Thing is, they usually just work on one activity at a time. Right now, they've been working on farming for a while now, but that's supposed to be finished any day now. Though I do have to wonder why they changed farming of all things, when that doesn't even help you rank up and is really just a side-project, while activities like dredging, gem retrieval or indeed planetoid grabbing are woefully unserviced while at the same time, activities like rock analysing are extremely stingy regarding payouts when compared to other things at the same level. Before I get slammed for just commplaining and not reporting, I did report this, multiple times across several characters each time they hit level 35 and tried the activity again.

Re: infini crawl, text dungeon crawling rpg similar to the wastes.

For pausing NVDA I mean like turn it off temporarily, like put it in standby mode or something. Control just stops it from talking until the next event, but if you click on something again it starts back up. At least with the default controls. What i mean is just pause it until I tell it to start talking again.For the log, basically, the way its supposed to work is an element that is marked with an aria-live tag of polite or assertive will communicate changes to the screen reader after the page loads. Normally, the screen reader only reads static text unless otherwise told about dynamic changes. I was using this behavior for the event log. So when I added an event to it, it spoke only that event, because that's the only thing that changed.Well, now, it seems like Chrome thinks the whole log changes every time I add to it, where Firefox correctly identifies that only that one little part changed (I haven't tested Edge or Safari yet to see which side they fall on).One way that I can get around this is to put only the most current event in the log and replace what is in there. When you use the reload log button to read back the contents, I'll put the whole log in (which is really just the last 50 entries, it doesnt store more than that) so that it reads everything in the order you choose based on your settings. Then when a new event happens, it'll replace the whole log again and so forth.The only downside to this workaround is that you wouldn't be able to navigate down through the log using arrowkeys, but I'm not sure if anyone is doing that or not. I'm assuming you are though.

I have been creating a game where you have a 2d field where you can buy animals, interact with them, earn cash, get trees for auto cash, like apple trees, banana trees, sugar cane plants, etc. Also, can someone correct these for me?corn treesugarcane plantblueberry treeI'm not sure which words to use.The animals also move around and such similar things, however are restricted to boundaries so it's not too hard to find them. When you buy something, it spawns on the coords you are at, and if it is an animal it is restricted to walking four tiles outward in all directions, e.g. four west and also four north.You can put multiple animals on one tile but you can only put one tree. You win by putting 400 trees.

Re: Bookrage's choiceofgames reviews

hey Bookrage, been  reading every single one of these reviews as I have recently gotten into Choice of Games as well.I wouldn't usually comment on spelling, since you gave that disclaimer in the first post, but I noticed that under the genre section for star captain, you accidentally said does instead of doesn't, Which I figured you would want to know.So far, the only game I have actually bought has been choice of the rebel, which in my opinion is good enough to be its own novel, And even has a resource management section which is sort of like a game within a game. it just has so much Lore that at first it can be overwhelming, but at least it has A comprehensive tutorial system.There is just so much there that I feel like review would take a month, so I don't expect one anytime soon, but I'm still excited for it.I think my favorite free title so far has been choice of kung fu, Which based on the description seems like a basic hack and slash but actually has some really good writing and a compelling story. With choice of broadsides as my second favorite.

@2:Everyone always talks about the greater good as though it's the only good there is. What about the equal to good or the lesser good? You've taken a bit less than half of a function and went to great lengths to maintain it quite well, but you forget the rest. And if it turns out that good is an infinite function, and the lesser good (that is, the portion of good that falls below the defined point known as the equal good) and the equal good itself are not taken care of, then you've done 0.00% of the required sacrifice. Recall that lesser and equal good still fall within the domain of good itself, so must not be forgotten. If one must perform an operation on the lesser good, then let us not try and perform said operation on the greater good, as doing so may bring about untold mathematical catastrophe.Thanks for coming to my ted talk! It was supposed to be a Ted ed Ned Fred talk, but Ed Ned and Fred went to bed according to what they said, leaving me the only talking head, Ted. Wait there's nobody in here listening? *His face turns red as Ted hangs his head.

