Cheri, in a way I'm happy for my gaff, otherwise I wouldn't have learned
this particularity. Actually is kindda funny, because now that I'm
researching my family in other islands I was thinking there were a lot of
single mothers in Sao Jorge im comparison to Sao Miguel. (LOL).

Thank you, Joao, I think I finally understand.

Manoel was the child that was born. He was the son of Jorge Machado Deniz and
this Jorge Machado Deniz was the sone of another Jorge Machado Deniz. That
means that Manoel's father and his paternal grandfather have the same name.

It is the Machado Deniz name that interests me. I just could not figure out
what the record was saying and could not get past that until I understood it.

Thank you again for clarifying it for me. Celeste

[AZORES-Genealogy] St. Joseph Cemetery in Hayward, CA

Repost for Eric Gomes at gomes.ancestry at gmail.com

Hi all,

I have belonged to the group for about two months... And I have been
reading the messages to try and understand the format before I send
out my first reply/email/message... In otherwords I have a lot of
questions etc., because my Azorean/Sao Miguel tree goes back three or
four generation to the point that we know which boat most of my gg-
grandparents travelled to Hawaii on.

I am going to start with a question to Celeste. In the message below
you mention the St. Joseph cemetery in Hayward. Where is that
located?? I grew up in Hayward (and now live in Castro Valley)

Thanks,

Eric,

St. Joseph's in Hayward is actually Mount St. Joseph's. It's located at the
1000 block of Walpert Street, Hayward. It is owned and over seen by All
Saints Catholic Church, 22824 Second St., Hayward 510.581.2570. If you want
to go to the cemetary, you'll need to contact them first as the cemetery is
kept locked.

I'm curious about your Sao Miguel relatives. I also have ancestors that came
from Sao Miguel to Hawaii and some of them are buried at St. Joseph's.
Manuel (1850 -1933) and Maria Pereira (1954 - 1933) for one. Any possible

I've just listed for this group and noticed all the posts.

My known routs are on the island of Pico. I was born in Sao Rouque. My father

Does anyone have any historical information on these families?

Look forward to your comments.

Hi Eric,
Welcome to the group.  Mt. St. Joseph Cemetery is located on Walpert St. In
the olden days, you could only reach the cemetery via Second St.  Walpert is
the street just past the castle.  Now, Walpert runs between Second St and
Mission Blvd.
This cemetery was begun about 1875 and served the Hayward area for the most
part.  When I was extracting the record, I heard that because a lot of babies
were buried it was sometimes referred to the Cemetery of the Babies and that
many people from other areas had their babies buried there.
I have the records for the most part from the beginning of the burials until
about 1960.  At the time I extracted the records, there was one more book and I
was not allowed to include that book.
It is pretty much true that Catholics buried from All Saints Church were
buried there until Holy Sepulchre was started in 1937, I think.  The cemetery
does not have perpetual care so families had to tend the graves themselves.
Now, I think the church does some maintenance; however, there has been a lot of
vandalism.

Eric,
It is true that the grave stones were put into a database (not the one I
did).  Many of the stones had been destroyed and were at the bottom of the
creek that runs behind the cemetery.  If you are looking for someone that may
be buried there, they may or may not have a stone.
In addition, there is a large section at the back of the cemetery that was
known as the poor ground.  Almost no stones were found there when I began
looking for my uncle who died in 1917 at the age of 3 months.  Of course, my
grandparents did not have the money for a stone and that is the reason I began
looking at the 14 books for the cemetery.

Shirley,

The family that I have which are buried at St. Joseph's are: Manuel Pereira
1850-1933 and Joaquina Rosa Morgado Pereira 1854-1933 ( I mistyped below
when I typed Maria). They are my gg grandparents. They arrived in Hawaii in
Sept 1882 from Feteiras, Ponta Delgado, Sao Miguel on the Hansa. They came
to the Oakland/Hayward area about 1898. Also buried in St. Joseph's in the
same plot is one of their daughters Alexandrina and her husband Germano
Silva.

The other line which also came to Hawaii, also arrived in 1882. They arrived
in June aboard the Monarch. They are the Fernandes' listed below.

