Re: I am affronted by the presence of god I know that some will not like what I say, or think it is insensitive, but I am here to testify about my own experiences with suffering, and how the Lord carried me through. When I was born, I was 13 weeks premature, and was approximately 2 pounds, along with my twin sister. I was rendered totally blind by Retinopathy Prematurity (ROP) stage 5, that came with a mild case of Cerebral Palsy, which still affects my right side to this day. Almost 10 days before the birth of my sister and I, my parents lost another baby who was in the womb with us, a 1-pound boy. Throughout the time my twin and I were in the NICU, for 73 days, my parents prayed constantly, even amidst their heartbreak for the loss of their child born too early. Even though I was rendered blind at birth, and even though my sister and I were close to death, we survieaved through blood transfusions given to us from people my paren'ts knew, but had not considered contacting until then. One doctor I visited told my parents I would not be able to sit up, or walk at all, or do any of the things I can now do today. Also, I had an experience that is still very memorable for me to this day. About 8 or 9 years ago, I had to have a major done on my legs, because I was walking in a posture bent over for several years, and if that surgery had not been done, I would be permanently wheelchair-bound. When I was recoverIng from that surgery, there were times when the pain was nearly unbearable, to the point that I thought death would be preferable to this existence of pain which had become my life. The sleepless nights, in which pain ruled my senses passed by as though years were passing, the hours like days, the minutes agonizing. Through this experience though, a number of people helped me through it, and it is my firm and unshakable belief that God worked through them in little but impactful ways to help me. My great-grand-mother, who is now dead, talked to me during my recovery, which helped her, and me both. My friends, both from school and elsewhere, visited me with a container of jokes that were read to me to keep me laughing, they played games with me to keep me distracted, and told me the hard truth that I had to do something, when I didn’t want to do it. That is why I say that through this experience that I whole-heartedly believe that God whispers in our pleasures, and shouts in our pain. We may not hear him, because we are too focused on our circumstances. I can testify to that firsthand, because at the time, when I was recovering from that surgery, if you would have told me that God was going to carry me through this, and give me confidence in my steps, I would have scoffed at you, or at best, been skeptical. Now, I see what he did through this experience, and it has made me more empathetic to others suffering through pain. Let me say though, that although I have not watched someone experiencing the effects of Alzheimer’s Disease, nor the pain which Cancer brings, I do feel very sorry for what your grandmother went through, and I will pray for ernestly. I pray that your eyes will be opened, and that you may see the plans that God has for your life. We may not see the full picture from our point of view. If God were to snap his fingers, and take away every problem we experienced, then where would our faith come from? I believe that through suffering, we can see the ways in which the Lord works, both big and small. Again, I know that this may not convince all of you, but think for one moment, that even though someone may experience bodily suffering, they can experience an inner peace, a joy that only faith in God can give. This is not the same joy that momentary happiness gives us, but a constant belief that God is faithful, and will deliver them, through anything the world may throw at them. That is all I have to say. I pray for all of those who do not believe, and anticipate the discussion that may follow this post. I downloaded it, and was able to open the file, and read its contents without any problems whatsoever. I opened it through the KeyBRF application directly. However, upon trying to open it through KeyFiles, the machine had the same error you described. I do not know all the rules of what the BrailleNote Touch+ naming conventions allow and do not allow, but it does not allow periods (.) or colons (:) in the names of files. Dashes, or hyphens, as they are also known, are allowed. I re-named the file to Changes in the Nucleus, and it was able to open both ways without issues. Re: I've randomly become fed up with school Hello,I have occasionally been suffering from semester burn-out, but it's the reward I get in the end, the knowledge I will have if I apply myself, and the support of professors, personal friends of mine that keep me going. I think an education system is only as good as those that run it, that are apart of it. In the United States, at least in the district I am in, I know that in the Spanish language that I am studying, teachers are taking a more student-centered approach to facilitating a course. I don’t know a lot of details right now, as I am a first-year Practicum student, but I am sure these details will become known in time. What I do know though is that the way my Cooperating Teacher (the person who I am observing) teaches, he makes the lessons interactive, and always creates an environment where the student answers the questions, and makes it so he’s talking to them, not at them. His tests, also, are very application-heavy, which I think is excellent at a beginning level of learning a foreign language. I also must make clear here that I am approaching this subject from a mainstream school perspective, in a