Re: [WISPA] grant funds ideas

2009-03-03 Thread Ross Cornett
We all have a substancial amount of capital invested in our own ventures...
If the Government would like to reimburse us on our investments before they
make the Internet a invaluable investment. I wouldn't have much issue with
that. However, from what I see they are just trying to make the Internet a
free public right. And for what reason? If someone wants something, free
enterprise usually puts it in place with a price. The price is to make sure
it benefits the entrepreneur and the customer. Free benefits only the
customer. Doesn't build revenue that pays for taxes, employees, sparsk
anyones economy Get me drift

So, in short what would I like to see., I would like to see grant money
go to those that have already embarked on the challenge of populating the
rural markets with quality Internet service with Qaulity Customer service
behind it.

I have yet to receive any communication or dollars from my government, other
than to spend more money on their so called public safety initiatives, like
calea...

...enough, that should get the sounding board moving...just incase anyone
needs to know who posted such a Capitalistic Republican view.

 Hi All,

I've asked before but saw no discussion so here it is again

If WISPA gets a chance to give input to the grant process, what should we
 tell the government?

I can't believe that NO ONE here has any input on this at all. Did my
 last
post fail to make it through? Or should we not give any input into the
process if given the chance? We'll just let the telco's get all of it
 then?

Re: [WISPA] Email

2008-05-28 Thread Ross Cornett
Martha,

It sounds very similar to how we do it also. However, the mounting expenses
of Anti Spam services, mail sever software costs, etc... Have begun to
strike up this conversation. Email is one of the most expensive service
that we offer and receive zero revenue for.

Thanks for the feedback.

We charge $5 a month if you have an email only account. Otherwise email
is included in our web hosting and Internet services. People who already
have our email service and either take down their web site or no longer
have our Internet seem to want to keep their address and are willing to
pay $60 a year for it. We don't sell email only otherwise.

[WISPA] Sector Placement

2008-04-23 Thread Ross Cornett
Anyone know for a fact if it is worthy to seperate sector antennas on the same
tower. Using 2.4 H Pol 16 db We are readying our 31st tower location and I
have been asked why do we seperate the sectors . Besides the reasonable fact
that if you place 3 sectors on a 3 sided tower at the exact same height, you
will never be able to climb over them or at least with great difficulty.

I would like to know first hand examples of anyone having issues or had to move
them apart to resolve any issues. I don't like doing things twice... you
advise is greatly appreciated...

[WISPA] Frontier communications is blocking access to our VOIP

2008-04-10 Thread Ross Cornett
Anyone know of anything that can help me here?

Frontier communciations is allowing us to port numbers out of their
territory, but they are blocking callers from their areas from calling those
numbers

Is this legal? Does anyone have any ideas that can help me...

We are working with Heartland Communciations in Paducah Kentucky. We get
our bandwidth from them. They also do our VOIP. When we switched from our
Illinois Consolidated telephone system a centrex system. We moved to our
inhouse VOIP provided by Heartland Communications in Paducah Kentucky.
Frontier Communications started blocking their callers from calling our
office and any dialup numbers we ported also...

By the way Illinois Consolidated, an independant in Central Illinois has
been really nice working with us on this I can't say enough about their
assistance...

My dialups are going fast If I can't get a solutionlet alone my office
will never be able to use the VOIP that I have fibered to my office

Re: [WISPA] Frontier communications is blocking access to our VOIP

2008-04-10 Thread Ross Cornett
We found that ICTC (Illinois Consolidated Telephone Company) and Frontier
use the same tandem in Mattoon illinois... Frontier will pass calls from
Frontier to ICTC... However, when we port a number from ICTC, they will not
hand the call over to heartland communications, which is our new VOIP
provider... I called the ICC(Illinois Commerce Commission) they told me I
had to call the FCC they told me until I contacted a lawyer and they would
not talk to me... I can't believe the red tape...

In the meantime, I have customers in Frontier Communications, that are
losing service due to this mishap...

Have your CLEC call them and make sure it is not just a routing issue
or problem in their phone switch. We've run into this quite a bit with
rural telco's in our area. If they are truly blocking calls to your
numbers, complain to your state's public utility comission ASAP!

 as the router.

