-the-cuff/the-horsehair-jacket-canvas-tailoring> Horsehair, also known as horsehair canvas or hair canvas, is a woven interfacing that provides excellent sturdiness and has a coarse texture. Despite its name, it is not a thick material and can feel rough to the touch, making it unsuitable for wearing next to the skin. Horsehair is commonly used in fine tailoring, particularly for achieving a beautifully rolled lapel. In bespoke suits, horsehair is often used in the jacket to ensure that it maintains its shape. In the past, horsehair was used in crinoline petticoats to support oversized skirts. However, most of what is sold as "horsehair" today is actually synthetic and made from materials such as polyester or nylon. Historically, horsehair was made from the tail hair of horses, which is stiff and strong. Richard Sargent ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.wbmutbb.com/

And then some of us have known you, Allan, for decades through this group. I've been silent for a long time too. Your history note reminded me how long I've enjoyed reading the digest in its differing forms. I remember Bob, Prodigy & the formation of WBMUTBB. Odd, since I don't remember what I had for dinner last night. My digital records don't capture the exact date I joined this gathering but I did find this interesting post from 25 years ago. Allan commented on the posting in his usual perfect Mayberryish way. Thanks for all the smiles and warm memories for all these years, Allan! That's good because I got to stay home from work and watch TAGS. I'm sure Anj and Barn and everybody else in Mayberry took the day off too." New WBMUTBB Facebook Group
Hey WBMUTBB! I've been a stranger here in town for a long timereading all the comments but never joining in the conversationso some of you may not even know me. I'm Allan Newsome and here's a bit of a history. HISTORY REPORT Back in April of 1990, a fellow named Bob Bravetti was on the Prodigy computer network. He started what was called a "topic" on the Prodigy bulletin board system with a subject header of "The Andy Griffith Show". After a few replies and a little bit of chatter, the topic died off. In the early fall of 1990, Allan Newsome signed up for the Prodigy network and started a "topic" on the same bulletin board system Bob had originally started his topic. The "topic" was called "Andy Griffith Show." After that first message Allan was joined (over time) by more than 57 other fans of The Andy Griffith Show (TAGS), including Bob who was the very first person to reply to Allan's note, who enjoyed visiting online and talking about Mayberry. On the first anniversary of the posting of the "Andy Griffith Show" topic by Allan, those original 57 or so Mayberry fans decided to make the group of TAGS fans a "real" chapter of The Andy Griffith Show Rerun Watchers Club (TAGSRWC). People sent in their suggestions for a chapter name and "Who's Been Messin' Up the Bulletin Board?" (WBMUTBB) was born. A note requesting the chapter name was sent to TAGSRWC HQ on November 4, 1991 and official verification of our chapter's approval arrived by mail on November 29, 1991 in the form of our Chapter Charter from TAGSRWC Headquarters in Nashville 1991-1999 For another two and a half years things continued to grow. Friends were made online that sprouted into "real world" friendships. Members shared photos of one another by postal mail (we couldn't really do it online back then) which allowed faces to be associated with those that until then had only been names on a computer monitor. Times were wonderful. Allan left Prodigy in early 1993 and for about 6 months he was out of touch with all the Prodigy/online Mayberry friends. Then he saw in THE BULLET, The official newsletter of TAGSRWC at that time, a note from Kevin Johnson and Jack Fellenzer requesting that folks email them to talk about TAGS. Allan emailed them right away because he missed the fun and fellowship he had with fellow TAGS fans and the WBMUTBB Chapter folks. That note in THE BULLET resulted in the WBMUTBB Chapter being expanded from just being on Prodigy to being on the whole Internet. By August 1, 1994 (the oldest "New Member Update" still accessible) the new Internet version of WBMUTBB had 25 members. The "New Member Update" was emailed out manually on a regular basis to all members of WBMUTBB so everyone could stay in touch. Back in those days, there was no good way to create an automated email list so manually emailing every member was the only way to stay in contact. Kevin Johnson kept up with the member list for about 6 months then, beginning with the "New Member Update" of December 21, 1994, the responsibility was given over to Allan. We had 50 members on that update. By the end of 1998 we had 608 members which grew to 1,356 by December 31, 1999. 