Personally I wouldn't trust the standalone versions to be accurate for
anything. I have a Virtual PC image with Windows 98 SE and IE
5.00.2614.3500 and Windows 2000 with IE 5.50.4134.0600 - but no 5.01,

I don't have a test machine with IE 5 loaded, but again, given that I am

The "fix" I came up with is good enough, but if someone has a full

Well, I don't know if it will help, but I use Shaun Inman's Shortstat

You need to have PHP on the server.

On some sites where I have no server log access, I use Nedstats
(http://www.nedstatbasic.net/service/) with my own rewritten version
of their code. Validates ok and gives reasonable info. It does require
a little graphic, though.

Ultimately, real server log stats will always be better :)

try Rogers other flexible box method [1]... I quickly tried it with
you image and got the top corners working OK. I don't have time to
complete an example just now but I expect the rest of it should come
along with changing the some padding and margins.

The trick is to make sure your 'inner content' is clear from the
gradient of your graphics.

As Bert Doorn rightly pointed out off list, though, older, non DOM

D'oh! Blame it on the fact that I don't actually use this type of

an exercise in "DOMification", if nothing else, as the end result may
not give the expected results the same way the old, kludgey script does.

I use the same eXtreme tracker on my own site. I made some

Main things were the & issue, escaping forward-slashes,
adding alt attributes to the images and putting the noscript

See site in sig (towards the end of the xhtml source).

Server Logs.
IIS is configured to produce logs by default, not sure about Apache. Any
questions? Raise it with your host... Most are capable of providing raw
logfiles.

They have the advantage of providing EVERYTHING those trackers did, plus
loads more besides But depending on how your server is configured,
of course.

This is with no zoom, my normal 22px default:
http://members.ij.net/mrmazda/tmp/Images/turner1.png

This is at 145% zoom:
http://members.ij.net/mrmazda/tmp/Images/turner2.png
This is at 150% zoom:
http://members.ij.net/mrmazda/tmp/Images/turner3.png

The last two are so different yet so similar because they specify the
worst possible font on my system, helvetica, a bitmapped font, and no
valid alternates. With any scalable font I could have reached my default
size for the main content (#homecols dd) at around 135% or 140%. Plus,
they're using em for line-height instead of number, eliminating
line-spacing at zoom.

Looks to me like a typical tables-based layout made without tables.

[WSG] Site Tracking and Validation

2005-01-10 Thread Lori Leach
Hi those who are smarter than I,

I want to put a "hit tracker" on my site -- well actually, I already have
one. I have been using Extreme Tracker to keep up with stats.
However, a few weeks ago, when I posted something up here, a few of you went
to my site, validated my code and it was a mess -- this was due to the ET
code.

It has been removed, and I tried to do it as a .js include -- now the page
validates, but the tracker is not working.

SO, question... is there a tracker that I can use that will still allow my
page to validate?

Thanks!

It doesn't come anywhere close to a "crumble" in my IE at default
settings or when zoomed to the max. In Firefox (default 16px font size)
I *can* break it, but it zooms up four times without it becoming an
issue-that's pretty good. Even at font size set to 22px in Firefox and
while zoomed four times, the site is still very usable--it's not as
pretty, but I can use it. I would think we should recognize the overall
achievements before we scrutinize the details of how it could be improved.

There does, indeed, seem to be a trend towards blog looking layout...my
guess is that those types of layouts are the most usable; main content
on the left - subnav/extra info on the right.
Left Nav is s first half of 2000. ;)

Not all web standards complient websites are blog looking...these are

Set the padding or margins on the tags. ex:

Item One
Item Two

css

foo li {margin-bottom: 1em;}

I did a little more testing and things get stranger. IE 5.0.1 breaks
when I use:

  @import url("css/iqmax.css");

If I change the method to:

  @import url("css/iqmax.css");

...it works like a champ.
I suppose this will work just dandy, but I'm still baffled as to why the
previous method is causing problems. My only guess is that the problem
is tied directly to something in my markup. I've used this same method
several times recently (01), with no problems at all. Unless there is
something screwy with my syntax that I'm missing, I suppose it
will have to remain a mystery.