A bit of cleverness with the Mikrotik hotspot package should get you
what you're looking for. Make sure everyone on that network has to go
through the Mikrotik system (make it the network-wide DHCP server, for
instance), so it can keep track of things. If you're adding wireless APs
at the same time, you can either have them act as DHCP relays, or just
make them transparent bridges so guests are still talking to that
central router on the IP level. The latter is probably simpler, and in a
small-scale setup like this the bridging shouldn't cause any problems.

Users who aren't logged in can be forced to a certain page (the login
page in Mikrotik parlance), which can display the TC. After they log
in (make it a simple 'I Agree' button, and internally use MAC
authentication), just redirect them to the company portal page. They'll
be logged in at that point and can browse freely.

[WISPA] Billing suggestings

2008-01-14 Thread Ross Cornett
Hey guys,

I am in a pickle here with my client tracking database. We had a
propriatary softward made for us and it is not a great scenario for us.
This software stored data in an access database and primarily was client
contact, reminding renewals for mailing bills...etc...

What are you all using that might be a good transition for me...

Thanks in advance...

I too would say the same. Initially they did a good job, but soon after
they began to be in effective and variable. We contacted them and got very
little satisfaction. so, we are now trying mikrotiks at every tower. like
a 333... details will follow with our success or failure. We have
implemented them at 4 or 5 towers and will be puting them at 30 towers...

I have been considering the Net Equalizer as a possible platform for
bandwidth management. I know that topics like this often lead to a
myriad of posts about bandwidth management normally. If possible I would
like to hear feedback from people who have actually used this one
appliance to hear about any advantages or disadvantages to use of this
device for managing bandwidth in WISP networks. I appreciate hearing
from any past or present users of the Net Equalizer platform.

Look at www.powercode.com.

It's pricy for WISPs, but you have to look at where you are in your business
and where you're going. We bought in at the 750-customer level, and it was
$5800. The bandwidth manager is an ImageStream router with their software
loaded on it (they're partnering). There is a charge per month for software
maintenance (I think we're paying like $150 per month) and if you want tech
support there's a per-incident charge or a monthly support package for
another $150.

This software, along with the BMU, should allow us to manage remote pops as
well (disconnected from our main network). Even in other towns, or smaller
WISPs that we purchase or partner with. With this, we should be able to
provide great back-end sales, billing, and support while the local tech or
partner works on the network.

I partnered with a competitor to leverage our assets to move quicker with
growth.

what is the cost like on that?

  Mark Nash wrote:
We have just signed on with PowerCode. We like the interface, and it is
much more than billing. It's got a bandwidth manager, auto-account shut-off
for nonpayment, CRM, lead-tracking, commission-tracking.

So far so good, we billed with it this month and that's all we've done. I
know that there are other WISPs that have used them in the past, and I
received varying degrees of opinions when I asked about them previously.
I'll let you know how it goes. They are a WISPA vendor member now, as I
understand it.

It was brought to my attention yesterday that some WISPs put tower sections
on grain legs.

How many of you have done this?

Could you describe the particulars of those installations?

Pictures?

Did you have an engineer approve your designs?

probably be selling Direc TV and Dish along with our wireless Internet.
Anyone else doing this? What is good or bad about this? How do I go
about becoming a dealer for these products? I have sales experience in
Cable TV industry. I used to sell to Motels and such for 3 states. I
know we could do this. I also want to do television for the motels

Not wanting to start a bidding war, but where do you draw that line? I

Okay, sixty dollars, but that's my final offer. :)

My point really was that, since the Barracuda is just PC hardware,
it's not a total loss (and probably not worth shooting). Even if you
don't want to filter email with it, it still has some value. (From what
I know of how they're built, I'd guess a recent Barracuda 400, which
retails for about $4000, is probably worth $1000 or so from the hardware
included. Paradoxically, the older ones are probably worth a bit more,
as they had a hardware RAID controller instead of using Linux software
RAID.)

If you really were gonna shoot it (and that wasn't just a gesture of
frustration), seriously, between Butch Evans and I, we'll find a good
home for it (that has nothing to do with email).

Okay, sixty dollars, but that's my final offer. :)

My point really was that, since the Barracuda is just PC hardware,
it's not a total loss (and probably not worth shooting). Even if you
don't want to filter email with it, it still has some value. (From
what

I know of how they're built, I'd guess a recent Barracuda 400, which
retails for about $4000, is probably worth $1000 or so from the
hardware

Be offended about what? How much someone is charging for Anti SPAM service
using a Barracuda?
The Barracuda's are fixed cost based on the device type, so the prices
should be competitive.

