Shielded cable for anything over 20ft above ground.  flooded cable for

Nope.  no Ethernet failures.

Re: [WISPA] Damn, Ubiquiti

2008-10-22 Thread Chuck McCown - 3
It has a working name of "NanoStinger". I am being coy. It is a private
label project I am doing for Charles. Same parts as all superstingers. Just a
custom case made for the Nano. It is essentially a regular 2.4 high gain flat
panel. Only 14" square. Only one mount. Quick and easy to deploy.

I'm just waiting to see how many Nano's get completely busted. They use the
regular mounting, but then it's a HUGE panel that just fits over the Nano and
has a pigtail that you plug into the external port. Not sure I really
understand the concept, when you could just use a regular 2.4ghz antenna and do
the same thing.

So, it's not really a Stinger, more of an external antenna with pigtail that
slips over the top of the Nano. And did I mention it's a HUGE square flat
panel? ;)

Re: [WISPA] Damn, Ubiquiti

2008-10-22 Thread David Hulsebus
We use shielded cable for all our outdoor POE installs. We also use an
APC ethernet surge protector after a grounded 12V, PacWireless POE
injector. I throw away all the non-grounded injectors and power
supplies when they come out of the box - from any supplier. I have 30
NS5's in use and have lost one due to an ethernet issue since last fall.
The router it was attached to survived. The customer lost a well pump,
and a few other things as a result of a lightning strike about 200 ft
from the house. They lost the tree it hit too. I'm surprised that we
didn't loose the rf side with so much energy in the air that close. I
haven't had any experience with the NS2 or PS2.

Please close this thread. The alleged infraction did not happen within
WISPA resources and is no longer a thread worthy of this dialog as it
would appear all viewpoints have been discussed about this several
times for several years. In essence the discussion of alleged spam is
now filling my inbox with more useless space than any spam I received
today.
Thank you for closing this thread,

The definition of spam is an unsolicited e-mail. Obviously we didn't
ask
you to sendus the request so it was an unsolicited e-mail. Just because
you
politely ask to
send spam doesn't make it right.

The new products look interesting, but if they are like other Ubiquity

Just like any 802.11a product, the NS5s will run circles around Canopy
if properly deployed. So yeah, you can consider them as a Canopy

Customer is looking for a good Task Management Solution.

I've found these two online solutions:

I wouldn't mind installing a Linux server solution for this in my
datacenter, but I don't know of one.

Any thoughts are appreciated.

Thanks.

The thing that has ALWAYS been troublesome to me is getting off
these lists. It is the reason, frankly, that I approached it as I
did. Either way, I'm not going to continue in this argument or
discussion (whatever term you want to apply).

I will say again to all on this list...if you want off the list I
created, you have but to ask.

I understand your position. I'm not trying to justify any action on
my part, either. I don't even feel the need to do so. I recognise
that the email both frustrated and angered you. In truth, I even
agree with your position to a point. I simply felt like this was a
better approach than sending the message with the advertisement
first. If you disagree, that is your right. Consider this my
public apology to you (and others) if you are or were offended by
this approach. As the original message stated, anyone who requests
it either by following the link in the message OR by sending me a
direct email WILL be removed and will NOT be seeing further email
from me on this subject.

2008-10-22 Thread Faisal Imtiaz
I would agree with you Jeff.

Associations such as WISPA are a fine balance of Vendors and WISP's, without
either of them the association would just be a casual 'watering hole' -:)

Getting annoyed at a particular vendor or even a particular person is
understandable, but a public 'lashing out' against a Vendor Member(s) of
Association, over a Email Ad's, on the list is a bit over the top.

Just my two cents.

(it takes less time to hit the delete key than the write emails)

Re: [WISPA] Spammers or not?

2008-10-22 Thread Paul Dowling
The definition of spam is an unsolicited e-mail. Obviously we didn't ask
you to sendus the request so it was an unsolicited e-mail. Just because you
politely ask to
send spam doesn't make it right.

Just like any 802.11a product, the NS5s will run circles around Canopy
if properly deployed. So yeah, you can consider them as a Canopy
 replacement. :^)

That is the standard config for mail-man. I think there are well over 10
digits of this software installed around the planet in this method.

There was no spam sent. In fact, the original message was intended
to ask your permission to do so. The unsubscribe is normal for a
mailman list. It is not "double opt-out" at all. It is a
confirmation message. The reason I configured it that way was so
that you could be certain you were no longer subscribed.

