Re: [WISPA] Pictures and PR and Donations

2005-09-21 Thread Mark Koskenmaki
I can't. I"m not there.

I just offered space and hosting and a domain for someone to be able to
document what they're doing.

I'm sorry if you take offense at the idea that the blog, though neat and
interesting, doesn't solidly document what's going on.

I sorta doubt the folks doing the stuff have the time, really. Not unless
it was as convenient as the blog.

RE: [WISPA] Pictures and PR and Donations

2005-09-21 Thread Mike Delp
Mark,

If you look at my blog, You can see some of the action I did, and some
photos I took. The main problem is I did it while driving back to work, and
a couple of days after. I did not have time to blog while I was down at
Mac's. Everything is going on at a very fast pace, between actual work, and
planning the next days work. The guys that were at base camp all day doing
administrative type stuff, were also doing "grunt" work whenever needed, and
they were needed quite often. They would have been the only ones that
possibly could have had time to do something, and you have seen what they
have been able to accomplish. My hats are off to Paul Smith and Jeff Allen
and the other guys that have had time to post what has been happening down
there. I would not like to see an open website that anyone can post to, so
it should be left to the few that are maintaining it.

Here is my blog. Not much, and I missed out on the devastation on the
coast.

The latency is not due to the signal type, but the physics of traveling that
distance. DirectWay is data, not TV signals. The service is operated by

I use satellite in my mobile wireless distribution trailers. With commercial
grade accounts the bandwidth is decent, but the inherent latency makes VOIP
typically unusable. You of course notice some delay on the click through
items as well, but what do you expect for a signal that has to travel 50,000
miles round trip? There are better systems than Direcway, but the equipment
costs are ten times more. Direcway's systems are based on TV signal and data
has to be converted in the transition, others are based off data signals
only have far lower latency.

In the US I've heard of it being done. Usually the costs are much higher

you can get a 5 year lease on a LOT of high end backhaul gear and cover many

Re: [WISPA] Satellite Anyone?

2005-09-21 Thread Pete Davis. NoDial.net
The high latency of satelite based internet makes it un-friendly for
VOIP, VPN, online gaming, etc.
The slow upload speed that is usually offered doesn't make it very
friendly for much else.
I have considered getting one to redirect P2P traffic to in order to
free up T1's.

It's common outside the US as there are often not good connections to even
the largest cities in many countries.

In the US I've heard of it being done. Usually the costs are much higher
and the performance lower than lan based systems (for $300 to $400 per month
you can get a 5 year lease on a LOT of high end backhaul gear and cover many
tens of miles).

Hello everyone,

Has anyone successfully used satellite (ie, Directway 7700 or similar)
as their source of upstream bandwidth? If so or if not, why? How did it
turn out? Any suggestions? T1's are hard to come by here, and I'm still
shopping for alternatives.

Walter,  here is a link to the photos

I can’t get the pics to show up on
my blog yet though.

I’mm gonna try wordpress next on my

Camp Shagnasty and

Hope this helps

I wish 'our team' down South would put up
more pictures-not necessarily of the destruction, but of the work that they are
doing.  Like Mac 200' up a tower, Matt on a roof top, people using our
phones and PC's, things like that.

Second-does anyone have a PR person on
staff or 'related'?  Other groups are putting out the things they have
done and getting press.  Our group should be showing some more press with
pictures of people using our installations.

Third-I sent out over the weekend 100
letter emails to friends-relatives-co workers asking them to go to the www.wispa.org site and donate.  A few
responded back that they did do it.  Maybe when some have time you can do
the same.  I asked if they could donate $10-$100-$1000, and I think Mac
got a few $25's out of it.  Not much but buys some gas or healthier
food.  I just donated another $100 myself.

I'd been following the wordpress site (great work). The format for pictures
changed a couple times over the past week, and as of the last format change
all links to pictures seem to be gone. Am I missing it?

Re: [WISPA] Ensign/McCain Broadband Investment & Consumer Choice Act:Senate Bill S.1504

2005-09-21 Thread Tom DeReggi
NO, unless we trade support for support back. This is a bill to promote
Rapid TELCO expansion. Consumer Choice meaning, Choice to use Verizon
instead of Cable Franchise.