10TH ANNIVERSARY - NOVEMBER 2001 - PRESENT Chapter membership grew to a high of over 1,740 members in November 2001 (our 10th Anniversary year). Since 2001 we have fallen in number, but not in spirit. We have continued to have issues with people not getting the Digest in their Inbox and I've tried hard to fix that problem. It's never ending and I don't know if I can do any better than I currently do. To EXPAND our online chapter, I have created a Facebook group called, "WBMUTBB Chapter." It's a private group on Facebook and I'd like to invite you there if you'd like to come. I'm not closing down the email Digest but I wanted to provide a different way for you to stay in touch with one another and share more Mayberry fun. IF you're interested, go to: https://www.facebook.com/groups/wbmutbb and join. You'll have to agree to the "Rules" which are the same "rules" we've lived by here on the email WBMUTBB Digest for 31 years so hopefully nobody with have an issue with them. I hope to see you there. Hello all! Re: Joe's note below on the Howard boys: The interaction between Barney and little Leon always cracks me up. Don was such a great comedic actor. Have a great week! Using my Andy Griffith Show mousepad as I write this. Al Cramton Huntley, Illinois -- Message: 1 Date: Sun, 24 Oct 2021 23:37:53 -0400 From: Joe To: wbmutbb@wbmutbb.com Subject: The Howard brothers.. Message-ID: Content-Type: text/plain; charset="UTF-8" I've seen or heard at least 4 interviews with Ron and Clint over the past couple weeks, while they are out promoting their new book about growing up in Hollywood. Although the book sounds like it's well worth reading, and the stories the brothers told were funny and interesting, I was a little surprised and disappointed that TAGS was hardly mentioned in those interviews. I was hoping Ron especially would've been asked more about his relationship with Andy, and the presence of his father Rance on the set, giving Andy some tips and even acting in a couple episodes. Hopefully the book has more TAGS stories in it. (Clint did say he has no memory at all of playing Leon since he was only 2 or 3 years old at the time.) Mayberry Day WBMUTBB Auction
We had another successful auction thanks to so many of our chapter members and friends. This year's total was $3,587.50 plus another $871.00 from the Rummage Sale for a total of $4,458.50 in support of Mayberry Days. It is always nice when people discover Mayberry Days and get something special at the auction on their first time in town. They are easy to spot - "surprise, surprise, I can see it in your eyes" with a big smile on their face. Our chapter is very fortunate to have so many talented and generous members who support this service project for the Surry Arts Council. Many thanks to those who participated this year, particularly Eric Lowry and James Pierce as auctioneers. Jeff _______ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.wbmutbb.com/

Thelma Lou (Janet) It was good to read your rendition of Mayberry Days. This is only the second time in 22 years that we have missed. The first being in 2003 with the birth of my daughter. I knew alot of things were gonna be different. I hate that we missed it, although parts of me are glad that we did so we wouldn't be disappointed. But like you said, Mayberry Days isn't about the stars that come, it's about the fans. I think we plan to go visit either this year of early next year, and that will be nice, but really, I'm looking forward to a normal MD next year. Let's just keep our fingers crossed. The Rimshaw House was on the 40 acres back lot, right next to the Taylor Home. It was also the same house used for Mrs. Wylies home when Ernest T. Bass was courting Miss Romeena. WBMUTBB Live Auction
This year has been extra busy for me and I realized I didn't even send out a notice about the annual WBMUTBB Silent Auction during Mayberry Days. In order to be safer during the pandemic our chapter held a live auction at the Blackmon Amphitheatre. There is not much good to say about the current pandemic, but going from Silent Auction to Live Auction would go in that column. The live auction far exceeded my expectations and raised $2,907 in support of the Surry Arts Council for Mayberry Days. Eric Lowery took command of the gavel and did an outstanding job as the auctioneer and I am grateful for his willingness to help with less than 24 hrs notice. Thank you also to Allan & Jan Newsome, Cory & Scott Higgins, James Pierce, Rebecca Spears, Dick Villard, Greta Hinson, Terri Champney, and the Surry Arts Council for the donation of time, talents and items for the auction. A special thanks to Dewey Lamb for earning a well deserved rest this year and still helping the cause with an extra autographed jug he had from last year. Also, be sure to congratulate Eric as this year's winner of the Mayberry Friendship Award and Dewey Lamb as the recipient of this year's Jim Schwenke Award. Both well deserved for all they do to keep the Mayberry spirit alive. WBMUTBB Silent Auction
With the Digest laying low over the summer, I failed to send out a reminder about the WBMUTBB Silent Auction during Mayberry Days. This coming Saturday will be our 20th one! We'll be set up in front of the Playhouse (under some shade tents!) Most people are aware of what it is all about, so I won't go into the details beyond a brief reminder to email me directly if you want more info or have something to donate. Many thanks to everyone who has already done so. It is most helpful to know what is coming in advance so I can make a bid sheet before Saturday morning. Please let me know if you have a donation, can help me organize things beforehand, or can help during the auction on Saturday after the parade from 10a to Noon. At the least, stop by and see all the great things we have this year, especially Dewey Lamb's new plaques and framed items. Hey Folks Mayberry Days is FAST approaching and hopefully at least some of you will be attending. It has been a custom for about 25 years that all the members of WBMUTBB Chapter, The Taylors Front Porch, and other portions of the TAGSRWC online communities gather for a few minutes to meet one another in person and to have a group