I did joined that game for well, taking my wrestler to the top, but I ended up enjoying another factor of that game.Which was roleplaying. we would create our own companies, championships, wars, feuds, and all of that result in a weekly "televised" show, as well as some "monthly pay-per-views."After a while, I didn't cared much for the game. but I have half of mind to start a site or a forum, where I can repeat that roleplaying experience once more with other wrestling fans like myself.

Re: the slowness of bgt

Best post in this whole freaking topic?  27.  Thirty's not far behind, either.  Thumbs up.  The rest of you hurt my head.  You know what's worse than not knowing how to program?  Not knowing how to program but still being able to tell that there's a bunch of wanabes spewing forth spurious nonsensical dribble akin to abstract philosophical junk so verbose it's less important than dehydrated toejam.Have you ever stopped to read half the stuff you guys write out here?  Post 27 was perhaps the most cohesive and coherent thing I've read in this particular room.  It was well organized, thought out, inclusive to anyone who should chance upon it and was written with no need to jump into massive amounts of complexity just to convey a point, with a bit of jokularity thrown in on the side!I stress again, I'm no programmer.  What I say you can probably go ahead and roast and toast with minimal effort if you're able to pull a line of code out of your textbooks for that particular purpose.  You'll code me away in any and every language!  PERIOD!  What I am good at, is understanding what I do know versus what I don't know.  I can tell you that I'll more than likely remember the information in post 17 if anyone should chance to ask me how on earth to develop a simple hello world program.  What I fail to understand is the why, and that's what I feel so many of you out here don't focus on.I just read a post out here that suggest you shouldn't focus on performance over productivity and that for that reason you should shye away from more complex languages.  Said poster also believes you shouldn't stick to something like BGT because performance over productivity, arguing that simplicity here gives the user less control and thus hinders productivity.  Do you know why that doesn't make any sense?  People are looking for something simple to program in so as to minimize the amount of work that has to go into the product and focus on the product itself!  What does that actually mean?  Almost everyone out here who is out here is out here because they want games and a quick way to produce them!I'm a lot of things, musician included.  I understand that computer programming, much like many other things in this world, is an art.  When I was advised by hackers to go play chess, learn a martial art, write a journal, cook a few different things, involve myself in friendly debates, yada yada yada, I began to understand one thing concretely.  You don't program overnight.  NO!  Not, really!  Programming involves so many more steps than just surface knowledge!  I could probably read all of Dardar's tutorials and not learn how to program efficiently  in python because I'm still not equipped with about a hundred other things and a checklist with which to organize them.Patience, problem solving skills and a willingness to persevere until one has the right answer and not just a mixup of good or bad answers, blocking against boredom, loss of curiosity, inability to recognize errors because one does not pay attention to careful details... I could go on and on, but the fact is that no matter how much more I throw in, that this is how art works.  It does not exist like some sort of materialistic box with fancy things inside you can just pull out and smash together and call a soup, anymore than you could call it an orchestral piece worth listening to.  I see posts in here and on other topics in this room where people throw out numbers, lines of code and phrases and other jargon they think everyone should just, flat out understand, then wield a whip of condescension they're ready and willing to use at a moment's notice when they feel they can on someone who they know or rightly guess is weaker than them in an area rather than picking them up.In short, many of you in here  are quick to dismiss BGT as a possible solution that minimizes the problem of performance over productivity while chiding those who use it because they would rather be developing games rather than trying to figure out how those games work.  If you're going to make blanket statements like that, either teach those you deem your oponents how to code efficiently by showing them why code works the way it works and the logic behind it, or admit to yourself and to them that you probably don't know as much as you think you do, rather than just telling them it works that way and if they don't understand it they need to pack it up and go to blazes!  This seriously is one room I wouldn't recommend to anyone who is trying to start out, as I've come across enough topics out here to showcase this elitist and toxic mindset of who's ideas are better and who's just don't fit the ticket, all for reasons that conflict with one another!  You can tell me that it's universally acceptible to stop developing games in any language when games in said language are not being developed in said language and there are no people playing them!  Until then?  Post 27 is living proof that

