Okay, I can push the the button on the front of the
computer, and it will open and close fine, free of...
something. And when I put a CD into the drive and
close it, I can hear it faintly spinning
The CD-ROM drive doesn't seem to work. It opens and
closes but the computer wont open it. Is there some
way to fix this?

Do you mean that dragging a mounted CD-ROM disk icon
from
the desktop to the trash won't open the drive?
I mean the drive icon does not even appear on the
desktop at all.

I'm not sure 8.6 came as full install on cd, it might
have for later machines. If you have or can get an 8.5 cd

Hi Thomas
I have a 6200 basically the same only not all in one.
Mine I bought NEW in 1995 it came with OS 7.5.3.
I have had no problems upgrading to OS 9.1 the last it is possible to
load
it is slow but workable.
The was a problem on earlier models regarding the MOBO. Apple had a
repair
Other than the fact that the computer whines over the
ROM, it seems to work fine, so no one tell me to go
run and buy a new Mac.
There are really only two problems that are bugging
me.
First, the CD ROM drive doesn't seem to work. It
opens, makes the spinny noise, and then nothing. Any
tips

has already repaired.
Apple refers to it as the Repair Extension Program if you search
their support website:

I believe it was 7.5.1. I had a late 6300 it shipped with
7.5.1. I had nothing but probs when
First thing you should probably do is to make sure you actually have a ROM
problem. Often, when the motherboard battery is going, it can appear that
there is a ROM problem when there really isn't. So I would replace the
motherboard battery and see if you still have the same problem.

Not sure what you mean by get the extensions to work.
As Kevin said it's likely a battery problem.
The other thing I would do is to download install the free
8.0 to 8.1 update from Apple site.
iirc 8.1 was much more stable on anything.