public school district. To the original poster, I apologize if I have not said anything helpful. I ' know that online schooling doesn’t work for everybody, and can be very difficult, and nearly impossible for some. All I can say is, keep going, and motivate yourself to press on, knowing how much happier you will be when it's over. Also, where do you live? Would anyone know about the braille code for the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) braille code? I am taking a class known as Spanish Phonetics next semester, on my way to becoming a Spanish teacher at the high school or collegiate level. I am using a BrailleNote Touch+ in tandem with a Windows 10 PC running the latest version of NVDA. From what I have found, NVDA has no table for the IPA code in its list of braille tables. It is a very specific and uncommon code, and is used by those studying Latin script, or any linguistical topic. I would appreciate any help that can be given. It would be more irksome than scanning over braille with one finger, as you have to painstakingly comb over every letter with the left or right arrow keys, while scanning over a group of letters in Braille could take, on average, about five seconds or so less time. While I may respect individual officers for their services to the community (such as one story where a police officer of the Minnesota Police Department was seen kneeling with a protester in solidarity) or the officer who caught a falling infant as they were near the ground when falling out of a window, but I am in full agreement that paramedics should have been sent in this particular case. Dark, I respect where you are coming from, and I would not blame you at all for avoiding the U.S. for the moment because of the current leadership of our country. That should be the case, and it is definitely worth an aggressive push to get that to return. However, I still do receive italics indications when I connect it as a braille display. In BRF files, I still can tell paragraphical indentation, and centered headings, as was done before. I feel there have been some improvements in how some text is displayed in note-takers, especially where STEM is concerned and other languages are concerned. Perhaps the meaning of a braille display, and note-taker has changed over the years. Perhaps there are some ways in which there have been some improvement, and some ways where regression has occurred. At the end of the day, I still can appreciate literacy as a braille reader, and still can tell the difference between a paragraphical indentation, and a heading inentation. Embossers can still emboss raw braille formatted text if one wishes. I hope you understand where I am coming from, and I understand that I am speaking without the experiences with the old note-taker technology, as you knew it. That's my two cents here. I would recommend the BrailleNote Touch+ over the BrailleSense U2, for a few reasons:1. The BrailleSense U2 runs on an outdated version of Windows CE 6.0, an operating system for mobile pocket PCs in the 1990s, while the BrailleNote Touch+ runs on Android 8.1.0, a version of Android which is still supported by the parent company, Google to this day, and still gets security updates from time to time. 2. It is much more reliable when dealing with foreign languages than the BrailleSense. I am from the United States, and can only speak for my experience in using the U2 to input Spanish text. I can tell you now that it could not do certain symbols. Also, the BrailleSense only has six supported braille codes: U.S. English Braille, Unified English Braille, Spanish, French, German, and Italian. The BrailleNote Touch+ has support for over 100 languages of text alone, and if that isn’t enough, it has a unicode app that can copy any character of unicode into any application. 3. Stability with high-level Mathematics and Science: The BrailleSense has been known to crash unexpectedly when inputting high-level algebraic expressions using its built-in function known as "Nemeth Mode." Iif some combinations of symbols are put together, it will make a word document inoperable by both the BrailleSense user, and any sighted individual who may look at the work you may do, such as a teacher or co-worker. With the BrailleNote Touch+, there may have been a symbol or two that just couldn't be put into the document for some reason, but never has a document crashed, or looked strange when doing high-level Scientific Equations. 5. Seamless integration with Google: The BrailleNote Touch+ runs on the Android platform, and as such has access to Google Drive, which the BrailleSense U2 does not have access at all. This allows smooth transport of files from the Touch to the computer, where advanced functions, such as the hanging indent in Microsoft Word can be performed, with the BrailleNote Touch+ acting as a braille display. I am using my Touch+, in fact to type this extremely long message, which makes typing efficient, and less tiring me, as I am an individual with Cerebral Palsy. Sorry for the long message, but I hope I have provided a sufficient argument as to why the BrailleNote Touch+ is better to use overall. If these devices would be put on lower-price tags, this could affect multiple areas of daily life, like employment and personal enjoyment. Employers could no longer make the excuse that this product costs too much, because it would be at the exact same price as that of products for sighted consumers. I feel that we need to continue to protest the business model of the Assistive Technology industry in a passionate but respectful way as is being doing now, that we need to become workers at these companies, so that we can, over time, change the direction that a company