Boredom called, and we were considering the many different ways one might run a BGT server under both windows and wine with minimal blood loss. My first idea was to use a virtual frame buffer to swallow runtimes, but that wouldn't be as seamless as I would like. Thus other solutions were explored.Anyway, it comes down to some winapi console functions, look for WriteConsoleA and ReadConsoleA. For pausing NVDA I mean like turn it off temporarily, like put it in standby mode or something. Control just stops it from talking until the next event, but if you click on something again it starts back up. At least with the default controls. What i mean is just pause it until I tell it to start talking about.For the log, basically, the way its supposed to work is an element that is marked with an aria-live tag of polite or assertive will communicate changes to the screen reader after the page loads.

Attention, everybody! This Dan_Gero (whatever he calls himself) is a viscious and evil dictator! He has instituted a coup of the Pop Collective. I will not be assimilated into this abomination of an organization. In fact, I have smited Dan_Gero, and his head is delivered to each member of the audience in tiny, infinitesimal fragments. Bow down to me now, with your nose exactly 0.120 millimeters from the floor. If your nose is just 1 millimeter closer to, or farther away from the floor, then it shall be sliced open as an example of what happens to such idiocy. I have reinstated Nocturnus back in his rightful place as the leader, after giving him a superpowered form of mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. Dan_Gero is now a horcrux, and is part of my shattered soul. Muhahahahahahahahahahaha

What is wrong with this world, buddy.You know about Corona?   I have friends who honestly believe it's poppulation control!  You ever heard that idea that you shouldn't get sick and if you do you should die quickly?  Supposedly, according to the democrats, that's what the republican party believes here in the states.  That's what a ton of people I know are using to justify the idea that older and or disabled/ immune compromised people are the ones who are seriously affected.  You follow?  Basically, get rid of the waste of space and carry on getting wealthier!And then you've got nuts like Alex Jones capitolizing on the whole thing by selling people food in bulk so you don't have to leave your home at outrageous prices, Russian Media Outlets flat out blaming the United States and outright calling it an American bioweapon, twits in Croatia reselling supposed protective gear they purchased at much cheaper prices to anxious citizens, and even our local school system has started pushing the whole "tell your parents to buy extra soap and water if they give a rat's ass about you" mantra upon all atending children!  "Sign this paper!  Make sure you read it!  Here's a brochure on where you can get good prices on sanitary products!"  Biocryst, Gilead, Inovio, Novavax and Moderna are trending pretty high where stocks are concerned, all pharmaceutical companies claiming they have what it takes to stop this thing and all more than likely going to sell it at a price neither you nor your insurance are really going to want to pay.Shall we continue, or is that enough for now?

Re: Gauging interest in another 3d audio project

2020-03-02 Thread AudioGames . net Forum — Developers room : camlorn via Audiogames-reflector

