A curious side note here is privacy. I wrote to Apple asking them if,
in any way, they index or access our personal data and share those
results with any other process. They never responded (I tried a couple

Afraid I can't offer any special insight, though I would expect this to be
covered by the .Mac terms of service and/or Apple's privacy policy.

So I could selectively encrypt my data within Yojimbo and have it
protected that way.

That's correct; any items you encrypt will be protected in transit and
while stored on the .Mac servers (as well as on your Mac(s)).

For that matter, how complex (or simple) is the encryption in Yojimbo
(including any backdoors). ;-)

Yojimbo uses AES-256, which is a strong, system-provided encryption
mechanism, to protect item content, and there are no backdoors nor reset
mechanisms.

So, if your dog eats the PostIt that has your Yojimbo password, we're sorry
but we won't be able to help... :-)

[ANN] moving Yojimbo-Talk to Google Groups!

2008-05-29 Thread Patrick Woolsey
Good afternoon folks,

We're currently in the process of moving all our product discussion lists
to Google Groups.

Next weekend (June 7/8), we will shut this list down and all traffic will
be on the 'Yojimbo Talk' Google Group. We hope that you'll take a moment to
subscribe and join us there!

  http://groups.google.com/group/yojimbo-talk

Please note that historical archives of this list are not currently
available through the Google group. We're investigating ways to get the
archives up to Google. In the meantime, they remain available via
http://www.listsearch.com/TextWrangler/ at the pleasure of LassoSoft,
whose hosting of the archives these many years we greatly appreciate.

I'm interested in replicating my Yojimbo database so I can use it

wonder if that's simply a sync of files to the iDisk (copying), and how
would you resolve differences if, say, you do writes in one location and
not the other?

Depending on how that works, I wonder if it would be possible to bypass
.mac dependency and set up something like rsync or unison to replicate
via SSH to an external location.

It is not; please see:

I'm using The Missing Sync for my Treo 650 and Macbook (leopard). Not
sure if this is a question for here or over at Mark/Space, but I'm
wondering what types of records in Yojimbo are synced? All ?
Like other users, I've also experienced interminable syncs. I'm assuming
that's due to the large items in yojimbo, such as photos and web
archives. And so was wondering if it were possible to set the type of
records to be synced.

The Missing Sync only syncs notes between Yojimbo and the device. Missing
Sync can either sync all notes, or just the notes in selected manual
collections, depending on how you configure it.

As for Missing Sync's behavior, I regret we can't assist there (beyond
recommending that you use the latest version); please contact the folks at
Mark/Space.

Yojimbo is built on CoreData, the same underlying technology as

recommends excluding Aperture data from Time Machine backups,
 and managing Aperture backups independently:

 http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306853

For the moment, we are recommending the same thing.

The document states now that the problems are fixed with 10.5.2 for
Aperture -- does this apply to Yojimbo as well?

The cited change in 10.5.2 only resolves this issue for Aperture; I regret
it does not affect other applications which use CoreData nor our prior

[admin] Re: Yojimbo and 10.5.2

2008-02-13 Thread Patrick Woolsey
Good morning folks,

The 10.5.2 update includes a change to Core Data (the system data storage
service that Yojimbo uses) which requires SQLite to perform a rebuild of
any existing data stores (created on OS versions prior to 10.5.2).
Unfortunately, for large data stores this process can take a while, and
there's no up-front feedback as to what is happening.

Please just let Yojimbo run and *do not* force quit it; once the rebuild is
finished, Yojimbo will respond normally again.

My problem is when I paste formatted text into a plain text note.
Doing this in TextEdit and other text editors I use begets plain
text, which is what I want. In order to do this in Yojimbo, I have to
press Shift-Alt-Command-V (Paste And Match Style), which may be
Apple's punishment for trying to use keyboard commands. I'd like to
get a behavior like what I have in TextEdit, where I can paste in
text and remove the formatting. I couldn't find a preference pane
that dealt with this. Any ideas?

Although there's no direct option to paste plain text, you can apply
Format - Remove Formatting subsequently to get the same effect.

(FWIW, since I often need to 'paste plain text' in different apps, I've set
up a Keyboard Maestro action mapped to Cmd-Shift-V, but there are plenty of
other ways to skin the same beast :-), e.g. Plain Clip.app, probably
QuickSilver or LaunchBar, or any of the autotyper tools like TextExpander
or TypeIt4Me with a plain-text shortcut for the clipboard contents.)

My last 3 Emails for support of my issues have gone unanswered over a
period of two weeks. I still have issues that make Yojimbo unusable for
me. Synching doesn't via .Mac doesn't even begin to work, although I've
used the Terminal commands I was given and reset/merged the data. Items I
delete still show up in the
usernameLibraryCachesMetadatacom.barebones.yojimbo folder
Sometimes when I click on a Library item, it doesn't show up in the viewer
window - the last item viewed stays there and refuses to budge.
Seems like tech support gives you an attempt or two, then gives up on you.

I apologize to Don for the delays in getting back to him.

Although we never give up on addressing reported issues, because of the

2007-05-04 Thread Patrick Woolsey
VLCofA [EMAIL PROTECTED] sez:

I've tried out many of the other note-grabbing programs, like SOHO
Notes and Journler and Eagle Filer. Each of them requires only that
you SELECT the text and invoke its grab command. This makes me
wonder why Yojimbo, which I prefer in every other way, requires that
we SELECT then COPY the text before we grab it. Any thoughts?

Just about every application supports copying, whereas there are many
commonly-used apps which don't support getting the selected text.

Thus, Yojimbo uses the clipboard to make collecting data as consistent and
reliable as possible.

Re: Feature Request: or-condition in Tag collections

2007-04-08 Thread Patrick Woolsey
Niels Kobschätzki [EMAIL PROTECTED] sez:

Right now tag-collections only have an and-condition (matches all
of these tags), I'd like to see an or-condition (can match any of
these tags).

As we've mentioned before :-), we will be adding support for user-definable
smart collections in a future version, and those will allow such criteria.

Tag collections in their current form won't change, so that we can add
support for tagging items via drag drop in future.

[admin] Re: Application reviews by Melodie Neal

2007-04-04 Thread Patrick Woolsey
Before this already-skeletal equine is reduced to dust :-), may I
recommend referring to the extensive discussions about nested folders
in the list archives, perusal of which also won't fill up everyone
else's mailbox... :-).

Re: Upgrade Info?

2007-03-19 Thread Patrick Woolsey
Richard Johnston [EMAIL PROTECTED] sez:

Does anyone know if the next major upgrade will be free for
registered users. I don't know what Bare Bones' policy is in this
regard. If something is imminent - perhaps to coincide with Leopard I
would rather wait but it will be hard to do without it.

Although we cannot speculate about timing or other details for any future
releases, you needn't be concerned about Leopard compatibility; if
necessary, we will provide an update for all current customers.

[ANN] Yojimbo 1.4.2 now available

2007-03-14 Thread Patrick Woolsey
Good afternoon all,

We have just released Yojimbo 1.4.2.

This is a focused update to work around the issue in last week's QuickTime
7.1.5 release which would cause a crash during playback of Yojimbo's Quick
Start movie.

As usual, you can get the update from:
