[WikiEducator] Using UNV Online Volunteering

2009-12-07 Thread Phil Bartle
I think that Wayne is right to be concerned abut the UNV OV copyright
page. To my mind, however, it refers to only things that are put on
their site, and that would include our ads to recruit volunteers (They
are fussy about how we word them).

I tried to use their logo (a rather boring one however) on our
Community Empowerment site, as a link to their site. I got an email
from them saying I could not use it that way.

What is of issue to us, I would think, is that the volunteers would
run tutorials like our marvelous facilitators do, but for pupils. In
no way would UNV copyright have any say on how that is done or what
our content would be.

Apart from the logo and ad issues, we never got any static from them
in what volunteers recruited through them did for us. They also were
quick to answer questions and provide guidance.

We should also explore other sites, like idealist.org and Charity who
have recruiting services that organizations like WE can use. As I
recall, we have used a half dozen of those, but UNV OV has provided us
with the most volunteers.

Cheers,

Phil

[WikiEducator] Using UNV Online Volunteering

2009-12-06 Thread Phil Bartle
I think that it is a good idea, for training students how to use WikiEducator.

We have used UNV OV for several years, although our way of doing it is
different from how WikiEd will need to do it.

Important thing is that we have volunteer coordinators, who guide
volunteers through their assignments, encourage them when they show
signs of slipping away, and keeping track of who is doing what.

Cheers,
Phil

2009-11-29 Thread Phil Bartle
I was not looking for or expecting such a lively debate on this
discussion group when I posted my rant. I was trying to point out that
we will touch on controversial topics and asking if we need some sort
of a policy within our community. I was happy to see the debate here,
but I fear that I was taken aback at a few of the statements such as
You do not know what you are talking about. Above all else, I would
prefer that we all treat each other with respect and also respect that
we have differences and the right to express them.

[WikiEducator] Can Educators Learn?

2009-11-23 Thread Phil Bartle

John raised the question:
But I have a question. And this is addressed not just to you, but to
everyone. Why is it that educators -- the people whose job it is to teach
students about new technology and concepts -- do not want to learn the
technology themselves?
I am not taking a position on use, or ease of use, of technology, I am just
curious why this attitude exists. Thoughts?
Cheers,
John

The old saying went:
Them that can, do
Them that can't, teach
and them that can't teach, teach teachers

I have been an educator al my life.
In the widest sense of the word.
When I turned forty, my magical ability to learn languages disappeared
I have been steadily dropping in my learning abilities since I was three
In the eighties my fellow social scientists thought I was some sort of
a nerd (not a nice term then) because I was the only one of them with
an apple two clone and modem and able to use the university computer
from my home for grading, composing and so on.
Now I find it hard to keep up with all these educators using wikis and
other web .0 technology
So I am now in my mid sixties, retired and disabled.
Age might have something to do with it.
Perhaps I should put this together into another rant. . . . .
:-)

Phil

[WikiEducator] What is technology really providing the teacher?

2009-09-07 Thread Phil Bartle

As Ben said:

Although technology can be a place where information is stored, I
think it goes beyond that. At one level, a power law distribution is
at play in that a small number of people control the majority of
information (e.g., wikipedia). But more importantly, those of us
along the right tale also exhibit a level of control when we form
subgroups (i.e., social networking groups) and pursue common interests
through the virtual interaction with others.

I suggest that Wikipedia has a filter than hinders genuine idea
innovation and creativity. They are so concerned with ensuring that
wrong information is not presented, that they have set up controls
which also delete genuinely new perspectives, new theories, and new
approaches.

Cheers,

Phil

[WikiEducator] rant

2009-09-05 Thread Phil Bartle

Jan Visser said so many important things. One that I think is very
important is that we can use the education as cultivation metaphor
so long as we see the garden as the whole society, not a collection of
individuals one at a time. I should have made that clear in my rant.
Thanks, Jan.

Meanwhile in my next rant I have been exploring the elements of
altruism and charity which are important parts of the Community
Empowerment methodology. Do they have relevance for what we are doing?

Phil

[WikiEducator] Font Colours

May I add my support to Gita's call for meaningful use of colour for fonts.
Random and intrusive colours can be too noisy.

and border colour, which helps us with our navigating.

Dear WikiFriends
It is nice to see the Note template font colour changed from red to green.
Thanks.
It is really exciting to see everyone has taken to colouring
fonts meaningfully on their user pages. However, please do not colour
the fonts to blue or purple as these are automatic colours for linked pages.

Nellie, Microsoft introduced a Canadian spelling speller in its Word

Canada, as you might remember, learned British spelling.

