RE: [WISPA] Want a bucket truck?
JohhnyO, You are correct. A lot of states used to have chauffers licenses, but now the CDL (starting in mid 80's) specified weight limits. The only exemption is government vehicles (like fire trucks). It was the way to grandfather all the volunteer firemen. Who needs a commercial driver's license (CDL)? You need to earn your CDL if you intend to: * Operate any vehicle weighing 26,001 pounds or more. * Tow a trailer or other vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 10,001 pounds or more with a gross combination weight rating (GCWR) of all vehicles of 26,001 pounds or more. * Operate any vehicle designed to transport 16 or more people (including the driver). * Operate any vehicle carrying hazardous materials in amounts requiring placards. Are there CDL exemptions? Yes. You won't need a Michigan CDL if: * You're on active duty in the military―or in the National Guard―and are operating military vehicles with military licenses. * You're a police officer or firefighter and are operating emergency vehicles. * You're a farm worker operating a farm vehicle within a 150-mile radius of your farm. (You will need an "F" endorsement on your regular operator license if you're driving a combination vehicle whose towing vehicle weighs more than 26,000 pounds.) * You are driving your own motor home. >From http://www.dmv.org/mi-michigan/cdl-faqs.php Mike No virus found in this outgoing message. Blair - you need to re-check on these state laws.. Anything over 26,000 Gross weight capable vehicle requires a CDL ! This is nationwide - atleast this is what the state troopers who have stopped us have told us on numerous occassions... For Hire or Not - weight limits are weight limits. Re: [WISPA] Want a bucket truck?
WE have 2 trucks for installs and signal checks. The 1st we bought 2 years ago and it is a large step van with a boom bucket on top. Kind of looks like a bread truck with half the front windshield cut away for the bucket. It has a reach of 44 feet from the ground. The 2nd truck we bought about 6 weeks ago. It is a large flat bed truck with an 80 ft boom crane/bucket on it. This is the ones you see sign companies use to hang signs. 80 feet is a long way up. It weighs in at approx 24 k lbs and does not need a special class drivers license. Look around and you can find some pretty good deals out there. Tim - Original Message - From: "Michael J. RE: [WISPA] Want a bucket truck?
Yes we paid for the rebuild and they certified it like all of their rebuilds. We spent around $19K for the refurb. We will not use it for any firefighting duties, but it is nice to know that the structure is sound. They work on all aerial platforms in the St. Louis Metro area, and are factory reps for most of the apparatus manufacturers. We will not re-certify it, as we do not need NFPA standards for a portable tower, so it would be better to say it "meets standards", and not it is "certified". It does not have a pump, but it has plumbing to the top of the ladder. (2-1/2 or 3") The turret does not work anymore, but we only use it for vertical real estate. And a good idea it is that you gave us, Mike... Understand that as a former (11 year) firefighter, I LOVE old fire engines. Anything that anyone or any WISP can do to keep them alive is a wonderful thing. Speaking of wonderful things, get a look at some of these... http://www.clafma.org/collection1a.html http://www.clafma.org/collection1b.html http://www.clafma.org/collection1c.html There's no way I can get enough of them. jack Michael Erskine wrote: What do you want from me?
