I was lucky enough to fly the DuckHawk for 8 hours this weekend - it now
has a very impressive electric flap system. There's no flap handle, it's
just always in the right position. While the computer vision tech to read
clouds/terrian is a long way off (in my opinion), I reckon a perfect
dolphin so

I think the answer as to why the drag is seen as acceptable, is the
perceived (real or not) ability to safely continue soaring almost down to
ground level, offsetting the (measured) 1-2 LD points loss on glide.

I'm baffled as to how many people are often 'needed' to run an operation.
Most clubs I've visited still have one if not TWO people required to sit on
the ground and log the takeoffs and landings for the whole day.
Trivially avoidable by either having pilots record their own takeoff and
landing time

return, then jump on the sea breeze convergence coming from Sydney as the
thermals died and do some big distance down past Canberra and back. It'd
already started falling apart around Bathurst but I found a bit of a storm

Regarding the competition pilot vs. non-competition pilot debate, I don't
think I've met a junior that hasn't been, or doesn't want to go to
Joeyglide. Perhaps in the broader population competition pilots are under

about. Don't conflate sports with airworthiness. Scales are for checking
weight relative to handicap, not some mobile enforcement arm of CASA.

The QLD forecast for this morning died with a very unhelpful error.
The daily forecasts are setup such that the failure of one forecast
cascades into all the others.
This is obviously not desirable and should be fixed at some point.
