[XFree86] fatal server error

2003-06-16 Thread jeffrey
Hi

I have the following error message when trying to open default font 'fixed'

"Error loading keymap/var/tmp/server-0.xkm"
Couldn't loadXKM keymap,falling back to pre-XKM keymap
Couldn't init font path element unix/:7100,removing from list!

So what could the problem be?

Hi,

Several times the project I'm working on has had queries regarding what are
all the libraries used in XFree. Is there, or can, we get a description of
all the modules. The ones below are the ones we are most interested. We
are interested in this so we can remove the unnecessary ones from the build
as space is quite tight.
Note that we are supporting many different screen cards, so would like to
know which modules are used with which screen cards.

Specifying a 9700 ID should work for 9800/9600.
If you don't like this hack, attached is the patch for current CVS code.
It contains 2D support for 9800/9600/M10/IGP7000/IGP9000.
It also has fixes for bug 26, 193, 342(?), 351 and a few other things.
I'll run a few more tests before sending it to Kevin.

I guess you mean http://www.schneider-digital.de/html/download_ati.html. If
you want 3D support now for the cards >= 8500, you can try them and they
should work.

Is there a change of screen, or the default root window at this stage. Is there any XEvent that I can get when this screen appears ?

[XFree86] Yellow Dog Linux 3.0 using Xfree86 4.3.0 and 3DFX VOODOO 5 videocard

2003-06-16 Thread mikey
Title: Yellow Dog Linux 3.0 using Xfree86 4.3.0 and 3DFX VOODOO 5 video card

I am trying to get Xfree86 4.3.0 as distributed with Yellow Dog Linux 3.0 to work with the tdfx (3dfx) driver for the 3dfx voodoo 5 PCI card (for macs).  I am using a mac 7300 PPC with a 300mhz G3.

Sorry – have not been able to capture the log files and the error details back to the mac.  But – the good news is that this is not an uncommon problem.  The “newbie” at this link http://archives.mandrakelinux.com/expert/2003-02/msg02362.php
Has described exactly the problem that I am experiencing.

So – whats the secret word?

Link copied below for convenience.

I have a Power Mac 6500 ("OldWorld") with 128 MB RAM, USB Card, Comm. Slot
10/100 Ethernet and in addition to the built-in video card, a 3dfx Voodoo4
with 32 MB RAM.  It's running BootX 1.2.2 with a slew of different kernels
that I've tried, all with the same results...

My Mandrake 8.2 installation (9.1rc1 wouldn't install) decided to use the
Voodoo4 for installation, but when it installed and restarted all the Linux
goodness was only on my puny ATi 2MB RAM built-in card, and X will not
start.

I have tried using the autoconfig ability of XFree86, but it provides the
same results.

I relaxed and immediately looked at config and log files, the indicate that
the Ati card and 3dfx card are both configured to be used with xinerama...

The log files indicate errors from the TDFX driver as follows:

(WW) INVALID IO ALLOCATION b:0x10 e: 0x100ff correcting
(WW) INVALID IO ALLOCATION b:0x400 e:0x4ff correcting
(EE) TDFX(0): No valid PIO address in PCI config space

Why purchase one of the most expensive possible video cards for
use in a Linux system where it is currently completely
unsupported, and merely 'might work for 2D only (or might not)'
with an ugly hack of lying about the PCI ID in the config file?

Especially when there are experts here clearly stating it isn't
supported. ATI's binary drivers on their website also don't
support this card (or didn't about 4 days ago at least), however
there is a website in (Germany?) which has ATI drivers that
support this card, although the name escapes me.

If you're looking for ATI hardware with open source driver
support that has working 3D, Radeon 8500 and 9000 are the highest
supported cards right now. The 9500Pro and 9700 Pro are
additionally supported 2D only right now.

For complete details of unequivocal truth, examine the Radeon
driver source code:

xc/programs/Xserver/hw/xfree86/drivers/ati/radeon*.[ch]

Hope this helps.

