All,
Thanks so much for the replies and suggestions. I combined all my comments
and updates into one e-mail in order to avoid posting too many individual
posts on the list.
Given the comments I saw on SATA it sounds like using TAP as proposed may
be a good choice. I think I'd like to pass on
Hi Everybody,
I just booked a 2-week open trip to Spain and am hoping to include a swing
through the Azores out of Lisbon maybe for about 3 days. I have so many
questions, looking for advice from those who may have visited. First of
all, it would be wonderful to look up da Silva family on
I'd likely attend if it's held then.

Nice to see some Azores folks here!

Great to see you again today Cheri at SCGS. Tim Janzen also said this
afternoon that they were discounting Y upgrades as well.
I met a couple others from this list group today also: Kathleen Fernandes
and Kalani Mondoy.

Hi Helen,
I have a John Joseph Sylvia who immigrated from Graciosa to the Yreka
area. I have seen references that his surname might have been Cunha. Do
you have a family tree of this line that you wouldn't mind sharing with me?
Thanks!
Ken
psI was going to PM you but noticed your e-mail
I just checked and the freepages sites are still down so I'm wondering if
they might have killed those off. Or, more hopefully, maybe they haven't
gotten that far yet.

FYI, *all* of Rootsweb is down. This includes all the mailing lists,
blogs, websites (including one of the freepages ones that I have had for
some 10 years). Ancestry claims they are working to restore them but have
provided very little information. All of these services have been down
since
Hi Amy,
I would strongly encourage you to download your DNA record from Ancestry
and upload to GEDMatch.com (http://v2.gedmatch.com/login1.php). That is a
wonderful site that I use that has many more tools available than Ancestry
including chromosome browser and triangulation tools. The best

sessions on DNA work scheduled.

Just to follow up to Cheri's note another option is to go to your nearest
Family History Center to get free full access to Ancestry and the census. I
let my Ancestry subscription lapse so I started using FHC's until I happily
discovered the local library option. I take advantage of that often and
I would definitely encourage you to upload to GedMatch.com. I have done so
and it is very useful and has helped me make and confirm links. I would
not be concerned about your DNA data being out on the Internet as it's not
possible for others to download it. I have kits on Ancestry and FTDNA and
I've used PhotoFiltre for years. It's easy to use, free, and does what you
need.

I saw it on this morning's show. It was a very brief part of a much longer
segment. Most importantly it showed a true success story of how you can use
DNA to confirm (or negate) a suspected family connection. This one had a
heartwarming conclusion.
Here's a link to the story and video:
I won this year's software (RootsMagic 7) and just today installed it and

Much thanks go to Cheri, Rosemarie, and Joao for putting on another great
workshop. For those who want to dig deeper into Azorean research this is a
great chance to learn more, especially for those new to the effort. I
found some newspaper and CCA sources that will help me continue my research.

They only have a few rooms left. That is a good room rate. I checked some

I'm tentatively planning on attending and looking forward to it.

Hi Cheri,
If you have a kit # you can send it to me (privately, if you wish) to see
if I can run tests on it. Perhaps it really didn't get stored properly.
Or, perhaps there was an issue with the download.
I've uploaded quite a few records to GEDMatch and they've all been stored
and analyzed
but maybe it can be solved by working together.
Thanks much!

Me too, mine just came in yesterday. Already found two 3rd cousins in there,
one I knew, one I did not. Both of them shared my Azorean heritage. Have been
looking for my Sylvia family in there from Graciosa but so far no luck.
There's a chance that that name might have been de Cunha
from Joao Ventura, and
it's looking like the Sylvias were da Silvas.
Good luck with your search, Ken!

I am also interested in Sylvia's from Graciosa. I have a great-
