Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Microfilms discontinued

2017-08-18 Thread Rosemarie Capodicci
Joao,
You can still order the film for a few more weeks. *If *they have extra
copies they will send them to you, they *will not* make new copies. The
next problem is, will your local FHC allow you to keep them on permanent
loan. My FHC has the room so they will allow me to keep what I have on
permanent loan, for now. Who know what will happen in the future!?

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Casais das Flores e do Corvo no longer in Amazon - new book coming soon

2017-08-18 Thread João Ventura
Just got the book (finally).

It covers all the island. In comparison with the Casais book, it doesn't
include Corvo, and it re-organizes all the data in a classical descendents
report format.

I'm attaching an image of some people that may ring a bell to you Eric.

My opinion of it? It should be an ebook... I want to search names, and I
don't want to read and turn 782 pages each time.

Thankfully, the author seems to have realized that it's better to leave the
book in amazon, so I'd still recommend to buy that one as well:
https://www.amazon.com/Casais-das-Flores-Corvo-Portuguese-ebook/dp/B00AQAOOF6

During the process to buy the book, I got a list from the Lajes city hall
that indicates they have a lot of other of Francisco Gomes's books still
for sale in the dead tree version.

Best regards,

João Ventura

 Got some updated info.

The book will be released in July 14th at 20:00. Apparently it costs
€10.. I'll reserve my judgment on this price once I get my hands on it.

I've asked Lajes City Hall for details on how to order outside of
 Portugal.

Thanks for the look!

[AZORES-Genealogy] Signing Name

2017-08-18 Thread Rosemarie Capodicci
It seems that, once again, we have gotten away from signing our names to
our posts. Please sign your first name, at least, to your posts. I find it
really getting crazy when there is a 20 post thread and no names just email
addys to identify who wrote the post! I'm getting too old to try and
remember who is who by their email address!! If you are on gmail, you can
go to settings and scroll down to 'signature' and type in your first name
and anything else you may want to add (I put the places I am researching).
This way you never have to *remember* to sign your name, it will always be
there!
Thank you all,

This is terrible news.

The Portuguese archives are not available from FamilySearch, except for
those with LDS accounts or some rare cases like Braga or Coimbra.

There are books available in CCA where the image is so low resolution that
I might as well be looking at it in Minecraft, and the only possibility to
read them is to go to a FHC and ask for the microfilm.

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Microfilms discontinued

2017-08-18 Thread Richard Francis Pimentel
Ok we are talking about the Church records (baptism, marriage, and obits) that
we currently view on Tombo and CCA. Then If I try to view these records
through Family Search the quality will be poor but if we view them through
Tombo and CCA they will be the same as we see today?

This is terrible news.

The Portuguese archives are not available from FamilySearch, except for those
with LDS accounts or some rare cases like Braga or Coimbra.

There are books available in CCA where the image is so low resolution that I
might as well be looking at it in Minecraft, and the only possibility to read
them is to go to a FHC and ask for the microfilm.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Microfilms discontinued

2017-08-18 Thread Rosemarie Capodicci
Joao, I forgot to mention, if you are in your local FHC, just ask one of
the LDS people to get you into the site with the Azores Records and then
you can search. It is very slow-going and tedious but sometimes looking at
the black on white is easier to read than the scanned docs on the CCA. At
this point, you will not be able to access the records from home.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Microfilms discontinued

2017-08-18 Thread Walt Teixeira
My understanding is that after August 31st there will be no more shipping
of microfilms - period. Records that have already been digitized will be
available at the Family History Centers - on line. Those that have not
been digitized are expected to be done by 2020 when everything the church
has is scheduled to be digitized (all records which were on microfilm). It
is interesting to note that the LDS church has some records that the
Portuguese archives do not (some missing years - Graciosa for one that I
know of).

Indexing is another story. Anyone can volunteer to be an indexer. I have
indexed a number of Portuguese records, mostly from Brazil. If there are
more indexers of Portuguese records, I'm sure that they will continue to
put up more Portuguese records in the queue. That's how to get it moving -
volunteer on FamilySearch.org and look for indexing. You then pick the
project that you want to participate in of those available and you do it at
your own pace and in your spare time.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Translation

2017-08-18 Thread Kellie Crnkovich
Thank you so much for the Sao Jorge Marriage index I am going through it
now and at my first time trying to translate what it is says. I am not
doing very good at figuring this out. Hopefully the more I do the better I
will get. Can someone please translate this record. It is the second
record marriage of Jose Machado de Avila and Maria Francesca de Jesus.
 Thank you so much

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] *****Sao Jorge Marriage Index online

2017-08-18 Thread Richard Francis Pimentel
I will agree with that Susan, I was looking at the microfilm over 20 years ago
and since the records have come on line I have found lots of errors from that
time. Most all for the good.

Subject: Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] *Sao Jorge Marriage Index online

I finally had a chance last night to compare some of the marriages that I
researched years ago in Velas, with the new databases that were worked on by
some dedicated people. I found a couple of corrections that I reported to some
names (I have the advantage of having searched for the children of my ancestors
which helps to validate names). But I also found that I had an error in a
date that the database brought to my attention! So it works both ways and I am
grateful! I originally looked at these records using microfilm and it's great
to be able to enlarge each element Jeesh I know I should go through each
and every record of my ancestry!

Anyway I wanted to give my thanks Jeremy and Kathy and to all who worked on
this database!

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: ***** Ribeira Seca Baptism Index on Azores GenWeb

2017-08-18 Thread climbatree2
There wasn't enough room for Kathy to put the whole xcel columns up. In my
original xcel I listed grandparents (if there were any listed), what
their native place of birth was (if listed), and the parents of the
godparents and/or husbands/wives were listed. Sometimes the record stated
the godfather with a sister or niece or stepdaughter.

I would appreciate corrections. Some of the abbreviated names were best
guesses on my part, until someone started mentioning them here. I haven't
gone back through the records and made corrections. LOL. One of the

That is exactly what it means. The name to the right of the godmother is
the father and or the father and mother of the godparents.