[XFree86] ATI Fire GL Z1 and dual DVI Xinerama

2003-06-16 Thread Karsten Künne
For some time I try to get the following configuration working:

ATI Fire GL Z1 with 2 Dell Ultrasharp 2000FP flatscreens with 1600x1200
resolution.

I tried the XFree driver and ATI's closed source driver but both fail in
different ways. This is on a SuSE 8.2 box with XFree 4.3 from SuSE
(unmodified). With the ATI driver I can get merged mode (one big framebuffer
with 3200x1200) to work or dual-head mode without Xinerama but as soon as I
turn on Xinerama it complains that this is not compatible with DRI or so and
fails. If I turn off DRI (and leave Xinerama on) it switches to some strange
clone mode where the second screen shows the same as the first screen. BTW,
it does the same if I turn off DRI in dual-head mode.

With the XFree driver I can't get the second screen to show anything, it stays
dark. I'll attach my XF86Config and XFree86.0.log. I tried the
"MonitorLayout" option already but apparently it's ignored. The interesting
thing is that it apparently recognizes both monitors as it reports both
serial numbers in the log file. Is there any hope I can get this to work or
do I need XFree CVS?

[XFree86] Problems with I855GM video

2003-06-16 Thread Jon Fox
I just got a Dell D400 Laptop with Intel I855GM video. I'm having
difficulty getting it to use any additional video modes beyond
640x480x8, 800x600x8, 1024x768x8, and 640x480x16. I'm running
XFree86 4.3.0. I've seen David Dawes' pages about the Xfree additions
for this chipset, and I've applied his agpgart patch to my vanilla linux
kernel (2.4.20). I've also booted up the development kernel with the
same result.

I've specified VideoRam 65000 and even more. However, trying to force
(using DefaultDepth 16) and Modes "1024x768" gives me the error below.
Dell has decided that 832k is more than enough for the console. I
can email the full logs and the full XFree86Config file (bzip2ed) to
anyone who want to take a stab at this.

Thanks,
Jon Fox/mycr0ft

[XFree86] Problems starting a ProSavage...

2003-06-16 Thread Dave Littell
Hi,

I've installed FreeBSD 4.8 on a machine and I'm now trying to get X
going. The chip is supposedly a ProSavage DDR as you can see in the
attached log file's PCI scan. (I selected the "-K" version based on Tim
Roberts' site that shows the "K" indicates an AMD processor.)
FreeBSD's startup recognizes the chip as an "S3 model 8d04", so that's
consistent with a ProSavage (again based on information on Tim Roberts'
web site).

As you can see in the log, I'm getting stomped when it goes to get the
savage driver going.

Can anyone here help me or should I direct this to Tim?

Thanks very much,
Dave

Hello,

I have purchased a new matrox p750. I have tried to make it work using:

driver=mga

and that does not work at all - I have only been successful in starting X
and working in X by using:
driver=vga

--

Now, tell me if I understand how all this works correctly.

First, the mga driver obviously just doesn't understand the new matrox
p750 (I get errors about "no devices present"). So that is why vga will
work, but "mga" will not.
Second, matrox has made a p750 linux driver available - it includes sample
xf86config lines and a linux kernel module, etc., to make it work - now I
am running on FreeBSD, so can I assume that in some amount of time,
someone will incorporate the functionality of the matrox p750 driver into
the _general_ mga driver, and when that happens I can then use the mga
driver under FreeBSD, using all of the special config lines shown on
matrox's site for Xfree ?
Or do I misunderstand how all of this works ?
I doubt you'll be able to use the special config lines for an xfree driver.
When there is an xfree driver, it'll probably work but not support all
the features of the Matrox driver (like xfree did with nvidia).
Your best bet is to bug Matrox about getting BSD support in there closed
source driver.

If I am correct, then I also wonder, has this procedure already started ?
Has someone already startd incorporating the new matrox p750 driver code
into the general mga driver ?
Thankd.
Oh, I thought p750 was Pentium 750 but you that is the name of a Matrox
graphics card (p=Parhelia, maybe).
AFAIK, xfree does not support the new Matrox cards because of no specs
(I think).
Eventually some xfree developer will reverse engineer it (like they did
for nvidia cards?).

