Please correct me if I am wrong, but it looks like Indian citizens will
have to personally appear for an interview at the Mexico Embassy in New
Delhi. For people far away from New Delhi, to and fro flight charges plus a
day's stay plus Visa fee can easily come around 25,000 INR.

Since 14th April is the last day for accepting scholarships from WMF,
please be aware of this additional expense and inform Wikimania Scholarship
committee if you need additional funding to meet this expense.

We can discuss and summarize more such details at

International Women's Day (March 8) and Women's History Month has been

The theme of the edit-a-thon this year on the English Wikipedia is Women

Hi Srikanth,

While my work on the pilot project is over, the BNHS is still taking a look
at it. The BNHS is yet to convey its decision about forming a partnership
with the Wikimedia community. I shall soon write at length about
transferable lessons and experiences from the pilot project and I hope to
be able to address the points Ashwin and Vickram have raised above.

As Ashwin points out, from the point of view of a partnership, this was

However, Rohini does not call it a partnership, because it isn't one.
This was a pilot, intended to demonstrate to persons of influence at BNHS
what a partnership could achieve for the Society. The partnership lies
 ahead.

Pradeep does not call it a partnership either, he squarely labels it a
pilot, and suggests to Wikimedians everywhere that they initiate similar
efforts with similar physical archives in other parts of India.

It would have been exceedingly unrealistic to imagine that the philosophy
of open knowledge be instantly understood and enthusiastically embraced.
None of us did at any stage of this pilot, which we well understand to be a
foot in the door. I was warned by other senior Wikimedians, recognised
naturalists in their own right, as well as naturalists who are not
Wikimedians, but know the Society well, that this would be an uphill task,
long before we even took the first steps. Dissing the organisation for its
traditional mindset is easy, but not fruitful.

For all I know, it may be easier to do this elsewhere, with other
organisations. And the very best to others who take up that challenge.
Everyone should do what they can, when they can, wherever they can.

This is a work in progress. And I wish Rohini the very best, every
encouragement, to continue her efforts to get that door opened wider now.

From a point of view of GLAM partnership this was emphatically NOT a
success. It was not a complete failure also, because brave Rohini persisted
in the face of an unresponsive BNHS. In the end BNHS and Wikipedia got a
better article on Humayun Abdulali and Rohini got some hard-won experience
 - that is all.

But the potential for this project could have been so much greater. The
experiences of Wikipedians-in-residence in the Smithsonian and the British
Museum (and other initiatives) was so wonderful, so engaging to both sides
and so fruitful that the lacklustre report in the link Pradeep mentions
feels like ashes in one's mouth.

BNHS has been for many years the iconic symbol of private wildlife
research. It has a very long history, had some truly wonderful people in it
including Salim Ali and Humayun Abdulali, has a very good library and a
very good collection of skins, shells, eggs etc. It has a peer-reviewed
scientific journal more than 100 years old which has high repute. It was
the place where eminent scientists like Johnsingh, Ravi Sankaran and Bharat
Bhushan, besides many others, began their careers or were encouraged.
Whether it is mammals, birds, reptiles, marine life or insects; anywhere in
India one can definitely say about BNHS - been there, done that!

So one would expect BNHS to be open to the idea of helping Indians to
learn more about wildlife, nature, environment and conservation? Wrong.

Check the site of BNHS for stuff which educates or informs or which
guides or helps and see the complete paucity of material. Its a nice enough
looking website tells you very much what the organisation, its goals and
programmes, but there is zilch information about India's wildlife, from
India's premier wildlife NGO. If you compare that with a comparable
organisation in the USA and UK say Audobon or RSPB, you will find they have
useful articles, knowledge material aside from what they are involved in.
Compare Audobon which gives Tips on how to get nature to the classroom or
taking schoolchildren outdoors, or RSPB which provides a complete bird list
 with short writeup.

BNHS does not have an altruistic outlook towards IP and the resources
they hold. The reason for that is not difficult to understand. BNHS
publishes a variety of handbooks, coffee-table books etc and their
employees derive additional income from their publication, sale of
photographs they take on BNHS funded

moderated 30 million articles in 286 languages. Answer is you and me and us!

