Myself, previously:
A lot of older people in our town do that during the day to keep cool,
and
it's encouraged by both the malls and the local authorities. Getting
your brain to work when your body's not happy is difficult.

Andrew:
Oh oh. Implying that Jan is an older people?

Jan:
ouch!

Joseph:
Just ignore the young whippersnapper! Eh! What??!

Myself:
LOL! Okay, okay...apology offered if needed. I meant no such
interpretation. :-) Sorry, humor doesn't work well when I'm on the
digest...everybody beats me to the punchline. I was only suggesting a
solution to the heat that is well-tested here in Kansas (the other
Oz). It works for non-older people as well. [/me halts before
inserting other foot]

Jan admits:
Yeah, I'm sure he meant well. Besides, I do go to the mall for the air
conditioning sometimes.

Myself:
Of course I meant well. :-) LOL And I'm stopping here before I get
into any more trouble.

Thinking about it I am not sure any of our shopping centres (The Mall and
Pall Mall are streets in central London) have air conditioning. But some
must have! None of them near here, though some who toddle round the M25
taking photos can always drop into Bluewater and fnd out.

Today is 90+ here (32+ for centigraders, or is that celcius - and why?) and
it is hot. Big UK problem is that it is usually humid too; great energy
sapper.

Drew,

Truth be told, DW:MX sticks it in there automatically when you tell it to make xhtml

believe were I writing my own dtd's and creating custom tags in xml, that would be
necessary to start the xml parsing service (wow, that's a big assumption on my part,

will always come to the top hiding the sub menu beneath it. So I thought I'd

looks crap, etc... Any suggestions regarding how I can better show/place the

Why use an iframe? This look and functionality can be easily duplicated in CSS and
will degrade gracefully for browsers that do not support it as well as the fact that
it wouldn't have the drawback you mention. Let me know if you could use a hand with
the CSS.

Okay Jac,
I've set up a super simple example at:
http://www.mechavox.com/sandbox/overflow.html
the key is using the style:
overflow:auto;
in conjuction with a fixed height and width on the containing div. If the content is
long enough to require scrolling, it will do so automatically, otherwise it will look
just like normal content. As far as integrating this with your site, you'd need to
either include the content in the div dynamically or place it inside the div
statically. It looks like it'd be easier to do it as an include, since you already
have the content on separate pages.

jesus Stephen that looks perfect. would I still have been able to have the
sub menu appear on top of it onMouseOver?
When I first started out a couple of years ago I thought layers were the
business until I viewed them cross browser! and at that early stage I was
too intimidated by my lack of know-how to try to learn how to use them
properly so I could use them reliably. Since then I've always veered away
from layers :o) until this site - it seemed this was the only option open to

[wdvltalk] Re: Check layer for me please

jesus Stephen that looks perfect. would I still have been able to
have the sub menu appear on top of it onMouseOver?

Yup, the sub menus should appear over top of them. Most browsers will render iframes,
form widgets, flash and java as always on top, regardless of the z-index of a dhtml
layer. My example was a simple styled div, which is just inline content with its
display tweaked, thus dhtml layers should play nice.

When I first started out a couple of years ago I thought layers were
the business until I viewed them cross browser! and at that early
stage I was too intimidated by my lack of know-how to try to learn
how to use them properly so I could use them reliably. Since then
I've always veered away from layers :o) until this site - it seemed
this was the only option open to me.

I started out in the same boat, but in 2000 fell victim to the WASP and Jeff Zeldman's
evangelization (As well as Mark Nuhouse, Eric Meyer, Tantek Celik and a host of other
visionaries). Every since then, I've been learning how CSS saves me time and makes my
life easier... Come in, the water's fine :)

2003-07-14 Thread Jan
Jac is much better at creating websites than I am, but I admit I have
learned so much since joining this group. Sometimes I feel overwhelmed
with learning and just can't get a handle on it, and if it's not
absolutely imperative that I do it a certain way that I can't
understand, I go a different route. I really thank the list for all
the advice and opinions. I seem to be on a learning slump right now,
and just can't get into studying, but it could be the heat too. Just
have to make myself get into asp and css more.

Okay Jac,
I've set up a super simple example at:
http://www.mechavox.com/sandbox/overflow.html
the key is using the style:
overflow:auto;
in conjuction with a fixed height and width on the containing div. If the
content is long enough to require scrolling, it will do so automatically,
otherwise it will look just like normal content. As far as integrating this
with your site, you'd need to either include the content in the div
dynamically or place it inside the div statically. It looks like it'd be
easier to do it as an include, since you already have the content on
separate pages.
hth,
Stephen

that happens to me sometimes - I feel allergic to it all - don't even want
to sit down at the computer, never mind work on a site. kinda burnt out. but
it doesn't last long - usually a night away from the comp gets me going
again.

and they all lived happily ever after :o)

I know, that's how I feel too. Usually I'm so eager to do work, but
lately just not interested, and don't know why for sure.

[wdvltalk] Re: Check layer for me please

2003-07-14 Thread Jan
Really don't know what's going on. I took this entire weekend off and
didn't do any work on the computer, but right now I don't have a
client, and it's perfect timing for me to get deeper into css and asp,
but just can't get started. It could be summer doldrums. I even took a
nap yesterday afternoon, and that's really unbelievable for me to do
that. It's extremely hot here, and that could be making me feel tired.
Whatever it is, I want it to go away.

I just can't get enough liquid in me lately, always thirsty. Even with
the air on, it's really hot out. Also, the air conditioner here in my
apt only throws out cool air for about 3 feet, so it's not really
cool. Last trip to the fridge to get some refrigerated cold water, it
was hot and I wanted to crawl into the fridge.

Yep, it's summer something.
