Re: [WISPA] OT, roof rack

2008-09-08 Thread Brian Webster
Marlon,
I would go get a THULE roof rack. I have a set for my 96 Tahoe and they
were previously used on a 98 Chevy Venture van. They have nice square rigid
bars and the bracket method to attach uses a rubber wrap around strap system
that works great. I have taken the same system and was able to quickly mount
them on a Kia roof rack very quickly. They come in a nice black finish and
don't detract from the vehicle looks. You can get the bars in various
widths. They have all kinds of attachments for their system.

Thank You,
Brian Webster

Hi All,

I just got a new install rig. Anyone have any suggestions for replacing the
flimsy roof rack cross members that come with a 2004 GMC Envoy?

Thank,

Does anyone else have a problem with the AS report not seeming to show all your

The sent column shows the AS I'm on sending 1.3 GB at 100%. The received

Re: [WISPA] IP3 for visitor based networks

2008-09-08 Thread Tom DeReggi
Rogelio,

From our evaluation and number of years back, The IP3 didn't do anything
that we weren't already doing with standard OpenSource packages, or lower
cost WISP standard gear like Mikrotik.

But you hit the nail on the head on the value IP3 gives... Turn Key
System. It enables the buyer to hit the ground running with a working
solution, if they didn't really know how to do those type things on their
own, or have the time to figure it out.

Cool, I've love to see a URL showing the features of your $900 soln.

In context, the $3K was a tiny, tiny part of the hundreds of thousands
of dollars that they were spending on networking hardware (Mikrotiks,
 BelAir, etc).

Also, they were looking for turnkey, easy-to-maintain solutions on which
they would a serious revenue stream would depend. And while I don't
know for sure to that IP3 completely provides that, I'm guessing it does
 to some degree...

[WISPA] your thoughts on opps in Africa?

2008-09-08 Thread Rogelio
Is it just me, or do African wireless opportunities rarely materialize?

I've been involved in tons and tons of big ($10+M, in theory) projects
where all sorts of big numbers are thrown out, but for whatever reason,
someone never ultimately pulls the trigger.

(Not sure what I'm missing, but this seems to be a running theme with

I just sent my $5,000 wire transfer fee, just waiting for the $25 million
(some rich guy died with no heirs). Maybe it's because of the number of
scams coming from there, nobody is willing to chance running a wireless
deal.

I mean, seriously, in the IT business, would you even believe someone if
they contacted you with a $10 million dollar deal?

They don't always say it like that.

Often they give the areas that they need coverage and the bandwidth that
they'd like for those areas to have coverage for.

You then do the math of how many (and what mix of) wireless needs there
needs to be, then you start calculating backhaul. Once a BOM is put
together and priced, then it comes to millions of dollars. By the time
it gets to this, you already have a good idea of how they're paying for
it (at least, in theory...)

In my experience, the person that says, I have a $x M deal is usually
full of crap.

Funny you should mention that... we have had equipment tribalized here

Same thing applies.
I have pedigreed native American blood in my veins folks, so don't think I'm

The expression indian giving is rooted in fact. It is the culture of
common ownership.
Even if you have an agreement signed by the tribal elders, the chapter

Is it just me, or do African wireless opportunities rarely materialize?

I've been involved in tons and tons of big ($10+M, in theory) projects
where all sorts of big numbers are thrown out, but for whatever reason,
someone never ultimately pulls the trigger.

(Not sure what I'm missing, but this seems to be a running theme with
African projects I've ever gotten pulled in on.)

My guess is that the integrators who deal with the Africans get a
certain degree of credibility, particularly if they have westerners at
their beck and call to help a country figure out what it wants.

In my experience, they seem to know they need something, they're not
sure what that something is, and they've got real funds, they just don't
know how they want to spend it and are skeptical of giving it to
businesses that will not invest long term in their infrastructure / economy.

We do some business there but are very careful with every transaction. Cash up
front most of the time. I think that is the main theme here. Just go in
understanding the many unknowns, be cautious and don't get too involved until
real money can be confirmed.

That being said, no one can argue that the opportunities are huge in
underdeveloped economies if you can find the right partner/customer.

Re: [WISPA] your thoughts on opps in Africa?

2008-09-08 Thread Tom DeReggi
There is a tremendous opportunity in Africa for Wireless Broadband.
It has some of the the most important factors for success... need,
demand, and shortage of Options, Alternatives not cost or technically
feasible
You'd be amazed how much businesses will pay for Broadband out there. (I
heard some stories 5-6 year backs where people were paying DS3 prices for
like ISDN-T1 speeds)
However, conducting business in Africa is much much different. One has to
know what they are doing politically. Much easier for someone that knows and
understands the local culture.

I had a couple friends that did both PC exporting and Broadband there. He
made a killing with PCs, not sure the outcome of the Broadband venture, to
date.
But, yeah... It was All Cash Business, if you wanted to get paid, and it
wasn't uncommon to have to pay bribes to conduct business.
Lots of custom issues/tricks, to get gear to over their cost effectively.

But hey, Africa is a large diverse place, just like anywhere, it probably
isn't fair to make generalizations and group everything in the same box.
Jungle, desert, big cities, all have different challenges.

Turned off any oil company, regardless of investment or pre existing

Re: [WISPA] Tower general contractors

2008-09-08 Thread Steve Barnes
The number UNO issue when you deal with Crowne Castle is get an
agreement up front of what all your requirements are. They took me to
the cleaners. I will NEVER deal with them ever again. NEVER

Quote for a Location was given $300/month. Then we agreed so they said
fill out this Application. Filled it out and got a bill for $1500 (APP
FEE). Project manager called and said that now that we are approved. We
can proceed once the received a $2500 PO for Structural analysis. Then
the salesman called back and informed the $300/month was actually
$875/month. Then like you they decided my certified climbers did not
meet their requirements. The would handle the install for $5000.00.
Then there would be a $1000 fee for Inspection of what I put on the
ground.

Needless to say I did not Pay any but a $1500 Fee that they split up to
supposedly cover their cost. I found an approved installer and Paid him
$1500. Got them back down to $350/month by working with another renter
on the same tower. Only way we got it all worked out was I had all my
original Documentation from them. Do The Same.

PS. Thanks Scott

Having a hard time finding a general with anything near that. Any

We're only mounting equipment around 30 feet up the tower (planned to
even use a bucket truck), and putting in a little enclosure on the
