Re: [Wikimedia-SF] Meetup 15 -- August 7

2010-08-09 Thread Jon Davis
So the end all, be all, is that I screwed up in planning. This is the first
time we ever scheduled a meet that wasn't something small. No one (except
Cary) thought to define a specific point, and I didn't see the Facebook
notice myself until after the fact.

Now we know that in the future, any meetups in locations bigger than a
restaurant - should have a very specific location.

How about we get some GPS coordinates going too? We could have a Geocache'd
[1] wikimeet, or maybe a radio foxhunt [2]. If you can find the meetup, you
can participate!!!

My point was, which I was remiss to say, was that I was only taking
responsibility for the Facebook event page, and was expecting others to
update the wiki-page; which was a mistake on my part.

Hey Robert,
Sorry we missed you! It was a pretty productive meetup despite
mishaps; we talked about conference planning (notes to follow).
I wonder if you were on the other side of the park? I showed up around
2:40... I think the lesson for next time is to pick an exact location
and put it on the wiki page, especially when the location is vague
like the park.
I'm happy to share my cell # off-list.

Neither this email thread nor the page on Wikipedia [1] mention the

Robert, A group of us remained at 19th and Delores, under the bell,
until sometime past 2:30, when Phoebe arrived. Nobody thought to bring
any kind of sign, but Alex had a Wikipedia t-shirt. The Facebook page
mentioned 19th and Delores (which I put in myself, knowing that Delores
Park is a big park and often takes some time to find people). Brion
couldn't make it and Jon was unavoidably detained in Berkeley; but the
rest of us were all there.

We went to get ice cream at that time, because it seemed unlikely that
anyone else was coming; and we remained on the lookout for you, since
you were the only one left unaccounted-for. We then returned to the
park around 3ish, where Eugene met us and we sat there until well past
4:00.

I'm sorry you couldn't find us, and that nobody provided a common phone
number. Maybe we should make a point to exchange numbers. A number of
us were checking email regularly to see if anyone was still missing, but
maybe someone needs to be in charge of signs and signals. I think it's

Re: [Wikimedia-SF] Meetup 15 -- August 7

2010-08-08 Thread Robert Rohde
Okay guys, so what happened?

I came out to Dolores Park yesterday. My girlfriend and I got there
at 2:20, and then spent 30 minutes walking around without finding
anyone I knew or seeing any sign I could recognize. Given that I knew
most of the people who said they were coming, this is rather
frustrating.

Assuming that there really was a meetup yesterday, then I'd like to
say that we definitely need to do a better job of saying precisely
where people are meeting rather than have it just be somewhere vague
in a large park with lots of other people around. Similarly, I could
have called someone to figure out what was going on, but no one put
their contact info on the event page (which is all I had with me).

Brion mentioned Delores Park. I think that's a great idea, although
difficult for internet access (who needs their computers anyway!).
There are any number of restaurants nearby.

Hi all,

Thanks Jon for choosing a date :)

So... don't forget about the meetup next Saturday (Aug 7):
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/San_Francisco_15

We still need to set a location and time. Please make suggestions, along
with adding agenda items, to the meetup page above.

So far on the agenda:
* reports from Wikimania & WikiSym
* planning for West Coast WikiCon: I have some updates on possible venues;
we have a lot of other areas to go over as well. If you're working on a
venue, can you please try to bring information about it on Saturday or
update the wiki?

thanks!
Phoebe

Yes definitely! Let's have a meetup soon. Agenda items could include:
* reporting on wikisym/wikimania
* sharing updates on projects -- for instance if anyone wants to give
an update on wikimedia california etc
* planning the west coast wikiconference! (the january event)

What do people think of a meetup either next weekend or the weekend
after that? I think it'd be great to get in the habit of monthly
meetings on the 1st or 2nd saturday of the month (for instance).

let things fall by the wayside.

I know, however, that it was our intention to plan regular

Anyone want to move forward?

I have an evening company + families run to Hangar 1 / St George's
Distillery tomorrow night, so later is better on Saturday, but 1pm
should work for me.

[Wikimedia-SF] meetup 14: potential time change?

2010-04-29 Thread phoebe ayers
Hi all,
we're planning a meetup this Saturday, May 1st, in SF:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/San_Francisco_14

There hasn't been much interest yet. So:

* if you are interested please sign up!
* time change: how would you feel about a time change to be earlier --
perhaps 1 pm for a lunch get-together? I can't make it at the current
time of 3pm unfortunately (I need to be in Sacramento at 6).

