[WISPA] ISPCON Coming Up soon
ISPCON http://www.ispcon.com/ will be at San Jose on Nov. 11 and 12th. The WISPA reception will be at 6:30 on Tuesday evening, Nov. 11th. We would like to get an idea how many WISPs and Vendors will be attending for catering estimations and other logistical scheduling. If you plan to go to ISPCON, please speak up or email me offlist. We are looking for WISPA members to volunteer to work in the WISPA booth of 2 hour shifts on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. If you are willing to volunteer some time, we would appreciate it. It is a great way to meet a lot of other WISPs and vendors in a comfortable manner. RSVP if you are willing to help. Thank you, Rick Harnish WISPA Wants You! Re: [WISPA] ISPCON
I agree with Chuck - - the ability to sit down and converse with others in the industry is worth the $700.00 alone. I learn more from sitting and talking with other operators than anything else. The sharing of ideas (and drinks) of the way others do things has been a great investment of time for us. The class room time is great too and I know we will have some really good sessions at this ISPCON. There are experienced and knowledgeable people slated to speak who I really respect - - I look forward to the trip! Re: [WISPA] ISPCON
Chuck, I really think ISPCON should focus their shows in more centrally located venues. San Jose did not have the best attendance because of the location and expense to get there for much of the population in the country. I would think Denver, Chicago, Atlanta, Dallas and St. Louis would make much more sense for the maximum benefit of attendees. I did notice that your booth was tucked way in the back of the vendor hall last fall. It was definitely not in a high traffic area. I kind of felt sorry for any of the vendors on that back row. I'm sorry you had such a bad experience with ISPCON. The show was excellent for WISPA but our booth was in a better position than yours was, and I want to publicly thank Wireless Beehive (http://www.wbmfg.com/Home) for becoming a vendor member of WISPA at that show! I do agree that ISPCON is not even close to 10 years ago, and most likely never will be again. Of course, our companies aren't worth 6-20x earnings now either. It’s a sign of the times, not necessarily a sign of a bad show. I personally look forward to going to ISPCON in Chicago, to meet new people, converse with my friends in the industry and enlighten my knowledge base. With all that said, I'm only 150 miles from Chicago, so my travel expenses won't be too great. [WISPA] ISPCON Notes
WISPA held its biannual reception at ISPCON last night. Attendance was fabulous with a crowd that reached overcapacity for the room we had reserved. We want to thank all members, potential members and vendors who came to the reception and shared this time with us. The highlight of the evening was the announcement of the WISPA Outstanding WISP Operator of the Year Award. President Matt Larsen made this presentation following an outstanding speech about WISPA, our accomplishments and our goals for the future. This year’s winner was Travis Johnson of IDA.Net. Travis received a very nice plaque for his accomplishments of serving around 4000 clients in the rough terrain of Idaho. Our sincere congratulations go out to Travis, his staff and his family. Great Job! We also want to thank Imagestream and Powercode for sponsoring the reception. Without vendor support, many events such as this would not be possible. RE: [WISPA] ISPCON Notes
Rick, Don't forget the late entry of a full BreezeNET B100 link that went to WISPER Wireless Internet in Belleville, IL by the draw of Mike Delp's card. That thing lists for $7,990. Thanks for allowing Alvarion to donate the link to the raffle at the last minute. Mike, if I see it on eBay I'll break your legs! :) Matt Larson has one up now and he told me last night the link is over 30 miles and it is pulling over 20 mbps without blinking and that it has been true set-and-forget. Rudy, Jeff, George, Mac, J.C., Matt, Jack, Rick, Dave, et all...it was great to see you last night. The reception was absolutely packed. Nice job and thanks to Powercode and ImageStream for stepping up to sponsor it. Attendance was fabulous with a crowd that reached overcapacity for the room we had reserved. Re: [WISPA] ISPCON Notes
Stating that the crowd was overcapacity is an understatement. There was standing room only both in the room and outside in the hallway. Further, many people didn't stay because there was no room. Additionally, the folks who put together the booth and arranged for WISP Member ribbons on our badges did an awesome job. The booth made it clear what WISP was about and the benefits of joining. The messaging was right on and I think the public perception generated by this event is going to be tremendous. -Matt WISPA held its biannual reception at ISPCON last night. Re: [WISPA] ISPCON
