Can Anyone tell me where I can find information on Tivoli's stance on
backing up Network Appliance. I know they say it will back it up using
version 4 and NDMP but only full volume backups. What about futures?
Is there anyone out there successfully backing up Network Appliances
attached to NT?
Hi:
Yes, I was wondering if tivoli software features such as flashcopy were supported on
ESS, but not EMC disk...this like that. Basicly, are there any advantages /
disadvantages to the AIX/TSM / Tivoli/ ESS combination in contrast to the the
AIX/TSM/Tivoli/EMC combination.

There was a problem with the fix for IC32163... it wasn't complete. This
affects the NT-based platforms only, so the 4.2.1.16 fix for 9X-based
platforms is still available.
The fix has since been completed, and a replacement patch, 4.2.1.18, is
expected to be available by early next week.
Flashcopy is NOT a Tivoli product. It is a feature of the ESS. There are TDP
agents for both ESS using Flashcopy and EMC using TimeFinder, but only in
support of Oracle. But scripting some flashcopy tasks to create copy LUNs
and bring them online to your backup server wouldn't be too hard to do.
Does anyone know why the 4.2.1.16 client for NT\2000\XP (IP22373_16) has
been pulled from the Tivoli FTP site? (The Win9x PTF 16 is still there.)
I had downloaded this a few weeks ago and was testing it out for Windows
2000 clients. It was looking pretty good - but now I am leary to roll it

The AIX/EMC Timefinder combination is not supported today for SAP R/3 and
Oracle RMAN. But consider this. The cost of the feature to do this is very
expensive regardless of the backup vendor or the disk vendor. Sounds like

Hi there,
Does anyone know the theoretical maximum number of entries that can be
added to the include/exclude file?
Also, should the client startup speed be affected by the size of the
include/exclude file?
Many thanks.

Normally only the log filling up will cause a crash.
Have you restarted the server in CONSOLE mode?
Instead of starting rc.adsmserv, CD into the server directory and start it
this way: ./dsmserv
That way instead of dsmserv starting in QUIET mode, it will be running in
your current AIX
Mountretention only looks at idle tapes.
A process/session requesting a tape should normally take over a tape resource
if it's idle, regardless.
This is a possible issue of the 8 legged variety.
Cheers, Suad

Thanks. Danny Miles sent me a message yesterday suggesting the same
thing; indeed, it was the recovery log filling up that caused the crash.
The database was not backing up due to the fact that it could not find a
scratch tape; although there were scratch tapes labelled in ADSM, the
3590 library
I agree, the best solution, if you can, is to just leave the existing data
where it is.
The other solutions are messy.
The problem with MOVE DATA is that you can't do it by client, but by volume.

That's usually indicative of a hardware error. If you're in AIX run the
errpt -a command (pipe it to more) and have a look, and then call support. I
think it's likely a hardware failure.

Was there any problems doing a DEFINE LIBRARY?. I have a ESL9326DX tape

Two things to try:
Set the robot arm on its own SCSI connection. (By default the arm and

Try changing your robotic arm to scsi ID 2 on the library.
If you know which tapes contain the data from the client of interest,
can you MOVE DATA for those volumes to a collocated storage pool?
Then MOVE DATA again on the different sets of collocated volumes to
