Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Help with documents for Manoel Marquez Pereira (1747? -1821)

2016-06-08 Thread Eric Souza
Thank you! I had gone right by it! Ugh! And yes, I would love to learn to
read these better - how often do you go to Salt Lake City?

Here is what I think is the pertinent data ...

11 Nov 1771
Manoel Marques Pereira
Son of Manoel Marques Alfonso and Maria Simoy (?)

Barbara Goularte de Oliveira
daughter of Antão Teixeira and Luzia Goularte

I appreciate the help!

[AZORES-Genealogy] Help with documents for Manoel Marquez Pereira (1747? -1821)

2016-06-07 Thread Eric Souza
I was combing through the obits and found one for a 5th great-hgrandfather,
Manoel Marquez Pereira ...
http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SJR-CH-TOPO-O-1770-1826/SJR-CH-TOPO-O-1770-1826_item1/P290.html

If I am reading this correctly, I think it says he died 26 Jun 1821 ... if
he was 74 at death (I think?), that would mean he was born in 1747ish ...

Since I don't have the records for who his parents were, I looked up the
birth records for 1746 forward, and found one from (again, I think) 1 Jan
1748 (top right) ... wondering if someone could take a look and let me know
if they think these match up? And can you help me identify the parents and
if it says anything else? It looks like the mother would be Barbara Pereira,
http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SJR-CH-TOPO-B-1742-1762/SJR-CH-TOPO-B-1742-1762_item1/P94.html

Thank you!!

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Help with documents for Manoel Marquez Pereira (1747? -1821)

2016-06-07 Thread Eric Souza
Unfortunately no luck so far ... I looked through all of the Topo marriage
records, and couldn't find it ... many of them were in bad shape, so it's
entirely possible that it's there, but just not legible.

While looking through other records, though, I did find something that I
would love all of your experienced eyes (bottom left of this one) ...
http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SJR-CH-TOPO-B-1815-1828/SJR-CH-TOPO-B-1815-1828_item1/P140.html

It shows this is the birth record of Manoel, a grandson (paternally) of
Manoel Marquez Pereira and Barbora Goularte ... but I couldn't make out the
names of the parents ... can someone help there?

Thanks!
- Eric

Fingers crossed! You guys are great - thank you. I'm excited that I'll get
to spend some time dedicated to learning more about all of this in Salt
Lake City.

On a separate note, my wife is from Mexico - I've been able to find some
records through the churches and death records from hospitals, but do you
know anything about if/how Mexican records are kept in Salt Lake City as
well? Obviously I'm going for the Portuguese seminars and to learn from you
guys, but it would be great to dig into that a little as well.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Alexander Souza immigration challenge

2016-06-12 Thread Eric Souza
Very good point. I do have my grandfather's social, so that's a good hint
... I'll look into how to get that. At least, it might let me know his
county of birth, so I wouldn't have to pay for another record and get a No
File Found reply. Could have been born in Alameda for that matter, as the
other Alexander S Borba was in Oakland. And I'll check the Marin Genealogy
Society as well. Or, I could see if maybe a small donation could help
encourage the church to open their books.

It's been a lot of fun, digging into the research - I really appreciate
your suggestions and help!

Another item to note - Alexander had married Mary Catan Mancebo in
Sausalito, and on the 1910 census, I don't see Alex and Mary ... the rest
of the Mancebo family is there, as well as some Souza and Borba families,
but I can't find them in 1910! Wondering if he didn't want to be counted,
if he was there illegally ...

No, I believe these are different Alexanders ... I'm guessing this is my
Alex's godfather, Alexander S Borba, living in the East Bay ... I actually
requested and received their marriage certificate - will look for that and
will scan it to review again.

Interestingly enough, also, there was an Edward Souza born to a Mary Souza
(formerly Rose) in Alameda on 16 Oct 1908, one year before my grandfather's
birth. My grandfather's social security info shows his birth as 21 Oct 1909
... so maybe Godfather has an Edward Souza, and a year later, godson has an
Edward Souza? Something odd there, but that's my assumption ...

