Re: [WIRELESS-LAN] Papercut Mobility-print and Enterprise mDNS

2021-03-19 Thread Tony Skalski
We've had it running since it was released. We don't use mDNS however. The
DNS config was not quite working for the few weeks of its life, but this
was straightened out quickly and has been solid since. We run BIND on our
name servers with a zone that forwards the discovery requests to our
mobility print server. This works on all networks, wired and wireless.
Personally I have never had much luck with enterprise mDNS (I'm looking at
you AirGroup).

Re: [WIRELESS-LAN] Pod-style Residence Halls

2020-02-25 Thread Tony Skalski
Hi Chintin,

For our pod-style res halls, we have two network drops per room. We use
Aruba hospitality APs and we place them every other room and in the common
room. So if you are in a room with an AP, you still have 2 network drops
(pretty much only used by gaming rigs at this point).

Re: [WIRELESS-LAN] eduroam CAT Tool questioin

2018-05-10 Thread Tony Skalski
I would check the connection properties that get set up (by the CAT) and
verify they are correct. This sounds similar to an issue we see with
Windows 10 clients connecting to older PPTP VPNs, where we have to
explicitly pick the EAP type to be used.

Re: [WIRELESS-LAN] Aruba 8.0

2018-03-12 Thread Tony Skalski
Hi Chad,

We made the move a few months back, running on new controllers in parallel
with our 6.x infrastructure. We are still running in parallel, with some
buildings with older APs on the older 6.x code and controllers.

This worked well for us, and having gone through it, would recommend it. I
have no experience with their upgrade process

We started fresh, pretty much mirroring our 6.x config on the new
controllers. IIRC, we wiped and re-started from the beginning at least 2-3
times as we went. The new managed device structure takes some getting used
to, and you'll need to make sure you know how to look at the received
config at the controller level. There were a few things that seemed to
either work in the CLI and not in the UI, or vice versa, but we never found
anything we couldn't work around. We have a few cases open on minor issues,
and one AP reboot issue. It is still a fairly new code base.

I would engage your local SE and get their assistance. Once we had a basic
config working, ours came down to review it.

Re: [WIRELESS-LAN] Poll - Campus Open Guest Wireless

2017-11-15 Thread Tony Skalski
We went from self-registration to captive portal (click to accept AUP), and
a year and a half ago to an open guest wifi with no captive portal and no
registration. We and our customers couldn't be happier with it (and we're
not worried about how much it is used).

Re: [WIRELESS-LAN] SSID names

2017-02-22 Thread Tony Skalski
>how do you stop roaming mobile devices from sucking up all your dhcp
addresses?

Devices always get the same IP address (until we change the VLAN
assignments for the AP group (i.e. vap profile in Aruba-speak)). Granted,
Aruba's VALN-assignment hashing algorithm is not perfect and once in a
while one of the /24s assigned to the guest SSID exceeds 80% used (our
alerting threshold), but that has only happened a few times since school
started in September. I do have in my back pocket a plan to flatten these
/24s into one larger network if need be, given that Aruba has sufficient
controls to deal with {broad, multi}cast traffic.

Re: [WIRELESS-LAN] edroam as main 802.1x ssid

2016-11-11 Thread Tony Skalski
We moved to just eduroam and a guest SSID this fall. We used the eduroam
CAT tools to get users onboard and those have worked well. And when a few
users with new Google Pixels (Android 7.1) could not use the CAT tool, the
issue was corrected within 2 days.

Re: [WIRELESS-LAN] About the Guest wireless network and account

2016-09-08 Thread Tony Skalski
Prior to this year, we had open guest SSID with a captive portal where
users had to accept an AUP every 8 hours. This year we removed the captive
portal and merged it with another SSID that was used for consoles and other
devices that do not support 802.1x. The new guest SSID is open and
effectively outside our firewall.

Re: [WIRELESS-LAN] Res hall wireless printing..

2016-09-01 Thread Tony Skalski
Is the issue getting them onto your wireless network, or to stop them from
broadcasting their own SSIDs?

We try (by providing ~75 follow-me release stations around campus) to get
them to use our infrastructure. We tell them not to bring printers. We see
their SSIDs in the res, but to date, we haven't spent much time making them
turn them off. We trust that they are low power transmitters and that they
are only disruptive at short distances. If someone complains about poor
performance in the area, and we can see evidence of interference, we will
use it to encourage the student to turn off the wireless on their printer.

We have no interest in getting them on our network.

Re: [WIRELESS-LAN] How big are your wireless segments?

2016-07-25 Thread Tony Skalski
We have about 50 /24s. The Aruba controllers hash the MAC address and drop
users into one of the /24s. We are at about 5,000 daily users.

We have broadcasts and multicasts turned off for these wireless nets. We
don't use VLAN pools.

Re: [WIRELESS-LAN] 802.11k and 802.11r in BYOD

We've had 802.11k enabled for a few years. The only issue we've had was
with some Intel wireless chipsets. To work around this we disabled the
Quiet Information Element which appears in beacons and probes as part of
802.11k. If you search for Intel and Quiet Information Element you can find
lots more info.

We've never enabled 802.11r, because it is not supported by OS X. It is
supported on iOS but not sure about other OSes.

Environment: about 5,000 daily associations, close to 4,000 of which are
BYOD.

Re: [WIRELESS-LAN] Looking for interest among Wi-Fi professionals

I would much prefer a mailing list, but would use it regardless.

Looking for interest on whether those on the list would get value out of a
potential new wireless-oriented discussion board, as described here:

Won’t hurt my feelings either way, but could be kind of valuable if you
 picture it widely used.

I'm also disappointed that the wireless vendors have been quiet on this
issue as well. Where is Cisco, Aruba, Rukus, et. al who provide us with
these tools? One reading of the FCC notice is that the product they market
and sell is illegal. I feel they should be leading the charge with the FCC
for clarification for us, their customers.

I think a good chunk of the use is even more insidious than that. I've
 been
in a position where I've offered university guests access to our wifi. A
number of these users - smart, highly technical IT professionals -
 instead
just said Nah, I'll just use my hotspot.

I suspect it's a combination of two things. First, I paid for it, so I
 have
to use it to get my money's worth. Second, I'd have to think about how
 to
set up a new wifi, or I can just turn on my hotspot by rote memory.

In both cases, the cost (or lack thereof) and quality of any host offered
 wifi
doesn't even factor into the decision at all.

 that the hotel was
jamming mobile hotspots so you can’t use them in the convention space.

Is this a distinction between them blocking in their conference
facilities vs. their hotel rooms? We all know that radio signal
propagation is not so clean cut, but I'm wondering if the lawyers are
 seeing things differently.

I just saw this on CNN and jumped on the list to post. Using your own AP
is against the AUP everyone signs at our institution. Now I wonder if that
 clause is invalid.