Re: Gauging interest in another 3d audio project

Multiple years, hah, no.  I already almost have the world's most underwhelming media player.  There may be something to show for it by this time next week. Just depends how much free time I get.  Once the audio decoding infrastructure is finished, things should move at a pretty decent pace for a bit.  I've just not bothered posting progress here because it's beyond technical.  But to provide the quick list:1. Finish the media decoding infrastructure to a basic level. That's in progress now.2. Code a C++ source/HRTF panner bank architecture. I have a chunk of this in Python outside the repo waiting to be ported, some in Libaudioverse where I'm the sole copyright holder, and some in the repo already.3. Write some really annoying code generators and implement a command/response architecture that I could go on about at length, the short version being that I want to be able to let game code not have to wait on locks *and* batch updates so that you don't hear the audio equivalent of tearing.At 3 you can use it in something because there'll be a C++ API.  I'd call that an alpha, because it's where we find out if miniaudio is amazing or amazingly sucky.  I'm hoping for amazing, but if it's amazingly sucky then we might have a 3.5 where I have to write an audio backend which I really really don't want to have to do.  But then the fun starts (in rough priority order):4. Implement a transparent buffer caching system.  We can hold audio assets in memory in an encoded format and we can take your sounds directory and load it in the background so that it's ready for you when you need it.5. Reverb. Probably a feedback delay network. I expect several iterations of this, in order to build up to reverb zones and things like that but want this in the hands of people early.6. Make sure that things are in order enough to make the protocol system public--that is, there's already the beginnings of a piece that lets you plug in your own asset pack format for encryption or go to the internet or etc which is getting used internally.7. Implement effects chains, per source and global (i.e. chorus, etc).8. Investigate bringing EEL2 in for custom effects.  For the Reaper people, it turns out that the language you do JSFX in is open source, so anyone who knows that can write effects in theory.8.5. Also maybe investigate bringing Lua in via LuaJIT.9. Maybe work on raycasting to compute reverb.And then after that it's based off demand or my own usage or what have you.  For some idea as to the C API I have in mind:syz_handle audio, source;
// could be http, my-magic-format, whatever.
syz_createGenerator(, "file", "my_file.ogg", "");
syz_createSource();
// TBD. Also the default.
// Third parameter is options, key1=value1 key2=value2. Almost never used.
// In future/from a higher level language you can parse urls to this.
syz_sets(source, "panning_strategy", "hrtf");
syz_setf3(source, "position", 5, 5, 0);
syz_addGenerator(source, file);
syz_command(file, "play");The point being that anyone wanting to use this just has to bind seti/setf/setf3/sets, command, and then the general purpose library initialization stuff and the few things that sadly absolutely must be special cases.  No enums or anything like that.  Do one magic 20 line Python class and you're done, you can set all the properties for today and tomorrow as well.  Obviously I'm omitting error handling for the sake of expediency.If you're wondering "but strings are slow": yes, they can be.  Probably not too slow for this application. But through magic pointer fuckery, anyone who cares will be able to go through syz_magicFastString("foo") and get a magic value that is magic that they can magically use instead to be faster. Because it's magic, in case you didn't get the point. I probably won't actually name the function that.

Re: the slowness of bgt

@20All fair points and accurate, but this discussion was about games, though I guess it isn't now.  But I was addressing it from that perspective.I will say though that while you're right that people won't need to i.e. use variadic parameter packs, things like the rule of 3 and the rule of 5 (which I have to look up myself when I head in that direction) and the gotchas around virtual vs non-virtual base classes are pretty bad, just to provide some examples.  I think that anyone who is still in BGT all the time, or who is debating between BGT and PB, is probably not quite ready for the levels of insanity even basic C++ has to offer.  Even if you know you should only learn a subset, there's still no particularly good way to figure out what that subset should be.There's a very nice subset of C++ post 2011 and now post 2020, where a lot of the problems are getting solved, and I can even go so far as to say that I find some of it very pleasant to use; but you still have to know about the other stuff fairly quickly.  There's just too much surface area.  I can't in good conscience tell people to use it if they're still learning to program in the slightest,.It's very catch 22. You can either use C, which has so little abstraction that it's hard to do anything safely, or C++, which is C++.@27You can effectively make loading assets take 0 time with threads.  I'm hoping that Synthizer will get to a point of being able to just do this behind the scenes as it's a little hard to get right, but we shall see.  Sighted games take forever to load because of graphics-related stuff primarily.

Re: How do you cook on a flat-top stove?