Re: [WISPA] Damn, Ubiquiti

2008-10-22 Thread Matt Larsen - Lists
I am having great luck with the Nanostation5 radios. The NS2 radios
have a terrible antenna, so I'm sticking to Tranzeos for 2.4ghz use.
I'd love to see an NS9 at some point.

The new products look interesting, but if they are like other Ubiquity
"new product releases" - they are vaporware for a while. No one has any
stock of them and my guess is that the first round that makes it to the
states is going to be beta.

Just like any 802.11a product, the NS5s will run circles around Canopy
if properly deployed. So yeah, you can consider them as a Canopy
replacement. :^)

I was pissed when Butch Evans sent his spam from the list. You click a link
to unsubscribe, then they send you another e-mail to verify your
unsubscription and you have to return the e-mail or click on a link. Double

entire network.

Re: [WISPA] Damn, Ubiquiti

2008-10-22 Thread Tom Sharples
We've been testing the nanostations with the idea of loading our own code
onto them. Look good so far other than some minor bugs. They provide an SDK
altho with very limited support (actually none) for the SDK itself. So if
you're Linux conversant and have time to experiment and test it's an
interesting option. They are mechanically very light duty (one of our
customers dropped one and it broke) so not something we'd want to use in an
industrial setting.

I have and use NS2/5's as all my CPE gear now, thats why I am excited
to see the Loco/Bullet. The Loco/Bullet
are new PCB's (well the bullet is for sure, maybe not the loco) so I
want to get my hands on a few (or people who have) and see how they
perform.

As far as I'm concerned the present nanostations are beta. One recent
AirOS version didn't let you download the configuration, the next
version breaks wpa2-aes. I've had zero trouble getting nanostations for
a couple months. I have had plenty of trouble deploying them and
figuring out their quirks. I'd like to see some software improvements as
well.

Post reviews if anyone gets any of these. I wonder if they've solved their
supply line issues...

[WISPA] [Tranzeo] New Update - Tranzeo/Mtik disconnect issue Oct 10th, 2008

2008-10-22 Thread Dennis Burgess - LinkTechs.net
Just a FYI, I got this from Mikrotik.. I wanted to make sure I sent it
out to everyone..

The tranzeo timestamp issues comes from tranzeo implementing a timestamp
check that is not included in the 802.11 standard for ap to client
communications.

The timestamp check is included in the standard for the adhoc (IBSS)
wireless mode (which is not commonly used and Mikrotik does not support)
-- and there is are reasons that it is included in adhoc mode and not in
ap to client mode.

The standard requires clients to accept the beacon timestamp
unconditionally in ap to client mode. Tranzeo has added a specific
check because they said they thought it is logical that the check be
applied to ap to client mode. Good standards implementations do not add
things to a standard. These standards are made by IEEE committees of
engineers that are very specific on what they include and don't
include. If a company wants to change a standard, then they need to
join the committee and, through peer review, get a new standard approved.

We have made a work-around for their violation of the standard. But
rather than somebody saying thank you, the old saying of 'no good deed
goes unpunished' is proven again. We make many work-arounds for
incorrect standards implementations and extension by companies such as
Microsoft, Realtek, and now Tranzeo. We do that to help our customers,
but in reality, the vendors that do not follow the standards should fix
the problem.

In summary, it is very unfair that we are blamed for problems made by
another company that does not implement the standard correctly. Many
people in this business don't do it just for money, but because they
like making things (be it WISP or equipment for WISP). Rants without
basis kind of put a wet blanket on the whole party.

For those that would like to research this, here a clear reference from
the 802.11 standard that is pertinent:

From 802.11-2007, 11.1.1.1 TSF for infrastructure networks:
... A receiving STA shall always accept the timing information in Beacon
frames sent from the AP servicing its BSS. If a STAâEUR^(TM)s TSF timer
is different
from the timestamp in the received Beacon frame, the receiving STA shall
set
its local TSF timer to the received timestamp value.

Tranzeo decided to assume that receiving a beacon with timestamp less
than in previous beacon indicates that the AP has restarted (the
standard has another method to handle restarted ap units). This check
is not in the standard and this a tranzeo addition to the standard that
has cause the disconnect problem that Ryan has suffered from.

Regards,

Mikrotik