[AZORES-Genealogy] Passports on culturacores.azores.gov

2016-06-15 Thread Eric Souza
I haven't looked through the passports on this site yet:
http://www.culturacores.azores.gov.pt/ig/passaportes/Default.aspx

If my ancestors are from Topo, São Jorge, should I be looking at Angra do
Heroísmo? The only options on the site are Ponta Delgada, Angra do Heroísmo
and Horta. Were there no office for passports on São Jorge?

Thanks,
Eric

[AZORES-Genealogy] Jozé? João?

2016-06-21 Thread Eric Souza
Can someone help me identify the name in the bottom left here?
http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SJR-CH-TOPO-B-1801-1815/SJR-CH-TOPO-B-1801-1815_item1/P208.html

I've been poring through the birth records again, and filling in aunts and
uncles ... I think this is João, but might be Jozé? And is it 6 Jun 1813?

Thanks!

2016-06-15 Thread Eric Souza
I've been hunting for a passport for Alexander, and came across this - a
real possibility for Alexander's mother ...

7 Nov 1897
Passport for Rosa Delfina de Borba from Calheta ... headed to New Bedford
...
http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/PASSAPORTES-TER-1896-1902/PASSAPORTES-TER-1896-1902_item1/P53.html

My great-great-grandmother, Roza Delfina was the daughter of Anna Delfina
and António de Sousa de Borba ...

But it says (please correct me if I'm wrong!) she is traveling with her
natural son, Antonio ... I don't have any record of an Antonio, son of Roza
...

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Researching Antónia de São José, daughter of Manoel Jozé da Cunha and Maria de São José, Topo, São Jorge

2016-06-24 Thread Eric Souza
Here is the marriage record for Manoel, her son ...

On 10 January 1875, in Topo, São Jorge Island, Manuel José da Cunha, 32,
single, shoemaker, natural son of Antónia de São José, married to Rosa
Delfina 20, single, legitimate daughter of António de Sousa de Borba and
Ana Delfina, all native of Topo, São Jorge Island. Witnesses were José
Lopes Constantino da Silveira, landowner, and José Vieira de Sousa Enes,
church’s treasurer, all living in the same village. Only the witnesses can
write.

So I assume she was alive - and unmarried? as of 1875, at her son's wedding
...

Thanks Joe - you guys are terrific! I wish I had found this message forum

[AZORES-Genealogy] José António Caetano Mancebo - a wife on São Jorge before immigrating?

2016-04-20 Thread Eric Souza
I've been piecing together my family tree, and with help from João Ventura
(an amazing resource!) I have the birth record for my 2nd
great-grandfather, José António Caetano Mancebo (born March 21, 1846,
Ribeira Seca, São Jorge).

He immigrated to Sausalito, CA, and married Emerenciana Maciel (another
immigrant from São Jorge, born 1860), and had a big family there.

Chatting with a newly-discovered cousin, I was told that the family history
says he had been married previously on São Jorge! Apparently family history
says he had a family there before leaving for the US. So I've been looking
through the Ribeira Seca marriage records , but
haven't yet found any marriage record for him ...

Since I had great success finding help on my great-grandfather Alexander
Souza through this forum (thank you!) I figured I would put this little
dirty laundry tidbit out there to see if anyone has him in their genealogy
or records.

Thank you!

[AZORES-Genealogy] Reason for duplicate record?

2016-06-28 Thread Eric Souza
When looking for the birth record for a great(x5) uncle, I found it ...
twice!
http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SJR-CH-TOPO-B-1762-1780/SJR-CH-TOPO-B-1762-1780_item1/P107.html

Jozé Antonio de Borba in the middle and bottom right.

Anyone know why there would be the duplicate? Pretty handwriting, too.

Thanks,
Eric

[AZORES-Genealogy] Antonio de Souza de Borba obit - Topo - São Jorge

2017-08-02 Thread Eric Souza
Hi friends!

I came across an obituary for Antonio de Souza de Borba. I'm guessing it is
for my 3rd great grandfather, but I don't recognize any other names on here
except for Rita Victoriana, which I believe it says was his second wife?

http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SJR-CH-TOPO-O-1880-1889/SJR-CH-TOPO-O-1880-1889_item1/P20.html

I have my Antonio born 7 Jul 1818 ... can anyone help identify what his age
is listed as here? Anything else interesting?