If that doesn't work let me know.

Some people have expressed displeasure at having to put their names down
for security. If this really bugs you you can just put your Wikimedia
handle on the list. There shouldn't be any issue, but if someone asks
tell them you're here for the Wikimedia meet-up hosted by Micah Alpern.
You can also call me at any time 408.209.9509.

I'm planning to order several pizza's for those who come to help with
the Maker Fair planning, so their's some extra incentive. :-)

See you all Sunday,

about Maker Faire mostly, and I'm sure other things like what is going

What Jon said, please don't Tweet me to ask me a question. I think
it's fine using the office again, but definitely make sure to give us
2-3 months in between each time, because meeting here takes a
considerable amount of staff time, and is somewhat disruptive to every
day work.

I'd them who is incharge of the meetup should pick a date. I think weekend
of the 12-14 is probably not a good idea due to St Patrick's day. Otherwise
I'd say anything works (my vote is March 6th).

Don't tweet at Cary, he shuns the twitter. Identica is the answer.

[Wikimedia-SF] Meetup _12: March Making for Maker Faire

2010-02-15 Thread James Salsman
Micha & all,

Is half a month away too early to ask people to list their preferred
dates and/or times on:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/San_Francisco_12 ?

I tried to carry as much of the results forward from Meetup_11 as I
could. _13 is set for April 10th on Angel Island. The only non-active
part scheduled, is proofreading (or, finishing) stuff for Maker Faire
that didn't get finished online or at _12.

To that end, should we try to do as much as the preparation on line
beforehand as possible? There are ideas for everyone. Some of them
are linked to completed projects, some of them are completely new,
some of them are in between, and some of them I don't really
understand.

Also, I tried to tweet you and Cary -- are we allowed to use the
Office again? Many of us didn't get to see the big conference room
which was reserved for the Board meeting during _11. As far as I can
remember, everyone behaved in an exemplary manner, so I hope so.

Cheers,
James Salsman

that missing one wont be such a "big deal", but it is extremely helpful to
the meetup organizers to have some idea of what others things. Either that,
or we go back to the Shakata-tatorship model, which I'm cool with. I do
love having peons.

I would also like to state for the record that the wikimedia-sf list is not
Foundation-L. You are not limited to a specific number of posts a month,
and no one is going to smite you too badly for saying "me too!". I mainly
say this because we _NEED_ more people to respond, if not on list at least
on wiki.

Granted the goal for this year is to make these affairs more regular, so

OK, to accommodate a few folks who couldn't make it on the 30th, let's
have the meetup on:

* Saturday, February 6
* Wikimedia Foundation offices, 149 New Montgomery St., SF [assuming
someone from the office can attend]
* 3pm-ish; feel free to suggest alternate times

This also gives us an extra week to all come up with:
* Awesome ideas for Maker Faire
* Ideas for meetups and projects (fieldtrips, SF loves art, ??? --
think about what you'd be willing to help coordinate)
* More agenda items

PLEASE sign up on the wiki if you intend to come, so that a) we can
plan for snacks; b) someone can let you in the door.

If you all want to meet up then that's fine with me -- I can't attend during
a weekday, I'm afraid. But there's no law against having a meetup during the
week, or having multiple meetups!

If anyone else has any suggestions or preferences, please *post them on the
wiki* so that we can make an informed decision.

Hi Hank,

Sorry to hear you're having troubles on Wikipedia. Thankfully though,
real-life get-togethers don't have much to do with online editing; a
common interest in Wikimedia projects is all that is required. You are
of course welcome to come to the meetup if you feel like attending.

Re: [Wikimedia-SF] meetup!

2010-01-10 Thread Jon Davis
Just as a heads up. The weekend of February 13th is presidents day, so
probably not the best idea.

My personal vote is lets just meet at the tea thinger and do it in January.
Worse comes to worse, it is a smaller "planning" meeting for bigger and more
fun things later in the year. Maybe we can even get people to volunteer to
"take charge" of planning one future meeting each.

[Wikimedia-SF] meetup!

2010-01-09 Thread phoebe ayers
Dear all,

It's been too long! Let's have a meetup.

I added a list of possible dates here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/San_Francisco_11
Please indicate which works best for you (or proposed different dates)
and propose locations and agenda items.

Suggested agenda items so far:
* planning for Maker Faire (which I'm super excited about!)
* potential spring field trips
* recruiting more bay area editors to meetups

cheers,
Phoebe
