[X2Go-User] X2Go: The Gathering 2024 (2024-06-28 to 2024-06-30) will take place at Linuxhotel, Essen, Germany

2024-05-23 Thread Vorstand ORCA e.V.

Dear $ALL,

As stated in the subject line, X2Go: The Gathering 2024 will take place
at Linuxhotel, Essen, Germany, from Friday afternoon, 2024-06-28, to
Sunday afternoon/evening, 2024-06-30 and will, again, be a three-day
"work and play" (coding, chatting, sightseeing, socializing) event.

X2Go: The Gathering is the annual event where users, admins, and
developers (including the i18n volunteers) of X2Go meet face to face, to
discuss current X2Go-related issues, fix open bugs, and have a good time
getting to know each other.
As there is some overlap between X2Go, Arctica, and orca e.V., you can
expect to see members of those groups as well.

After 4 years spent "in exile" (with a skeleton crew of volunteers
meeting at shackspace in 2020, and going completely virtual in the years
2021-2023) due to the pandemic situation, we are finally returning to a
full real-life event at Linuxhotel (though we will be
streaming/recording our sessions, so you can join in remotely as well).

Note that while we do not require masks to be worn, it is still
recommended and endorsed, especially in indoor areas.
At the time of writing this invitation, and using some educated guesses
regarding under-reporting and wastewater analysis, Covid infection rate
in Germany is roughly somewhere between 1 out of 1000 and 1 out of 500
people per week.

*ATTENTION!*
If you want to join us *and* want to sleep in one of the hotel rooms at
the Linuxhotel, we need the number of beds and nights you want to
reserve, as well as *your full name* (as printed on your passport) and
*your nationality* by *2024-06-07* *23:59:59* *CEST*!!!
Very important!!! After that date, we cannot guarantee that we will
still be able to reserve a room for you! First come, first serve! As
single rooms are in short supply, please book your bed in a 2- or 3-bed
room, unless you absolutely have to use a single room.

Please send your reservation request to
with the text "The Gathering" somewhere in the subject and bug me
publicly on the X2Go-Project list if you don't receive a confirmation by
e-mail after a day or two.

If for some reason or other you do *not* need a place to sleep at
Linuxhotel, but *do* want to join us, please *still* let us know in
advance that you're planning to visit. There's no such hard deadline as
for the room reservations, but you will need to "check in" (and there
will be an "Admission fee") for our gathering with the Linuxhotel staff,
so please *do* let us know in advance.

We will be updating the Wiki page
 as more
information becomes available.

We already have one sponsor for the event - CFD.direct have kindly
offered to sponsor the Pizzas on Friday evening - but the more, the
merrier, so if you know someone willing and able to co-sponsor the
event, please let us know at as well.
Whether they wish to send us some "swag" with their company branding, or
pledge money that we can use to lower dining and lodging costs for our
participants (or to lower their health risks by providing masks,
sanitizers and free testing), their sponsorship is greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,
Stefan Baur, "X2Go: The Gathering" event organizer

Re: [X2Go-User] x2go-user Digest, Vol 119, Issue 3

2024-05-22 Thread sairuk
on a wayland based client machine QT_QPA_PLATFORM=xcb does permit the
client to run somewhat, however when I was testing this some time ago two
problems resulted in an unusable experience
- client window resizing eventually stopped worked i.e dragging, fullscreen
etc
- keyboard input was lost in the client window

arguably these may have the same root cause, my testing was only out of
curiosity so it wasn't exhaustive. I eventually reverted to X11 for this
and other performance reasons generally

Closing the client whilst running on wayland and restarting the client
worked for a time then the same problems would occur.

Client machine was KDE, I am not sure what their wayland implementation was
at the time.I have not motivation to move to wayland as x2go is my primary
interface locally.

Re: [X2Go-User] x2go-user Digest, Vol 119, Issue 3

2024-05-22 Thread Ulrich Sibiller
Hm,

is this bug about the x2goclient or is about NX or even kdrive? A lot
of guessing here

On Stackoverflow
(https://stackoverflow.com/questions/21488072/what-is-the-use-of-various-qt-platform-plugins)
I find this regarding QT_QPA_PLATFORM:

xcb - Runs on an X11 server and is integrated into the X11 windowing
environment. Generally it won't behave correctly without a window
manager running as well. Can be made to work on Windows, given a
Windows implementation of xlib, if you want to, say, serve
applications from a Windows server to X11 thin terminals (typically
Unix boxes).

So if the user has Wayland this is the wrong setting for the client
side, at least for the x2go client qt code. Depending on XWayland
seems wrong to me here.

Clients inside the nx session are talking to the remote X server and
would require Xwayland. So I _think_ the only component that should
run with XWayland is the nxproxy. Setting the var you mentioned will
have the side effect of nxproxy finding the XWayland X-server that was
started for x2goclient. So a quick test would be to replace nxproxy by
a wrapper script that runs nxproxy with XWayland. I have no experience
in this wayland stuff, so I may be totally wrong. Until now I was
under the impression that XWayland is starts automatically if a client
tries to open a Display.

What is the best approach to address this. As X2Go Client interacts
with the remote X session, it surely would make sense to launch the
complete X2Go Client process via QT_QPA_PLATFORM=xcb and require
XWayland to run. Is that a viable approach? Where should we enforce
that (that being the switched from Wayland display to X11 display)?

which seems to attempt running Wayland applications on an X server. I
would guess that could work on X2go, too. (I don't have Wayland anywhere

My idea to use X2GO in corp environment on linux & windoze, and I have complain

users?
For example make connection, configuration setting to set ready

any advise, suggestion welcome

To avoid accidental changes, you can use --no-menu and
--no-session-edit, as explained in "man x2goclient", and store the
sessions file on a read-only network share.
--session-conf=/path/to/sessions-file is the parameter for that, also
explained in the manpage.

