[Wikimedia-l] Partners survey results

2017-03-28 Thread Àlex Hinojo
Hi all,

Last December Amical Wikimedia, the thematic org promoting catalan culture
and language, ran a survey among our >100 partners. We got 30% of answers,
and we are very happy to share the results with you.

English version:
https://www.wikimedia.cat/2017/03/28/how-do-our-partners-see-us/
Catalan version:
https://www.wikimedia.cat/2017/03/20/com-ens-veuen-els-nostres-partners/

It is always very useful to discover how others see you, in order to
improve and learn

Regards,

Re: [Wikimedia-l] New project: stage on FakeNews and new Journalism

2017-03-20 Thread Àlex Hinojo
Hi Anna, thanks for your kind words.

As said in the one-pager, organisers don't fund flight:

"Faber offers free accommodation and half-board (breakfast and dinner) for
residents. There is also a fully-equipped kitchen at residents’ disposal in
case they would like to prepare their own
lunch. Faber does not cover any travel costs or obligatory health
insurance. There is no per diem."

Same here, there is an ongoing discussion about these topics, and as Amical
we want to be an active member, facilitating the debate. We consider this
collaboraiton project as an experiment, to innovate in ways to generate
awareness on our strategic mission (sum of all knowledge to all in their
own language).

Best!

[Wikimedia-l] New project: stage on FakeNews and new Journalism

2017-03-20 Thread Àlex Hinojo
Hi all,

I would like to introduce you a new project: In collaboration with FABER
humanities residency, Amical Wikimedia is co-organizing a* onsite* stage.
We do an opencall to journalists, data scientists, sociologists and
humanists to meet during some days in a quite village and make a state of
the question on the fake news and new journalism. We would like to invite
residents to work on new directions that journalism is taking. We want to
outline, to describe and to explain the changes that have happened in this
area, to investigate why it is valid, to call it into question and to see
how we are affected by new forms of transmission and reproduction of
information.

Further info in this onepager
https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B4Y7QEmAClNcRk0tWjJNZnhJMk0

Apply here
http://faberresidency.com/%e2%80%8b1-may-15-may-projects-related-to-new-journalism/

FYI: The related costs of the project are asumed by FABER and local govs,
Amical collaborates in the project conceptualization and developement, but
we don't support it financially. Actually, this is a spin-off project of a
residency done during January 2017.

I'm happy to giver further details of the project offlist if needed.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Our problem with India

2016-06-28 Thread Àlex Hinojo
I completely agree with Amir.

Wikipedia is an unachievable goal itself. And this is precisely what it takes
us to do It. we have shown the world that only starting things, they move
forward. Let's improve coverage, one edit at a time.

As a tip: keep in mind other people's interests while editing articles (
geographical, cultural, linguistical or event political) trying to discover and
understand the others while editing is one of the greatest prices Wikipedia can
give to us everyday. This could also bring some -needed- empathy to the
movement itself.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Why we changed

2016-02-22 Thread Àlex Hinojo
Hi,

First of all thank you Lila for making such a clear statement on how you
see the movement. I would like to go to the basics.

I do agree with your vision of what we did 15 years ago and could agree
about the changing environment and that we need to constantly rethink
ourselves in this hyper-innovation era. I also believe that we
have a huge opportunity to accelerate human understanding, but I'm not sure
if I agree with your proposal of solution.

You say let’s begin with technology and I would say let's begin with the
people.

Our mission <https://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Home>doesn't talk about
tech. Tech is the tool to reach a goal. The tool is very very important,
but not the most.

I've always seen the WMF staff, BoT and ED as the "*concierge*" of the
Wikimedia projects. They have the "house keys", but they don't own it. We
need WMF-staff, BoT and ED to keep everything working, safe and clean, and
make, finnaly to make "community inner life easier", and most of the times
it happens. But lasts weeks life in the wikiverse is becoming weird (just
the common areas, projects are still ok).

I ask some of the concierges to put some order again in the neighborhood,
please. I need a lot of time and tranquility to keep wikiprojects ongoing,
editing Wikipedia takes a lot of time. ;)

Best

  Dear colleagues,

  I need your help.

In a weeks time, I am invited by the Norwegian Science Council to meet
 them
and lecture and discuss about how they can nurture and contribute to the
  Wikipedia.

The Science Council (Forskningsrådet) organizes all the universities,
colleges, and institutes sector as regards research, through funding and
  program evalution.

The task is that they will first produce a do-it-your-self-kit to
scientists and researchers on how they can fulfill they obligation of
educating the public. Thereafter, they will work more targetedly with
pinpointing and contributing directly to the Wikipedia, probably Commons
  too.

Our good partners in the Arts Council Norway have already worked with us
for a long time on their public outreach obligation, and will take part
 in
the meeting and speak about how they have nurtured the outreach of
 cultural
  heritage through Wikipedia and Commons.

