Cisco WLC 5508 software recommendations

2021-09-07 Thread Entwistle, Bruce
We are looking to upgrade our pair of 5508 controllers from the current
version, 8.5.151.0. We cannot move beyond the 8.5 code as we are still using
some older 3500 access points. I have seen many comments regarding versions of
code to avoid, but was looking to see what versions the group has found to be
stable and would recommend moving to.

Weak Security

2020-12-01 Thread Entwistle, Bruce
Apple devices that are updating to IOS 14 are now reporting that wireless
security is weak. We are currently using a combination of WPA/TKIP and
WPA2/AES for security, but are considering the move to WPA2/AES only. I was
looking to see what others have done and what challenges you faced in making
these changes.

I have been working on getting the first one of these connected to our wireless

Hi everyone,

I was wondering how you're managing actually joining Sonos products to your
network. If you've had the pleasure of setting some of these up you may know
why I need to ask.

They don't really like to individually be directed to join a network and they
don't really have a UI that just lets you log in a manage a units network
connection.

The best I've come up with is a kind of convoluted process that requires
setting them up wired first and then directing the set you want to manage with
a given (newly required) user account to join the network at the same time.

I think there's also differences between product lines. So far my experience is
with Play:1's, Play:5's, and Connects which our process works with.

Thanks,

RE: [WIRELESS-LAN] Wireless Only in Student Housing?

Last year we converted our first residence hall to wireless only and there were
minimal challenges. You could consider installing the small hospitality APs
in the rooms and then there would be wired ports available if necessary.

Hi All,

I’m curious to know the size of your spare gear inventories. Do you keep a
percentage of each model of AP in inventory, and what is your reasoning?
Storms? Last minute/emergency wireless coverage needs?

What percentage of your live gear do you keep as offline inventory? (100 live
APs with 1 inventory AP = 1% offline inventory).

With Xirrus, we had an offline inventory of more than 10% of live inventory. We
kept that inventory to cover the high failure rate of the equipment, the
incidence of hurricanes and lightning strikes in our area, the broad range of
AP models on campus, and last minute large events in low coverage areas.

We are evaluating the minimum offline inventory for our new Aruba gear as we
finish up the vendor switch. I have been thinking 1-2%, but I want to see what
you guys do first, and why.

Subject: [WIRELESS-LAN] Another Cisco WLC Code Thread

Happy Holidays,

Like many others I'm sure, I've been studying all of the email threads from
this list to see if anyone has settled on any of the current code releases on
their controllers. With all of the bugs disabling several AP models, we have
been holding off our code upgrade and wireless migration.

I have a plan to move about half of our wireless APs off of a pair of WiSM2s to
our new 8540's next week. We've had the 8540's up since the summer running on
8.4.100.0 seemingly without many issues. It's been pretty stable but there has
only been about 80 APs on it for our Fall semester. That code release is now
deferred and we've looked at going up to 8.5.110.0 which released just a few
days ago. Release notes list the open caveats, and there are several that still
impact the 3500/3600/3700 lines pretty hard. 8.6.101.0 released a day after,
and its even more grim.

Has anyone found anything stable? We have a pretty wide deployment of APs, but
most of them are 3500/3600/3700s with a fleet of 702W/1810W in residences. We
simply don't have the manpower to run around and console into APs that lose
their marbles, and our time slot to move forward is narrowing by the day.

And more importantly, I would like to sleep better over the holidays, like we
all would I'm sure.

Thanks for the input,
Britton

Here's ours:

2 8540s in HA mode (bought with the idea of replacing all WiSM2s)
4 pairs of WiSM2s in HA mode
3 server ClearPass cluster for both eduroam and guest
Main SSID: eduroam with PEAP/MSCHAP
Mix of WAPs; 3500, 3600, 3700, 2800, 1810w
Total number of WAPs: 3500
21000 peak users