Or you can use a session broker setup.

However, there is no way of stopping a user that deliberately wants to
mess with the configuration.
They will always find a way to run x2goclient without any
parameters/with their custom parameters, bypassing your restrictions.

I guess the only way around it might (i.e., still no guarantee) be the
HTML5Client in a rather elaborate setup, where users do not have direct
access to the X2GoServer via IP, only to the HTML5Client. But, the
HTML5Client is neither release-ready nor feature-complete yet ...

"speaking" X only) by using the Xwayland on the client, since that is where
the resulting X protocol messages need to be handled. Pure Wayland
applications will not work with this setup (although I don't even know if
such applications exist at all).
https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/482129/can-i-run-wayland-application-in-x
states
that Weston is able to work as a proxy between wayland apps and X11.

So AFAIU a solution with Waypipe would be something completely different
where x2go only handles the session management.

I have tried to put this into a table (AFAIU). In || I list the the used
protocol:
X: standard X11 protocol
NX: nx compressed protocol
WL: Wayland
WP: Waypipe
XK: x2gokdrive protocol
XS: X11 tunneled through ssh

These are the possible communications ways:
  ServerClient
1 XApp |X11| Xserver
2 XApp |X11| sshd |XS| ssh |X11|
Xserver
3 XApp |X11| nxagent|NX| nxproxy |X11|
Xserver
4 XApp |X11| x2gokdrive |XK| x2gokdriveclient |X11|
Xserver
5 XApp |X11| nxagent|NX| nxproxy |X11|
Xwayland |WL| Wayland
6 XApp |X11| x2gokdrive |XK| x2gokdriveclient |X11|
Xwayland |WL| Wayland
7 WaylandApp |WL| Waypipe|WP| Waypipe |WL|
Wayland
8 WaylandApp |WL| Weston |X11| nxagent |NX|nxproxy |X11|
Xserver
9 WaylandApp |WL| Waypipe|WP| Waypipe |WL|
Weston |X11| Xserver

So we have to setup anything on the server that outputs one of the four
protocols: XS, NX, XK, WP. On the client side we have to route these four
protocols to either display them on an Xserver or a Wayland server. The
less components between app and server the better the experience. But to
support both server types and both app types there are some compromises
required.

I am not into any Wayland or Waypipe stuff, so correct me if I'm wrong.

No. Not in the sense that it can be locked down completely against a

Currently, we do not have any volunteer working on this, to my

Unless Covid numbers play a prank on us on short notice, we'll be
hosting X2Go: The Gathering 2024 at Linuxhotel Essen by the end of June.
(A wiki page for the event already exists, the official announce will
follow soon). I hope that we'll be able to discuss the future of a
possible X2Go-Wayland-Integration at that event.
My rough guess is that it will involve X2Go-KDrive, while NX will not be
supported for Wayland connections. And yes, somehow merging waypipe with
X2Go's session persistence features and client GUI is probably the way
to go.

It definitely reads it, I have something like:

Host xyz
    HostName example.com
    ... other options ...

and I can tell X2Go to connect to host xyz. However, as Ulrich points
out X2Go doesn't handle the configuration in exactly the same way as
ssh, for example "Include" directives are handled slightly differently.

I think that the best approach with your problem is probably to use
ssh-agent and ControlPath directives. Then use your command-line ssh to
establish the connection and X2Go can hopefully make use of that, even
though you have such an extreme mismatch between ssh versions. You can
try something like the following in .ssh/config:

Host example.com
    ControlPath /tmp/ssh-ctl-%l-%h-%p-%r
    ControlMaster auto
    ControlPersist 600

%C can be used in place of %l-%h-%p-%r, but the latter makes it easier
to see which control socket belongs to a particular connection. (Do 'man
ssh_config' for the full details on these directives.)

With the following in my ssh config file

Host example.com
    PubkeyAcceptedAlgorithms +ssh-rsa
    HostKeyAlgorithms=+ssh-rsa

I can run ssh on the command line successfully but trying to start an
x2go

session results in

Make sure you have the newest available x2goclient, maybe try to recompile

[X2Go-User] Next Event/Upcoming X2Go and orca e.V. Sponsorship Drive - Starting Tomorrow, 2024-03-26, to 2024-03-28

2024-03-25 Thread Stefan Baur

Dear $ALL,

X2Go will be present at Linux-Info-Day
 in Augsburg, Germany on Saturday,
April 20th.

At this event, we will have a booth where we will demo X2Go-KDrive, as
well as the HTML5Client beta and X2Go's integration into the latest
Remmina client.

We're still waiting to hear back from the Linux-Info-Day crew regarding
a talk slot - we have submitted a CfP for a talk regarding how to
incorporate SSH, 2FA and X2Go into a simple, but effective Ransomware
protection for vintage as well as current Microsoft Windows versions.

If you're planning to attend and/or are in the area, feel free to stop
by and say hi! Attendance is free, and you do not need to register
beforehand.

We are trying to cover the costs for our two volunteers/orca e.V.
members (Mihai and me) via orca e.V., the registered association that
X2Go belongs to, but for that, we will need your help in the form of
donations*.

Sadly, funding for X2Go events has tanked since we separated it from the
main X2Go donation pool - we haven't received a single donation for our
event budget yet.
Which means that not only the trip to Linux Info Day is still in need of
funding, but also the previous one to Linux Days Chemnitz. :'(

The situation for our infrastructure budget is a little better, but we
could use some help there as well.

You can find our donation pages here:

It would be really cool if you could send some $$$/€€€/£££/¥¥¥ our way,
so we can keep advocating for X2Go and free remote desktop/remote

We can accept donations via PayPal, Credit Card, Direct Debit,
giropay/paydirect and wire transfer. Best of all, donations towards X2Go

[X2Go-User] Missing fonts

2024-03-22 Thread NICHOLSON, STEPHEN J.
Hi,

I'm trying to use software called MB-System over X2Go but I seem to be missing
fonts. Is there a way I can add these?

