Those Astron linears (RS Series) are bullet proof units that last forever.
I have an ages old RS-12A that powers all the ancillary equipment on my
desk. It just runs, quiet and RF noise-free!

I bought a small Astron RS-20A when I was first licensed in 1993 and
keep it now for taking to field day or portable. I have been using an
Astron RS-35A since around 1995 when I got into HF and was using 2
radios. It has enough power for an HF radio, satellite radio, the TNC,
and another 2m
See, for example from Dave Casler, https://youtu.be/w4T_Q5gr41c
However, I would suggest a 20-25A supply, in case you ever get your General
and want to power a 100W HF set, along with everything else in your shack.

I'll second that one as well. I've got one that I run MY HF rig on as well as
the small amount of power it takes to run the SWR meter as well. It works
GREAT and is virtually noise free.

Buy one that is made for amateur radio. Astron are good units, but they can be
had from MFJ, Samlex, etc. Just make sure it's "rated" for your use. Some
manufacturers rate them by peak output, and others use continuous output.
(Peak will be higher than continuous). R tends to run specials
Brent,
I have had excellent results using JetStream JTPS - 28. I have 2 and really
like the fan control to reduce the fan noise.

Have multiple 12 volt power supplies at the house but we are in Norfolk, Va.
this week.
I can call and tell you how how to get in and how to find them if you have time
to run by my house.

Another indispensable item for your shack is a
100 W., 50 Ohm dummy load. MFJ sells one for
about $60 + tax and shipping (MFJ-262B, PL-259
connector) . This one is convection air cooled and
will take 100 W. for about 10 Sec. continuous and
is DC to 1 GHz 1:1 SWR. Get this one or one
Gayle,
What’s your SWR? If you’ve got hi SWR the output fold-back circuitry will
reduce output. and you will only see full output in a key-down (CW) mode. Voice
has a low duty factor so you would only see a low average power output in that
circumstance.

Thanks Gary,
Working with it tonight...Home Depot run produced a volt-ohm meter per your
suggestion. I'll run CW and investigate further. Was on the roof all
afternoon with my antenna chasing down RF reported in my signals, glad to

Gayle...you asked aboutthe PS.
Specs -
Current out -- continuous 22 Amps at 13.8 Vdc
Front Panel Adjustable Voltage (9-15 Vdc)
22A continuous is plenty for 100 W xcvr.
Adjust the DC Volt knob for a reading of 13.8V on the meter.
Maybe you are meassuring in the AM mode...bet your rig goes to 50
Thanks will do.

You need to measure the voltage as I indicated with the rig in CW mode into
an antenna or whatever you used before when you measured the power output.
Now a cheap but accurate digital volt-ohm meter will cost as little as $10.
A small investment in your hobby I think.

Gayle,
As Gary suggested, measure the voltage right at the rig.after the fuses and
even maybe inside the rear panel. Should be 13.5v +
If not adjust the mfj for the correct voltage. Voltage drop over a looong
power cord can be a culprit.

Measure the actual under load (100 W. CW) voltage
at the back of the FT-920. Faulty inline fuse holders
or connectors, and wiring losses can cost you 1/2 v. or
more. You need a full 13.5 to 13.8 VDC at the back.
Since power to a R Ohm load is V*V/R, a relative power

Kevin,
I took my two Astron SS25M units overseas. They have a switch for 110/220.
You need a power strip with 220V plug. I got the European 220 plug (as used
in UK) and wired it to an old power strip with 110 plug cut off. This setup
was used in Falkland Islands and Malta.
Some power

I lived in Germany 1989-91. I didn't find any problems using appropriate
voltage transformers. Many power supplies now have a wide input range so you
only need to get the correct plug for that area. The frequency difference might
cause a problem with some time based devices. Have a
