[android-developers] Re: Android is worst os mobile is this true

Let's assume that 3.x is not suitable for mobile phones.

If Google were to release 3.x you can take your pick of the available
3rd world Asian countries that would be putting 3.x in shitty low-end

Result: Bad-will against Google for putting out such a horrible

[android-developers] Webview weird redirect

2011-09-22 Thread yringel
Hey,

I've created a WebView, and given him an Open ID url (from Google /
Yahoo Open ID).
For some reason, after entering the user details, the view redirects
to my site behind the scenes -
I couldn't catch the redirect in any method - onPageStarted /
shouldOverrideUrlLoading and all the other WebViewClient methods (I
also tried WebChromeClient although its not related).
I can see the redirect happen through a tcpdump, and also a log from
my server (which the Open ID redirect to).

Is there a reason why the WebView make the redirect?

Some of my thoughts, which I couldn't find answers to:
- Is he checking the url, and does the redirect because of a redirect
parameter in the url?
- Should I not load the url in the onCreate of the activity?
- I'm also cleaning the cookies before entering the URL (in order to
give the user the option to log into another account),
does it make any change to the WebView?

Thanks a lot,
Yiftach

Re: [android-developers] parcelable again: passing object BACK through activity stack

2011-09-22 Thread John Goche
Yes, the advice is indeed very good.

1. For the SQLite database bit, I think if parcelable is better than
serializable then
can I simplyparcel my nested object and write it as a row to the
database?
   I think SQLite is going to be faster than shared preferences.

2. However at this point I am wondering what the difference is
in using onActivityResult versus simply coding onRestart like so:

  @Override
  protected void onRestart() {

// should be returning from activity

   if (this.hasPushedActivityB) {
 foo();
   } else {
 bar();
  }
}

// further down

this.hasPushedActivityB = true;

// start new intent

startActivity(new Intent(...));

//...

private boolean hasPushedActivityB;

Anything wrong with this alternative approach?

--

3. I will look at result receiver even though I have used
a Globals class annotated with each parameter that needs
to be passed from screen to screen. Not sure, maybe using
result receiver is beter.

Thanks,

John Goche

 1. Try to avoid Serializable. It is very slow compared to Parcelable.
 2. Take a look at startActivityForResult and onActivityResult.
 3. If you reeeaaally need to update activity A about events from activity
 B, consider putting your own subclass of ResultReceiver in the Intent's
 'extras'. Then activity B can call 'send(...)' on that ResultReceiver and
 this will be received in activity A as an 'onReceiveResult(...)' call-back.

 You may want to elaborate - I for one do not follow. Particularly it goes
 in for a short while.

OK, when I first click on one of the EditText text box the soft keyboard
pops up underneath and
makes it lose the focus and the cursor. Then I have to click on it once
again for the text box to be
highlighted with an orange border within its row and then once again for the
cursor to appear inside the
text box. Then as soon as I start to type some white window appears on top
of the soft keyboard with
text inside it, suggesting a word to autocomplete. This pushes my UI upward
and the text edit loses
focus, losing the text I wrote inside it.

Any ideas what is causing this?

John Goche

The API is declared in bitmap.h. You will have to learn how to use it

You will have to directly handle all PCM audio data flowing into any
AudioTrack objects you are using for ouput, mix them in real time, and
output them where they can be played back again or later processed.
You will not be able to use MediaPlayer, if that's what you were
hoping. You will have to provide and handle the raw PCM.

[android-developers] How to Make Seekbar thumb invisible when playback finishes

2011-09-22 Thread ganesh
Hi All,

I am developing a media player with SeekBar controls.
Is there any way hide the seekbar thumb and seekbar progress when the
playback stopped/finished.
In windows media player and in winamp, the seekbar progress and thumb
disappears when playback finishes.
same thing I wanted on my media player also.

I think, it can be done by setting transparent drawable for the
seekbar thumb. But, I don know much about drawable.

Could anybody provide some pointers to achieve this.

