``
@menekam_rudy The "/wiki" section of https://fedoraproject.org is powered by
MediaWiki. The source document is not a `.html` file (which is why you can't
find one) but rather HTML generated by the wiki engine.

You can find the source in MediaWiki markup format by looking at
https://fedoraproject.org/w/index.php?title=Communicating_and_getting_help=edit.

However, that content should not be just auto-converted. It really needs an

Planning meeting for Websites & Apps Team reboot

2021-03-12 Thread Matthew Miller
We have a number of people interested in rebooting the Websites team, and
taking ownership of some of the webapps that help the Fedora community
function. (This started around working on Møte, the meeting-log site, but
has grown from there.)

At a meeting today, we decided that this team will officially be the
Websites and Apps Team, revitalizing the existing but mostly dormant
Websites Team and expanding the scope so it's clear that apps are included
rather than just static content.

We are exploring the idea of a Fedora Council Objective to support the
successful launch of this team. As a first step, we're going to have a
planning meeting to talk about goals and outcomes, and work back from there.
This will be a Jitsi video meeting (channel to be announced), and it'll be
from 14:00-15:30 UTC a week from now (Friday, March 19th).

All who are interested are invited. As "homework", I'd like to ask you to
bring ideas for a mission statement for the team and a vision for what a
12-18 month objective would accomplish. We'll start from there and work down
to specifics.

(Note also: if you'd like to be involved but are more interested in concrete
actions than high-level planning, that's cool too... you may be more
interested in future meetings!)

I personally see three goals for the initiative:

* First and simply, we need a more active websites team, and many of our
apps (møte, fedocal, badges, elections, ...) could _really_ use some love.

* Second, we often have new folks showing up in Fedora Design who want to
help with coding projects. We don't have a good place to point them.
Often, we end up saying "well, you could package stuff?", or point people
at the wall of 'easyfix' bugs with no real guidance. This team can be that
  landing spot.

* And third and at not least, we've got a lot of energy and enthusiasm from
some relatively new folks (hi, Akashdeep and Ramya!) who didn't let the
above stop them. I want to make sure they feel empowered to help with the
things they're interested in, and get the full support of the project in
  doing so.

Awesome -- thanks for your interest! Mo can help with the process of design
and updating the general look. I don't think it'd hurt to refresh the basic
things you are pointing out in the meantime, too.

Also, do note that the main "getfedora" website got ported to a new system,
while the spins and labs websites are still using the old one. Since we are
planning on an overall redesign, it's probably not worth too much effort in
porting them.

That's excellent too. We could always use more documentation. In fact, one
of the things we really need right now is a "getting started with Fedora
websites" -- how to make changes, test them locally, and get them from that
local test to live.

2018-05-09 Thread Matthew Miller

mattdm added a new comment to an issue you are following:
``
It is currently super-unclear what is going to happen with Atomic Host in the
future as a result of the CoreOS acquisition. Except for Fedora's involvement,
Project Atomic never got significant non-Red-Hat contribution, and Red Hat is
planning to "ultimately" ([see this press release from
today](https://www.redhat.com/en/about/press-releases/red-hat-unveils-roadmap-coreos-integration-red-hat-openshift))
have Red Hat CoreOS supersede Red Hat Atomic Host. What that means for Fedora
Atomic Host is mostly up to the Atomic WG to decide, and I guess we'll figure
out what we want to do as the Council from there.

But right now, it's all still up in the air. In any case, I think it's
incredibly likely that we'll end up with four editions, whatever they're called.

Yeah, cron, or, as some kind of CI/CD pipeline. It'd take the adoc, run
`asciidoctor -s` (the `-s` suppresses the built-in header and footer) and put
it in the middle of some custom header and footer for the mini-site.

@jibecfed Note that I'm _not_ suggesting getting rid of getfedora.org at all.
Just to stop redirecting fedoraproject.org's top level to it. (I feel like it's
really confusing when the top page of a site redirects to a whole different

[fedora-websites] Issue #756: Idea for consideration: Redirect front page of fedoraproject.org to new overview docs

2017-11-12 Thread Matthew Miller

mattdm added a new comment to an issue you are following:
``
@jibecfed That's definitely worth taking into consideration. I think we could
do multi-language more quickly for just this one page rather than waiting for a
full docs solution, especially if we go with @duffy's suggestion of
re-publishing the content in a different format for the front page.

Right now, we have asciibinder to translate the asciidoc file into html for the
docs site. But we could just run asciidoctor directly (as `asciidoctor -s` to
create "bare" HTML which could be inserted into whatever workflow works for the
websites team.

@bex , does that seem like a reasonable idea? We could simply add a
"translations" subdirectory to `council-docs/project/`, and then different
language subdirectories under there? Or we could even have a separate repo for
translated versions of this one document.

_Then_, when we get the full docs translation workflow up and going, we could
regularize this with that.

[fedora-websites] Issue #756: Idea for consideration: Redirect front page of fedoraproject.org to new overview docs

There's definitely room for improvement.