We remember that in 1776 we declined the invitation of the Terrorists from
Virginia to rebel against the Motherland, and our insistence on using proper

[WikiEducator] Predefinição:ContentInfobox

2009-08-23 Thread Phil Bartle
Jesse, this is very helpful. It reminds me how rewarding it is to work in
this community. I shall now take up the challenge of learning to use
templates and work with my volunteer.
Cheers
Phil

All you need to do is take the content of
http://www.wikieducator.org/Template:ContentInfoBox and have your
volunteer translate it, then paste the translation into the page created
by the red link found in your article. Does that explanation make
sense? Don't worry about separating the actual template code from the
instructions, just have the entire contents of the template edit box
translated; you will need the instructions as well.

[WikiEducator] epistemology

2009-08-21 Thread Phil Bartle
Thanks, Peter.
I must admit I use the word rant with my tongue firmly in my cheek. What
I have on my user page is a series of web-logs about issues that mean a lot
to me, and in many ways are stimulated by the discussions on this listserv.
Unfortunately, several of the topics on the listserv pass over my head, and
I read them and hope some day I might understand them. Meanwhile i ave this
urge (Like the artist in Tahiti) to write from time to time of things I do
understand.
I do not work well with deadlines, so I do not declare that i will put them
up there on a specific timeline.
I see many parallels between what I have been doing with my community
empowerment web site, and WikiEd, and this is a good forum for me to explore
those parallels.
I like your phrase getting out of the way and see that as essential to the
kind of eduction we are promoting on WikiEd.

Nellie,I hope I can, and it takes a long time for ideas to brew in my head
before I start writing.
Cheers,
Phil

Great rant Phil... wouldn't call it a rant for you say many valid
things. I particularly like your section on getting out of the way or
as you wrote it community empowerment vs charity. I believe the
hardest part of what we do within OER is in creating and holding the
space that others can fill, help themselves, one could say. we need to
be coaches on the sidelines, maintaining the field and helping people
to become stronger...

Thanks for your thoughts.

[WikiEducator] Inconsistent URLs on WikiEd

2009-08-07 Thread Phil Bartle
While we are talking about policy development, may I make a suggestion abut
language codes on the Wikied URLs? English is en, no code or www. French is
fr, Russian is ru, German is de, Spanish is es, Portuguese is pt, and so on.
I have been developing some Romanian teaching resources, and using ro as
the code, but there I also found many English documents, Roma and Romani,
both the language of an ethic group in India and the people often called
Gypsies in Europe. Going to Wikipedia I found that they should be rmy, and
Romanian, as I had put it, ro. Similarly Bulgarian is bg not bu, but many
African documents are there. We might argue that this higildipigeldy
system is OK because there is lots of room on the site. We thought that,
too on CE (Community Empowerment) and did not pay too much attention to
language codes, until we grew to over thirty, and then trouble began
appearing. I wish now that we could start again with the Wiki codes. (but
then we only had three directories).

I am suggesting that we use the wiki language codes on WikiEducator, and
stick with them, so as be consistent both internally and with the other
wikis. This wil prevent many problems in the future.

[WikiEducator] Minor Problems

2009-07-18 Thread Phil Bartle
I wish to thank those who have been working to find the solutions to those
problems.

I am using an HP computer, with a Vista operating platform These problems
did not appear when I changed from my old computer, with an NT platform to
my current computer.

I am using Safari as my main browser, but have IE, Netscape and Firefox
installed so I can test out pages in my Community Empowerment site, because
they show some things a little differently. The new minor problems I
described appear with whatever browser Use.

I clean my cache daily.

I was using imagem on the Spanish and Portuguese pages, but the problem
appeared with them, and I was testing it with image to see if that worked,
for it worked with some other images (jpg not svg).

At the bottoms of the pages, I had the tables with links to my volunteers
(and to Gladys and Jibril) long before these two minor problems appeared.
Taking them out does not fix the problem.

You will notice that I have a Romanian volunteer who is eager to work on
this stuff, and there is no Romanian WikiEd per se. I made a URL with ro
instead of www, and it is now a pseudo WikiEd site.

I sent my password to Wayne with the idea that he could sign in as me and
see if he gets the same effect.

I am not especially stressed out with these two problems, but it would be
nice if they could be fixed. I think it is quite funny that I am a sort of
Guinea pig, a non computer specialist, because I can get problems that may
appear as more computer operators who are not computer mechanics, add
educational resources.