@29The thing about touching meat is more about being able to tell if it flipped or not and less about being able to tell if it's done.  That said, I can tell if it's done by texture, but that's more from lots and lots of practice and less from some easily sharable technique.I'm not going to strongly suggest anyone go off and try my rather interesting touch really close to the hot things tricks but they work for me, and a little tiny brush with the tip of a finger is actually very different from an accidental brush with the hand.  That said gas is perhaps more dangerous.  The trick with being able to touch hot stuff is touching it very lightly and very quickly;  if you are at all heavy handed, yeah it'll get you.  Applying pressure or not is what seems to make all the difference.Also, if it's hot enough to instantly burn you, it's probably hot enough to make your meat an unappetizing charred mess anyhow.  Your fingers are just pork that happen to be alive.  If you're doing something like a stir fry then being that hot is probably justified, but for something like hamburger I would say that the time to seriously burning your finger if you touch the skillet directly should at least be half a second or so.  That's probably what happened in your fish story.  I very rarely actually set my stove to high, and it's a weak stove.I would also suggest bigger pots if dropping things in is an issue.  You can always go bigger without really affecting most recipes.I'm not saying find the center of the pot using the heat, just that it's a good way to tell if you got the pot completely covering the burner.  If part of the burner is uncovered there's often a very noticeable hot spot off to one side.  It's not foolproof, but it's better than most things you're going to get once it's too hot to touch.I do a lot with knives, but I've never been able to get on par with a sighted person, and a good food processor goes faster than a sighted person anyway.  Mandolines can also do potato chips at about a potato a minute, and slice carrots and stuff like you wouldn't believe.  Now if only I actually liked vegetables.That pork recipe doesn't actually come out tasting very salty to me, but take that with a grain of salt because I like salty stuff.  it's kinda hard to describe what it's actually like other than very rich.@30The colander pots with inserts are something like $20 or $30 and (at least in the U.S.) can be found at most stores.  They're often called steamers I think.  I can pour boiling water into a strainer/etc in the sink if I want but it's just so much easier, especially given that my sink is very small and sucky.  It's good value for money because it can i.e. steam seafood, make tamales, do dim sum if you feel masochistic enough to be bothered folding them all, etc.

Re: CityInc: an accessible passtime for micromanagement gamers

Righto, Dark, will attempt to answer all of your questions, but realize I might miss something as I'm currently sleep deprived and sleep is probably going to elude me for awhile longer still...On my build page I get something that looks like the following to NVDA.TRANSPORT200$3,420/cycleRoads Cycle: 0.04s It may look a little different to you if you've tampered with your settings as I have, so bare with me here.  I happen to know that I've bought 200 roads.  Obviously, when you start off you won't have 200 roads.  You'll actually see a little bit of text that says something along the lines of "click here to earn your first dollar."  Once you do that you should see that you actually have 1 road.  Clicking on that number, the number corresponding to the amount of whatever structure you have will give you the profit associated with that particular structure or real estate or space or whatever it is, provided that you have allowed the proper amount of time to pass.  IN the case of roads, that amount of time is 0.04 seconds; you can click on it every 0.04 seconds and generate cash.  This is what is known as the cycle.So, in short, I can click on the 200 which is the number of roads I have and generate cash.  Obviously, that can get very tedious, very quickly, so the politician was created to step in, once you generate enough cash to pay for them.  Each site has a politician associated with it and you can navigate them using whatever your prefered method for navigating headdings is... I see my politician names appear as level 2 headings with their price at level 4 after clicking on the link labeled politics.  They're usually rather easy to understand but do have descriptions as to what they do between level 2 and level 4.  Purchasing each will autogenerate the profit associated with them; Obamacare for medical, schoolboard for education and Internal Revenue Service for banks and so on.Moving on, debates is a bit like blackjack or 21, in which the aim of the game is to beat your adversary by obtaining a number of votes higher than theirs.  In this case, remember that there is a max of 210 votes per either side in a debate, that is, you must not exceed 210 votes, nor should your opponent.  To start a game of debates, simply navigate to the slider and increase or decrease it as necessary; you will see the amount you are actually putting in below the slider.  Once you've adjusted it to your liking push the start debate button.  Once you've pushed the button you have entered into a debate.  The page will change to reflect this by showing you something like the following:My party 75Votes left: 135… Opposing party 4Awaiting player… Choose your argumentTransport(30-90) Civilian(1-110) Business(50-150) or...Rest the case.As mentioned above, this is like playing blackjack; it's a gamble either way.  We know that the opposing party has a total of 4 votes and our party at present has 75 votes, with 135 remaining before reaching 210; 75+135=210.  We are then told that transport might give us anywhere between 30 and 90 votes, civilian might give us anything between 1 and 110, and business may give us anything between 50 and 150.  For the sake of this demonstration I shall choose transport and see what happens.My party 138Votes left: 72… Opposing party 49Gained 45 votes…As you can see, I've gained 45 votes bringing my total of votes to 138.  My opponent sits at 49.  I will once again choose transport and hope, but not cross my fingers for 72 votes or something close to it.My party 173Votes left: 37… Opposing party 67Gained 18 votes…I'm not entirely feeling lucky today given many different things that have been going on, including an incident in another topic where I seriously misspelled clone, so I'm going to rest my case and hope for the best while expecting the worst.My party 173Holding argument Opposing party 231Congratulations, You won the debate!You just made another $150!That, in a nutshell and a half, is debates.  If you have any further questions, push them onto the topic and we'll see what we can do.