There is a closed source driver provided by Matrox.
Go to http://matrox.com and the tech support forum
(http://matrox.com/mga/support/forum/agree.cfm).

The FreeBSD people on this list would know more about
it, but if I recall correctly, its some security issue
and you can't actually run X at some of the higher FreeBSD
security levels.

Hey everyone,

I'm looking for information on howto setup/configure a keyboard (namely a
logitech elite w/ volume, www, mail, etc. buttons) to use under X. It uses
a standard PS/2 port, so I would imagine it should be possible. I just
want to be able to setup each key to do whatever I like.

I'm more looking for a how-to with some detailed examples. Maybe this
would also have some information for mouse buttons as well?

Thank you,

Re: [XFree86] what can be done with the new matrox millenium p750?

2003-06-16 Thread Bob Lockie
On 06/16/03 13:47 Josh Brooks spoke thusly

(Hi - I tried to post this last night, but it obviously didn't make it to
the list)
I am a somewhat new xfree86 user, and am trying to use a new matrox
millenium p750 on FreeBSD 5.1. It is an AGP card, and I have two monitors
connected, both by the DVI cables.
I have installed XFree86 Version 4.3.0 from the FreeBSD ports collection.

My first step was to run:

X -configure

and then try to start the new config with:

startx -- -xf86config /root/XF86Config.new

This causes the screen to turn green momentarily, and then my monitor
loses signal.
Please note that the XF86config.new ended up with:

Driver "VESA"
BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
In the Device section.

--

So then I tried:

Driver	"mga"

and I got:

(++) Using config file: "/root/XF86config.new"
(EE) No devices detected.
Fatal server error:
no screens found
---

So, a few questions:

1) you'll note I am not attempting dual head, or anything special - I just
want to start X with my monitor and this graphics card - is this possible
with the mga driver ?
I used to have a Matrox Millenium and it worked fine with the mga driver.
I'm not using BSD and I don't have a video card on my mb...

2) if not ... what needs to be done ?
Run the BSD equivalent of the Linux utility 'lspci' to see what video
cards your OS sees.

3) do I need to make any provisions in my config file for the fact that I
am running this card on the AGP port ? Or will BusID "PCI:1:0:0" work
ok with my AGP port ?
You shouldn't need that.
My guess is that you can try it.

4) my motherboard has a built-in VGA card ... but it outputs nothing when
I have the matrox p750 in there, so ... should I worry about disabling it
in the bios anyway ? Is it interfering in any way ?
I'd disable it in the BIOS.
It shouldn't interfere but... :-(

Re: [XFree86] Sol/Sparc: XLUT MapSbusMem failure

2003-06-16 Thread Mike Russo
Using perror(), I found that both the "fb" and "x32" memory regions
don't map privately, but they do map shared. The "xlut" region does not
map as either private or shared, and in each case the mmap() error
number is EACCES (#13), "permission denied". The Solaris 8 man page for
mmap(2) mentions:

The mmap() function will fail if:

 EACCES
The fildes file descriptor is not open for read,
regardless of the protection specified, or fildes is
not open for write and PROT_WRITE was specified for a
   MAP_SHARED type mapping.

I am running as root for now, perhaps I don't have enough memory? I have
4MB of video memory, if the X server will only run in 32bpp mode it
might not be enough. I'll keep updating from CVS and checking out new
builds (this test was done with 4.3.99.6).
Thanks!!!

[XFree86] ati driver and energy saver

2003-06-16 Thread Michael Cardenas
In our testing of our latest release, which uses Xfree86 4.2.1, we
have had a number of users report a bug with the ati driver.

Apparently, when using the ati 7000 card with the ati driver in full
screen open gl mode, the monitor turns off after a few minutes. The
problem seems to go away when energy saver settings are disabled in
the kde energy saver control panel.

Are you aware of this problem? Is it fixed in 4.3.0?

Thank you,

  cardenas

Out of curiosity, what matrox card are you trying to use ? Can you give me
the U RL for this mgadrivers from the matrox's site ?

