Ignore me and the dates. I pointed out the baptism date for some silly
reason. Bill sent in the correction. Thanks, Bill.

Yes, you have the grandparents correct. Yes, next comes the godparents.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Baptismal Record, Nossa Senhora do Amparo, Algarvia, Sao Miguel

2014-09-26 Thread Patricia Straube
Thanks Cheri,
I did as you suggested and looked for siblings. As it turns out, it appears
that Manuel b. 1852 was the youngest child in the family. He had an older
brother, Manuel b. 1842, plus two sisters named Rosa and brothers Antonio
and Francisco. Now I'll have to look in Obitos for the first time. The
oldest child was Maria b. 1838. Their mother's full name was Maria Rosa de
Medeiros. Fortunately the maternal grandparents were listed in all the
other baptisms: Antonio Francisco da Costa and Rosa Maria de Medeiros. It
appears that this is the case where the mother's surname was chosen. Now I
need to translate all these other baptisms. Wish me luck!

On Thursday, September 25, 2014 8:33:59 PM UTC-4, Cheri Mello wrote:

 Patricia S,

Good job translating! Now for your questions.

 1. Are the names of the maternal grandparents missing? I can't find them.
 Why would this be?

Yes, the names of the maternal grandparents are missing. Maybe the priest
 had too much vinho. :)

 2. Were the godparents literal children or were they merely unmarried and
their parents names used to identify them?

They could be children or they could be unmarried. You'd have to research
that family to figure it out.

I'd collect all the siblings of Manuel. You'll see if the mom's name
flips back and forth (Maria Rosa, Maria de Medeiros, Maria Rosa de
Medeiros). And one of the siblings will have the maternal grands.

Hi David,

From what I read it does not show the full name with Coelho, the child was
dedicated to the Holy Spirit, 3rd person of the Trinity, who was the
child's Godfather.

The record reads Manuel do Divino Emperador (of the Divine Emperor,
another name given to the Holy Spirit).

The document reads Godparents:, forao padrinhos o Divino Emperador e o
Reverendo Mestre da Capela Francisco Jose de Bintancourt em nome de etc.
God Parents were the Holy Spirit and the Reverend Master of the Chapel
Francisco in name of ...(names another Priest living in the Terceira island)

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Baptismal Record Question - Sao Matheus, Graciosa

 Hi Margaret,

Thanks, for the translation. It seems interesting that the godfather was
the holy spirit. I don't think I have seen that before.

Also, his full name does list Coelho as his last name from his marriage

Does anyone know how common it is to list a child's name more than just
 the first name??

another name given to the Holy Spirit).

The document reads Godparents:, forao padrinhos o Divino Emperador e o

The interesting thing about the record is that Manuel's full name is
listed in the baptismal record instead of just his first name. How common
was it to list more than just a first name?

I also have a question on who the Padrinhos are? Any info would be
 helpful.

Does Divino Emperador signify anything in particular? Maybe it has to do
with Festa or something along those lines.

 Thanks,

came from Flores and here in the states their surname became Brio...I have been
trying to figure them out for years now...anyway, I was wondering if maybe Brio
was once Barojo???  My ancestors are Jose Francisco Brio and Amelia Candida
Enos.  They eventually ended up in Hawkinsville, Siskiyou County, Calif as gold
miners.

Subject: [AZORES-Genealogy] Baptismal Record Interpretation of Ursula Joaquina
-Nossa Senhora do Rosario, Lajes de Flores, Flores

I am trying to glean some more information off of this baptismal record of one
of my ancestors. Her name is Ursula Joaquina, born 4 Mar 1798 in Lajes de
Flores, Flores. Her mother's name is Izabel and the father is unknown. It
appears the maternal grandparents are Francisco Pel (probably Pimentel) and
Maria Pimentel. I have not been able to find the marriage record for Francisco
and Maria  and hope that this record might give more clues. I am also
interested
in the name of the Padrinhos because I have seen one of the surnames (Baiojo or
Barojo) before but can't make it out. It isays Forao Padrinhos Antonio Pimentel
*Barojo*...I am not sure on this name if I wrote it correctly as I am
unfamiliar
with it. Maybe someone can help with it.

Thanks,

 David