Barracuda Networks used to do 100 mailboxes for $100 per month, I think.

I will more then likely offend a few people here but I've asked several
people here that have their own Barracuda's for quotes and noone can seem
to touch the price I have been paying for 7+ yrs. I suppose their costs
are much higher and are trying to recoup it on a low volume as opposed to
the larger mail / hosting outfits.

Datapipe uses the Iron Port appliance and they also ANSWER their phone

actually called them this past year on Christmas with an issue I had with
a domain.

Hit me up off-list if you want more information or input concerning this.

Currently we do in-house email. We always have one problem or another

We

does
anyone know of a free Exchange host out there that will download pop3

I think what Dave was trying to make a point about was that folks at
Barracuda acted as if selling used hardware to others may not allow the new
owner to purchase updates, maintenance, etc. Dave talked to them, I did
not. The impression was that they would not support second-hand hardware.
It might be a good idea for you, Ross, to make a call to Barracuda and see
what the terms would be for update support for a new owner of this unit
before you sell it. At least then you would be able to tell a new potential
owner what to expect as far as costs to continue support for the unit. The
Barracuda units do work but if you do not buy support agreements for
updates and such then it is useless. The unit can be good as new and not
worth a nickel if the manufacturer will not support it with new spam and
virus signature updates.

There is no way you would know any of this, Ross. We have had a bad
experience with Barracuda regarding used hardware. That was all that was
being cautioned here. If you find out what the terms are for transferring
used hardware to new owners I would like to know what you find.

Fair warning for anyone who's interested in this: Check with Barracuda
first, to be sure you can actually do this. A few months back, I picked
up a used Barracuda Spam Firewall on eBay, and they wouldn't activate it

There were other odd circumstances involving this particular unit, but I

to get the serial number of the unit first, as that's how they track

Wow, that is hidden deep into their users agreement. Since you have to

Ok. It is final. You cannot resell your Barracuda box to anyone and expect
Barracuda to license it. I just spoke with a VP of sales and he said just
that. I told him that they should tell people this when they buy them and
he told me they try to tell everyone. I will tell you this I wasn't
told. $2500 later it isn't worth a dime.

I did ask why they cannot refurb the machine for a fee and then allow it to
be resold. They told me it wasn't policy to do this. I look at it as this
is how they are protecting their margins on new sales. No buy back no
resale, no good, but I will have fun when I take my .270 and try to paint a
smiley face on it from 200 yards away. Oh, he did mention that it is still
a functioning server if I wanted to use as such. Anyway, end of thread for
me. I just want you all to know this if you consider purchasing one. Stay
with it for 3 years or you lost your investment.

Thanks for the headsup on this guys. Now we know. I hope I stuck to the

their 2 concerns I noted are their margins and their liability of customer
data being passed onto the buyer and puting a companies data at risk and be
sued.. They fear being sued because of the data that this box captures,
they made the box, so they are liable for it. Kind of like a gun
manufacturer, match manufacturers, knife manufacturers...and so on...get
their paranoid view yet, when it can all be managed by wipeing or replaceing
a hard drive... oh well...

They will not budge on this. I told them I would inform the industry and it

There will likely be cases where that's impossible.

Lets say that I have a customer that's a hotel. They, at first, only know
the ip addy or mac addy. A subpoena comes to me looking for info on the
user in question. There's no way to use the hotel's Linksys hardware to
do the tap to find the specific think that LEA is looking for. Can't
change the network because any action on our side tips off the suspect.

In some cases it won't be possible to filter out all info. Especially if
we don't know what we're looking for (which we won't and shouldn't) as far
as specific data goes.

I talked to the head of the FBI's CALEA group for about an hour again
yesterday. They know full well that there are just some things that can't
be done. At the end of the day, the just need our help when and where we
can give it to them. There are far too many possibilities to deal with
every single possible situation, we know that, they know that.

As long as we make a real effort to help I don't think we have to worry
about getting in trouble. It's those that thumb their noses that will run
enforcement risks.

I was told that there has NEVER been an enforcement issue occur.

In my opinion, I don;t think it will fly because of NAT.
The law inforcement agrency needs to be able to differenciate what
customer traffic is comming from, and if you use NAT for any of your
customers, the facilities based upstream provider would have no way to
identify the end user, and the WISP would become the customer and be
liable. To many degrees of seperation at the upstream for the captured
data to be meaningful.