We tested the 8540s extensively over the spring and summer, primarily with the
8.2.151 code and a mix of 2800s and 1810ws. We had AVC turned on, and were
using RLANs for the wired ports. The largest number of WAPs we had on this pair
was 469. We tested code 8.2.160 towards the end of the summer with all WAPs on
the 8540s, and had no issues. First the day of classes, we had all WiSM2s
running 8.2.160 simply as a backup. Early morning we started getting reports of
802.1X authentication failures (these failures had nothing to do with
ClearPass). Shortly after that, WAPs starting flapping (disconnecting from the
8540s moving to WiSM2s and then moving back again). We tried playing with the
TCP MSS setting, adjusting EAP timers, turning AVC off and multiple other
things, but nothing worked. In the end, we downgraded the WiSM2s to 8.0.140 and
moved all WAPs that were not 2800 or 1810s. The 8540s were downgraded to
8.2.151 so the 2800s and 1810s would have a controller to connect to. Network
stability was restored after this.

Needless to say it was a very unpleasant experience. We are still working with
Cisco to find out the root cause of the problem.

back-to-school?

On this end, we are doing OK halfway to our expected total daily peak clients
(we're at 15K now high water mark).

Our significant WLAN-related changes since end of Spring semester
* Running 8.2.151 on our 8540s
* Significant quantities of Wave 2 APs
* ISE as RADIUS (only, no NAC, no onboarding)

No changes to:
* our guest WLAN (Clearpass/an Aruba controller pair)
* onboarding (Cloudpath Wiz)
* overall topology
* open network in dorms for gadgets
* non-use of AVC, it crapped out and never got solved after hundreds of
hours with TAC

Fears:
* We haven't yet hit the scale that will reveal problems with any of
the newer stuff listed above

Anyone else care to share?

Short answer is it is a bug. A "Kernel Panic". AP loses its mind.Very
prevalent on the new stuff, to a much lesser degree affects "older" stuff.

Sometimes the reset fixes it. Sometimes not. We doubled down on 1810's and
2802's. Bugs galore. Which are actively being fixed-to be fair.

We are running on engineering code and HUGE improvements have been made. Soon,
I think/hope, it will be rock solid.

We are currently running a handful of 5508s with 8.0.133.0 and have been stable
for some time with around 400 APs and upwards of 1.5k clients. We also run a
half dozen 5520s with 8.2.141.0 and they have been running solid with around 1k
APs each and upwards of 10k clients. We do not however run anything but 2600,
3600, 2700 and 3700 APs.

The only issue I have seen that I don't understand well yet is related to some
APs losing the minds during network interruptions. The APs will appear up from
CDP neighbor information, but will have lost their name and will not connect to
their configured primary or secondary controllers. A power cycle will often
recover the AP, but not always. I believe that issue started with 8.2.

Thank you.

2017-03-10 Thread Entwistle, Bruce
We are currently running version 8.0.133.0 on our Cisco 5508 controllers, as
our current access points are primarily 3500s and 3600s. However we have
recently purchased a batch of 2802i access points whose minimum supported
version is 8.2.110.0. I was looking to the group for their recommendations on
a stable version of code which will support our new 2802i access points.

RE: Disabling LEDs on APs

2016-09-06 Thread Entwistle, Bruce
After going through several rooms and finding tape, post-it notes and other
similar things on the APs covering the LEDs we went ahead and disabled the LEDs
on all residence hall APs. No problems, except for the occasional time you
forget where you are and look up and think the AP is down because there is no
LED indicator.

First-world problems... Curious if others have gone down this road in Residence
Halls. We're not really being asked to, but are considering wholesale disabling
LEDs on our Cisco APs in the dorms as a quality of life step. Has this caused
anyone any pain when it comes to not being able to see the colors on the AP as
status indication? Have you actually had requests to disable the LEDs? Overall
experience with accommodating or denying the request?

RE: [WIRELESS-LAN] Cisco interface groups

We have used interface groups since the initial installation of our 5508
controllers and they have worked well. One issue we did have was an older
application required clients to be on the same subnet and would fail when
clients were distributed across the VLANs in the interface group.

We are in the process of moving from a controllerless vendor to Aruba. Our
current design is very segmented, to keep wireless device broadcasts from
overwhelming the network and AP's (we had this problem back in 11g days).
Presently, we've limited segments to /23's (give or take). In your
controller-based environments, how large have you let these segments go? Is a
/21, /20 ... viable?