  QUESTION:

Where can I find good overviews of:

  - Examples of universities or institutions who have used Wikipedia to
  educate the public

  - Examples of professions or individual researchers who have done the
 same

  - Examples of formal co-operations between science and Wikimedia
 movement,
  as reference

  - Examples from your chapter of co-operation with science / universities

  Thank you all,

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Nobel Peace Prize announcement and editathon

2014-10-09 Thread Àlex Hinojo
I do agree. In Amical we regularly organize small one-week long online
writing contest regarding local Music Festivals, ComicCons or similar. We
get in touch with new organisations, reach to new communities and get quite
a lot of press atention with relatively small organizing effort and one
small prize.

2014-10-09 13:42 GMT+02:00 Liam Wyatt liamwy...@gmail.com:

This is an excellent event idea, congratulations to Wikimedia Norway for
 organising it.
It is also a brilliant example of how Chapters and other groups around the
world can take responsability for topics that have particular
local relevance to them, and take a leadership role in the worldwide
movement in the process. In this case (an announcement of global interest,
but made in a particular building in a particular city) it also highlights
wikimedia as not just a virtual community, but a physical one, and that the
 two work in tandem.

I've been doing wiki workshops for Amical during last couple of years and
since 6 months ago or so I ONLY train newbies with the visual editor. My
role on the workshop now is reduced to explain how extra features are done.

So kudos to the mobile team. And I know is not perfect. Is just wiki ;)

I also want to add, that I'm happy with the Visual Editor. It's not

feedback from new user during training on how Visual Editor works.

[Wikimedia-l] [MED] Most visited articles of a topic

2014-06-04 Thread Àlex Hinojo
Hi,

Amical is just drafting its very first collaboration with a Hospital, in
order to improve MED articles on ca.wiki

The doctors comittée asked us, in order to optimize efforts, if we knew
which are the most visited articles medicine related, so they can start
putting their efforts there

Do you know if there is a tool for that?

- tracking which are the most visited articles in a category tree on a wiki
(not only En.wiki).

I just tried to RTFM and JGI but didn't found what I was looking for.

a title prefix; can work for asteroids and proteins I guess :P )

Re: [Wikimedia-l] [Wikimedia Announcements] Italian Wiktionary reached 250, 000 entries

2014-04-23 Thread Àlex Hinojo
Congrats Nemo!!!

It is a great milestone for sister projects! Our Catalan version is still
at 51K but some day we will catch you :P

Best,

@kippelboy

Today, the Italian Wiktionary reached 250,000 entries with the entry
trasvolasse (translatable if it quickly flew over) thanks to Barbabot.
Till February, the project had only 127,000 entries of which only 5 %
 created automatically.

Credits to Barbaking, SemperBlotto and Wim_b.

  Dear Wikimedians,

On the recommendation of the Wikimania 2015 selection Jury Committee, we
have accepted the proposal from Mexico DF to host. The proposal will be
further vetted by the WMF staff in the coming month, after which time we
hope to confirm the award. Please join us in congratulating Wikimedia
  Mexico!

We would also like to thank the teams from Cape Town and Monastir as well
for all their effort in putting together excellent proposals for our
consideration. As a volunteer-led movement, it is hugely encouraging to
have so many who want to support Wikimania. The bidding process requires
 a
substantial time investment, and we are most grateful for every team’s
 hard

For those of you who are considering hosting in future years, we expect
 to
issue the Request for Proposals for 2016 by September this year.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] The Cool Projects

2014-02-25 Thread Àlex Hinojo
Hi Lodewijk,

thanks A LOT for all your hours and your time. I've never attended
personally but I waited every year to see/follow your presentation of the
Cool projects. It is a great tool for inspiration to the whole Wikimedia
movement to see the great things that are happening out there.

It's completely understandable that you give one step back, and that you
want to enjoy this year's edition in a comfortable seat. I think most of us
agree that you and your pals did a great great job. Thanks again!

Yours,

Kippelboy :-)

2014-02-25 22:08 GMT+01:00 Lodewijk lodew...@effeietsanders.org:

 Hi all,

In the past years I have organized (alone and together with Deror Lin or
Nicole Ebber) the Wikimania presentation 'The Coolest Projects' where I
tried to give an inspiring overview of some of the amazing things Wikimedia
affiliates are doing in our movement - sometimes against the stream. I have
enjoyed it a lot and learned a huge amount of stuff from the volunteers I
spoke with in preperation for this presentation.

I decided however that 2013 will have been my last presentation on this
topic. I no longer have the luxury or enthusiasm to spend the countless
hours on collecting, investigating, expanding, comprehending and presenting
these projects. While Nicole had to make the same decision, I found Deror
Lin (with whom I presented together in 2012) prepared to continue the
 project in 2014.

I think it is fair to say that the effort has become a project in itself.
I'm very glad Deror is taking the torch and I'm sure he can use all the
help he can get. Please don't tell him, but to give you an impression of
the work involved, we estimated that we easily spent hundreds of hours on
preparing this presentation last year. So if you want to help Deror, please
share your support. He will probably approach the affiliates in the coming
months to share their cool projects, and I hope that you don't make him
chase you too much :) Think about it already!

If you want to help out, or if you just want to show your support for the
presentation, please leave a note on

 https://wikimania2014.wikimedia.org/wiki/Submissions/The_coolest_projects_of_Wikimedia_Chapters_-_be_inspired
 .

Looking forward to an awesome presentation, but this time with me in the
 comfortable seats,

 Lodewijk Gelauff
