[BVARC] Thank you for a great night

2018-11-09 Thread Rick Hiller -- W5RH via BVARC
A big thank you for a great night last evening at the Chili Supper. 44
folks in attendance enjoyed a wide selection of chili, even the Cajun
style, and a rogue pot of spaghetti. 10 different chili entre's along
with stuff jalapenos (my personal favorite), plenty of add-ons and
condiments, plus a multitude of desserts from fresh apples to cup cakes and
a very dark chocolate cake.

We also had elections. Mark Janzer is again V.P., Scott Medbury is again
a 2 Year At Large Director and Jimmy Vance is the 1 Year At Large
Director. After it was all over Jeff Greer stepped forward to handle the
Corresponding Secretary spot. A special thanks to these folks for stepping
up to the plate to help run the club. Disappointing that we had no one
nominated for the 2019-2020 Treasurer spot. So keep your eyes pealed for a
number cruncher amongst our ranks

Set up and tear down ran smoothly due to the special help of Kelli Medbury
and Daphne Rawlinson. Thank you, Ladies. Many others pitched in to
assist also. The room looked good coming in and going out. All of
your assistance was greatly appreciated.

The lucky raffle winning Ham that now has a Station in a Box is Walter
Bazarsky, W5KFL. Congratulations Walter.

Again, thanks to all for a great evening.

Re: [BVARC] Rick Hiller Controled Standing Wave Antenna

2018-07-08 Thread Rick Hiller -- W5RH via BVARC
John,

Thanks for the note. I, like you, thought that placing capacitors at a
few key points would do the trick, but apparently not. The antennas
referenced in the articles have up to 40 plus capacitors spaced equally
throughout the dipole length. They provide a formula to calculate how
many caps and values and the length of the wire sections in between.

I can pass to you, directly, the articles I have in PDF, which will get you
started. (See the next e-mail) I will try to scan the Antenna Compendium
cookbook article, but it is a weird page size.

[BVARC] FREE HF Antenna Gap Titan DX

2018-03-31 Thread Rick Hiller -- W5RH via BVARC
Hello, all,

I just took down the antennas of our recent SK, Bill McNally, K5YDO. One
of the antennas is a Gap Titan DX Vertical. It is all there, but will
defintely need to be rebuilt. Bill had painted it green, which causes
dis-assembly/assembly problems. Again, and I stress, it requires a bit of
re-work to get back on the air.

First one to claim it via e-mail gets it. Need to pick it up this coming
week in the evening, or pick it up today -- Sunday April 1 before 2PM. You
will need a car top carrier or a pick-up. Longest piece is about 14 feet
long. Others aren't so long. Very heavy mounting pole included. No
manual.

Location of the antenna is my house in Sharpstown. Beltway 8 and
Beechnut.

Re: [BVARC] BVARC -- ABSENCE of a Monday Night Net Control

2018-02-19 Thread Rick Hiller -- W5RH via BVARC
Nope, I meant pearlactually Pearl. You see back in the old West days,
my wife's Great, Great Aunt Pearl was a walking disaster. Nothing for her
ever went right. She grew up in Muleshoe, if you know where that is.
Became a teacher at the local 'one room' after 8 years of college at
Borger A Her students never learned a thing. Her marriage to Buffalo
Bill Cody was a flop. Her 7 children all went to prison and she died
under the wheel of a Conestoga Wagon while trying to cross the Canadian
River with her cattle headed to Comstock. Family legend has it that every
time anyone's troubles got to be more than they could handle, they said
they were "in Pearl". If they were just in a little trouble they called
it a Mini Pearl. Deer in the Pan Handle were named after her. The males
have a strange white growth of hair on their rear ends. Shaped like an S.
They call them Pearl S. Bucks. And there was even a song written about her
-- "Won't You Come Home Pearl Baliey (Won't You Come Home).

So, I stand by my original statement of "the Monday Night Net being in
Pearl" (capitalization typo corrected). And...sure enough it is/was,as I
hear no activity on the 94 machine tonight, of course being just south of
Tomball doesn't help the propagation on 2M. Maybe my radio is deaf.

FYI -- My wife's Great Aunt is named Opal. (really) HI

ps...no ground hogs were injured in the writing of this e-mail

My JOTA comments..

Hey, Eddie(KD5 Beer IS)

I have done lots of JOTA's and Radio merit badge classes. Both in great
propagation times and in poor, such as now. Especially on the 10 meter

So my suggestions to you are: 1) to let us know exactly when you will be

couple of stations as "ringers".friends of yours or others that will be
there for the whole period, just in case no others show up. Hams that have
been thru Cubs and Boy Scouts are preferable, as they know what the Scouts
are doing.