-misc-fixed-bold-r-normal-13-120-75-75-c-70-iso8859-1
-misc-fixed-bold-r-normal-13-125-75-75-c-70-iso8859-1

MBSystem dependencies need XFonts-100 and I made sure to install every font
option when installing X2Go.

Thanks

When I do this from a Windows machine, it works without problems.

How can I debug this further?

[X2Go-User] Lots of artifacts with deb12 server

2024-03-02 Thread E. N.
Hi all,

getting a lot of artifacts on a machine I upgraded from deb11+x2go repos
server packages to deb12+x2go distro packages. (v4.1.0.3-7).

I though about going for x2go repos, but deb12/bookworm isn't mentioned,
should I go for the x2go repos or stick to the deb packages?

Client is Ubuntu 22.04LTS with v4.1.2.2 which has worked alright for various
x2go servers so far.

Server hardware changed, too, before was Ryzen 3000, now is intel N100 in case
that matters.
Connection settings are LAN plus default compression method 16m-jpeg, tried
2m-jpeg, too. (Too many options btw or too little explanation on differences)

Appreciate any advice.

We are currently severely understaffed on the volunteer side, so both
Windows and macOS Clients won't see a release any time soon.
For Windows, there is a "Beta" build that at least incorporates the
kdriveclient.

However, if you have a business use case, feel free to sponsor the work
on these releases by contracting one of the companies listed here:

Be warned, though, there is quite some technological debt involved, as
no one bothered to sponsor work on this in the last few years, so this
isn't going to be cheap, no matter which one of these companies you
contract.

Basically, the entire build environment needs a proper overhaul, upgrade
to a new Windows client version, etc.

Hi,

I am not involved in Releases, so I cannot directly answer your
question. But you can build your own x2goclient on Linux, too (see
https://gitlab.x2go.org/x2go/client/x2goclient/-/blob/master/README.mxe),
which should be easier to setup than a Windows build host. This build
should come with recent versions of those libs. Maybe that's an
option?

[X2Go-User] error

2024-01-27 Thread richard lucassen
On one of my laptops I am not able to set up a connection to the x2go
server. When starting a custom desktop:

ssh-agent startx wmaker

I get the black "x2go" screen and then crash. I see this in the logs:

daemon.warn: Jan 26 11:41:54 /usr/libexec/WindowMaker/wmaker[483025]:

I have more clients with the same version 4.1.2.2-2+b1 (Debian Testing)
that connect to the same server and do not suffer from this issue.

It is not an x2go problem AFAIK, but can anyone give me a hint where to
start looking for a solution?

[X2Go-User] Network of Debian 12 workstations, seem to have SSH issues more than X2Go issues

2024-01-23 Thread Nasi Chassoulas

Hi all,

My first post here. I have spent a few weeks trying to set up X2Go to
manage a small network of Debian based workstations. Some of them are
user workstations, some headless servers, some using Gnome (X11 as far
as possible, not Wayland).

I have had some success accessing user desktops sessions, but I have
broken this with some sshd_config changes.

I would appreciate any advice. I have checked some logs, with this being
the most obvious issue.

XSession-x2go: X session started for administrator at Tue 16 Jan 2024 20:51:43

xrdb: Can't open display ':51'
xhost: unable to open display ":51"

In the X2Go client, on some clients I get the 'session select' window,
on others I get stuck in a password prompt loop.

If its not a basic issue with X, I suspect its with SSH.

I appreciate any help offered. Thanks for the development of a great
product.

Thanks,

Nasi

[X2Go-User] only a black screen in the X2Go Session

Hi all,

I'm a new user of X2Go.

I have installed the X2Go server on a centos7 VM and a X2Go client on my PC

When I start a X2Go Session trying with Gnome (GDM active on my server) or even

Re: [X2Go-User] X2go K Drive Server

2024-01-01 Thread Stuart MacGregor

Good Afternoon,

I have answered most of my own question. My Ubuntu client was from the
Ubuntu repo, not the x2go repo. When I added the x2go ppa and updated
the client, the QT5 drive backend installed and I was able to connect
using kdrive without changing anything on the server. I will check on
performance later. My first impression is that it is still a little
"laggy", though that might just be the wifi connection on the Unbuntu
client, it is an old laptop circa 2011.

My question is now only about the Windows clients. Is there an update
available for them to allow connection using kdrive? Is there other
software that must be downloaded? At the moment they start to connect
and then immediately disconnect when the "kdrive" box is checked.

Stuart MacGregor

[X2Go-User] New Donation Options for X2Go/Upcoming Sponsorship Drive on NYE

2023-12-28 Thread Stefan Baur

Hi $ALL,

One result of X2Go: The Spread 2023 was that we decided to re-organize
our donation options.

As before, you can make donations to orca e.V. (our registered
nonprofit) and X2Go in general.

However, now you can also make a dedicated donation towards X2Go's
infrastructure or events.

You can find the links to both the old and new donation options right on
X2Go's Wiki frontpage:

We are also investigating if we can use the platform to fund further
development on X2Go, e.g. by putting up funding goals for certain
features, but this will take some more time - first we'll need some
legal counseling so as not to endanger orca e.V.'s non-profit status.
And this legal counseling will have to be donation-funded as well ...

Important:
On New Year's Eve, 2023-12-31, all non-recurring donations up to 100 EUR
will receive 15% on top from betterplace.org (donations above 100 EUR
will receive 15 EUR on top, regardless of the amount), until the top-up
budget of 8 000 EUR across all projects registered with betterplace is
reached. This starts midnight 2023-12-31 CET, so the earlier you donate
on that particular day, the higher the chances that your donation
towards orca/X2Go will receive the additional 15%.