The question is, do WISPs consider the cable industry or ILEC industry a
bigger competitor? Making ILECs a stronger competitor does not make Cable
companies a lesser competitor to us.

The question is, will the senators consider adding text to support WISPs, so
that Consumer Choice is really a consumer choice bill?

My opinion is, the longer it takes ILECs to build out their fiber to the
home, the better off WISPs are to gain market share. ILEC fiber buildout is
cost effective only as a tripple play in my mind. Helping ILECS provide
video, I don't see as very smart.

However, these rules could be beneficial to CLECs and ISPs, so that they can
build out their own network also offering the tripple play in competition
with ILECs and Cable Companies, using the rules of the bill.

Ensign/McCain Broadband Investment & Consumer Choice Act: Senate Bill
S.1504

On July 27 Senators John Ensign and John McCain introduced S. 1504, the
Ensign/McCain Broadband Investment and Consumer Choice Act, which among
other things, abolishes cable franchising; reduces cable franchise fees
(perhaps substantially); apparently (we say apparently because the bill
is not entirely clear on these points) grants video providers the right
to use public rights of way in perpetuity; apparently abolishes all
zoning of cellular towers; apparently abolishes telephone franchises
and fees; and attempts to prevent governments from providing the public
with communications service. Senate Bill S.1504 is available here; a
summary is available here and Sen John Ensign's floor remarks are
available here.

Re: [WISPA] Ensign/McCain Broadband Investment & Consumer Choice Act: Senate Bill S.1504

2005-09-21 Thread Tom DeReggi
Don't let the title fool ya. This bill is written by the Telco. Passing
this as is, could be the worst thing that could ever happen to a wireless
provider, As ILEC's tripple play to the home, gets installed in turbo mode.
What iritates me most, is this type of legislation that does not adequately
support WISPs as an intrical player in the telecom market. Based on some
possible changes, this bill could be turned into a bill that actually could
help WISPs. WISPA should have a formal response to this legislation, as far
as modifications, we suggest. I believe its likely that a version of this
bill could go through that gives ILECs more preferencial treatment. It
critical that rules to support WISPs are also added to the bill, if it does
go through.

You need the active Perl instillation files. Apache
is a web server. It is used so you can view the files made by MRTG over the
internet.  If you only care to view them on the one local PC then you don't
need to worry about it.Yes  both will work on an XP Desktop.  That's

Sodo I have the right MRTG, and what ActivePerl do I need? Do I need anything else? If so, what and where (be specific). For now I just need to get everything downloaded I need.
Then I can attempt to put it all together.

Walter,

Here is a link to
some of the pictures I took while John and I were down there this weekend.  http://www.flickr.com/photos/wispa_rick_harnish/44998312/
I have some of Mac up on a
tower 200’ but I have filled up my allotment right now.  I am hoping to get an upgrade to a
larger account very soon.

Concerning the
press, we have been generating press releases and have gotten responses from
the Washington Post, Network World, LATimes and the NYTimes to name a
few.  New America also
did a nice piece last week.  Any
help you can give in that department is appreciated.  With all the Katrina news lately,
stories like this seem to get lost.

I
wish 'our team' down South would put up more pictures-not necessarily of the
destruction, but of the work that they are doing.  Like Mac 200' up a
tower, Matt on a roof top, people using our phones
and PC's, things like that.

Second-does anyone
have a PR person on staff or 'related'?  Other groups are putting out
the things they have done and getting press.  Our group should be
showing some more press with pictures of people using our
installations.

Third-I sent out
over the weekend 100 letter emails to friends-relatives-co workers asking
them to go to the www.wispa.org site and
donate.  A few responded back that they did do it.  Maybe when
some have time you can do the same.  I asked if they could donate
$10-$100-$1000, and I think Mac got a few $25's out of it.  Not much
but buys some gas or healthier food.  I just donated another $100
myself.