Muito obrigado!

- Eric

2017-08-02 Thread Eric Souza
Thank you - that's what I thought too for the age, so that's about an eight
year difference ... not impossible it's a mistake. My Antonio had two sons
and a daughter, so that might line up also, if they used masculine for
children, making it seem like all sons.

I'll miss you guys out there too - had a blast last year! Thanks for
thinking of me. :)

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Antonio de Souza de Borba obit - Topo - São Jorge

2017-08-03 Thread Eric Souza
Don - following up on Antonio de Sousa de Borba, here's something else I
found ... for the Antonio dSdB born 1777, married to Izabel Ignacia,
there's a tree on Ancestry by Julie Bettencourt that shows an earlier
marriage for Antonio, to:
Josefa do Rosario (~1773, Topo)

Her records show seven kids between them ... I looked up the first, which
had a birthdate and sure enough, there's a record ...
http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SJR-CH-TOPO-B-1780-1793/SJR-CH-TOPO-B-1780-1793_item1/P116.html

Looks like: Joze, fo de Anto de Sza de Borba, ede (what looks to me like it
could be Josefa do Rozario)

So, looks like our Antonio had another branch. Which you might have known
already, but it's news to me!

Hope your enjoying your trip. I'm quite jealous!

- Eric

[AZORES-Genealogy] Trouble with names ... relatives of João Silveira Leonardo, Sao Jorge

2017-08-11 Thread Eric Souza
I'm having difficulty with some of the names in this record ...

http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SJR-CH-TOPO-B-1870-1879/SJR-CH-TOPO-B-1870-1879_item1/P46.html

16 Nov 1871, João Silveira Leonardo

Specifically, the paternal grandfather ... is that "Mocticho" de Souza
Machado? And paternal grandmother Anna Silveira Leonardo?

Maternal grandparents, Francisco Joze de Azevedo and Marianna Cucicao?

Thanks!

- Eric

Nancy Jean, thanks for your family information ... I see your Agueda's
birth record here ...
http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SJR-CH-TOPO-B-1801-1815/SJR-CH-TOPO-B-1801-1815_item1/P151.html

It's entirely possible my connection with Julie goes through another of the
branches, so that's helpful information, that we likely don't share a DNA
link.

These are such nice records!

2017-08-17 Thread Eric Souza
This is AMAZING!! WOW - what a resource!! Thank you to everyone who worked
on this. I believe it might have just opened up a huge "pai incognito" gap
in my direct paternal line!!

You guys are amazing. Thank you for what must have been countless
hundreds/thousands of hours on this.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Possible breakthrough from Marriage Index - Joze Silveira Luis e Antónia de São José

2017-08-17 Thread Eric Souza
I'd resigned myself to having a dead end in my direct paternal line, *BUT*
... did the new marriage index just help open this up?

I looked up *Antónia de São José*, who was the mother of my great-great
grandfather, *Manuel Jose da Cunha* (13 FEB 1843). Here is Manuel's *birth
record*

 and
translation from João Ventura:

*Manuel, son of unknown father and Antónia de São José, maternal grandson
of Manuel José da Cunha and his wife Maria de São José, all native of Topo,
São Jorge Island, was born on 13 February 1843 and was baptized on the
16th, in Topo, São Jorge Island. Godfather was Manuel José, son of the
maternal grandparents. *

I looked for Antonia's name in the new marriage index, and found a hit ...

*This is a marriage record for Antónia de São José
*,

daughter of Maria de São José. It looks like on 2 Dec 1843, she married *Joze
Silveira Luis*, filho de pai não sabido e de Anna Francisca.

http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SJR-CH-TOPO-C-1828-1853/SJR-CH-TOPO-C-1828-1853_item1/P115.html

This record seems to say that Antónia's mother was Maria de São José and
pai não sabido, but I have records showing Manuel Jose da Cunha as her
father - including in Manuel's birth record, shared above.

*There is a lot in this marriage record that I am not understanding, and I
am hoping someone with more skills than I have can help me out ...*

I tried using Google Translate, for the first part ... not making much
sense, and I fear it's the fault of my inexperienced eyes on the document.

