Title: Re: [Zappa-List] Re: US elections and Florida - dumb all overagain

But Ralph has never expected to win, so whether he can get anything done is not a deal-breaking matter. He's campaigning to bring attention to issues that he thinks are too important to ignore. He did say in direct response to the question a couple days ago whether he would be effective in office, however hypothetically, that he would be, claiming he's been in D.C. for forty years and knows how to generate support for an issue.
I do not believe Frank would be a Nader man, incidentally.
Mark

FZ once said, If you can't work within the system for change, you're just playing with yourself until the next new face comes along. Our boy Ralph has no ties within a system he's been fucking with for the last 40 years.
Does that comment bring this on topic?

I read yesterday that the Republican beast-machine in Michiganis engaged in a "voter suppression" operation, seeing how it is a 'swing' state. Obviously, by "suppresion" they mean preventing - by all sorts of foul and diabolical means - Blacks, Hispanics, lefties, Democrats, etc from voting at all. Maybe time to take to the lifeboats or escape pod, with your i-Pod of Zappa music?

Well I don't know all the details yet
but the Democratic party is famous for committing voter fraud the old
fashioned way. By that I mean registering whole cemeteries full of people to
vote and so on. It was reported yesterday that one county had reached 104% voter
registration with the vast majority of the newly registered being Democrats.
(For anyone not familiar with American voter percentages that's a damn high
percentage) My point is that now days when something like this is detected the
guilty ones will usually cry voter suppression. I'm not saying the Repub's are
innocent ether. I just read this article explaining a dirty trick one or more of
them used that could be considered suppression of deadbeatvoting.

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=storycid=816e=7u=/ap/20041029/ap_on_el_pr/voter_scam
The whole two party system is corrupt
and needs an overhaul in my opinion. Are any of you guy's aware of the
Libertarian party? They've been working for years to try to get people into the
congress and even more local positions. The idea being that by the time they
might actually get a presidential candidate elected he will have some support to
get things done. They have of course been fighting a very entrenched two party
system the whole way with only minimal success.
http://www.lp.org/
They are to the Republicans what
Nader is to the Democrats. They are saying their guy (Badnerik) will make the
difference in New Mexico giving the win to Kerry. I find most of their positions
easier to endorse than ether of the two big parties. To me they take what's best
from both and leave out what's wrong with both. Like Nader they don't have a
hope in hell in the presidential election of course.

[Zappa-List] Re: US elections and Florida - dumb all overagain

2004-10-30 Thread Shaun Toole

Ooo, lots of politics. Frank would be proud.

It's important to vote - 2000 proved that. Your vote does count (when it's
counted, that is).

Take a look at the DVD Unprecedented about the 2000 election, and the
crooked on-goings in Florida. If you weren't convinced the Bushes were
criminals before you watch it, you will be afterward. Impeach Bush NOW!

I'm for Nader, but he's not on the ballot in Texas, so I can't vote for him.
And I wouldn't anyway, since I think it would just dilute the Kerry (AKA
anti-Bush) vote. It's most important to get rid of Bush NOW, reclaim our
international friendships, and take a different approach in Iraq. But as for
the way the country works, through Congress and the Supreme Court, I don't
know how much either major party will allow to change, because it fucks with
their power base too much.

Check out the definition of the term fascist and see if it doesn't fit our
government today. This is from dictionary.com:

A system of government marked by centralization of authority under a
dictator, stringent socioeconomic controls, suppression of the opposition
through terror and censorship, and typically a policy of belligerent
nationalism and racism.

Sound familiar?

And check out Thom Hartmann, who I first heard of on the Unprecedented DVD
extras. http://www.thomhartmann.com/ Here's a quote from one of his
articles, The Ghost of Vice President Wallace Warns: 'It Can Happen Here.'
http://www.commondreams.org/views04/0719-15.htm Wallace was Roosevelt's Vice
President from 1941-45.

The really dangerous American fascists, Wallace wrote, are not those who
are hooked up directly or indirectly with the Axis. The FBI has its finger
on those. The dangerous American fascist is the man who wants to do in the
United States in an American way what Hitler did in Germany in a Prussian
way. The American fascist would prefer not to use violence. His method is to
poison the channels of public information. With a fascist the problem is
never how best to present the truth to the public but how best to use the
news to deceive the public into giving the fascist and his group more money
or more power.

So, you think it can't happen here?

smt

Danny,

Have you seen the PKD documentary? It's fairly
redundant if you've read the biography "Divine Invasions" but the interviews
with those who knew him were worth seeing.

Seems to be the case that more often than not, it's
the artists who reflect back accurately what a given culture or society is
doing, and where it's at in its development.
Frank wrote about a secret underground base in
"Thingfish" and lo and behold later it was revealed that it wasn't just a
product of his imagination. Not to mention he saw compact discs and music
downloading twenty years before this arrived.

you seen the PKD documentary? It's fairly redundant if you've read the
biography "Divine Invasions" but the interviews with those who knew him

to be the case that more often than not, it's the artists who reflect back
accurately what a given culture or society is doing, and where it's at
in its development.Frank
wrote about a secret underground base in "Thingfish" and lo and behold
later it was revealed that it wasn't just a product of his imagination.
Not to mention he saw compact discs and music downloading twenty years

Yep!
I can relate to that. I recently read again (after about a 15 year absence!!),
"The Simulacra" and I was quite astonished/knocked-back by its insights/prescience.
And, yes, "Radio Free Albemouth" is a great novel, especialy as - IF I
recall correctly - PKD 'assimilates' his experince of being monitored/investigated
by the 'dark forces' of the FBI/CIA. PKD, in the lates 1960s, attended
a few meetings of the Communist Party of the United States of America,
which was enjoying a mini-renaissance under the 'fire' of people like Angela
Davies (especally in California, PKD's base). He eventually 'drifted' away,
but was classified as a Communist Party sympathiser/'fellow-traveller,
and 'monitored' day and night' by YOU-KNOW-WHO. At one stage, it was fairly
clear that PKD's phone was being TAPPED by the FBI/CIA, but almost everybody
- understandably in some ways, given his drugs-intake - dismissed him for
being 'paranoid'. We now know, of course, and it has been since 'officially'
confessed, that his phone WAS tapped by the FBI/CIA, and his apartment
WAS broken into, and burgled, by FBI/CIA shits looking for 'subversive/communist'
material.Meanwhile, back in Florida ...DANNY

[Zappa-List] Who do you really think will win? Gamble on the election?

2004-10-30 Thread Jim L

I've been hearing about places that actually take bets on the outcome of the
US presidential election. So I got to thinking about how I would bet if cold
hard cash was on the line. What do you guy's think? Regardless of who you want
to win or what you think would be best for the world, what if you had a really
large amount of cash riding on the outcome? Who would you put your money on to
win?

LOL! Glad you liked that, SOFA. No Zappa related stuff, but some commissioned portraits. Did a couple graphite drawings of Malcolm X a while back. I need to get back into it! I've always wanted to do an FZ shirt that was a more serious portrait but I fear the ZFT Litigation Squad. Maybe a scratchboard drawing. That stuff is a blast! Still surprised no issue has been taken with the caricature shirts, frankly. (Pun intended.)