[WISPA] OT - Clipboard Synchronizer

2005-09-21 Thread rcomroe

This is definitely off-topic.  But I've
visited wisps that operate a rack of windows box's.  If anyone does and is
interested in a clipboard synchronizer that works between multiple windows
box's (copy from one machine, paste to another, etc) please contact me
OFF-LIST.  I'm looking for beta users willing to help (to give free
copies to).  Again, please hit me OFF-LIST and not disrupt the list for
such an OT subject.

Ensign/McCain Broadband Investment & Consumer Choice Act: Senate Bill

On July 27 Senators John Ensign and John McCain introduced S. 1504, the
Ensign/McCain Broadband Investment and Consumer Choice Act, which among
other things, abolishes cable franchising; reduces cable franchise fees
(perhaps substantially); apparently (we say apparently because the bill is
not entirely clear on these points) grants video providers the right to
use public rights of way in perpetuity; apparently abolishes all zoning of
cellular towers; apparently abolishes telephone franchises
and fees; and attempts to prevent governments from providing the public

summary is available here and Sen John Ensign's floor remarks are

Dear John,

What a magnificent human being you are. I can't even begin to imagine what
you went through, and the toll it has taken on your senses.

Please don't suffer alone. Find someone to talk to - get it out of your
system before it starts to fester.

Subject: [WISPA] Restoring the Gulf Coast

I just got back last night from the gulf affected areas after helping
crews establish Internet and phone service for use by evacuees and
assistance staff. It looks like a thermo-nuclear device detonated on the
gulf coast. Bay of St. Louis (across from Gulf port) is nothing but a
landfill with bull-dozed paths through the debris to clear roadways. I
cried, everyone cried, it was life altering. On television it is awful
but you can go to the other room when you are watching on television.
When you are there you cannot get away from it. I thought I was going to
have an anxiety attack when I first got to Bay of St. Louis. You cannot
smell or feel the sense of what it is like there unless you are actually
there. I took pictures but wondered why. It was almost a sick feeling to
photograph such devastation.

I came home last night and I still feel a little shell shocked. I am not
right. I am definitely more right in the head than those who lived
through the experience and those who have been there since day one. I
don't know how people who are helping can last as long as they are.
There are people there who have been helping non-stop for 2 weeks. I
cannot imagine it. I spent four days helping and thought I was going to
fall apart mentally and physically. I am not as strong as I thought I
was. At least I did some good there. I am glad I went even though I will
never be completely the same person ever again.

[WISPA] Google WiFi

2005-09-21 Thread Blair Davis

I wonder if this announcement might have anything to do with the
request for all the hotspot and ap location data that were being
requested on the list a few weeks ago?

http://money.cnn.com/2005/09/20/technology/google_wifi.reut/index.htm?cnn=yes

Google plans WiFi service
Pages on the search engine's Web site refer to
upcoming product, but company declines comment.

LONDON (Reuters) - Internet search leader Google is preparing to launch
its own wireless Internet service, Google WiFi, according to several
pages found on the company's Web site on Tuesday.

The Google site refers to a product called "Google Secure Access,"
which is designed to "establish a more secure connection while using
Google WiFi," according to a frequently asked questions page
(http://wifi.google.com/faq.html).

A separate page (http://wifi.google.com/download.html) offers a free
download of Google Secure Access.

Google declined to comment.

The launch of a WiFi service would move Google away from its core
Internet search service and into the competitive world of Internet
service providers and telecommunications giants.

Speculation about a forthcoming Google WiFi service has been rife
since August, following an article in Business 2.0 magazine, but the
company has refused to discussed its plans.

WiFi is an increasingly popular technology that is used to provide
high-speed wireless Internet access in homes, business and public
spaces like airports and coffee shops. Google launched a sponsored WiFi
"hotspot" in San Francisco's Union Square district in April with a
start-up called Feeva.

The FAQ says that the Google Secure Access service is in "beta,"
meaning that the company does not consider it a fully finished product
-- similar to the company's Gmail e-mail service.

Google, which is rapidly expanding beyond its core Internet search
service, introduced an instant messaging and telephony service called
Google Talk in August.