1) HTMLArea RC3 - pretty darned powerful. suspect support. It's been at
RC3
since the stone ages and nothing much since then. I'm also not very
sure
about the validity of the output code since changing font families will
churn out tags by default (didn't try to explore changing this
as I
moved to FCKEditor by then). Not easy to set up either.
2) FCKEditor - my choice right now. Support is pretty much a
single-handed
effort by the author but it's one of the most active projects on
sourceforge
right now. Visually very rich and it's one of the easiest to set up so
far.
One thing I love is the provision of plug-ins to the variety of
server-side
technologies like ASP, ASP.net, PHP etc.
3) TinyMCE - a little light on features, good to use if you're just
letting
users access to the basic stuff.
4) XStandard - commercial-ware so I didn't really evaluate it much. But
since it's supposed to be fully XHTML-compliant I guess there's
something to
be said for that.
5) http://www.intelimen.com.br/lib/editor/index.php - not evaluated yet
6) http://www.snippetmaster.com/index.php - not evaluated yet
7) http://kupu.oscom.org/ - not evaluated yet, from my first look it
seemed
really basic and slow.
8) http://sourceforge.net/projects/phpwebeditor - not evaluated yet
9) http://walter.sourceforge.net/ - not evaluated yet
One thing that you may want to watch out is whether they allow editing
of
individual table CELL attributes. No, not for more abuse of table-based
layouts but it does have its uses sometimes.

Hi Everyone,

I am looking for a lean browser based text editor which creates valid
XHTML output.

Basically I would use a normal text area, but the site I am developing
requires the ability to add hyper links, paragraphs, and change the
text style.

I want something that will automatically run (i.e. I want to avoid
having the user manually install something)...

I have looked at xstandard (http://www.xstandard.com) and I'm pretty
impressed, but I found it to be really slow to load as it might be a
bit too rich on functionality for my needs...

Just wondered if anyone has any other recommendations for a nice simple
RTE???

Cheers,

Matt

[WSG] Apology to Lea and others

2005-01-10 Thread Ian Fenn
Hello,

I received the email below from Russ.

All the other discussion groups I'm a member of allow members to openly
discuss their operation. Having accepted this as the norm, I sent an email
which was not a reply to a closed thread but the start of a discussion
regarding list policy. Given Russ's email, it would seem I have upset a few
people in doing so. Please be rest assured that no disrespect was intended
on my part. I appreciate the work that the moderators do. I was in fact just
making a comment which in my view would lead to the list becoming even more
valuable than it is now.

I'm sorry for any offence.

Ian,

You replied to a thread that has been officially closed by a core member.
This is against WSG mail list guidelines. The relevant section states:

"The list administrators reserve the right to unsubscribe any member from
the list. Reasons include: Repeatedly replying to threads that have been
closed"

Regardless of the guidelines, your comments showed a lack of respect to one
of our core members, Lea. She, like other core members help Peter and I run
the list, free of charge, trying to keep the list on focus, and generally
all they get is abuse.

If you have an issue, please do not post your comment to the list. It is
incredibly disrespectful to the core member and just adds to unnecessary
traffic. Instead, let Admin know about your concerns - offlist.

Please do not ever post to a closed thread again!

Russ

Re: ADMIN - thread closed Re: [WSG] Web Standards Developer Job

2005-01-10 Thread russ - maxdesign
Before anyone else decided to comment on a thread that has already been
closed, here are a few things you should all know about jobs and closed
threads...

1. we asked all members for opinion on job posts to the list in our recent
survey. For those who may have forgotten, the results are here:
http://webstandardsgroup.org/summary.htm

The majority of members (not by a great margin, admittedly) thought that
posts should only be made to a specialised WSG jobs list.

2. The core group discussed options for job posts at length, and eventually
came up with a compromise that we felt all members would be happy with.
As you may recall, Peter Firminger (listsdad) recently informed all members
that jobs posts would be dealt with on the site in the near future:

"We are now looking at redesigning the WSG site. This will change the look,
make the structure more semantically correct, change the way the resources
section is presented and add a new "Jobs" section for advertising (standards
related) positions vacant."

So, as you can see, jobs will be posted to the website, but not to the list
- as per the request of the majority of members.

3. Finally, the guidelines state quite clearly NOT to reply to a thread that
has been closed. In fact, repeated offences are considered an unsubscribe
offence:
"The list administrators reserve the right to unsubscribe any member from
the list. Reasons include: Repeatedly replying to threads that have been
closed"

Please, respect core members if they close a thread. They are not the enemy.
They help Peter and I run the list, free of charge, trying to keep the list
on focus, and generally all they get is abuse.

If you have an issue, please do not post your comment to the list. It is
incredibly disrespectful to the core member and just adds to unnecessary
traffic. Instead, let Admin know about your concerns - offlist.

So, finally, this thread is CLOSED!