Wikipedia, world’s largest and the most referenced work on Internet, has
been ranked at seventh position globally on Alexa as of June 2013. It has,
estimated, 365 million readers worldwide. Though numbers are impressive
enough to boggle one’s mind, what truly electrifies the spinal cord is the
way Wikipedia functions. Anyone from any corner of the world (Now, you can
ask if earth is round or square? Go to Wikipedia, you will get interlinked
references from Heliocentricism to Geocentrism, from Copernicus to Galileo,
from Copernican Revolution to Renaissance, and thus traverse the complete
circle of knowledge!) can write an article. Then some other volunteers keep
the wheel rolling by editing and validating the existing article and by
adding required citation, views and counterviews. This invisible
chain-reaction keeps flourishing Wikipedia just like an unnoticed food
chain of natural ecosystem.

On Saturday, 13th July 2013, workshop on Wikipedia was organized by
volunteers of Wikimedia Foundation, in association with SCM, Sophia
Polytechnic, Mumbai. The workshop was conducted by Bishakha Datta and
Rohini Lakshane from Wikimedia Foundation, Mumbai. After giving the brief
on history of Wikipedia, how Wikipedia functions and how one can become a
part of this knowledge thriving community, instructors and volunteers
facilitated SCM students to create articles on Wikipedia. SCM students
successfully created two articles on Dina Vakil, the first woman resident
editor of The Times of Indiahttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Times_of_India's
Bombay edition and Ritu Menon, the co-founder, writer and publisher of
India's first feminist publishing house, *Kali for
Women*http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kali_for_Women.
The workshop truly helped students to realize that how the power of
technology, information and collaborative effort can drive people towards
the informed and knowledge-intensive society.

After attending the workshop I couldn’t stop myself and posted the
following note dedicated to my all friends:

· Do you think 30 million articles in 286 languages is too loud a
figure? If you are sceptical, then that’s great. Go and investigate
further. Provide the correct figure (if the given figure is erroneous) and
yeah provide the reference/citation as well.

Bingo! That’s how the whole Wikipedia has been erected, by sharing and
contributing knowledge. Contribute about your locality, personalities,
culture, tradition, etc.

· Believe in good faith. Knowledge is a path not the signboard. Be
in good faith, put information, views and counter-views with reference, and
don’t be judgmental. Neutrality is the nature of Wikipedia.

· Acknowledge the effort. Not only when you write a research paper
or contribute to Wikipedia, but also when you receive help, love and care
of someone, do acknowledge. Democracy cannot exist without thankfulness and
compassion. Wikipedia is truly democratic way of knowledge transfer - for
the people, of the people, by the people.

- Parth Vyas (22nd July 2013, Mumbai)

respond to such a 'discussion'. Your efforts to prove what you are trying
to prove are outstanding. I won't be surprised if Doctor Hakim (I
appreciate the wordplay) is a troll or a sock puppet who has planted this
thread to get the discussion where it is.

Almost every community member I have interacted with or met in person over
the years has gone out of pocket for volunteer activities. I have known of
community members refusing grants while going out of pocket, and I respect
them all the more for that. Some of us have spent astounding amounts of
money this way. As I see it, the Chapter has committed to transparency and
accountability; nothing is wrong with it having some money of its own. When
you become a member of the Chapter again, maybe you can help bring about as
much transparency as you'd like.

project ( *विकिसूक्तिः*) is out of Incubator and is available as an open
source project like Wikipedia now. It was in a dormant stage with very
limited editing options and visibility since its inception.

We had started our efforts towards this in August 2012, persuading
Wikipedia Language Committee. Over 7000 system messages were translated to
samskrit, some 800 articles of useful content related to this project were
created and uploaded, which were some of the requirements to approve new
projects. Thanks to dedicated Wikipedians like Shiju Alex, that today we
have the project out of incubator, which means, this project would be
readily available for everyone to edit and use now on.

The project is a store house of Subhashitas extracted from different
scriptures like Veda, Upanishat Puraana, RamayaNa, Mahabharatam etc,
categorised based on the topics with explanations. Also, it contains the
idioms and phrases, witty puzzles, sayings of great people, Chitrakaavyam
etc, everything in Samskrit. It is to be noted that all these, in a single
webpage is not available anywhere else in such an easily available form. We
have about 1260 pages under various categories, for a ready review at *sa.

I request everyone to visit once for guidance, comments or contributions...