Kind Regards,
Stefan Baur

[X2Go-User] X2Go: The Spread 2023 - Recordings/How-To-Videos Now Online

2023-12-28 Thread Stefan Baur

Hi $ALL,

Our annual X2Go event took place from December 11 to December 15.

All presentations/discussions were streamed live via YouTube, and are
also available as recordings via the following playlist:

If you missed the live event, I strongly recommend watching the
recordings - some of these presentations are "How To"-videos, think
"Everything You Always Wanted to Know About X2Go* (*But Were Afraid to
Ask)". So if you've never used anything but a complete remote Linux
desktop via X2Go, or if you've never bothered to look at what other
options than pxelinux exist for netbooting a ThinClient, you'll learn
something new here.

Re: [X2Go-User] X2go and Synopsys Custom Compiler

2023-12-07 Thread Ulrich Sibiller
Hi,

Telekinesis still works? My last information is that it has been
abandoned for years...

Does it also crash on a Linux client? If not, it is probably related
to the Xserver on Windows crashing in certain situations. In that case
it might help to exchange vcxsrv by something else, e.g. X410 or
xming.

You can also try with x2gokdrive, which is a using a newer Xserver
than NX. Your application might rely on some features that are
currently not available in NX based sessions.

Re: [X2Go-User] TR: x2go <-> linux mint 21

2023-11-29 Thread Loïc Roemelin
Hi,
Thanks very much for XFCE The procedure is as follows (hoping the translation
is accurate; I have a Linux installed in French...)
Gestionnaire de paramètres : "Settings Manager"
Peaufinage des fenêtres : "Window Manager Tweaks"
Onglet Compositeur : "Compositor" Tab
Décocher "Activer le compositeur d'affichage" : Uncheck "Enable Display
Compositor"
And it works perfectly

More than one issue to resolve... which is not resolved yet. I don't have a
firewall installed... it happens to me on several installations, while PuTTY
works correctly. However, I noticed that every time the first connection
attempt fails, the server is no longer accessible via x2go on the line that
experienced the failure...

A big thank you for your invaluable help.
Best regards.

Loic

Hi,

x2go will use ssh to connect back from the server to the client for
stuff like sound, printer and filesharing. That's why a was askign you
to disable all that. Your server must be able to establish the ssh
connection.. Maybe there's some problem from the server to the client
in your LAN case which does not exist in the internet case. No idea
how exactly your setup looks like. You can try to disable the firewall
on both machines and see if that changes anything. If so we need to
track your settings down.

Regarding the XFCE: _maybe_ your XFCE is using OpenGL and you can find
a way to disable it. According to this (German) page
(https://wiki.ubuntuusers.de/Xfce_Composite-Effekte/) you can check
with xfconf-query --channel=xfwm4 --property=/general/use_compositing
--type=bool and toggle the setting with xfconf-query --channel=xfwm4
--property=/general/use_compositing --type=bool --toggle

Hello,

Thank you very much for taking the time to respond to me.
1 - Putty works perfectly; disabling the sound doesn't change anything. When
connecting via the internet and port forwarding through the router, it works.
Is there an issue with SSH?

2 - no, it's not enabled

3 - ulps x2goversion returns
x2godesktopsharing: 3.2.0.0
x2goserver: 4.1.0.3
x2goserver-common: 4.1.0.3
x2goserver-desktopsharing: 4.1.0.3
x2goserver-extensions: 4.1.0.3

x2goserver-printing: 4.1.0.3
x2goserver-x2goagent: 3.5.99.26
x2goserver-xsession: 4.1.0.3
I will uninstall and reinstall the correct version. I took the link from the
internet, thinking it was the latest version. I didn't have the curiosity to
check. Thanks a thousand times for your help

Hi,

Issue 1: does plain ssh access work between these machines and the
server? Does it work better when you disable sound, printer and file
sharing in the session?

Issue 2: Have you enabled x2gokdrive in the session?

Issue 3: ould be fixed since 2022:

Do you have X2goserver 4.1.2.2?

2023-11-27 Thread Ulrich Sibiller
Hi,

Issue 1: does plain ssh access work between these machines and the
server? Does it work better when you disable sound, printer and file
sharing in the session?

Issue 2: Have you enabled x2gokdrive in the session?

Issue 3: ould be fixed since 2022:
https://bugs.x2go.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=1457

Do you have X2goserver 4.1.2.2?

[X2Go-User] x2go <-> linux mint 21

2023-11-27 Thread Loïc Roemelin
Hi,

I'm new to x2go. I'm using Linux Mint 21, and I've installed the x2go server on
several machines for testing. I'm mainly facing three issues:

1 On two machines, I failed to establish the initial connection. Upon the first
connection to this access (on the local network), the connection is cut almost
instantly. The message indicates "terminating session" and "session terminated."
Note that on the same device, I can connect without any problems when using the
internet

2 I'm initially on Linux Mint XFCE, and the connection works, but it's nearly
impossible to work due to window movements leaving all windows displayed, etc.

3 On LXDE, which I've loaded and works quite well, it asks me for the
administrator password when opening the session, even if I've entered with
another access, which seems abnormal to me. The message indicates,
"Authentication is necessary to create a color management device."

Thank you in advance for your help, and I apologize for my lack of knowledge

The HTML5 client is currently more of a Proof of Concept and not

We are currently looking for sponsors that are willing to fund further

As for RPMs, that depends on the Linux distribution and version ...

[X2Go-User] X2Go: The Spread 2023 - You (K)Drive Me Krazy! 2023-12-11 to 2023-12-10

2023-11-11 Thread Stefan Baur

Dear $ALL,

In exactly one month, from December 11th to December 15th, we'll have
our annual X2Go meeting for users, admins and code contributors to X2Go
- once again, 100% virtual/online, so it's a "The Spread" and not a "The
Gathering" once more. We're hoping to see you there.