Re: help with recording my class with audacity?

I would recommend just recording it as normal, and then using the gain function afterward. Just hit shift-g while you're focused on the track with the class's audio in the track table, and enter a number for the number of db to raise the track volume up by. 12 will crank it up a really large amount, so something less than that is usually fine. You'll of course want to make sure the microphone is as close to the teacher as possible so that you get less of the background noise of the room and more of the teacher. Then file/export.

The steps are to click upgrade entombed to the full version on the main menu, then create a new account, enter a username and pw, and then you have to just try logging in with that user name and pw over the next week or so. Also, While I do think it was wrong for Eight to do that to Eleven, they would be a really good team together and Eight could easily come to her senses and realize what she did was fucked up.

Yes, Rorys games were nothing impressive, in fact, mostly lacking of that, but everyone has to start somewhere. Especially when learning a new language. Rory had quite a few bgt games, witch were nothing great either but they did have classes, used the soundpool, maps, etc. So rory isn't unwilling to learn. He's simply starting with a new language. When I moved from python to go, I didn't start making games right away, and I still haven't, but I'm trying to get better with the language.

I don't need to wipe the system partition? Does installing a zip automatically do that? Is this process really that easy?

Re: How do you cook on a flat-top stove?

When I boil water, I've got a fairly big and deep pot with handles on both sides. I empty my sink and rinse it, stick my colander in the sink, then when I'm ready to dump out the pot of boiling water/strain whatever's in there, I just grab both handles, walk slowly, and tip gently. I've given myself the occasional splash (and I do mean very tiny bits of water), and the steam blast can be a bit intense, but I'm used to it now and feel comfy doing it with a large colander and large pot. An insert would be cool though.I've never really been afraid of knives. I routinely chop veggies or meat with a knife, and I'm fine with it. Hell, I cut myself a couple of weeks ago because I had a pack of sausages that were in tight plastic packaging, and I tried to use a knife to slit them open and my friggin' hand slipped. Got my left thumb a damn good one, bled like mad for a bit. I'm fine, the cut's like 98% healed now, and it didn't make me knife-shy. I don't know what it was about heat that had me so nervous for so long.I was lucky in that I was taught to respect dangerous things instead of fearing them. I was never actually taught to cook much, only to chop and prepare certain foods, and even that was kind of lackluster. I think with anything dangerous like this, respect is everything. Know where the danger really is instead of just being terrified. Know that you can go a little slowly until such time that you feel safe. Know that you don't have to do things exactly the same way as someone else, so long as everything works out well and your tasks get done.

Oh nifty, didn't know you could shell straight into TWRP. Do you have to enable any settings, click any permission dialogs, etc.? Or is that available by default when recovery mode boots?

Re: Let's appreciate a sharp, devs of king of dragon pass and six ages.

Hi:I find that the layout of Six Ages on the iPad is much more organized than KODP. I guess the reason Sixx Ages is so hard on beginners is that there are fewer resources at the start of the game. In KODP you start with a decently sized herd of cattle most of the time, a reasonable amount of goods and the like. In SIx Ages one has to be a spendthrift and prioritize what needs doing the most for example, while giving gifts to the neightbours is a good idea, increasing food production by building shrines is more important in the early stage--sweet talk the neighbours once your own people have enough to eat.

