Re: [WSG] FeedBack Form Spam
Human-only precautions such as a CAPTHA for form entry helps, as does some anti-spam features on your web server. However, my server gets hammered with thousands of spam a day... and I got so frustrated with that sort of thing that I changed my feedback form to a text field that saved the contents into a CSV file. Bots and other spam bounced harmlessly away. However, would you believe people HAND TYPED spam into the form? Who has that kind of time on their hands? Oh... yeah... spammers. not surprising at all ... I suspect that some of the bigger spammers are using sweatshop slave labour to sign up lots of yahoo/hotmail/gmail/etc email addresses to use to receive and process verification emails for bots that can actually sign up as users on websites. I see lots of bots trying to register on anything that looks at all like a user registration form and have to keep coming up with new tricks to keep them out. (eg bot trap fields, passing id's across forms, javascript tricks, heuristics, etc). I hate captchas and have so far avoided using them. (btw I've even seen spam posts advertising capcha services! - very sus ... ) IMPORTANT: - if a form causes email to be sent (like a site contact form) MAKE SURE that your script strips newlines from any fields that end up in the mail header. If newline chars are not stripped it can be very easy for a spammer to inject extra bcc headers and use it to send email spam to long lists of email addresses. (this is very common - I've seen lots of badly-written form-to-email scripts abused this way over the years and if asked to check on a website reported to be sending email spam it is one of the first things I look for!) *** List Guidelines: http://webstandardsgroup.org/mail/guidelines.cfm Unsubscribe: http://webstandardsgroup.org/join/unsubscribe.cfm Help: [EMAIL PROTECTED] ***

Re: [WSG] Feedback
I won't do a whole report card, but here's three things that should be changed: 1. The navigation list: * li* img src=images/bullet.gif alt=Omaha Home /* /li You are doing this to put bullets between the list items. Don't do this, here's the alternative: #menu li { padding-bottom:1em; background: url(images/bullet.gif) bottom center no-repeat; } That will make the list half as long, take out all those ugly img tags, and it will look the same. 2. The links on the find a home and sell your home pages are too light. I can barely see them, and they don't stand out at all, which is also detrimental to your clients marketing. The links should be more obvious than the text, so making them darker, or a different color, would be better. 3. The xhtml and css buttons on the right are pointless... nobody looking for a home is going to care how the site was built, and the buttons look tacky. Just keep the links on the bottom, those are fine, and take the buttons out. Re: [WSG] Feedback www.mcguireomaha.com
First thing I would say is that it's too difficult to find how to FIND a home. First you have to see the small link on the right, then the page refreshes and looks virtually the same. One would expect to see a search form immediately, but instead I had to scroll down and hunt for a text link to a search page. Too much work. Design crituque wise: Make it center rather than oddly positioned. make the grey text darker, remember people of the older generation are more likely to be reading it and thus may have eyes that are statring to fail. is that blue on red? thats really wrong.. stick with a light light pink or a white font. RE: [WSG] Feedback on a new website developed very quickly
Using IE 6.0 and resolution on Windows at 1024 X 768, I get a horizontal scroll bar on Help Overseas, Help in Australia, Overseas Aid, and Tsunami Information. Hope this helps. Mary Ann -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of Anura Samara Sent: Friday, December 31, 2004 9:20 PM To: wsg@webstandardsgroup.org Subject: [WSG] Feedback on a new website developed very quickly I'd be really grateful for some feedback from you all on a new site I've had to develop very, very quickly. The website is TsunamiAssist - http://www.tsunamiassist.gov.au. It is meant to give an overall view of the Government's response to the tsunami disaster, with links to other sites with more information. I developed this site extremely quickly - basically overnight, with some extra time devoted to our people checking the content which was basically written by me too! I have only checked it out on IE5.5 and Firefox, the only two browsers on my laptop. The XHTML and CSS validates, and it seems to do OK in some accessibility checking tools I used. Because I had to work so fast, I didn't have any time to hunt out my normal resources - books, etc - and I know I failed at some things and can't for the life of me remember how to do them. They include: 1. How do you get IE to handle font sizes in tables properly? I have set the font-size in the BODY to 76% but of course IE renders the text