As our campus rapidly changes and grows, we began placing office spaces in our
offsite residential housing. Initially, we built out a large two story office
area that has a fixed connection back to our main campus. Networking within the
same building was simple as we did this during the renovation.

With our growth, the administration is now planning on throwing together
another Ad Hoc office space in a separate building. This building is relatively
close to our main office space (+-50 feet), however we have no cabling between
buildings and no conduits in place. I'm interested in testing out a low
latency line of site wireless bridge, one that I could utilize to distribute to
multiple buildings as our growth continues, across up to 1000 feet and from
100-1000mbps speeds.

Can you share what vendors you've had success with? Engenius, Ubiquiti, etc.,
come to mind initially.

I came from the corporate world a couple of years ago, and there is a similar
need in business. We sometimes just had to say “no” because sometimes just a
temp/quick thing violates policy that may be tied to law (security policies
related to Sarbanes Oxley, for example). Or, depending on who you asked, you
went out of your way to set up a laptop with the printer directly connected and
acting as a temporary print server (not proud of it, but when a CxO asks, you
jump).

If this was a common need in business, then I would expect someone like HP to
build it in. I suspect however, that this is one of those edge-cases where
EDU's act differently than business, but use business features with 1.x.

On your open network, couldn't you use Cisco's built-in device profiling/policy
classification to drop it into a different vlan (no need for radius) and avoid
routing tricks? You could drop it into the same network as .1x.

Again, if this is just a temp/quick thing - popping up a PSK WLAN on a couple
of AP's using an AP Group (in Cisco terms) is two minutes of work. Far less
time then trying to convince HP (or others) to add .1x support.

Depends on your topology. We don’t have or want a PSK WLAN, and don’t want to

it. We don’t do RADIUS attributes either to drop into different VLANs. All
environments aren’t the same and .1X support for business devices in business
settings seems appropriate.

Lee,

I'm curious about the need to be on 1.x. Is there something compelling that
can't be accomplished using PSK, or even an open network that 1.x can? If the
printer supports IPPS or other SSL/TLS encrypted communication channel, then
does 1.x matter especially in a temp/quick situation?

Just my quick thought would be to drop it into a open, wep, or psk, and if
required, use device profiling/policy classification to drop into desired VLAN.

If the cost of an outlet was more than the cost of a decent printer it'd be an

2014-08-27 Thread Entwistle, Bruce
I experienced a similar situation on an older version of code. Contacted Cisco
and they had me move the problem APs to a second VLAN that we have for AP
installation as they suspected a problem with the VLAN. After moving several
APs to the second VLAN the problem was gone and never appeared again, and did
not migrate with the problem APs, which still reside on that second network.

Lee, sounds like you're hitting this hardware issue:
https://supportforums.cisco.com/document/105346/calibration-fix-1260-3500-series-aps-csctu24972-cscty68030

I had a few 3500s go all rebooty on me, I've been able to get them all back in
line. If you can't, there is always the LLHW:

My question is coming from the code side- has anyone been through this sort of

APs get good DHCP, find controller, settle in, start serving clients.
Randomly and frequently, AP will either jump to another controller or fall off
totally and eventually reboot.
Condition repeats.

Just looking for ideas from code side, if it’s ringing any bells.

Gaming consoles/streaming devices

2013-09-17 Thread Entwistle, Bruce
I know this topic has been discussed before but the start of the new school
year has restarted our conversation on this topic. What I am referring to is
what schools are doing to accommodate students in connecting their
entertainment devices (game consoles, media streaming players, etc) to the
campus wireless network along with managing the traffic associated with these
devices. We are considering different options for authentication; periodically
changed static key, MAC address registration, along with using our PacketShaper
to manage the traffic, but are looking to see what other campuses have done and
the challenges they encountered.

