Re: [WISPA] Billing Solution

2018-01-17 Thread Darin Steffl
We use Azotel. It doesn't look the prettiest with the user interface but it
has tons of features and is very reliable. They host it in the cloud and do
all the backups, etc. In 6 years we've had maybe 30 minutes of downtime.

Re: [WISPA] Net neutrality bandwidth providers

2017-12-15 Thread Darin Steffl
Dan,

You have to understand if you're selling a residential internet package, it
is NOT dedicated. There has to be some oversubscription allowed for the ISP
to make a profit. If every sub we had used their plan 24/7 and expected the
speed to always be there and not dip down, we wouldn't make money and would
shutdown.

So yes, it is wrong and hurts an ISP if customers use and expect to max out
their connection all the time but specifically during the evening peak.
That's where it matters most.

If customers always want their bandwidth then they need to pay more to
upgrade backhaul, ap's, etc. If they're OK with slightly slower speeds
during peak but enough to still stream and not feel slow, then prices can
remain level.

Power companies issue peak time alerts during the summer and winter to
prevent brownouts or congestion in our terms. And they specifically state
in their newsletter that if people don't reduce their power demands during
their peak times, rates are going to increase as it costs more to handle
that load.

[WISPA] Justin Wilson?

2014-05-15 Thread Darin Steffl
I have been trying to get ahold of Justin Wilson who started a project for
me in April and he was out of commission for a little bit but now I haven't
heard from him since. I have called his cell #, sent him 5 emails to

see he has sent emails out to the list multiple times in the last few weeks
but he's never responded to me.

Anyone have any special tricks to get him to talk? My project is quite
simple and he said it would take no more than 2 hours tops but he hasn't

Josh, I did see his email go out right before mine and checked and saw
other messages from him to the list over the last 2-3 weeks when I haven't
heard anything back from him. I've politely asked if he is able to complete
this for me and if not, please simply reply that he cannot complete the
project so I can find another consultant. I've never been mad in the emails
and continue to ask if he can complete our project or not so I can move on.
Sounds like I'm beating a dead horse and I'll probably just move on and try
to get my prepaid hours back. We'll see if anyone can pull some strings for
me.

Re: [WISPA] Small IP PBX - Grandstream UCM

I put it in for a 12 extension small business and it's working great. Lots
of firmware updates and new features being added every month or so. They're
actively developing the platform which is nice. It's cost effective and
free updates.

Pair this with flowroute for your sip trunks and you have a solid solution.
We used yealink for the phones but the grandstream phones should work great
too and have auto provisioning then.

http://www.vitelity.com/services_vfax/

Works perfect. Order the Fax Enable device and it will allow the old fax
machine to function perfectly. You also get the benefit of fax-to-email
capability if they want it turned on. Unless they do a ton of faxes each
month, the standard per minute rates are the way to go.

I have a customer that we installed an IP phone system for. They moved

and we go over a wireless link to the new office where they use their
internet and IP phones, and all works great.

So their fax machine sits at their old location and they want it in their
new location. They are not interested in doing Internet fax at this time,
but I may have to introduce it again. A while ago we bought some
Grandstream gateway devices. We have them configured correctly and they
transmit and receive voice just fine, just no fax.

So, the scenario would be the CO goes into a gateway device to convert to
digital, goes over the LAN to the other gateway device. That device hooks
up to the fax machine. If someone has done this before can you share the
products you may have used? The products we have say they will work this
way, but no luck, just voice transmission. I may have a bad device as well.

Also, is there any internet fax services that allow users to use their
existing fax machine? I know it's a little weird to ask that, but some
people have a hard time with change using their PC to send faxes

As a general rule, any rate center's numbers can be made portable if they
aren't already so. It can worst case take six moths to implement. But
that was usually done long ago.

However, in order to port a number into a rate center, the carrier (CLEC)
needs connectivity to the tandem switch that serves that rate center, which
may belong to the ILEC in that rate center, or a third ILEC, not the one in
the bigger exchange next door. If you tell me the rate centers in question
I may be able to determine that for you. CenturyTel[/link] is notorious
for being uncooperative, hoping state regulators let them bend the rules
their way. And some rural ILECs think they're exempt from interconnection
rules, though they're not. So it would not be surprising if the underlying
CLECs just don't touch those RCs.

We have a customer on fringe of a rural Century Tel area and both of our

Are there remote areas where you still can't port a number? Is there a way
to find out if anyone can port this number? Like a master list or database
 I can search?

Re: [WISPA] AF and rain storm

2013-12-21 Thread Darin Steffl
What OSPF settings do you use to facilitate such a quick fail over to tik
backups? Also, this wouldn't switch over until the link completely died so
do you do anything special to have OSPF handle this or do you have to wait
for it to die? I can just see the link getting bad enough that it will send
the smallest amount of data but not drop thus limiting the capacity to even
less than a backup link in place.

I remember chuck talking about something in the forums about dropping
ethernet past a certain signal threshold or when RF link drops.

5GHz MT links to fall back on. I just thought it was cool to see
 everything working like it should.

This happened tonight. You can see our TP weather station rainfall graph.
The weather station is just down the hill from pinoak tower (no longer a
real pinoak). The AF link drops off, the MT 5GHz link ramping up as the AF
link drops and throughput on the drain pipe stays stable while all this was
 happening and no lost packets.

There is also link path so you can see distance and actual signal of the
link right now with just basically mist.

You can almost graph the rainfall rate by the throughput on the MT backup
 link J

[WISPA] TP-Link TL-WR841N Wireless Drops?

2012-10-09 Thread Darin Steffl
Hey guys,

This is the router that I have been handing out to every new customer
because I wanted to make sure they all had a reliable router and not blame
my service for an issue with their own router. So far, 4 out of 25 routers
have had wireless problems where either no devices can connect at all even
with a factory reset or the wireless works for a few days and then shuts
off completely and requires a reboot to fix it. Has anyone experienced
issues with this particular model? I have hardware version 7.1 and 7.2. The
rest seem to be fine but so far this is a 16% failure rate on these routers
for me.

Would love to hear if there are similar issues or maybe I just received bad
batches from Amazon.

Re: [WISPA] Netflix to offer free caches to ISPs

2012-06-05 Thread Darin Steffl
They require at least 2Gbps of Netflix traffic across your network at all
time and require you connect the box to a 10Gbps port to our network. I
really doubt there are many WISP's out there running this much Netflix
traffic at one time. A few but nowhere near the majority. Also, for many of
us, this probably isn't the problem of running out of internet transit but
rather having AP's at capacity for which this would not solve at all.

More information from Netflix itself is here:

Does anyone here plan to pursue this? How much would something like
this actually resolve your Netflix issues, or is the bottleneck inside
your network rather than at the access link?

[WISPA] Site Survey Method

2012-05-16 Thread Darin Steffl
Hey guys,

Trying to figure out a good way to do site surveys and monitor signal
strength while on the customer's roof for a one-man job. The best I have
come up with is having a portable power pack on the ground with a POE
injector with two ethernet cables: one going to the nanobridge, one to a
netbook or laptop on the roof. Another option would be to have the same
setup but with a wireless router with the battery pack and poe injector so
only one ethernet going to the roof to the nanobridge and either a netbook
or android tablet to login to AirOS to setup and check signal levels.

Any advice on how you guys do this with one person? Thanks!

cut down on tech support calls if the router is stable.

They should have no reason to do that and if they do, they're only causing
problems for themselves with double or triple NAT. I make it clear when I
install that the router I give them is the only router they can use and I
