You should work in Best Practice Mode and try to use Custom objects as much as
possible instead of modifying with Overlay.

Yes. If you change an application using Overlays, it is more likely that you
will have trouble after an upgrade anyway. I try to minimize the impact on the
current application and create a minimal interface between existing and new
stuff.

I did have a chat to one of our server guys and he suggested similar -
we're running on tomcat and he said it would take about 10 minutes to
change the config. Shame that I don't currently have access to the
mid-tier in order to make the requisite changes.
