Re: [wsjt-devel] QT 5.5 build prob

2016-03-30 Thread Guy G4DWV/4X1LT
Has anybody any ideas yet as to what the problem is in my original message
stopping me running WSJT-X QT 5.5 on one of my PCs?

I am doing things very simply and most of the things mentioned in this
thread goes over my head. I am compiling and running WSJT-X as I was advised
when I started out using JTSDK and everything has been working 100% FB (or
with easy fixes if not) to date.

Thanks

As you can see from other replies, others keep them separate. I only do so
as a) I did not know that I could so otherwise and b ) I like to keep my
programs in the programs files folders - I do not have any issues on windows
7 as I have tweaked the security requirements - I do not need protecting
from myself or the bad internet. I do not run programs that insist on being
installed outside of these locations.

I did not run one installer from on PC on another. What I meant to say was
that running the installer fixed this problem on one PC whereas running the
others PCs installer did not fix the problem on the other machine. I only
ran the installer on the PC on which it was created.

Sorry Bill. I did not use the debug build, I used the rinstall build. I will
clarify what I meant.

This is on the PC where QT55 worked. I initially used rinstall to build the
QT55 build and then copied it over to the working folder. This failed. I
them created an install package (build-wsjtx package) and ran that and then
I could run WSJT-X QT55. This did not work on the PC with which I am having
the problem.

[wsjt-devel] QT 5.5 build prob

2016-03-21 Thread Guy G4DWV/4X1LT
I have successfully build and got a QT 5.5 build to run on one PC but am
having trouble on another. I have built hamlib3 and used an install package
- the latter fixed issues on the working PC after doing an 'rinstall' failed.

The error dialogue box I get is here
http://www.g4dwv.co.uk/wsjtx/wsjtx-qt55.png.

How can I fix this? I have no real reason for trying a QT 5.5 build other
than that I wanted to try it.

Greg,

I am *really* sorry if I missed any requests for further information. It is
being a VERY busy day here email-wise with several tech support issues
flying around at once.

On one PC (Tardis), I can only build hamlib3 on JTSDK-MSYS. I can then
successfully build a QT 5.5 version of WSJT-X.

On the other PC (Acer) I can also build hamlib3 on JTSDK-MSYS only. The
error page displayed in both cases is
http://g4dwv.co.uk/wsjtx/2016-03-09_12h35_10.png. On both Tardis and Acer I
can build WSJT-X QT 5.5 FB.

If you want any further info, please ask again and I'll see if I can answer
it. At this stage, the only issue is that I cannot build hamlib3 on JTSDK-QT
5.5.

Hi Mike,

The hamlib3 build failed with the following error message "The system cannot
find the batch label specified - BUILD-ERROR".

I went ahead and tried to build WSJT-X in any case and got a different
failure, much earlier in the build process.

I have uploaded a screenshot of the failure and the CMakeOutput.log to
www.g4dwv.co.uk/wsjtx. The log file does not have the current datestamp on
it, but it is the correctfile. I found it by doing a search for all
similarly named files and none had today's date (8th March).

I had an identical fail on another PC on which I have JTSDK installed. I
checked for a CMake log file with today's date but could not find one.

Thanks for your never-ending help and support

Maybe we could organise a pincer movement and try to win this time, hi hi?
To me the case is just as strong as it is for the feature after 73.

That mod would be very useful. I build with JTDSK, but do not know how to
incorporate patches. I am a total novice, to say the least, in the
programming dept. It is on my 'to-do' list wish a book and the environment
at the ready.

If you could help me to try this I would be interested to learn something
new. Maybe off the group would be more suitable? If you think so my email is
good at qrz.com. Would it be possible to toggle the log prompt? I tend to
log before the RRR, and in spite of some recent spinal surgery (and 2 more
ops to come) my need for the litter box is not that much more urgent than it
was.

I have just come back to JT modes after a few months off. There is an option
to turn off 'Enable Tx' after a 73, I assume that is because it is that
station's last over of that QSO. I was wondering if that should apply to Tx4
where that is a stations last over in that QSO? According to the formal
minimum QSO, 'RRR' aka Tx4, it is the last over in the QSO itself.