Thanks,
Ganesh

 No, not unless your device is rooted, which you can't assume in general.

 Why do you need access to this folder? (I mean, you can't get access
 to write it, but maybe someone could suggest something you could do
 instead.)

Hi

Checkout this link
http://developer.android.com/resources/articles/drawable-mutations.html

Something like this should help you:

SeekBar seekBar = new SeekBar(this);
Drawable thumb = getResources().getDrawable(R.drawable.icon);
seekBar.setThumb(thumb);
thumb.mutate().setAlpha(0);

[android-developers] Right way to format date with strings like today, yesterday, tomorrow etc

I have a date textview. And my textview holds a date string like
2011.09.17. Well I still do want to have that but I also want to add
some more user friendly info for some specific dates like today or
yesterday. For example if today is 2011.09.17 I want my textview to
have value of yesterday instead 2011.09.16 and today instead
2011.09.17.

well I already managed to do this :), but in the ugly way :(. I do
this with a lot of 'if-than' which is really uglly and what ever I
want to add some new rule like if the date is older than one year I
want to put string like last year or so I really need to add ugly
logic.

My question is is there a nicer way to do this ? is there something
like design pattern for this ? What is the recommended way to do
this ? I am sure that many people have encounter this kind of problems

if there some bather approach than thousand of ifs ? if not thanks any
way at least I will stop searching for bather solution

any suggestions , snippet or so will be appreciated

[android-developers] HttpHostConnectException

2011-09-22 Thread Azade
Hi,

I am working on an Android application that calls a Web Service
(installed on a remote host) using HttpClient.

My application can access the Web Service successfully when runs on
the emulator but when I upload it on the device and run it, it throws
HttpHostConnectException: Connection to http://remote_host:8080
refused at httpClient.execute().

Actually, I have recently changed the WiFi network that my device is
used to get connected to the Web Service. With the previous WiFi
network my application ran successfully.

Does anyone have any idea that what would be the cause of this
problem?

Thanks

 You didn't provide much information, but if you set the notification and
 never cancel it, well, it's not going away.
 This could happen if you set the notification in an Activity and then it's
 finished() or if you set it in a Service and it completes and exits.

 The current developer phone is the Nexus S, but it's an open question
 whether you really want to get one. The Nexus S is always closest to the
 bleeding edge of the phone operating system. The rest of the market,
 however, is still pretty far behind (I think something like 60% still
 runs Android 2.2, and if you look at Verizon's stable of phones, very
 few are 2.2). So if you're developing for mass consumption it might be
 better to get something a bit more retro.

 That's not entirely true. Motorola phones are still on top of their

 the newest updates in a timely manner if you plan on using them

Hi,

I'm new to android and having problems with animations. I have to

fine. The problem comes when i have to pinch zoom the image view. I'm
scaling the layout both x and y to 1.25. On the scaled layout i have
to pinch zoom the image-view. when i do pinch zoom the image-view is
not zooming to the scaled value, it is zooming upto the layout values
defined in the XML.
Can any one help me in fixing this issue.

Thanks in advance.

[android-developers] Regarding Internet Socket Listener

I did some research and found that we have listener for dataActivity()

listener method will get called), But listener method will be called
continuously if we use the Internet continuously. Thats why I am
looking for Socket open/closed listener.

[android-developers] Re: How to add a ViewFlipper to the layout?

2011-09-22 Thread MobileVisuals

called on any of the activities. It crashes on my Samsung Galaxy

crashes there. The previous version based on ViewFlipper never
crashed, even on the Samsung device.

Maybe the crashes are caused by the threads? I have set the priorities
to MIN_PRIORITY. I call on yield() on the 2d thread for every
onResume() and onPause() call to the 2d activity. I call on yield()
on the 3d thread for every onResume() and onPause() call to the 3d

Make the LunarView be a child element of your ViewFlipper, and get rid
of the Java code to try adding it to the ViewFlipper, and you will be
set.

