There was no "ja defuncto" or abbreviations for that after the name. Margaret had it right. I should not be answering emails at 4 a.m.! Joam to JoãoI didn't major languages but the sound that was produced in old Portuguese by the "am" was replaces by the "ão" and the language was modernized.