Villa Nova do Topo*

*Joze Silveira Luis, son of an unknown father and Anna Francisca, and
Antonia de Sao Jose, filla de Maria de Sao Jose and father not known, when
born against. On the twelfth day of the month of April of the year one
thousand eight hundred and twenty, and shall be baptized on the fourteenth
day of the month and the year, and the counterpart on the twenty-fifth day
of February of the year one thousand eight hundred and Of eight and fai
baptized in the two days of the month of March of the year of the same year
natura and freguses of this matrix of the new lady of the Rosary of the New
Villa of Topo*

If this is true, then I have likely extended my paternal line to include
Joze Silveira Luis, filho de pai não sabido e de Anna Francisca (at this
point, another pai não sabido, but at least it's another generation?)

THANK YOU to all of the researchers who put together this amazing resource!!

[AZORES-Genealogy] Barbara Victorina obit - Topo, São Jorge

2017-08-10 Thread Eric Souza
Can I get an extra set of eyes on Barbara Victorina's obit?

Here's what I think I get out of it ...

Barbara Victorina - died 29 Apr 1909
83YO
Is the spouse Antonio Machado de Azevedo?
filha de Manuel Machado (Teixeira?) e Maria do Rosaria?

Thanks!

 Hello,

I have long suspected that my ancestor, Antonio de Almada (b. abt.
1800), who came to the United States in 1836 via the whaling industry
 and
settled in New York, originated from Sao Jorge. But for a long time,
 my
suspicion was mostly due to the fact that most people with the Almada
surname seem to come from the area centered around Norte Grande.
 Recently,
however, I stumbled on another clue that provides even more concrete
evidence that that is in fact where Antonio came from.

Several years ago I had my DNA tested on Ancestry.com. It wasn't
until a couple weeks ago while searching through my DNA matches I
 found a
distant cousin who claimed to be descended from a Joao de Sousa de
Almada from Sao Jorge. While I am not descended from this particular
 person
myself, when I trace his genealogy back a couple generations in the
 parish
records, I come to the family of Manoel de Souza de Almada and his
 wife,
Anna. They had a son named Antonio that was born around the right time
 that
my ancestor would have been. And if this Antonio is indeed my
 ancestor,
that would explain my genetic connection to the person on Ancestry.com
 who
said he was descended from Joao de Sousa de Almada - and more
importantly, I would confirm the date and place of my ancestor's
 birth.

But of course, there is also a chance that our link is through a
different ancestor altogether. So the way to prove it would be to find
another known descendant of the Almada family from Norte Grande and
 see if
we're also connected. I notice DNA testing seems to be a major topic
 for
discussion in this group - is there anyone out there who is also
 descended
 from this family?

Appreciate any help anyone can offer. Thanks!

GEDmatch ... that way, no matter where you had your DNA done, you can share
results with people who did it with other companies.

Thank you!! Don't know how I missed that. I'd been focusing too much on the
1822 records ...

Looks like filha de Francisco Texeira Mancebo and Rosa Josefa?

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Ribeira Seca Confession Rolls: José Machado Gomes and Maria Jesus in Ribeira Seca

2017-08-26 Thread Eric Souza
Yes, page 70 of the 1839 rolls shows José Machado Gomes and Maria Jesus
with Margarida and Jose, but without Antonio (who was 18 by then?) and
without their youngest, Teresa ... would definitely be interested in seeing
the '44. Holy cow, there's so much data out there that I don't have!

This group is the best. Thanks for going over this with me. I also wondered

[AZORES-Genealogy] Parents of Antonio Caetano de Azevedo

2017-08-17 Thread Eric Souza
In the top right of this one, for the parents of Antonio Caetano de
Azevedo, I see the pai incognito, but can anyone make out a last name for
his mother? Maria ... ??

http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SJR-CH-RIBEIRASECA-C-1822-1849/SJR-CH-RIBEIRASECA-C-1822-1849_item1/P126.html

This document also confirms for me Barbara Emilia da Silveira's parents -
Antonio Machado Viera and Inacia Rosa Silveira ...

Anything else interesting that you guys can make out?

The marriage index is going to give me SO MUCH to go on. Thank you again,
researchers.