Here are some projects demonstrating the use of a ViewFlipper:

Probably :) DateUtils[1] does something similar you might want to look
at the implementation for hints. It really depends how sophisticated
you need it to be: if it's just today/yesterday a few if's would suffice.

[android-developers] How to handle Screen dim for android widget

2011-09-22 Thread Ashraful Alam
Can anybody help please how could be handle the Screen dim so that
widget will not update at that time. Its keeps the Screen on all the
time.

I could handle the Screen OFF and Screen On Intents and check it in
BroadcastReceiver not to update the widget while screen is OFF. But
there is no intent for Screen dim.

Thanks in advance.

[android-developers] Re: how to implement ffmpeg video codec for video player +android

2011-09-22 Thread frak
This helped me a lot...

https://github.com/guardianproject/android-ffmpeg

This is not an easy path you have chosen however - I found cross-
compiling to be very tricky to get going on my mac. May the force be
with you...

[android-developers] [android][error] java.lang.exceptionInInitializerError

2011-09-22 Thread onionbread
Hi,

I'm new to android development but I have background in C++ and a bit
of java. I'm trying to run a game in Samsung Galaxy S but it crash.
When I check the error message from ddms, it shows:

FATAL EXCEPTION: main
 java.lang.ExceptionInInitializerError
  at java.lang.Class.newInstanceImpl(Native Method)
  at java.lang.Class.newInstance(Class.java:1429)
  ...
 and so on

What I want to know is, what exactly is the meaning of this error,
does it crash during an initialization? If yes, is the location in the
c main file or in java file?

I read some information on android developer's reference (http://
developer.android.com/reference/java/lang/
ExceptionInInitializerError.html#ExceptionInInitializerError())
But, honestly, I still don't get it.

I tried google this error message but couldn't find the answer I'm
looking for.

Any explanation on this error will be much appreciated.
Thank you very much. :)

[android-developers] Hear DTMF tones during phone call

2011-09-22 Thread Francesco
I'm able to send DTMF tones across a phone call executing the code

Intent callIntent = new Intent(Intent.ACTION_CALL);
callIntent.setData(Uri.parse(tel: + telNumber + , +
otherNumbers));
startActivity(callIntent);

Testing the code on a real device I don't hear the tones after the
call connection.

How can I obtain this?

Thank you

[android-developers] How to determine if device is_tablet

Currently I determine if a device is a tablet by checking screen size.
If size X then = tablet.

Is there a better or more robust way to determine a device is a
tablet?

http://source.android.com is where the firmware resides. I doubt you
can build it right now following the instructions on that site, due to
the ongoing git repository downtime stemming from the kernel.org hack.

Once you have succeeded in building a stock firmware and getting it
running on your target device, you can start researching how to add
your desired keylogging/taplogging features to it -- there are Google
Groups on the Community tab of that site that may be relevant for you.

This whole process would take several developer months, if I had to guess.

[android-developers] How to write NFC-V (ISO15693) tags on Nexus S?

2011-09-22 Thread Giovanni
Hello everybody,
I'm trying to write a RFID tag on a Nexus S (android 2.3.4) using the
NFC-V technology. AFAIK, this is done sending raw ISO15693 commands to
the tag using the method android.nfc.tech.NfcV.transceive().

Unfortunately, calling transceive with a write single block command
(0x21) invariably leads to a:
java.io.IOException: transceive failed
without further information (no inner stack trace or logging info)

Both read multiple tags (0x22) and stay quiet (0x02) work
flawlessly. I'm sure the tag is writable, since other devices can
update it. I tried both addressed and un-addressed mode, option flag
set/unset, high/low data rate, and also write multiple tags (0x24),
but had no success.

Has anyone succeded in writing ISO15693 tags on the Nexus S? Any help
would be really appreciated.

Thank you!
Giovanni

[android-developers] FragmentPager Scrolling

2011-09-22 Thread Eric Carman
Using the compatibility library with the Fragment Pager Support
example, I'm noticing some odd behavior in the scrolling.

