Further, I cannot compile community driver on 2.6.19-1 with Debian etch,

that is unbelievable disturbing, even if it happens only every few days.

I am thankful for all pointers to what I shall do, to have it working

Armando,
I have the same adapter, and it works fine for me using Uli's zd1211.git
tree. I don't use the in-kernel driver as it is missing some of the
available fixes and improvements.

Will

Dear William,

can you let me know if you use kernel from kernel.org, let me know the
version, I will download and use the same version like you, and let me
know where do I get the zd1211 driver you use. I don't know Uli and I
don't find definition for Uli's zd1211.git tree, you get idea?
However, I can compile kernel if I know which one and I can add patches
if I know where they are. You have that little data for me?

I have the same adapter, and it works fine for me using Uli's zd1211.git
tree. I don't use the in-kernel driver as it is missing some of the

It's probably a distro bug. Turn off your configuration utilities and
configure the interface by hand, it will probably start working.

P.S. I don't recommend you use the git tree as suggested by William, it
has some known issues with most ZD1211 hardware. 2.6.19.1 contains a
mostly-good zd1211rw, be sure to switch to 2.6.19.2 when it appears though.

Dear Daniel,

I have tried zd1211rw from 2.6.19-1 and I did not get it working,
although the kernel has all other modules and configurations like 2.6.15
I am using now with extra driver. It says it cannot bring interface up,
further I have no scanning possibilities with zd1211rw. And my 2.6.15 is
freezing all work from time, so I had numerous reboots and cannot even
get that one working every time. My hardware is in the subject of this
message.

Is 2.6.19-2 or other kernel version better with the driver?

If you were using ZD1211 hardware on 2.6.15 then you were using a
different driver so you cannot make that comparison.

Turn off all configuration agents, and configure the interface manually.
If that doesn't work, list every command you are running plus the error
messages so that someone can attempt to help you.

Be sure to read the driver homepage as well, it answers many common
questions. http://zd1211.ath.cx/wiki/DriverRewrite

Is 2.6.19-2 or other kernel version better with the driver?

2.6.19.2 is not out yet but will not solve any of the problems you have
described.

You may be hitting an issue with debian scripts and there is nothing
wrong with the driver, I run Unbuntu and it had the script problem.

See if this works:
ifconfig eth2 down
ifconfig eth2 up
ifup eth2

If it does, then the ifup script for wireless needs to have this added:
ifconfig $1 up