photo. When: ~5:15 Friday September 27, 2019 Where: Blackmon Amphitheatre (Just after the World Championship of TAGS Trivia) We'll gather to the right of the stage on the hill for 5 to 10 minutes to go around and introduce ourselves so we'll be able to put a face with the e-mail address/nickname that folks use here online. Back in the beginning, this was the only way we could "see" one another because the internet was so young. There was no Facebook, Instagram, or any other way to share photos and put faces to names. Once, we even all sent photos of ourselves by MAIL to a single person who compiled the photos, made color copies, and then mailed (using the post office) the photo copies to all who had mailed in photo. Whewtimes have changed. I look forward to seeing all of you who are able to be there and getting to put faces to names. So, come to the Trivia Championship and stick around for a few minutes to meet one another. --Allan _______ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.wbmutbb.com/

Mayberry Meet up Thank you Maryann for the kind words. And yes, lots of folks put in a lot of work to pull off the meet up. Am so looking forward to next year at the meet up. The "dress up" competition was so much fun. I am in the process of making items for the silent auction at MD2019. Come by after the parade and peruse the items that lots of talented people have donated. The revenue is funneled back to the SAC to help promote the Mayberry event(s) throughout the year. Well, Janet, you've certainly raised some excellent points and provided some very interesting information I didn't know. The story with Lucy and her friend is one I've never heard, and similar to that rumor mentioned in the article. I guess I don't have a real theory about Mr. Schwamp's identity - although the fact that this "extra" appeared in (I believe) 26 or 27 TAGS episodes, usually in a more prominent role than other extras without speaking parts, gives some credence to the theory that maybe the actor was friends with one or more of the writers, producers, directors, etc. who gave him a lot of opportunities. I also wonder if Ruth Burch, the casting director of TAGS until 1966, may have been the one who initially cast the actor who played Mr. Schwamp? Here is an interesting short clip from a movie/TV show featuring Moe Howard of 3 Stooges fame. Clearly seen in the background, seated at a table in the restaurant on the right, is our Mr. Schwamp. I'm not sure of the name or year of this clip, but "Mr. Schwamp" looks about the same age as he did in TAGS. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=82VSFdaenvw Joe Suszczynski Grand Island, NY > -- > *-* > Well, Joe, it makes for interesting reading, but I don't subscribe to the > author's theory. Please turn off the automatic quoting feature of your email tool so this does not occur in the future. Or, make sure you delete the "quoted" portion of the message. RE: WBMUTBB Digest, Vol 20, Issue 51
From: Ron Blankenship To: WBMUTBB Subject: TV Land Emmett, I watch TAGS nightly on MeTV, and they do some editing for commercials, but not that much; not like TV Land does. Most syndicated reruns of past TV shows are butchered by the networks/stations for the advertising dollar. They don't have the common sense to realize that rather than spending $20 on what they're hawking, I'd much rather spend my $20 on the uncut DVD, and get the whole season uncut. But, the cut-up episodes are good for a quick fix. I'm sure everyone else feels the same way. You're not caught up in it alone, buddy. Mrs. Rayburn -Mrs. Wiley (Ken > Anderson) Ken, I know exactly what you're saying. When I was in school, we had the principal, assistant principal, and coaches who doubled in their roles. As an example, our assistant principal was also the supervisor for the student bus drivers. Yep, in NC in the "olden days" when I lived in Greensboro, NC, the bus drivers were high school students earning some extra money. You know, the foldin' kind. At that time, NC was the only state to have only high school students as bus drivers, and we held the lowest accident rate in the country. Mr. Moran also taught a Civics class. Our principal, Mr. Madison, taught a Science class, I believe. Anyway, it's a retrospect of simpler times. Thanks for sharing. Sam, I have a couple of ideas. At one time, in about three or four episodes, the squad car had DC-269 as a license plate. Also, when I was living in NC, a friend had a squad car replica with AUNT BEE as the license plate. Just a couple of thoughts. You'll come up with something very Mayberryish, I'm sure. WBMUTBB Silent Auction
Thank you to all who helped out again with this year's WBMUTBB Silent Auction - donating items, helping on Saturday, and bidding. We raised $4,795.75 which is the second highest total in the 20 silent auctions we've had! All of the proceeds from our chapter's annual community service project go to the Surry Arts Council to support Mayberry Days. I'll second Maryann's special thank you to Dewey Lamb for once again bringing a car load (literally) of GREAT items for this year's auction. It is always fun to see the creative things he makes and how popular they are. Dewey - you're a prince. I real prince. I have to share a story I was told on Saturday night - two ladies were bidding on a box full of Dewey's items and the price was getting really high until one of them had to bow out. She was disappointed that she did not get the one thing in the box she wanted - the bottle of Colonel Harvey's Indian Elixor. At the hotel, she ran into the woman who she was frantically bidder against her later that morning and after talking about the auction, the women went back to her room, got the bottle and gave it to her as a gift. The Mayberry spirit is alive and well. Jeff ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.wbmutbb.com/