Once again, Congratulations to one and all who have been instrumental in

I spotted it in conjunction with an article published recently (Wikipedia

you?http://www.theregister.co.uk/2012/12/20/cash_rich_wikipedia_chugging)
and ended up assuming both belonged to the same time frame. This one
suggests that WMF fundraisers put out incomplete and misleading
information. I was just wondering what the community's thoughts about these
matters were.

Also, found a recent discussion on the same topic on Quora: Is Wikipedia
collecting more money than required?

Hello Amir,

Thank you for your feedback. Yes, I am aware of parts of the roadmap for
Wikidata and some of its challenges. I might follow up on my work, based on
some of the future developments you have mentioned.

Cheers,

Thank you very much for this article!

It is coming at the right right time. It's starting up, and it needs
localization. I wrote why its localization is especially important here:
 https://blog.wikimedia.org/2012/11/10/translate-wikidata-user-interface/

That post also has relevant links.

It's localization is EASY, because there aren't so many strings to
translate, but its influence is going to be very large. If all goes
according to the plan, in a few months Wikidata will become a repository of
useful statistical data about many subjects - countries, populations, dates
of birth and death, etc. So, while the data is pretty much the same for
everybody, the names of the data properties, such as population, must be
translated to all languages. Property names cannot be translated yet, but a
crucial first step towards making this possible is to translate the
Wikibase extension, which is the technical framework of Wikidata.

Before you approach this, I also strongly suggest to at least read the
 following doc:
 https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Glossary

... and, it would be great to translate it, too - it will help you to
 translate the software.

 Thanks!

*Wikidata: Summing the sum of human knowledge*
 *By Rohini Lakshané*

Have you ever wished you could query Wikipedia with a question? Have you
ever wanted to run a search on Wikipedia to extract data rather than trawl
through reams of Wikipedia pages and interlinks? Have you ever imagined a
world where everyone could freely pool knowledge even without sharing a
common language? Wikidata is set to do all this, and more.

Wikidata, deployed in October this year, is the newest project by the
Wikimedia Foundation, the organisation that runs Wikipedia and its sister
projects. It is a semantic, multilingual, structured database that anyone
can read and edit. It is machine readable, which makes searching, sorting
and handling of data efficient and fast. Like with its siblings, Wikidata’s
content and software are published under a free license.

 *Central repository of links*

Wikidata aims to streamline Wikipedia’s rich but chaotic linking
structure. Every Wikipedia page has ‘interwiki links’ that link it to other
Wikipedia pages. ‘Interlanguage links’ connect pages to other pages on the
same topic published on Wikipedias in different languages, creating a mesh
of links. With around 23 million articles in 285 languages, the linking
structure leads to immense duplication. Wikidata will act as a central
repository for all language links on all Wikipedias, with the ultimate
objective of levelling off the raw data in the language versions. Under the
 *first
 phasehttp://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikidata/Development/Sprint_archive
 * of Wikidata deployment, which is now
 livehttp://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikidata/Development/Sprint_archive,
editors can add interlanguage links (sitelinks) on Wikidata pages.

 *Ask Wikipedia a question*

 The *future
 phaseshttp://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikidata/Technical_proposal
 * of Wikidata deployment involve converging the data found
 in*Infoboxeshttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:Infobox
 * (December 2012 or January 2013), and the enabling of the creation of
lists on Wikipedia (April or March 2013).

Infoboxes -- tables with the summary of the most important information on
the pages -- across Wikipedias are not uniform. Internationalised export
and import of data present in Wikipedia templates such as the Infobox would
greatly enrich its encyclopaedic value. All information present in all
Infoboxes will then come to one central repository from where it could be
updated everywhere else at the same time.

Wikipedia houses lists on assorted topics created by users -- episodes of
the most popular TV shows, heads of state, and even inventors killed by
their own inventions. However, it is currently not possible to query these
lists and cull out specific information. For example, searching the string
“countries with highest GDP” leads to a search results page with the
entries ‘List of countries with the highest GDP per capita’ and ‘Historical
list of ten largest countries by GDP’. But if you were to search for ‘ten
countries with highest GDP in Asia’ you wouldn’t quickly reach the relevant
information even though it exists in these lists. Wikidata will
automatically create a user-queried list to answer semantic queries such
 as, “What were the ten