If you can afford it do a colorful certificate for each Cub with the
station call sign, etc and in addition buy some JOTA patches for
themAvailable thru BSA headquarters.

Have a PTT mike for them to use, but you control it with a foot switch...if
you get me drift.
Have simple scripts written down.
Maps of the USA and the world on display.

You might be able to listen on other bands to other Scouts talking.that
is cool too.

Put out a tweet about your operation #JOTA.

There is also the JOTI (Jamboree on the Internet) that runs at the same
time, but I know little about it -- sri.

Jeff, AA(zero)ST texted me today that he and his family were evacuated from
Dickinson on Sunday afternoon. 3 feet of water in their house and cars.
They are now high and dry with a friend.
He noted that he will be off the air for a few weeks.

OK on the 2B...thanks!

A goal is to find a high serial number 26K+ R4C (metal PTO gears) and a
T4XC combomodify with Sherwood filters (ist IF) and other power supply
mods, etc. Now that is the Drake set-up to have. I used to have 2
C-lines...but no more.

Re: [BVARC] Special event call sign rules

2017-07-18 Thread Rick Hiller -- W5RH via BVARC
They can be any valid call sign...KD5AT is OK, for example. A special
event is something you designate, not the FCC or ARRL.

Now, if you want to use a 1x1 for the special event you must apply...but it
does not have to be a special event...we used one for contesting.

[BVARC] KK5W(SK) Items for Sale

2017-07-17 Thread Rick Hiller -- W5RH via BVARC
*Items for Sale – KK5W (SK) Garage*

The following list of Ham Radio related items comes from the garage of
Betty Zermano -- Widow of Dr. Al, KK5W

The “stuff” has been in that garage many years and therefore covered with
dust and time. So, I have gone thru each piece and given it a rating from
10 (best) to 1(worst).

Why I did this --- a lot of this stuff can be resurrected from the Snow
White sleep it has been in for the past many years. A good clean up,
battery replacement, etc. will do it wonders.

Pricing is priced to sell, lower your risk and hopefully cheap enough for
you to take a chance and buy it*. The main goal is $’s for Betty.

Re: [BVARC] [tdxs-list] Fwd: 80 Meter inverted V dipoile

2017-05-09 Thread Rick Hiller -- W5RH via BVARC
Evening Gents...for those that wish to dig a little deeper into the
wide banding issue and see what is happening out there in the contesting
antenna world, let me recommend that you have a look at the 2016 Dayton
Antenna Forum presentation on OWA's -- Optimised Wideband Arrays. He, a
Penn State prof, has gotten some very nice flat SWR responses using some
simple parallel wire techniques. He also looks at the current art 80 and
40 wide banding techniques, including the Bazooka.

*

These wide banding techniques are what is taking over the world in Yagi-Uda
design/implementation. See another Dayton presentation (same K3LR Dayton
page) by Justin Johnson, G0KSC.Wide banding, low noise and direct
matching all at a cost of slightly reduce parasitic gain, and slightly
reduced F/B, but an increase in antenna system efficiency due to the lack
of the lossy matching network (i.e. Gamma, T, Hairpin, etc.). This
technique has been stareing us in the face out of the ARRL Antenna Handbook
since the 50's and only Mosley took advantage of it back then, but never
pushed the details of its' advantages...IMHO.

Another way to broad band an 80 meter dipole is to utilize a Tornado
Loading/matching coil. K3LR highlighted this in his 2017 Greater Houston
Hamfest K3LR Multi-Multi talk. Read about it in the BVARC May newsletter
-- Page 5 --The Radio Hotel column
   *http://bvarc.org/newsletter/201705.pdf
 *

Lots of neat stuff going on in the Amateur antenna design world in the last
decade or so.

Enjoy.73...Rick -- W5RH

Re: [BVARC] Power supply

2017-04-08 Thread Rick Hiller -- W5RH via BVARC
Gayle...you asked aboutthe PS.

Specs -
Current out -- continuous 22 Amps at 13.8 Vdc
Front Panel Adjustable Voltage (9-15 Vdc)

22A continuous is plenty for 100 W xcvr.

Adjust the DC Volt knob for a reading of 13.8V on the meter.

Maybe you are meassuring in the AM mode...bet your rig goes to 50 W max in
AM mode.

Key down CW, max smoke should be 100 W+ into a dummy load or into a matched
>1.5:1 antenna system.

If you do not have a dummy load then you have no knowledge of the Z that
the xmitter output is seeing, so the output is dependent on the Ant/TL Z.

What does the SWR meter in the rig read? Close to 1:1?if higher than
1.5:1 then the xcvr will cut back power out.