We'll post a link to a virtual meeting room in due time, and expect to
be streaming/recording the event to YouTube or a similar platform as well.

Starting time will likely be 20:00 CET, as last year, unless a
significant number of participants requests an earlier start time (say,
18:00 CET or 19:00 CET) - please let me know (off-list, see below for
contact details) if you'd like to request an earlier start time.

Sadly, in summer, where Covid numbers and weather conditions would have
allowed for a real-life meeting, we had a scheduling conflict. And as
the numbers are rising again, we cannot in good conscience host a
real-life international conference - especially as some of our members
have vulnerable household members or are vulnerable persons themselves.

The event page (still work in progress) can be found here:

Each evening has one, max. two time slots for a talk/presentation.
At the moment, three topics are confirmed:
- The usual "X2Go: State of the Union" opening speech
- A report looking back at our latest stable X2Go release, which brought
KDrive into the stable repository, and showing what still needs to be
   done Re: KDrive.
- A report on how we used betterplace.org for collecting X2Go-related
donations in the last 18 months, and an open discussion on how we
could improve our usage of this platform.

I am also hoping for a certain volunteer to commit to a fourth
presentation regarding the latest changes and improvements in NX-Libs -
since Arctica/NX-Libs pushed out a new release as well (on which our
X2Go release is also based, obviously).

This means we will have at least one more open talk slot - possibly
more, if the two release reports for NX-Libs and X2Go only take 10-15
minutes each.

If nobody volunteers, I might fill that remaining slot with a quick demo
of how to netboot X2Go-TCE-Live via iPXE in EFI and legacy mode.

But I'm really hoping for more volunteers for talks/demos/presentations
- so if you would like to present something
X2Go/NX-Libs/Arctica-related, please let me know (again, off-list, see
below for contact details).

We also have the option to prerecord your talk, in case your schedule
doesn't allow for a live presentation and/or your internet connection is
too flaky. It would be nice if you're available for a live Q round
after your talk, though (via text-only chat or audio-only stream is fine).

Please note that this time, the orca e.V. annual meeting will take place
on the Sunday morning *before* the start of X2Go: The Spread 2023. All
orca e.V. members have already received their invitation.

To contact me, please do not hit "reply"/"reply to all"/"reply to list",
but rather, send a *new* E-Mail to .

No. While X2Go has limited remote support capabilities (the "Connection
to local desktop" setting), it is a terminal server, meant to serve
hardware-independent desktops and applications, not a cheap clone of
TeamViewer or AnyDesk. In a way, X2GoClient takes the role of the Login

What exactly is the underlying problem you are trying to solve?

[X2Go-User] How can I connect and view the Display Manager

2023-10-26 Thread Esben Stien

I'm trying to log in and view the Display Manager login screen. I'm
using SDDM as Display Manager, but I can use any kind of Display
Manager, like gdm, to get this working.

If I first log in, then I can connect using "Connection to local
desktop"

, but I want to view the login screen.

Should this be possible with X2Go. I can't really find any documentation
on this. It sort of bypasses the Display Manager.

So far good results! The previous tests failed because when the network
connection was lost the session was lost, which made it unusable for my use
case. Now this problem seems fixed. When network connection is lost, the
client crashes, which is annoying, but not does not make it unusable. The
session is preserved and restarting the client reconnects fine.

[X2Go-User] AdminByRequest on X2go

2023-10-20 Thread Jeff Thomas
Hello,I have installed AdminByRequest on Ubuntu 22.04. It works on the local
machine. If a user attempts to do something that requires Admin privileges they
will receive a popup that requires them to request admin privileges.  Once they
request it the popup disappears and rights are granted for the remainder of
their session. (ABR logs the activity)
For the few remote X2go users if they try to do something that requires Admin
privileges they will see a message that ABR blocked it, but they do not get the
popup to request it.
ABR is looking at the issue, but I suspect they will say it is not intended to
use on remote session, where multiple people may be signed in at a time...
Though we only have a few remote users.
Im hoping there may be a way to get the xcfe gui on x2go to display the ABR
popup.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
ThanksJT

Anybody know if this is still current?

https://wiki.x2go.org/doku.php/doc:howto:ssh-agent-workaround

It suggests a patch was available in 2017

I can see a fresh ssh-agent(1) is getting started (so blocking access to
the original client one)

also I note the use of /-oClearAllForwardings on the ssh call x2go makes
. neither look like good news :-(

I did try  (XFCE) :

xfconf-query -c xfce4-session -p /startup/ssh-agent/enabled -n -t bool
-s false

xfconf-query -c xfce4-session -p /startup/ssh-agent/type -n -t string -s
ssh-agent

And indeed the ssh-agnet was not started, but SSH_AUTH_SOCK (to
tmp/ssh-xx/agent.PID   [ literally PID not a number ]

FYI I need to use the keys to access github and I don't want to put them
on the machine I'm x2going into.

BTW. I also ran a test using a "custom desktop" of /usr/bin/lxterminal

[X2Go-User] Debian resume does not work anymore after update to 4.1.0.6

2023-10-14 Thread richard lucassen
Client and server "Debian Testing"

This morning I got server version 4.1.0.6 using apt. When connecting
using client 4.1.2.3-1 it works, but after a resume the client says
that the session is still running so the only way to get back to the
server is to terminate the session and to create a new one. I
downgraded the server to 4.1.0.3-7+deb12u1 and resuming works again. I
run a command x environment:

/usr/bin/ssh-agent /usr/bin/wmaker

I'm at 1000km away from the server and as I use x2go all the time, so I
won't be able for the moment to run some tests. Just FYI for the
moment. I put these packages on hold:

# apt-mark hold libx2go-config-perl libx2go-log-perl
libx2go-server-db-perl libx2go-server-perl libx2go-utils-perl
x2goserver x2goserver-common x2goserver-extensions x2goserver-x2goagent
x2goserver-xsession

in order to stay with version 4.1.0.3-7+deb12u1.