My Faial ancestors are from Cedros. That is my Medeiros line. My
grandfather, Jose Medeiros and his parents Manuel Medeiros and Maria Machado
came here in 1906. They arrived in Boston and then traveled by train to the
Martinez, CA area where they settled and stayed. Manuel's parents were
Antonio Francisco Medeiros and Maria Clara. I don't have the names of Maria
Machado's parents yet.

Hi Celeste,
How were you able to extract the records? I have been to St Mary's cemetery
in Oakland, CA and I was lucky
to get the location of my grandparents grave. Do you happen to know if it is
easy to get records from the churches.
My mother and her siblings were baptized at St Leo's, also in Oakland.
While I'm at it, has anyone obtained baptismal information from Mission San
Jose, in Fremont CA from the 1880's?
Any ideas of how to get information of births of Alameda Co. in the 1880's?
Thanks,
Tish

[AZORES-Genealogy] Priestly Handwriting...

2010-04-19 Thread David
I'm afraid I now need to join the wave of folks here seeking help to
decipher a long-ago priest's handwriting...in this case, from the 19th
Century, from among the baptismal records for Urzelina on S. Jorge.

I believe I have found the baptismal record for my maternal
grandfather's father, Manuel Ignacio da Silva / Manuel Enos Sylvia.
As an interesting historical sidenote, my great-grandfather operated a
photography studio on Dartmouth Street in New Bedford, in his house
right next to Rural Cemetery, with his clientele being the Portuguese
community of the area. Apparently he became something of a de facto
chronicler of the early 20th C. Portuguese community of New Bedford,
because several relatives have reported often meeting new Portuguese-
American acquaintances who, when they learn of the link to Manuel E.
Sylvia, haul out old family photos taken by him, still in the
cardboard frame marked with his studio's name.

In any event, all we had known was his birth date, that he had come
from S. Jorge aged around 18, and that he was the illegitimate son of
one Ignacia, who in the U.S. later married an American named Smitz and
disappeared from family memory but who had been a teenaged domestic
when she was supposedly impregnated by her boss, whom the oral
tradition in the family referred to as Eduardo da Silva, allegedly a
judge or lawyer with a wife and family. Manuel's wife, Luiza da
Silva / Louiza Sylvia, likewise was born illegitimate, to an Isabel
who later married in the U.S. a Bento d'Oliveira, she also allegedly
having been a teenaged domestic impregnated by the master of the
house, in this case remembered as a Jorge da Silva, who was allegedly
a lawyer or judge. (I.e., the two purported fathers, Eduardo and
Jorge, were remembered as being a lawyer and a judge, but memories
faded as to which was which.)

In the CCA baptismal records for Urzelina I came across the following
record I believe to be Manuel (because the birth date matches and he
was from S. Jorge):

Urzelina, Baptismos 1871-1879 Livro1 sjg.ve.ur.b- Livro 1874.002
http://pg.azores.gov.pt/drac/cca/biblioteca_digital/SJVUB1871-1879/SJVUB1871-1879_item1/P50.html

I have transcribed as follows (using the original 19th C. orthography)
what I could make out (and I read Portuguese fine, so the meaning
isn't a problem, just the handwriting), but try as hard as I can to
decipher it, some of the text remains inscrutable to me (i.e.,
wherever I have question marks):

No. 1 Manoel

??.
O Conego Vigario Antonio [Nunes?] de ???

In addition, the reference to the padrinho from S. Miguel, Augusto the
laborer, makes me wonder whether he was in fact the natural father.
There's apparently no madrinha; would this have been unusual, naming a
padrinho without a madrinha? I believe it was Pat Amaral who told me
years ago that the biological father, if of some social stature, was
often the padrinho, even when the father might be listed as pai
incognito... Have others of you found that to be true?

I'm fully prepared to accept that Eduardo da Silva and Jorge da
Silva, the judge and the lawyer, may simply be family history
fictions created to soften the illegitimate births of Manuel and Luiza
and raise their perceived status. Being the first known lawyer in my
family, though, I confess part of me hopes one or both of them was a
judge or lawyer, a kindred spirit across the years... But is anyone
aware of how one could find out the names of all judges and lawyers on
S. Jorge during, say, the 1870's? If I could find such a resource, I
ought to be able to locate any Eduardo da Silva and Jorge da Silva, if
they actually existed... I'm thinking of contacting the Ordem de
Advogados in Ponta Delgada to see if they have records back