To reproduce:

1. Run the sample FragmentPagerSupport (v4)
2. From Fragment #1 scroll up and down using the dpad or trackball.
  - This works as expected.
3. Swipe to move to Fragment #2.
4. Scroll up and down using the dpad or trackball.

Nothing appears to happen. However, you are actually scrolling on
Fragment #1. Not the visible fragment. In fact, you can use the left/
right arrows (trackball roll left/right) to move the focus to the
offscreen fragments and scroll around on those.

If you connect an item click listener to the lists and display a toast
message, you will see that while scrolling on the off-screen
fragments, pressing the dpad-center or trackball, you will trigger the
click response for that offscreen list item.

I noticed this in my own application and confirmed with the sample
app.

Is there any way around this? Can we restrict focus/scrolling only to
the onscreen fragment?

Thank you.

Best Regards,
Eric

 I read some information on android developer's reference (http://

 But, honestly, I still don't get it.

 I tried google this error message but couldn't find the answer I'm

Re: [android-developers] FragmentPager Scrolling

2011-09-22 Thread Mark Murphy
Manually, that's probably a matter of:

-- setting the focus when you switch pages
-- using android:nextFocusDown and kin on your widgets to control how
the focus switches

(note that I haven't used the pager component yet, so the above advice
is an educated guess)

However, bear in mind that not everybody uses touchscreens. If you
make it impossible to navigate through all fragments with the pointing
device, you will alienate those users.

[android-developers] Native Executable write privileges

2011-09-22 Thread Michael Thiessen
I'm working on an app that uses FFmpeg to encode camera data, and I
have successfully compiled and run FFmpeg on my android phone, In fact
I start FFmpeg as a process inside my activity and feed it over
stdin.

However, I can't find a way to allow FFmpeg to write to any place on
the file system. Are there any unrestricted folders for native
applications? Can I somehow give the process write privileges
somewhere on the filesystem? Even if it's a temp location that would
be fine, as I could read the file in my activity and re-write it
wherever it needs to go.

Thank you for any help.

[android-developers] Real-time timer on Android

2011-09-22 Thread Heidi Zhou Nolan
!n what way that I can have a real-time timer (at 20 - 40 milliseconds
level) for task scheduling on Android?

Currently I am using Java.util.timer for my real-time application?
However, the timer is missing firing when garbage collection is
running or other other stuff. The description on java.util.timer says
this class does not offer guarantees about the real-time nature of
task scheduling.. Then, which class that I should use on Android
then? Or are there any other approach to have a real-time guarantee
timer on Android?

Thank you in advance for your help.

Heidi

[android-developers] Multicast Receive

2011-09-22 Thread Jasleen Kaur
We have been trying to write a rtsp streaming client for Android
platform in Eclispe.
we are able to do the handshaking, i.e Describe, Setup, Play requests
have been sucessfully communicated.
Now i have chosen to receive the Multicast UDP data packets after PLAY
command.

The problem is that I am unable to receive the UDP multicast data...in
the emulator as well as Android device, but am able to receive the UDP
packets in a java based app and a .Net based app.

   wifi =
(WifiManager) getSystemService(getApplicationContext().WIFI_SERVICE);
   mLock =
wifi.createMulticastLock(mylock);

mLock.setReferenceCounted(true);

mLock.acquire();

  MulticastSocket
sock;

  InetAddress sessAddr =
InetAddress.getByName(234.2.128.12);
  sock = new
MulticastSocket(1100);  //
48180);

  byte b = 64;
  sock.setTTL(b);
  sock.joinGroup(sessAddr);

  byte[] byData = new
byte[500];
  DatagramPacket pack = new
DatagramPacket(byData, 500);

  sock.receive(pack);

Plus i have added the following tags to the manifest

uses-permission android:name=android.permission.INTERNET /

uses-permission
android:name=android.permission.CHANGE_WIFI_MULTICAST_STATE /
uses-permission android:name=android.permission.ACCESS_WIFI_STATE /

The program gets stuck on the receive statement.
Pls suggest.

Best Regards
Jasleen