I'm not sure I understand. I'm suggesting redirecting to
https://docs.fedoraproject.org/fedora-project/project/fedora-overview.html. The
Council docs are findable on the left, but under a different section, starting
with https://docs.fedoraproject.org/fedora-project/council/charter.html

> Btw, can anyone tell me why the images on the docs pages have s long
> paths?

For whatever reason, asciibinder turns images into inline data. We'd have to
ask the asciibinder authors about that.

> @duffy no, it seems it is using :
>
> href="https://maxcdn.bootstrapcdn.com/bootstrap/3.3.5/css/bootstrap.min.css;>
> href="https://maxcdn.bootstrapcdn.com/bootstrap/3.3.5/css/bootstrap-theme.min.css;>

This comes from upstream asciibinder. I tried dropping in the Fedora bootstrap
fork, but it caused a lot of problems (images misaligned, the whole thing being
undifferentiated gray, etc.). @bex is talking to @ryanlerch about possibly
using Fedora's bootstrap instead of the upstream one, but there would need to
be some tweaks.

Right now, https://fedoraproject.org/ redirects to https://getfedora.org/. This

still expect that's what we'll do, but in the meantime, the audience for
getfedora.org — that is, people looking to get the Fedora OS right now — isn't
the same as for the project website overall.

What if we redirect, instead, to the new Fedora Project Overview documentation?
This is waiting to be pushed to prod (really soon now!), but can be seen in
staging at
https://docs.stg.fedoraproject.org/fedora-project/project/fedora-overview.html.

In summary:

**Redirect https://fedoraproject.org/ to

(Everything else would remain as-is for now, although I think we probably also

At the time, we had expected Fedora Hubs to provide that for fedoraproject.org,

Hi Vedran, and welcome and thank you!

Most translations in Fedora are managed through Zanata. I think in this
case that's
https://fedora.zanata.org/project/view/fedora-web?dswid=-3457
. You can get more information on the Translations list

Suggested rewrite:

Running Fedora Workstation

To run Fedora Workstation, you will need:

* Fedora Media Writer (download above)

* A USB Flash drive with at least 1.3 GB space available

* A laptop or desktop computer that has at least a 1GHz processor and
2GB of RAM. (8GB of RAM is recommended.)

Fedora Workstation is provided via Fedora Media Writer. Download this
program via the download link above and run it on your system,
following the prompts to generate a "live" version of Fedora
Workstation on a USB flash drive. You may then run this live version of
Fedora Workstation from that USB flash drive.

You can use this Live image to test and play with Fedora without making
changes to your hard disk. When you are ready, you can install Fedora
Workstation to your hard disk from within this Live environment. (You
will need at least 10GB of free space.)

If you need further help, see detailed installation instructions at

==

NB I bumped the minimum RAM for Workstation, and added a Recommended
section. On x86_64, 1GB is painful, and 2GB will barely cut it. Since I
know a lot of people use Chrome, I think 8GB is a good recommended
point, really.

https://pagure.io/fedora-websites — that also includes getting-started
documentation.

Remember that when you come to a project with a request like this, the
person who *made* the thing you are calling "not very great" is likely
to be still around — and maybe even the person who can help you get
involved. Even if you don't like something, or just if you think there
are possible improvements, it's never a good idea to come in with
insults.

I can. I currently removed them from the annoucement but can either a)
put them back or b) write a separate post the day after.

Okay, that's fair for Jam.

This seems backwards to me. As we get more complicated and develop
automation to assist with that complication, we need to get _more_
flexible, not less. I'd love for Spins to be able to ship when the SIG
for each one determines that their thing is ready - if someone wants to
fix up Jam, release it next month or whatever.

For that matter, it'd be nice to have the option for the main Editions
- if there's something that only affects Workstation or Server, don't
hold up the other (or the underlying release) for it.

From a PR point of view, the releases don't drive press like they used
to - I think we'd actually be better served by more, smaller
announcements. From a user adoption point of view, releases aren't the
driver either - data shows a download spike for new releases, but
overall the total Fedora users curve grows independently from that.
People come for whatever release is current and don't generally wait
for the splash of the next one.

Peter tells me there's a releng meeting in an hour or so... can we add
this to that agenda?

contingency plan for the failed-to-build spins/labs?

2016-06-20 Thread Matthew Miller
So, we have this bug* where some images are failing to be built, and it
happened that the SoaS spin and Design and Jam labs ended up not
succeeding in what became the official release. They aren't release
blocking, so this is fine "by the books", but it seems unfortunate to
miss them due to what's basically a tools bug rather than something
inherently wrong with them.

Obviously they missed the official cut and won't get synced out with
the rest, but I think the download numbers for these are niche enough
that it's probably okay to host them separately.

As I understand it, someone could just keep submitting the builds until
they happen to work, right? (And this might actually provide some
valuable debug info, because we can compare what works and what
doesn't.) Then, we could put those in /pub/alt or something and have
the spins/labs websites link to that. (These could be then signed with
the official key and etc.)

Or, Adam W suggested that we could instead link to nightlies, with a
footnote or something on the websites.

Huh. Since the list has no description, I always just assumed that it
was about coordinating shipping and things like that.