Apple produccts in a multi-vendor environment

2013-05-06 Thread Entwistle, Bruce
We are currently installing some Aruba APs on our campus which has been fully
covered by a Cisco wireless network. Both systems are controller based
installations, Cisco 5508 Aruba 7210, and both authenticate users against our
Cisco ACS server. Both wireless systems are broadcasting the same SSSIDs to
provide a common experience for the users. We have run into a situation where
all devices connect to both networks without user intervention, except for
Apple devices, which request the users accept the certificate from our ACS
server. We have run tests using the same device and user ID on both network,
but each time the apple device connects to the Aruba network the user is
prompted to accept the certificate. We are trying to install the second system
without having the users notice any changes. Has anyone had a similar
experience they are willing to share.

RE: [WIRELESS-LAN] Multi vendor interoperability on Campus

2013-05-01 Thread Entwistle, Bruce
We are currently in the process of installing a second vendors wireless
hardware on campus, current Cisco installing Aruba, using the same SSID on all
APs. Both systems authenticate against the same ACS server. In our pilot
deployment, windows PCs seemed to connected to either network with no
intervention, however our Apple products ask to accept the certificate from our
ACS server. Once accepted the Apple devices roam between systems.

Has anyone had a similar experience and found a solution which did not include
any user interaction?

In our ongoing deployments switching from Cisco to Juniper, we are using the
new SSID as a way to advertise the new service and differentiate possible
wireless connectivity issues. This has been very useful for campus
communication and instructions to our help desk, but has lead to minor issues
where some non-technical management have difficulty differentiating between the

What are others doing to get interoperability when you have multiple wireless
vendors on campus? We are transitioning to a new system and trying to think of
all the issues we may run into during this.

A little background about our layout… a building will have all the same vendor
AP's but adjacent building may not, over 100 buildings on campus, total of
4000+ across campus, systems will have different ip pool space, and limited
outdoor coverage.

Ideas
1. Same ssid across both systems and let the clients choose what system.
2. Same ssid and adjust the probe/reponse thresholds so clients outside of a
building don't connect.
3. Have versions of ssids for each system so clients can choose what ssid to
connect to.

Thanks,

RE: [WIRELESS-LAN] Wireless in Residence Halls

We installed our APs in the hallways, and found that the APs were seeing such a
strong signal from each other that the Cisco controller would power down the
signal strength for the APs. This was causing a impact on coverage in the

Off-net Rogue APs

2012-10-19 Thread Entwistle, Bruce
I know there have been multiple discussions regarding how schools deal with
rogue APs connected to the campus network. However we have run into a
different situation and I was wondering how other campuses are dealing with
this. We have students who are purchasing their own internet service to their
room through the local cable company, then installing their own AP on this
network. While this does not carry the normal concerns associated with rogue
APs there is the concern about the wireless interference created. I am curious
to know what policies/procedures others have used to deal with this situation.

Wireless design

2011-06-08 Thread Entwistle, Bruce
We will soon be migrating our wireless network from Cisco autonomous 1231 APs
to a combination of Cisco 3502i along with some of the existing 1231 APs
converted to lightweight. As we prepare for this we are looking at how to
best architect the new network. The new network will cover the entire campus
which consists of approx 50 buildings, with each building having its' own VLAN.

The initial idea was to install the APs so the IP address of the AP would be a
part of the local building VLAN. This is the IP the AP would use to talk back
to the controller. For user connections there would be two VLANs created which
would be accessed through a single SSID. The users would then be dynamically
assigned to one of the two VLANs based on their logon credentials. Currently
all users are placed on the same VLAN after authentication, as our current
installation is not capable of dynamic VLAN assignment. There is currently
only a single SSID in place.

I would be interested to know what other have done and how successful it was.

Crew,
We hide our access points above ceiling grids. Our logic is the devices are out
of site and less prone to vandalism (in fact we have had zero vandalism).
One concern that has been expressed by our wireless team is the congestion
above the ceiling grid - pipes, HVAC ducting, lighting and cables. It is
logical that all of these obstructions do not help RF propagation and create
sources of interference.

My question for you guys:
Did any of you change your mounting locations from above ceiling grid to below
the grid (visible)?
Did you notice substantial signal improvement?
What is the vandalism rate?
Did your facilities/administrative folks express any concerns
about the AP visibility?