So, it appears that on initial connection, even on resume, the display is set
to 800x600 and then resized to what is in the session preferences. With the
change to 800x600, KDE tries to re-arrange the windows to fit better it seems.

Why is this done instead of either setting the size to the session preferences
or preferably the size of the existing session?

[X2Go-User] Complaints about windows resizing/moved on session resume

2023-10-09 Thread Orion Poplawski
Many of our users are complaining about:

something in the EL8/X2Go/KDE? interface now just runs roughshod over
the windows you have open, between suspending and resuming sessions.
Windows are re-sided, moved, opened, closed...at random. I often
have multiple windows open and, for example, running IDL or editing
or something, and I have them placed where I want as I am testing
and debugging or writing code, I suspend / restore the session and
come back to just randomly placed, sized, opened or closed desktop.
**i don't like people mucking with my desktop** whether real
or virtual!!! The three of us mentioned to each other that we
feel like we are continually re-sizing, finding, and just spending
time counteracting what has been done to our setups.

So, what's going on what what can be done to stop it? Clients and server are
EL8. Desktop environment is KDE. We have a mix of x2goagent and x2gokdrive
sessions.

We've removed kscreen.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hi Orion.

Ah, sorry did not specify the client. The client is also AlmaLinux 8.

We're seeing this lead to a segfault in kscreen and possibly behavior where
 the x2go window resizes uncontrollably.

Re: [X2Go-User] X2Go resizing uncontrollably with KDrive

2023-10-02 Thread Ulrich Sibiller
If the client side is Windows: Might have to do with the way Windows
adds window decorations. We had an issue like that some years ago
where vcxsrv did it wrong. Since kdrive does not use an intermediate X
server it needs to handle these problems itself. Maybe try to run the
client in Windows 7 compatibility mode. Or change display zoom.

Even after removing kscreen, one user is still having issues:

The effect seems to be a bit cumulative.
First time or two after restarting x2go, no resizing.
Then like a 1- or 2-'round' of resizing and it'll stop.
Then after another few times it's up to 5 or 6...
Then at some point you get to where it just won't stop.
But restarting x2go (loosing your session) does get
it to stop. Or, start the cycle I describe above over again.

Is there some extra logging that might be useful to log screen resize requests?

Re: [X2Go-User] MFA support in X2go?

2023-09-28 Thread Ulrich Sibiller
There are so many prompts outside that we cannot include them all.
AFAIK there's generic support for unknown prompts that pops up a
window showing you the prompt (or generally spoken: the output as
received from the remote side) and letting you enter the matching
response. I am not sure when this comes up and how to trigger it. I
have seen it a few times when testing with a custom MFA at a customer
but I never managed to successfully use it. I don't know why. Maybe
some research is required here.

I would suggest to test this mechanism and make it somehow
configurable. We could e.g. add a configuration item where you can
specify the expected prompt and how to respond to it. Maybe also offer
a global configuration where you can hold the expected prompts for
multiple MFAs so you do not have to configure that on a per-connection
basis.

[X2Go-User] build X2GoServer as a user (without sudo) ?

2023-09-27 Thread Elmar Melcher
Hi,

the instructions in
https://wiki.x2go.org/doku.php/wiki:development:build-howto-linux:x2goserver
require sudo.

Is it possible to build and install x2goserver without sudo rights?

It would be ok and expected that such a x2goserver would be usable
only by the user who installed it into his /home directory, for
example under ~/.local/

Should kdrive be simulating EDID or some other output/information to help

We're seeing this lead to a segfault in kscreen and possibly behavior where
the x2go window resizes uncontrollably.

With kdrive we see a new control panel at the top of the window. Is it
possible to remove that? Thanks.

I divided the changes into 2 patches. Hope I did it right.

One concerns the change in Ghostscript.
The other one is the correction to the parsing of the conf file.

Hello Mike

Thank you for your fast response and sorry for my slow one.

It wasn't that, but your tip showed me the way.
The answer begins here:

https://git.ghostscript.com/?p=ghostpdl.git=search=HEAD=commit=setpdfwrite

Ghostscript deprecated 'setpdfwrite' in 2019 and removed it in 2021,
or version 9.54.

To solve this, I edited /etc/cups/cups-x2go.conf:

ps2pdf = /usr/bin/gs -q -dCompatibilityLevel=1.4 -dNOPAUSE -dBATCH
-dSAFER -sDEVICE=pdfwrite -sOutputFile=-
-dAutoRotatePages=/PageByPage -dAutoFilterColorImages=false
-dColorImageFilter=/FlateEncode -dPDFSETTINGS=/prepress
-dDoNumCopies -f \"%s\"

This alone should've solved my problem... yet it wasn't working :(
After many hours of self commiseration, I found that the culprit to
be a leading space in the command, in this line

my $gs_pid = open2 ($gs_out, $gs_in, $ps2pdf_cmd, @ps2pdf_args);

where $ps2pdf_cmd would translate to ' /usr/bin/gs'.

So, I had to learn just enough Perl to correct this:

if($option eq "ps2pdf")
{
$ps2pdf=$value;
$ps2pdf=~s/^\s+//; < my solution
}

Now, about sending patches... I've never done it before.

I'm not sure if just changing the default ghostscript command line,
hardcoded in the Perl script and the .conf file, is the best
solution for everyone.
And I'm not sure if the way I found to trim that leading whitespace
is the best solution.

I'm too uncertain.

