It's not really clear what you mean by 'digital image'.
The BBB CPU has an in-build ADC subsystem that can sample analog data on up
to 7 channels (input lines) in 12 bit resolution. If you need high sample
rates ('real time') you should have a look at libpruio

Untill now, the maximum transfer rate I could achieve is ~11 MB/s. I've
tried this with different kernels with and without DMA enabled.

I suspect it's not background tasks, but just the overhead of getting from
bonescript to the UART. There are a lot of places that might be causing the
delay. Have you tried sending a single byte from a C program, to see if it's in
the bonescript interpretation?

Back in September I posted about some problems I had getting wifi going on
the BBB. I've taken another shot at it and I (think I) have something
working now. This post also rolls in a few other assorted tidbits
scattered around in other posts. Hope somebody finds this useful.