Mayberry Days WBMUTBB Silent Auction
We are but weeks away from Mayberry Days and the WBMUTBB chapter's annual Silent Auction. This will be our 19th auction and your generosity over the years has made this a success. We have some new friends who have created some outstanding items for this year, so please stop by on Saturday morning in front of the Playhouse right after the parade. For the new WBMUTBB members, the Silent Auction is our chapter's annual community service project to support Mayberry Days. For many years, talented and creative members of WBMUTBB have been generous with donations of Mayberry related things for the auction - handmade items, memorabilia, autographed items, and special one-of-a-kind things that you can't buy in the stores. All donations are tax deductible. There are three ways to help - donating an item, donating your time, and bidding on auction items. Bidding is from 10 a.m. to Noon. If you have something to donate, would like to help, have a question, or just want more information, please send me an email. Remember it is most helpful to let me know in advance of any item your plan to donate so I can have a bid sheet ready. It is always fun seeing the great stuff people donate and spending time with our Mayberry community that Saturday and hope you will drop by. The current but far from complete list of items, along with some photos is at http://www.surryarts.org/mayberrydays/fun/silentauction.html. RE: WBMUTBB Digest, Vol 19, Issue 86
-Original Message- . . . . . in Wisconsin it is no longer legal for a barber or stylist to give shaves using a straight razor or any kind of hand razor. The only exceptions are for barbers who have been cutting hair for many years and have been grandfathered in . . . . That is such a shame. I bet because that giving a straight razor cut is a dying/lost art. I've never had a straight razor shave. I understand that the closeness cannot be met. Now, I've had my neck cleaned and sideburns trimmed with a straight razor, but not a shave. Around the Nashville area, finding a true barber is like finding a nickel with the buffalo facing the wrong way. Oh there are plenty of "quick-cut" salons, but true barbers are scarce. Sometimes different is not better. Simple and easy - - - the way life's meant to be. Ron **Barn McLendon _______ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.wbmutbb.com/

I am doing much much better and almost back to normal, whatever that might be. We had 11 inches of snow last weekend so my squad car is still hidden away in the county expo center. However, we will be getting it home this weekend. I have just scheduled 3 Mayberry presentations at area senior living facilities. All will be in May. Yesterday I was asked to be part of a very large International Toy Train Expo here in Eau Claire. That will be a fun event. We are busy scheduling parades, car shows, and special events, so it won't be long and we will really be busy once again. I had a nice surprise yesterday. Editor of a publication called "Hidden Treasures" called and said they were going to have a story about me in their next publication. The magazine goes out to 22 communities in Western Wisconsin so it means a lot of free exposure. They send me a copy to approve and the writer said a lot of very nice things. It is indeed humbling. I continue to write a monthly article for the Eau Claire Review and May's story is about Opie and his medal. I spent six hours earlier this week back in my small home town. My wife and I spent the time with four of my close high school friends. We were given another tour of the Dorchester Library so I could see where the monies I donate are being used. So you see Margaret, things are going along great for me. It was a miserable month, but it makes me appreciate the days more when I am feeling better. Lots of luck to you and yours from me and mine. -- Ken Anderson The Mayberry Guru 2906 May Street Eau Claire, Wisconsin 54701 www.themayberryguru.com www.mayberryreflections.com -- Subject: Digest Footer ** ~ Visit our sponsor ~ Weaver's Department Store ~ http://www.WeaversDepartmentStore.com/ ** You must send your comments to the Digest from the address you used to join WBMUTBB or your message will not be posted. WBMUTBB Silent Auction 2017
Good news and a math error to report. I am pleased to announce that this year's total for the WBMUTBB Silent Auction was $3,935. I had an error in my new spreadsheet and double counted the cash, so the total reported at the TAGSRWC annual meeting was too high so my apologies for that. I will have to talk to Mr. Meldrim at the bank about using one of his machines next year! Many thanks to everyone who donated items, helped out and bid on Saturday. An extra thank you to Brian Rose for bringing the tent, to Scott Higgins for the help organizing on Friday night and of course, Dewey Lamb for another car load full of great items. The post-MD dust is still settling, but I'll get the donation forms and thank you letters out ASAP. Know that the money raised by our auction makes a significant difference to the Surry Arts Council and they are very appreciative of our support.