is going. I respect your opinions, but I hope you will also respect me when I say that I do not entirely share your views on these companies. I am currently the owner of a BrailleNote Touch+ from HumanWare, and I am proud to say that this product has helped me immensely in my academics, and my enjoyment of reading of books, articles, and periodicals in braille. I especially have appreciated the support that has been allocated towards the area of Science and Mathematics. In my experience with note-takers before this, owned by HIMS, they did not stand up to the amount of Academic excellence that this product has given to me. Right now, I am using it as a Braille display to type out this response, and can be assured that with my mild disability of Cerebral Palsy on the right side of my body, this technique of writing enables me to create a well-written error-free response. It is currently my understanding that the amount of programs that support accessible entry of Mathematics and other areas of the STEAM field are currently lacking for any of the desktop platforms, such as Microsoft Windows, Apple MacOS, iOS, Google Android, or others. As a user of multiple languages other than English, I find that the BrailleNote Touch+ has given me the most authentic experience in accessing the text I need to succeed. If anyone believes that my claims that the amount of accessible math entry on the desktop and mobile platforms are inaccurate, I invite you to point me towards those specific resources, so I can educate myself on what is true. I also must say that those that produce blistering critiques of these companies do nothing, if all they do is talk, and do not do anything to reverse the trend they do not want. There are sites out there that do offer sound affects for free, also. It may have been a bad misjudgment, but we all can make these mistakes. @Gaki_Shonin, do you have a external DVD or CD that you can use that is blank? If so, you can download a Windows 10 ISO, and paace it on that medium, whether it is a DVD, or CD. Then you can perform a clean install of Windows completely independently, without sighted help, I believe. Re: I Have to Use Jaws For a Few Hours, and Here Are My Thoughts When using JAWS, I agree that it is slightly more efficient navigating Microsoft Word documents than NVDA, but there are a number of things that JAWS does within its braille support that are very poor supports indeed (in my opinion). Some of these are indications of formatting. No matter if something is bolded, underlined or italicized, JAWS uses dots 7 and 8 (dots that are not normally used, especially in the United States) to indicate all those types of formatting. Even though you may put dots 4-5 followed by 2 to indicate bold, they intermingle with dots 7 and 8, and therefore make it very hard to discern what’s going on with a block of formatted text. You could press Jaws key+f of course, but it is much faster to read a formatting change in Braille. Also, when it comes to mathematical content, JAWS is woefully inadequate for reading high-level mathematical and scientific equations. I am currently a college student taking intro-level Chemistry, and the reading of these equations by a screen-reader is required since my textbook is online. NVDA, however, reads math content smoothly and flawlessly, even displaying it as Nemeth content on my braille display.So in short, I think JAWS should stay around for some things, but I definitely only use it as a secondary screen-reader. There's also the Code Factory Eloquence and Vocalizer add-on for NVDA beta for NVDA 2019.3, but I just tried the add-on recommended for previous versions of NVDA, and it said there was a problem activating my trial license, saying I didn't have a working internet connection. The first computer I had it on was a Dell Inspiron PC with 2.9 GB of RAM on it, and 218 GB of hard disc space. I had been using it for nearly 6 years prior to this. It worked fine, until a family member slammed the lid of a laptop with unnecessary force in a fit of temper, but where I stand right now is this:I have Windows 10 on an HP Envy Laptop with Windows 10 1903 (I haven't updated it to the latest build yet). It's starting to deteriorate in speed because of its age, but I have had it for nearly 5 years, and it still runs reasonably well. I also have Windows 10 1909 on an HP Envy Convertible X360 Laptop which I am using now, and it's lightning fast! I can assure you of the fact that even legacy titles like those of BSC run, as long as the right utilities are installed (which, after you know where to go to get them, it's not difficult at all to install them.) I can post a guide if anyone is interested. I will not hide from you that there is a learning curve to Windows 10, but it is manageable. Very Strange Computer Issue Hello. I am having a strange issue with my computer. Everything functions, but the screen is totally black to anyone who attempts to see it, unless they have a flash light, and only then can they see it faintly. The microsoft support people did everything they could think of, changing the graphics settings on apps, changing the theme, the background, everything. No changes. They said it might be an LCD problem.There are no bumps or cracks in the screen as far as I have seen. Spanish Braille Input with displays Hello everyone. Does anyone have any experience typing with Spanish Braille input on a braille display? I am taking a Spanish course in college, and I am using my note-taker as a display on my computer, and the note-taker is perfectly capable of making Spanish Braille translatable into legible print, and I was just wondering if you could do the same on a computer to accomplish complex tasks.