Regards,
Rui Ferreira

As X2Go developers, we don't have much impact on the CUPS systemd

Hi,

I'm running X2GO client V4.1.2 on Windows 10, and trying to connect to a Linux

[X2Go-User] X2GO Client On Windows Starts and Terminates In A Few Seconds

2023-09-14 Thread Alexandra Lu (Nokia)
Hi,

I'm running X2GO client V4.1.2 on Windows 10, and trying to connect to a Linux
PC running Ubuntu 22.04. I use MATE for the Session Type, and when trying to
connect, I could see that the Linux desktop window starts then terminates in a
few seconds, and the following x2go error log is created on the Linux PC. I'm
guessing the last assert was the cause of the crash. Does anyone have any
suggestions on how to fix it?

[X2Go-User] Next Events/Upcoming X2Go and orca e.V. Sponsorship Drive - Tomorrow, 2023-09-05

2023-09-04 Thread Stefan Baur

Dear $ALL,

X2Go will be present at LinuxDay.AT in
Dornbirn, Austria on Saturday, September 30th, and also at the
IT-Kongress in Neu-Ulm, Germany, on Thursday,
November 9th, 2023.

At both events, we will have a booth where we will demo X2Go-KDrive, as
well as the HTML5Client beta and X2Go's integration into the latest
Remmina client.

At LinuxDay.AT, there will also be a talk with a live demo of how you
can run a small X2GoServer instance in the Google Cloud, for free, using
Tor (The Onion Router) to log in.

The talk at IT-Kongress will be a behind-the-scenes look regarding the
customer-driven development that led to the creation of X2Go-KDrive.

(Note that both talks will be in German, but our booth staff at both
events is fluent in German as well as in English.)

If you're planning to attend and/or are in the area, feel free to stop
by and say hi! Both events are free, though IT-Kongress requires
registration.

We are trying to cover the costs for our two volunteers/orca e.V.
members (Mihai and me) via orca e.V., the registered association that
X2Go belongs to, but for that, we will need your help in the form of
donations*.

You can find our donation pages here:
X2Go (English):

X2Go (German):

orca e.V. (English):

orca e.V. (German):

It would be really cool if you could send some $$$/€€€/£££/¥¥¥ our way,
so we can keep advocating for X2Go and free remote desktop/remote
application projects in general.
We can accept donations via PayPal, Credit Card, Direct Debit,
giropay/paydirect and wire transfer. Best of all, donations towards X2Go
and orca are usually tax deductible for German tax subjects.

Note that there is a special sponsorship drive sponsored by our funding
platform, betterplace.org:
Non-recurring donations up to 100 Euro made on Tuesday, 2023-09-05
(starting 00:00 CEST) will receive 20% on top directly from
betterplace.org. Larger donations will receive 20 Euro on top instead.
This offer is only valid until a funding pool of 12.000 Euro is
depleted. So the earlier you donate on this particular day, the higher
the chance that your donation will receive the bonus from betterplace.

Kind Regards,
Stefan Baur

bad! You can also help us by forwarding this announcement to whomever

I think the main difference between x2goclient and at least putty is
that x2goclient is managing the ssh interaction and feeding the prompts
as needed. putty is simply presenting the prompts to the user and
allowing them to interact with them. I'm not sure x2goclient has any
other way to know that the connection is waiting for more authentication
input.

x2go client has the following known prompts:

const QString SshMasterConnection::challenge_auth_code_prompts_[] = {
  "Verification code:",// GA

"One-time password (OATH) for", // OATH

Re: [X2Go-User] Wrong Shell When Connecting with X2Go

2023-08-24 Thread Joe W
I found that somebody reported this problem in bug 1434. See link below. It
says the bug was fixed in x2goserver 4.1.0.4. I am using Rocky Linux 8.8 and
the Epel repo for it just has the 4.1.0.3 version of x2goserver.

I tried the suggestion of deleting the .bash_profile and .bashrc files but bash
still used for me.

Will x2goserver be updated in the Epel repo any time soon? Is there anywhere
else to get a more recent x2goserver rpm?

https://bugs.x2go.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=1434

Thanks,
Joe

Subject: Wrong Shell When Connecting with X2Go

I have another system that I installed Rocky Linux 8.8 onto.

I created some logins and set the shell to be /usr/bin/tcsh.

I installed XFCE.

When I log in at the computer and open a terminal then the tcsh shell is being

When I connect using X2Go then open a terminal the shell is bash.

Any idea why this is happening?

Thanks,

I mean, would it not be better, more general for the X2go client to parse ANY
second factor response, as other SSH clients managed somehow to do, rather than
assume this or that particular second factor to parse?

The stock X2GoClient already has built-in support for several MFA tools.

"Verification code:", // GA

I have successfully used the first two myself, and we have customers
using this as well.
The neat thing about the first two is that they are free and don't
require a hardware token - an free app on a Smartphone is enough.
Also note that even though the first one is named after Google, it does
not require a Google account, nor does it, to my knowledge, "phone home"
to Google. Also, you can use any generic TOTP generator on the
Smartphone side for both, you do not have to use the Google
Authenticator app on the smartphone side just because you're using the
Google Authenticator plugin on the server side.
In fact, due to known security issues with it, I would recommend against
using the Google Authenticator App on the smartphone side.
However, the server-side plugin is really neat, IMO, and I would prefer
it over pam_oath. It has some nice features like providing you with a
bunch of back-up, emergency codes that you can print out and store
somewhere safe.

The one thing to remember is that you do not configure this in X2Go, but
in SSH/PAM, as this is what X2Go uses to connect.

If you can log in via SSH using your MFA key/token, you will also be
able to use it for X2Go. There will be an additional Pop-Up after you've
entered username and password where you need to enter/paste the one-time
password.

If X2GoClient doesn't show the popup, it is because the prompt (again,
you can test/verify this via commandline SSH) doesn't match any of the
known prompts listed above.