Peter, Unfortuneately, I missed all but two sessions. Darn management duties, can't escape them even in FL :-( Its was a shame because their was a great line up of sessions on the dockett, good business and marking type stuff, such as yours. What I liked best was the Luncheon Topic Tables. Not much beats sitting head to head with a group of smart people on a common topic of interest. The big WOW for me was the knowledge learned from other attendees. It was interesting to hear what they found interesting. Its neat to watch the evolution. Guys I may have helped two or three years ago, now with more experience under their belt than then, bringing back new insight from their perspective. Everyone has something of value to offer and something to learn. So my point is, the WOW may not be a Product or a Topic, but People in general. From a product perspective, there were a couple of neat new products. I really liked the Remote Backup Software provider, where the model is, you sell the software to the client, and then the ISP Server software is free, and ISPs can host the Backup Storage on their own network and own servers for better controlled costs. The software paid attention to compression best practices to use the least possible amount of bandwidth, and used the processing power of the end user's PC to do it. My mind is drawing a blank on the Company Name, at the moment. A couple neat VOIP SoftSwitch and Hard Switch products on display. The truth is, I'm not sure I came back with any really big WOWs. I had a whole bunch of little WOWs. :-) But that could be because I missed most of the sessions. The CEO session of course is always great, but don't think appropriate to discuss those topics on an open list, so no comment on specifics. Show was a great success, for me. Peter, Did you get a WOW? Sam, Poolside, where? (What hotel are you at? Matt, where are you?) AT Pointe Orlando that sounds like Adobe's, which I was recently told is not that nice. I'm at the Best Western just up the street (I think Google put it .8 miles from the Rosen, still stumblin' distance). No clue if it has a pool, I'm a nerd and a business owner, I'll probably be in my room with the curtains closed staring at an LCD trying to figure out what is causing interference on a backhaul 1200 miles away ;) Yeah, Adobe's was the place. My flight lands at 12:45 so I'll probably be checked in around 2:00. I'll see what I can scope out in the afternoon. Are there any Vendor Members who might want to sponsor our meeting at ISPCON? Alvarion and Electrocomm sponsored the last one. Re: [WISPA] ISPCON Orlando May 23-25
I'd take it one step further... Protocols to optimize QOS on Transit routing. Is BGP good enough anymore? What options are there to do the equivellent of OSLR for Transit and peering. For example, what merit is there to Internap's smart routing theories? What options exist for WISPs? There is a big gap now between routing decissions one may want to make for their internal on-net wireless transport network and there National transit and peering connections. WISPs are growing beyond the little provider feedingtheir networks with two local T1 providers. Do you make decisions to shorten on-net hops, or off-net hops to destinations? And is number of hops relevent anymore? I'd argue QOS, capacity, and dollar cost are so much more relevent now a days. Re: [WISPA] ISPCON Spring 2007
Yeah, it was pretty disappointing. We ran out of food but had beer left over. How sick is that? hehehehehe The meeting was great. Heck, the show was great. There are more new things happening right now than I ever remember seeing. MissingKids.org has got some exciting things going on. Trend Micro and Check Point are either doing or looking at offering a nice wholesale program for the average operator. I found a couple of VOIP companies that are offering Vonage type services that the ISP can private label! Turn key * systems were there. And I saw a really cool off site backup program that not only sent your data off site, it also split it up over several servers. Pretty cool stuff. If only I could have hit the other half of the show floor! RE: [WISPA] ISPCON Spring 2007
30 + was good, 50 would be better but there should be 100's of us there to make an impact in this industry. We held the first Indiana WISPA meeting on September 8, 2006 and had 63 people there representing 24 wireless providers across Indiana. We are planning the next meeting for December 8, 2006 and expect to see 30+ wireless companies represented. It was open to ANY WISP that participates on the Indiana WISPA listserv and we did NO other advertising about it. If you want to make a difference, we need to participate with WISPA and each other and begin to coordinate efforts instead of sitting back letting things happen. The first meeting was a simple let's start talking and organizing meeting. The next meeting will be with vendors there to make presentations to us. As an industry, we need to organize ourselves in each state and have 100's of us there at ISPCON in Orlando. Anybody else up for the challenge?