Hm.

It'd be one heckuva stretch, but by reading the letter (as opposed to
the spirit) of that paragraph, many smaller WISPs would automatically
be exempt. I know my office has acquired broadband Internet access
service from a facilities-based provider (our upstream ISP) and we're
enabling our customers to access the Internet from their respective
establishments (i.e. our customers pay for Internet at their homes or
offices).

By the letter of that paragraph (and, to be fair, I haven't read all
the context surrounding it) most any single-homed WISP would be
exempt, as they could just say go talk to our upstream. (I doubt
it'd work for multi-homed ISPs, as that would require multiple
upstreams to be tapped and somehow synchronized, which is probably
technically annoying.)

Since we cannot authorize taxes, we can charge fees that will allow us to

I think you better just take a rate increase and chalk it up to
increased expenses all the way around as opposed to creating a CALEA
charge line item. Adding a fee as a line item could get you in trouble
with the FTC if not approved as a legitimate added government fee (just
my opinion, nothing to base this on other than my gut). Your fuel and
electricity have jumped considerably I am sure. I am considering a rate
increase over these added costs also. I see no way around it. I have
never raised my rates in 10 years. Times are changing I am afraid.

I appreciated Tim's remarks, but this sounded very much like a response from
someone that is getting fed by the process of CALEA. If I am wrong I duly
appologize. if I am correct then I have said enough.

I agree with you Sam. It boils down to Uncle Sam is pushing an INTERNET
SECURITY TAX on the everyone in the industry and only funding the TELCO's
Side of it and we have no say so in the matter. They have plenty of
resources and just determined that we can take it or shut down. This too is
another way that the multi funded telcos will continue to be fed by the feds
and we will have to pickup the scraps that the telco's don't have time or
the interest to reach. Now doing that will just be a tougher battle.

It must be nice getting a subcity... only a telcos know how to spell
that the rest of us have never had money give to us we have to earn
it. lol

VoIP. Essentially, they argued that it isn't possible for them to keep
up with the pace of technology. (By the way, this isn't an ability
issue, the FBI and Secret Service, ect. have exceptionally talented
teams. Instead it really is a resource issue; the number of staff they
have to cover these issues can't cover the scale of the problem.)
So I, as a small provider, am suppose to have more and better resources

we can install them when they are needed. It is highly unreasonable for the
FBI to ask everyone to have a utility and manage this utility when it will
never be used by a very large portion of our industry. It is far cheaper
for the government to sameday ship their device to us anywhere in the nation

Even if you do come up with a way to handle LI in time for the deadline
that is only going to solve one part of CALEA. We checked with Cisco in
the beginning regarding CALEA. We were assured they were working on it and
would have a solution in time (much the same way WISPA has). We now have
Cisco's solution and understand it does exactly what they say it would do;
namely LI. Unfortunately, LI isn't enough as I have outlined in other
posts. We have had to develop the rest of the solution on our own.

Reread my post on the practical requirements of dealing with ELSUR and
check with your attorneys. I think you'll find no technical solution to
those requirements.

I thank all of you. I have always considered my success in this business

We have a whale of a day planned. The girls made up balloons and various

That is what I was looking for. We all serve the same interest and that is
customer satisfaction. I did learn a great deal from you all providing me
your feedback. Our scenario has been been using bulk ordered refurbs. We
used to be all Linksys until we started seeing a high failure rate. Power
in this area is seems to be poor. intermittent flickers cause a router to
loose its config or completely slam it. The customer never tells us it was
due to power until we ask a few simple questions. Then we realize we are
being misinformed. Moved to the netgears to see what they could do and
started out with refurbs and now I believe we are paying for htat decision.
I will once again consider the linkys and I will surely look into the
belkin. I have also been informed that motorola was putting out a good
router, the BR700 but they are discontinued. So, thank you to all that have
provided me this feedback.

Re: [WISPA] $20 'naked' DSL

2007-01-29 Thread Ross Cornett
I have not and will not be concerned about the phone company. We all should
be streaming our businesses to have multiple revenue streams to adjust to
the influx of customers coming and going from DSL and Cable. I don't know
what it is like in your areas, but just because they are here doesn't mean
any of the following.