Cheers,

Phil

Hi Phil,

Not sure that I have a solution for your problem yet -- but this information
will get us closer to the solution :-)

First off, I took a look at all the pages in the different languages and the
flag images displayed fine on my machine. (I'm using Ubuntu GNU/Linux as my
operating system with Firefox as my browser)

So this might be a problem with the cross-browser compatibility, bugs with
copying and/or translating the Infobox_personal template in the different
language installations etc. To narrow our search:

  - What operating system do you use (Microsoft, Mackintosh or GNU/Linux)?
  - What is your default browser (IE, Firefox, Safari etc.)?

Have you tried clearing the cache of your browser -- press Ctrl Shift
and click on the refresh link on your browser to see if this fixes the
problem -- may not work, but will get us closer to the solution.

WE don't have too many users that are editing across multiple language
instalations - so we value your feedback and queries on the problems you're
experiencing working across our different language installs :-).

Cheers
Wayne

Phil,

I /can/ tell you that you need to close off the table you start for your
links to the other language user pages. I'm not sure why that would
have the effect you're describing, but it would definitely cause issues.

As far as the flag not showing up, on the Spanish page, you use
[[Image:...]] instead of [[Imagen:...]], and it's the same on the
Portuguese page. It works for me, but try changing it to the localised
namespace and see what happens? I'm also wondering if something is
causing issues with being able to view SVG files. It's a fairly new
standard, and however wonderful they are, I don't think IE supports it
very well. I don't keep up with that sort of thing, so I couldn't say
for sure. What browser are you using?

[WikiEducator] Minor Problems

2009-07-17 Thread Phil Bartle

Thanks, Wayne.

1. Flag images:

Here is my User page in English. In the info box is my country,
Canada, and no problem with the flag. It appears as they all did at
first.
See: http://www.wikieducator.org/User:Philbartle

Here is my Usuario page in Spanish. Formerly, the Canadian flag
appeared as in my English user page. now it is gone.
See: http://es.wikieducator.org/Usuario:Philbartle

Here is my Utilisateur page in French.  Formerly, the Canadian flag
appeared as in my English user page. now it is gone.
See: http://fr.wikieducator.org/Utilisateur:Philbartle

Here is my Usuário page in Portuguese.  Formerly, the Canadian flag
appeared as in my English user page. Now it is still there as before.
See: http://pt.wikieducator.org/Usuário:Philbartle

Similar problems appear with some of my translation volunteers.

2. Link back to my user pages

In each of the languages, when I am logged in, in the top LEFT corner
is my Name. No matter what page I was on, if I clicked on it, WikiEd
would take me back to my user page for that language.

My name is still there in the top left corner of every page I view,
but when I now click on it, WikiEd takes me to the WikiEd HOME page
for that language. That is not useful. there is already a link to the
home page among the utility links on the left margin. I would like to
easily return to my user page in each language.

When you look at my user pages, you might get a different effect.
Perhaps you could log in as me. I will happily send you my log in
password by regular email if you ask me to do that.

Cheers

[WikiEducator] Some minor problems

2009-07-16 Thread Phil Bartle
Have there been some changes in the formatting of WikiEd pages?

1. In some of my non English user pages, in the info box, I put flags in my
volunteers' pages, and they worked, Now they just show a question mark icon,
which, if you click it, goes to the flag image page.

2. In the top right corner of WikiEd pages is my name, When i clicked on
it, it would take me to my user page for each respective language. Now when
I click on it, it takes me to the main page for that language.

[WikiEducator] Category restructuring

2009-07-15 Thread Phil Bartle

The Categories function, even as it now is run, is a very useful
feature of WikiEd. I use it as much as I can, and add topic categories
to the pages I am developing. I would encourage a recommendation to
use categories as part of the tutorial (L4C) curriculum. Also a
categories page of categories would be useful. A document describing
the kinds of things suggested by NZ would be a very good addition.

[WikiEducator] Translating WikiEducator

2009-05-07 Thread Phil Bartle

It is heartening to see WikiEducator grow and add new languages.

The new languages need their base material translated in WikiEducator.

In our training site, we have translated the training material into
several dozen languages, and we have done with unpaid volunteer
labour,

We use about four on line services for recruiting those volunteers,
but the one we use the most is UNV OV (United Nations Volunteers
Online Volunteers).

Recruiting and servicing volunteer translators takes effort and time,
and needs a dedicated volunteer or staff member.

I recommend to WikiEducator that it consider this source of
translating. Perhaps the council could discuss it.

Cheers,

Phil

[WikiEducator] Portuguese WikiEd

A short while ago I put out a request for putting an infobox in
Portuguese on my Portuguese user page. I am happy to say that Gladys
came with her cavalry. She has been developing the Spanish WikiEd. She
thought it would be fun to do a bit of the Portuguese, too. Many
thanks, Gladys; you have been a lot of help to our little band of CE
(Community Empowerment) folk on WikiEd. If anybody else wants to set
up a Portuguese user page, or Spanish for that matter, please go to my
user page (there are links between the languages) copy, paste, and
adapt my info box to yours. Remember each language is a different
WikiEd URL so you will have to load your profile photo up again.

next on line tutorial, and will help newcomers, too.