in any subsequent TDs back up to 100%. I know this can be fixed but don't want to resort to a hack. 2. I have run into a problem with 100% width DIVs inside other DIVs. Depending on which way I code it, either IE or Firefox expands the containing DIV out to be wider than the screen when I put a 100% wide DIV inside the containing DIV. What exactly is the right way to specify widths of DIVs to get this to happen. Of course, this also rears its head when a 100% wide table is inserted in the containing DIV. Again, I could fix this with a hack but don't really want to. Of course, any other comments or suggestions about the site are more than welcome; of course, content is really not in my hands as others are now writing and approving it. I will be periodically updating the site during the weekend as the situation changes, so if you have any suggestions I will try to fix the site up along the way - and if you find a problem, a solution would be really handy too! Thanks for you help. If I don't respond quickly, it's just because I am taking some time to look away from a screen for a while. Hi Everyone, I have been lurking on the list for a while and have really enjoyed it, this group seems very helpful and friendly. I found this list through the css-f one. I am starting to get my act together in terms of html standards, css and accessibility-lots to learn! I thought I would dive in to ask about a site I am working on right now... -I just did a site redesign and wanted to get feedback. This site was tough as it had to be fully bilingual on each page and the fourth biggest group of users use Netscape 3!!! How did I get so lucky? http://www.c-l-c.ca/mainpage.html Does the navigation work okay on the left side nav? Do you see any bugs? Do you see anything problematic with the css? Any suggestions, comments? -In N6 on Win ME the left side nav is only white text on blue with no formatting. When I go to mouseover the links, all I get is a white bar over the link area-so you can't see it. Anyone have any idea why? I found it weird, as I used similar code on another site and it worked over in N6. It's very nice that your client prefers red (probably because he's up to his arms in that colour all day), but what message is it sending out to the users? The thing to do is go back to your original spec and look at the goals you're client set for the job. Then you need to discuss the colour scheme in terms of those goals and not his personal preference. Golden rule. Ban subjectivity from the decision making process. [WSG] Feedback on site
I was asked to create and maintain a website. I wanted to try out CSS, although I eventually resorted to tables for layout. I'm a beginner at this sort of thing, learning on my own. Anyway, the site's been up for a while, and I'm thinking that it's time to make improvements. It's at http://www.med.mun.ca/surgery/ The colour scheme has to stay. The boss says if it's for surgeons, it should be red. I'm wondering if it's worth trying to get away from the tables, and reading here about lists of links, and wondering if that might be an improvement to try. Any feedback is welcome. And this is something that is probably obvious but is driving me crazy. ENT wanted something online, so I put a kind of draft together to give them an idea of the sort of content and organization they might think about. But the text in text is centred, and I think it should be left-aligned. Re: [WSG] Feedback on site :: color red
Color -- Try Michael Kear's Colourschemer mentioned yesterday for some deeper reds. http://afpwebworks.com/colourschemer/ colour 1 should be 99 colour 2 should be 00 Keep steps at 5 or extend for more gradient like results. can change color 2 to ff for lighter shading (like the background colors on links, etc.) The 99 color came from http://www.presentations.com -- they should know about color psychology. My opinion about alignment -- Left alignment looks much more professional and with-it -- centering went out with the late 90s! Many ways to fill the left side if contact info is not enough to give the page balance (color block/gridlines, etc.) Donna * The discussion list for http://webstandardsgroup.org/ See http://webstandardsgroup.org/mail/guidelines.cfm for some hints on posting to the list getting help *

It's at http://www.med.mun.ca/surgery/ You should get rid of the width: 100%; on the body element. In conjunction with the margin-left: 5%; it produces horizontal scroll bars on both IE6 and Firefox 0.8. 100% width to the body element is the width of the viewport. In both the W3C and the Microsoft box model margins don't count towards the width. So when you also stick margins in with a 100% width, you are requesting that the browser display more than a viewport worth horizontally, thereby producing a scroll bar. * The discussion list for http://webstandardsgroup.org/ See http://webstandardsgroup.org/mail/guidelines.cfm for some hints on posting to the list getting help *
