We use a very nice freeware app called, The Dude, which is a big part of
our network monitoring. It can be configured to send you an email or
text message when a server is in trouble.

If it really was VMware that hung, shouldn't you be monitoring for
VMware SNMP traps, not BES SNMP traps?