Savithri,
Thank you for letting me know. I went into most of the userpages and added
my comments to the members' my talk pages.
I suggest you ask them to check. In addition, Gita and I will be giving two
workshops in May and June. The new members may wish to join and help the

[WikiEducator] a question of copyright

2009-04-06 Thread Phil Bartle

If I write an article and an academic journal publishes it, does the
journal own the copyright, so the only things I can do with it is to
cite it or quote it? Or, do I still own the copyright? If I own the
copyright do I have the right to upload it to WikiEducator and
therefore change the copyright to ca by se? Phil

 Hi Nellie,

Yeah -- the kudos belongs to the WIikiEducator community and folk like
yourselves who never sleep helping others on their path to becoming
active contributors to the OER movement. We shouldn't forget the amazing
admin and facilitation support we have among our family.

I've just remembered a very serious omission in my post about L4C
statistics -- and that is my thanks to Wiki Patricia who meticulously
keeps track of our all our statistics for the L4C project -- This is a
huge task given the global scale of this project and we wouldn't have
been able to achieve half of what we have without Patricia's tireless
administration behind the scenes -- not too mention her skills as online
 facilitator as well.

I know that she's blushing as I am posting this email because she
doesn't expect public recognition. Nonetheless,  every time I ask for
the status on our L4C project -- within minutes Patricia has emailed a
detailed spreadsheet to me of all the vital stats on the L4C project so
that I can make these impressive announcements on the list.

On behalf of the community --- BIG thanks Patricia.

 Cheers
 Wayne

[WikiEducator] French and Spanish

Empowerment Collective (CEC), and a volunteer Spanish translator, have
agreed to translate my English material on WikiEd. So I have set up a

translations from those two pages.

I can not get the infobox to work in those two cases.
Can someone help me please?

How would I go about adding new accounts?

[WikiEducator] Re: Iining up images

2009-03-21 Thread Phil Bartle

Works like a hot damn!

Many thanks, Kim.

This is a great example of how WE folk can help each other.

On my web site, I use tables for those kinds of things, but I did not
know how to use tables on WikEd.

I took out the second dimensions images, and put the three side by
side, reducing their size a bit to make them fit. I left the old
version on the site to show people for a while

2009/3/21 Kim kctuc...@gmail.com:
 Hi Phil,

 Does this work for you?

 {|
 |[[Image:PB-dim-mar.gif|60px]]||[[Image:PB-dimchang.gif|450px]] ||
 [[Image:PB-dimchang.gif|450px]]||[[Image:PB-dim-web.gif|60px]]
 |}

 Test:

 http://www.wikieducator.org/User:KTucker/My_Sandbox#Test_for_Phil

I put all the images into adjacent table cells.

[WikiEducator] Subject = Subject

2009-03-15 Thread Phil Bartle

In the list of participants for the L4C tutorial, there is field: title/position
Because we are educators, I propose that a word be added, Subject,
so it becomes position/title/subject.

See:
http://www.wikieducator.org/Learning4Content/Workshops/Online_schedule/eL4C21

It will certainly not apply to everybody, but as an educator, browsing
though the participants list, I am interested in some topics, taught
or studied, students and teachers.

[WikiEducator] Non Formal Education (NFE) Discussion

2009-02-16 Thread Phil Bartle

I would like to see an online discussion about non formal education
(NFE). After some discussions with some of the participants in the L4C
Tutorial I was in, I put together an outline and purpose page. I do
not know about the mechanics of such a conference, but I was impressed
by our tutors, Patricia and Nellie, during our online discussion
sessions of the course. Please take a look at what I have so far
drafted, and add your ideas and experience.

[WikiEducator] Editing Course TOC

2009-02-08 Thread Phil Bartle

Hi, everyone. Thanks for your kind words, yesterday. This is my first
posting so I hope it works

I am constructing a course on community empowerment (CE).

Some nice person, who did not identify herself or himself, added a
Table of Contents.
See:
http://www.wikieducator.org/Introduction_to_Community_Empowerment/Community_needs

The course has two parts. Part A looks at the process of Community
Empowerment from the perspective of the community. I called it: What
the Community Needs to Do.
It complements the second half. Part B describes what the mobilizer needs to do.

My unnamed benefactor titled the first part as Community Needs, and
that gives the wrong impression. It is not what the community needs;
it is what the community needs to do, or the CE process from the
community perspective.

How do I go about editing that?