1. their networks are capable even after upgrading.
2. they have any clue on costomer service and the needs of their valued
customers

3. the customer is typically sick of the out of town influence
4. they cannot stay on a price point without stuffing all the inclusives
down the customers throat.
5. they can never have the quality control that we have when we manage our
networks becuase we care down to the placement of the ethernet in the home
for the customers
6. computers are always going to create the need for us to repair them.
ATT can't manage a phone let alone a computer
7. When you get so big as they are money is everything. We alwasy maintain
customer relationships are everything.

8. ok... you get my point.

As for $99 per month for you 256K... i am underpriced that is what the
market will do for you.

It is an abosolute shame that the large companies have destroyed the margins
in this business. They found that they cann't manage the money from the
phone services and now when they all had a chance to make some real money
the screwed that up too. Give it time and stay the course. They cannot
continue to smash the price to floor and make the money they need to stay
afloat. Mergers cost money, network upgrades cost money, every time they
slip in cheap and press the locals out of business they win again. Spread
your streams out and stay the course. Install Dish, sell computers, offer
voip, network homes, fix computers, go onsite to fix the phones that the
phone companies charge to much for, install cable, etc... shore up your
business by spreading your weight out and when the ice gets thin from DSL
you won't fall through the ice

Sorry so lengthy... but Telco stands for lack of quality and your money is
leaving town. Rural America doesn't like.

Nice words from ATT but...

I'm in Los Angeles County only 1/2 mile from the city/country line. ATT
doesn't offer DSL here - apparently they don't think there are enough
customers to justify the cost of upgrading their network. Will ATT be
required to offer DSL here? It sounds like they will according to the
terms of the ATT purchase of Bell South. I think the Los Angeles market
is at least 80% upgraded for broadband but will ATT ever REALLY offer
DSL here? I'm not holding my breath. Will there ever be any enforcement of
these merger terms? Again, I'm not holding my breath.

I don't want to seem (or feel) ungrateful because half the secret of
enjoying life is remembering to practice an attitude of gratitude. I'm
grateful that there is a WISP in the area who provides me with 256 kbps
symmetrical service for only $99.99 per month.

ATT to offer $20 'naked' DSL service

   LESLIE CAULEY, USA TODAY

Cheaper high-speed Internet service is coming.

Within a few months, ATT is expected to start charging $19.95 a month
for naked DSL, meaning you don't have to buy any other ATT service,
including phone, to get that rate. It currently charges $45 for a
stand-alone broadband subscription.

ATT also is developing $10 DSL for new subscribers who also buy
ATT-branded phone service.

ATT plans to offer both services for at least 30 months. The clock
starts as soon as the media giant starts selling them in any of the 22
states where it is the incumbent local phone company, including
California, Florida, Illinois and Texas.

Why so cheap? Three words: Federal Communications Commission.

The FCC, which has broad regulatory control over the U.S.
telecommunications industry, recently approved ATT's acquisition of
BellSouth. To get needed votes from the FCC's two Democratic members,
ATT agreed, reluctantly, to offer these DSL bargains.

ATT is required to roll out the $19.95 offer within one year and the $10
rate within six months. Gene Kimmelman, public policy director of
Consumers Union, says he expects ATT to move faster.

Under the terms of the FCC agreement, ATT is required to offer naked DSL
for $19.95 in markets that are at least 80 percent upgraded for
broadband. That describes many of ATT's biggest markets, says Kimmelman,
who helped negotiate the settlement.

Under the deal, ATT's cheap DSL products will clock in at 768 kilobits
per second. While that's slower than the 1.5 megabits to 3 megabits
popular with many U.S. consumers, it's more than good enough for
Internet telephony, Kimmelman says.

As such, he thinks the twin offers

[WISPA] Back bone

2006-03-08 Thread Ross Cornett

Gentlemen and Ladies,

Just curious if anyone outside the major mets have
a back bone of DS3 either partial or full and what they are paying for
them. I have been quoted $12000 per month for mine from ATT who has
to lease lines from IL Consolidated. and I don't see now that is a
workable figure in the wireless world. Any help would be
appreciated.

[WISPA] Farmers Wanting full Farm Coverage

2006-02-04 Thread Ross Cornett

Hey guys,

I have a farmer that wants farm coverage with
little or no trouble. He wants to browse from his tractor while the
satelite guides his tractor for him. I am putting out 2.4 from his
Elevator leg, and I believe with an omni he can get signal, is there a better
way to do this?

Please any ideas would be appreciated.