Hi Greg,

The update went fine.

I had a look at the build lists (had to use -u instead of -a) and now I am
confused.

Typing "build-wsjt-x rinstall" seems to build the 1.7.0 dev version that it
did before, but that command line does not seem to match the command line
switches available nor the build lists.

I'm puzzled, but that is nothing new.

Thanks for your work on JTSDK.

What is the difference between WSJT-X QT5 and QT 5.5? I use JTSDK on a very
basic level and sometimes this sort of simple question is not addressed in
documentation. This is NOT a criticism and is not to be taken as a negative
comment at all; it may come across as that as written.

I cannot reproduce this error here. Can you try doing a separate

I will do some further checking on this. Thanks.

If you are running on the same machine as you are building, you don't
need to build the package target. There is an install target that
directly installs the application into a folder (please don't use a
program files directory for this as you will have to authenticate every
time.). This target gets you a runnable application but doesn't install
the short cuts or the un-install entry in the registry. You can add a
short cut to your desktop that runs the installed application for
convenient quick start up. this approach is much simpler if you are
testing the latest revision of the development code since you will
probably want to re-build fairly regularly.

That sounds VERY handy. What is the release target to use for this? Is it
rinstall? The help-wsjtx text is not that clear.

I have been trying to get the JTDSK documentation built, but am having real
difficulties, but do not want to fill this developers' group with
novice-level noise - I am feeling guilty enough as it is asking the
questions I am a JTSDK novice. I wish there were a help group for non-devs.

Thanks again Bill for sticking with this.

this. It just makes things much more tidy and logical ;-).

I usually see the error message when trying to install a program when its

BTW, I always install WSJT-X by building the installer package.

Bill Somerville g4wjs@... writes:

Since Microsoft started using the NTFS file system, installing software
into the Program Files (x86) or Program FIles on x86_64 systems is
not a good idea unless the application specifically needs the elevated
privileges granted by by being there. These folders are special and are
intended for system level applications that are not part of the
operating system. WSJT-X is not a system level application, it is a pure
user level application and as such should be installed in a normal
folder, the choice is yours but the installer recommends C:\WSJT\wsjtx .

Installing an application into one of the special program files folders
means that application has access to things that it does not need and
should not have access to. Only install applications into the special
program files folders if the installation instructions give a good
 reason to do so.

If you have other applications that interact with WSJT-X like JTAlert
you are going to get into trouble if one is in a special programs files
folder and the other not. You must be consistent with cooperating
programs and outside of the special program files folders is the correct
 option unless advised otherwise.

Hi Bill,

Hope you are well.

I am aware of all the above and do not have any problems related to it;
either on my main PC nor any of other PCs, each of which has several windows
installs all configured exactly the same way.

Everything was working just fine during until recently (less than a week
ago)when the error message mentioned in the OP appeared. Nothing had been
changed my end related to your post above to have caused the issue to
suddenly arise.

Can you please advise how to fix it?

Thanks In Advance.

If RRR is the 73 for the CQ side, changing it to RR73 (as I have seen

exclusive JTx use, I never knew that as hams each end up sending separate 73

I propose to change the initial defaults for the waterfall to be a 4 kHz
bandwidth (0 - 4000 Hz) with a suitable bins/pixel setting to fit on the

 to JT65+JT9.

Bill, this is where some of the confusion arises with those new to the mode
(I'm still learning). I now use the WSJT-X waterfall after Mikes help, now
that I realise its importance.

The thing is that you mention the default bandwidth and then a suitable
bins/pixel setting as two different things. When I adjusted the bins/pixel
setting here I also increased the waterfall bandwidth.

I was not aware that some of the waterfall settings did not just alter the
display, but configured WSJT-X too.

I wonder if some form of a short quick start type of guide (a 'read this if
you don't read anything else') would be helpful. If so, I would be more than
happy to help with it as it is my 'fault' this issue arose. My email address
on qrz.com is good.