(I am hoping that it will supoort the p750)

[XFree86] what can be done with the new matrox millenium p750 ?

2003-06-16 Thread Josh Brooks

Driver "mga"

and I got:

(++) Using config file: "/root/XF86config.new"
(EE) No devices detected.

Fatal server error:
no screens found

---

So, a few questions:

1) you'll note I am not attempting dual head, or anything special - I just
want to start X with my monitor and this graphics card - is this possible
with the mga driver ?

2) if not ... what needs to be done ?

3) do I need to make any provisions in my config file for the fact that I
am running this card on the AGP port ? Or will BusID "PCI:1:0:0" work
ok with my AGP port ?

4) my motherboard has a built-in VGA card ... but it outputs nothing when
I have the matrox p750 in there, so ... should I worry about disabling it
in the bios anyway ? Is it interfering in any way ?

thanjs.

There is an app called "gtf" that ships with XFree86 4.3.
Use it. It produces very good modelines using the VESA standard.

Re: [XFree86] Linux needs to be rebooted :-( after mozilla crashes

2003-06-16 Thread Jesse Hutton
This is a know issue with Radeon video cards and Mozilla. Check their bug
database, you'll likely find an old report for this. The folks at
Mozilla, however, consider this a problem with the Radeon driver. I don't
know the specifics, but I think one solution might be to disable dri.

DGA is a full-screen-only mode. It is not a windowed mode.
The X-server is essentially switched away to another VT when in
DGA mode. It's more of an svgalib replacement.

>
> 2.) How fast is it compared to normal xlib?

Very slow. It was intended for DOS-like games such as the
original Doom and Quake which rendered in software to the framebuffer.
It requires root permissions in that mode.

>

http://www.xfree86.org/~mvojkovi/texture.tar.gz

Is an example usage, but I don't recommend using it.
There are usually better ways to do fast software rendering.
Rendering into system memory and using XShmPutImage is frequently
faster on modern systems.

Redhat system, right?

Make sure your font server is running. I think its called "xft". You
probably need to be root to restart it. Do not have redhat myself so I
can not check.

[XFree86] How to use dga2?

2003-06-16 Thread Clemens Eisserer
Hi there!

I want to extend Kaffe (a Java VM) which uses native X-funktions without an
underlaying toolkit for graphics.
I want to add support for DGA2, but I didnt find many informations about
dga2,
google showed about 10 useless results.

So, please answer me the following questions:

1.) Is it possible to turn an app into dga-mode and then continue with the
old code
(same code for drawing, events..)?

2.) How fast is it compared to normal xlib?

3.) Where can I fand tutorials and/or code samples?

Thx Clemens

Re: [XFree86] Problems starting a ProSavage...

2003-06-16 Thread Paulo Almeida
I think that happened to me, and I changed to a generic chipset, or no
chipset at all in the XF86Config file, to stop getting the error. It
still doesn't work on my computer, because the frequencies go out of
range, so now I'm wondering if it's because I don't specify the chipset.
I have an AMD too. If you write to Tim Roberts, can you post his answer
in this mailing list?

Thanks,
Paulo
Dave Littell wrote:

FreeBSD's startup recognizes the chip as an "S3 model 8d04", so that's
consistent with a ProSavage (again based on information on Tim Roberts'
web site).

[XFree86] XServer configuration problem

2003-06-16 Thread apvindia
Hi
I've installed Red Hat Linux 8.0 on a P4 with 512 MB RAM with Intel 845
on-borad graphics. Now i am unable to start X windows. I tried to configure
it with command "XFree86 - configure" but it gave some fatal error and
suggested to send the output of "scanpci -v" to this mailing list. Kindly
help me in this regard. I'm pasting the scanpci ouput below:

[XFree86] what can be done with the new matrox millenium p750 ?

2003-06-16 Thread Josh Brooks

Driver "mga"

and I got:

(++) Using config file: "/root/XF86config.new"
(EE) No devices detected.

Is it interfering in any way ?

thanjs.