Re: How do you cook on a flat-top stove?

camlorn wrote:If you're not sure if the pot is aligned once the heat is on, put your hand above the pot and make circles.  The heat will be relatively uniform and nicely centered if the pot is completely covering the burner, otherwise it's usually pretty obvious that there's a spot where the burner is exposed to the air.in fact that is the first thing I tried (but mine are not flat top anyway) and still, its kinda hard to tell where the exact center of the pot is, when you want to mix something in hot oil for instance. Not all pans and pots are of the same size, and that complicates it even more. Furthermore, at least on this one, the flame appears to be more towards the front of every burner Thankfully all my pans and so on  have handles that all stick out so it gives you a much better sense of everything.For meats and flipping, the fun thing is that you can touch the top of the meat with your bare fingertips as long as you're careful.  This takes coordination as to not touch the bottom of the pan, but again a very very brief brush with the bottom of the pan isn't the end of the world.  Maybe practice this with gloves first, but I tell if a hamburger or whatever has flipped just by reaching in and touching it. You can find it with a fork first and then follow the fork down.I had a very brief, almost accidental, bruising with the outer edge of a pan. Guess what_ it did indeed burn the skin, there were visible marks on my finger. And of course it did hurt and took about two days to completely heal. Lamentably, checking whether a meat (other than a hamburger which is actually too easy and not very healthy to make) is done is mostly done through sight alone, because of the coloration or changing in color of the meat. True, it might feel somewhat warmer, but to me it still feels raw. in fact, most people normally flip it and then see whether its really done, because the direct heat is what is cooking the side underneath you cannot see. Actually, I thought my thermometer was lying to me the other day, since father said that a fish was done because it looked (and even felt) a bit crispy on BOTH sides and the thing gave an internal average  reading of about 52 degrees Celsius  (that is about I think 125 or so fahren... however you spell it). Of course when my brother started to cut it it was raw.I still fear electric heat less than gas heat though. But normally I just turn everything off as a precaution before moving on with anything.For boiling water for i.e. pasta, baked potatoes, or boiled eggs, you want a pot with a colander insert.  This will also usually work for steaming as well.  When you're done, you can lift the insert out and all the hot water stays in the pot. No pouring required.  Only downside is they're often very large, much too big for a dishwasher, so cleaning them can be a pain.thanks for that, will look into this, but pouring is not that bad anywayFor hamburgers a foreman grill is the easiest.  I believe I have this one.  You can do hamburgers, chicken breast, etc on the stove but it's just not worth the trouble if you can cheat.we got a cheaper one, but it did the job fantastically with a steak. IN less than 3 minutes and you got something very decent. I think that is worth the cleaning afterwards. Though the stove and pans are easier to clean.Supplement your cooking with a food processor (not a blender--a food processor is different) and a mandoline and you can avoid most of the hard work of chopping vegetables.I think I do have one of these but have not used it yet. It might be helpful but at least knives and I are not enemies lol.Finally, for caramel, which I don't do often, google the cold water test.  It's entirely tactile and you can find conversion tables from it to what a candy thermometer would read to within 3 or 4 degrees.  Before the days of $10 thermometers in every store that's how people made candy.  Be really afraid of caramel however: as I said above, heat should be feared if it's sticky.If you want an easy but impressive recipe, everyone I know likes this Vietnamese caramel pork.  It needs some basic chopping and some basic stovetop stirring.  It's very rich though though, and bad for you.  You can however modify the basic idea to change the ingredients to whatever you want and get some pretty impressive stuff--doing just coconut water, pork, fish sauce, and mushrooms goes really well on tortillas for a weekday meal.very interesting, though mixing salty and sweet stuff is sort of meh.. in here.I think the air fryer can also accomplish many things that were not possible to us long ago. Baking is also so much easier in some ways but requires more prep work and measuring.