Kind Regards,
Stefan Baur

[X2Go-User] colord fix needs update for Debian >= 12 / polkit >= 120

2023-08-15 Thread Philipp Huebner

Hi all,

on Debian 12 I was getting that annoying color-manager polkit
authentication window again.

Turns out, the file
/etc/polkit-1/localauthority/10-vendor.d/x2goserver-no-colord.pkla
installed by x2goserver no longer has any effect because that backend is
obsolete in polkit >= 120 or so.

I ported the original rule to /etc/polkit-1/rules.d/color-manager.rules
with the following content:

polkit.addRule(function(action, subject) {
if (action.id.match("org.freedesktop.color-manager") &&
subject.local == false ) {
polkit.log("action=" + action);
polkit.log("subject=" + subject);
polkit.log("action '" + action.id + "' denied!");
return polkit.Result.NO;
}
});

That solved the issue for me.

Supposedly one can also install the package polkitd-pkla to get back
support for the old file, but I have not tried that approach.

Best wishes

We seem to be seeing #2 - not entirely sure if it's connected to a previous
interruption.

How do we debug this so we can fix it?

[X2Go-User] Session with a single application

2023-07-29 Thread Olaf
Hello!

How to configure a session with a single application?

"Session Type":
"Application" -> command "thunar" and/or "/usr/bin/thunar" in the right box

=> Application starts but freezes immediately (or at least doesn't respond to
input/mouse). No matter whether browser, mail, Libreoffice, pcmanfm,...

Greeting,
Olaf

[X2Go-User] Can't use ssh-agent / ECDSA key file for passwordless login [MacOS client]

2023-07-28 Thread Aaron
Hi all,

I'm having trouble getting the x2go client to authenticate with
passwordless login options other than kerberos. Specifically, I've
tried auto login (via SSH agent) and supplying the path to my OpenSSH
private key (which is an ECDSA key).

Kerberos works for me as long (as I have a valid ticket), but I want
to connect using the the ECDSA key, for reasons I'll explain below.

I suspect that the ECDSA format key is not supported by my current
client version, but if someone could confirm (or deny) that, I would
appreciate it; and if it's possible that it might work with a more up
to date client build / build against an updated LibSSH or something,
that would be good to know too. I don't currently have the wherewithal
to build my own copy of the client for MacOS, but that might provide
some incentive for me to try sometime soon.

Some background: I'm using x2go at work to connect from my Macbook Pro
to a Linux server. To connect using Kerberos, I need a valid ticket,
and to get a valid ticket, I need to first connect to the corporate
VPN. However, I don't need to connect to the VPN in order to use SSH
(from a terminal), thanks to a proxy software (a ProxyCommand in my
~/.ssh/config).

If I already have a valid Kerberos ticket, the X2go client will
connect using Kerberos, without VPN (that is, the ProxyCommand seems
to work). However, I don't want to have to connect to the VPN just to
renew my kerberos ticket when ssh itself will work using the ECDSA key
I obtain. (It will also work using my password, but that is a
temporary measure... my employer is phasing out password-based ssh in
favor of requiring U2F).

To be clear, the proxy command doesn't seem to be the issue; I
encounter the same problem when I'm connected to the VPN.

I've attached two files (with usernames and hostnames substituted),
one the output of ssh -vvv (succes) and the other the output from
/Applications/x2goclient.app/Contents/MacOS/x2goclient --debug
(failed). Both were run while connected to the VPN. The x2go session
was set up with "Try auto login" checked, Kerberos 5 unchecked, and
"Use RSA/DSA key" left blank (the log also shows that the contents of
my ssh agent were valid in the terminal). Trying after supplying a
path to my ~/.ssh/id_ecdsa file under "Use RSA/DSA key" has the same
result.

[X2Go-User] x2gokdrive doesn't like connection interruption

2023-07-22 Thread Neal Becker
client and server both fedora f38.
x2gokdriveclient-0.0.0.1-1.fc38.x86_64

I find that when connection gets interrupted 3 bad things can happen:

1. client uses 100% cpu

2. Trying to reconnect, screen starts to open and immediately closes. Then
on next attempt a new session starts, old session is lost.

3. With client connected, closing laptop lid should initiate sleep. Instead
client runs 100% cpu and machine doesn't sleep.

[X2Go-User] x2gokdrive screen goes mostly black

2023-07-20 Thread Orion Poplawski
One of our users is seeing an issue using x2gokdrive where most of the desktop
goes black. Can slowly restore by forcing things to repaint by moving windows.

Host is EL8 - x2goserver 4.1.0.4, kdrive 0.0.0.1
Client is Windows x2goclient-4.1.2.3-ba65703-kdrclient-a3134d6

KDE desktop

Any ideas what might be causing this?

[X2Go-User] FYI - dbus issues with tcsh on EL8

2023-07-17 Thread Orion Poplawski
The dbus-x11 packages' /etc/profile.d/ssh-x-forwarding.csh file will start a
new dbus-deamon that gets killed when the user disconnects from ssh causing
problems on re-connect.

I've reported the issue with a fix here:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2223420

Thankfully it seems the the dbus-x11 package dropped these scripts in later
releases.

[X2Go-User] X.Org server did not launch correctly

2023-07-01 Thread Yun-Fei Liu
Hello,

I'm using Windows 11 Home (Version 22H2, OS build 22621.1848) on a Microsoft
Surface Pro 7+. I have the latest version of X2Go client (v4.1.2.2, Qt-4.8.6)

I was able to connect to our lab server using X2Go on the week of June 19th.
However, when I tried to log in today (July 2nd), I got an error message "X.Org
server did not launch correctly after 4 tries".

There is no such problem with my other MSI laptop which is running Windows 10.
It would be great if anyone knows how to solve this error message. Thank you.