Gayle, I am grasping for straws aboveyou have got to establish a base
line in your measurements/operations and to do that you need standards --
dummy load, volt Ohm meter, watt meter, etc. Buying a used rig without the
faculties to measure the performance is not good practise. Get some test
gear and you will improve your Ham Radio experience immensily. Plus you
will understand what is going on when the rig ain't werkin.

Re: [BVARC] Need Concrete/Hole work done for a light Tower Base??

2017-04-07 Thread Rick Hiller -- W5RH via BVARC
Gary, I think I would ask the tower company for engineering specs. Now
you mention a tilt over base/ginpole. Not gonna happen in a 2 by 2 by 2
base. I cannot find any information on the tower on line other than a
brief description in that they just started producing after Dayton 2016.
No manual, no drawings, no detailed specs to speak of.

Question to consider: When it is extended at 31 feet and you have your 45
pounds of rotor and antenna (windload area not known) waving in a brisk,
pre-wx-front breeze...what forces will be exerted 31 feet down the unguyed
tower to the 700 pond base. Overkill is the preferred build method. Keep
Redy-Mix in business.

C'mon folks, if your whole day is consumed by what comes across the BVARC

Jonathan,
No argument taken.I was just chiming in to say what I had heard. You
and Gary are experts in the field of programming IOT devices so I will
leave that to you. I, on the other hand, am an expert in breathing and
eating. I know lots about both HI. Sincerely, I appreciate the comments
of all. There is too much movement within all levels of technology to be
intimate with all of it, so you have to rely on youir friends and, so
called, experts that you hear on the radio, pod casts and Bloomberg TV.
Thanks. Keep up the commentary, it creates chatter about the Ham fest.

Not quite sure why you think that we have a time limit but the HOA does
not. Yes, I read what it says, but I also read what they are required to
do. In either of the requirments list, I do not see the words
"immediately" or 'in 10 days" or "by the next full moon", etc.

Also, again, not kidding this time. "installation", as used in
paragraph Sec 3 b 1, is a verb not a noun. To me, looks like
grandfathering is applicable.

Re: [BVARC] Amateur Radio Parity Act IS THE SAME as last year's version

2017-01-28 Thread Rick Hiller -- W5RH via BVARC
>From W5RH

Question(s) 1 ..Would not this same law make it a federal offense if
the HOA does NOT provide "resonable written rules" or does not "constitute
(establish) the minimum practicible restrition". Wouldn't they be in
violation of federal law if they continue to "preclude amateur radio on its
face or as applied" ? (See constitutional law definition.) Would they not
be in violation if they fail to permit licensee to "install and maintain an
effective outdoor antenna on property under the exclusive use or control of
the licensee"?

There are statutes in this law that require the HOA to do certain things
under the law. If they don't do these things, would this not make them in
vilolation of federal law?

Question 2...why have we not heard from the legal minds within BVARC or
TDXS or even ARRL? I know we have lawyers within each of the clubs. ARRL
has a lawyer who stated that it is a good law and would be willing to have
a phone conversation with ITT (I think). Did this ever happen? BVARC
members have voiced opposition (me too) to the ARRL BOD members, etc. and
have yet to receive any kind of response in return. These BOD folks are
hams just like us, they belong to the same organization and they are
volunteers, yes, but their division constituants deserve at least some type
of "thanks for your comment" response. Even better would be a
knowledgeable reply to our concerns. Has anyone received such?

I have read Pete's expose and do not disagree, but then I read thru HR 555
and, using the Google'd laymen's terminology translations for the legal
verbiage, tried to apply some untainted logic. See Question(s) 1 above.

Yes, I agree that existing (and future) antennas would be in violation of
this law if not approved by the HOA authority, but I also see that the HOA
is under certain requirements of this law to provide their
constituant/member/the Ham certain specific allowances.

Re: [BVARC] Another new homemade number 2 antenna as of today

2017-01-12 Thread Rick Hiller -- W5RH via BVARC
Since you made 2 dipoles, are you sure you put the 10 meter dipole up at 20
feet and are measuring it and not the 6 meter dipole? BTW, what does the
6 meter dipole show for SWR?

1) If indeed the 10 meter dipole up there, disconnect the coax at the
antenna and place your dummy load on the antenna end of the coax and see if
your 920 sees a low SWR at the shack end of the coax. Nothing like a bad
piece of coax to ruin antenna experimentation. Measure it at 80 meters all
the way thru even 6 meters if you can, just to see.

2) f you have another SWR/power meter put it at the dummy load end and see
what kind of losses you have. Compare the transmit end power to the dummy
load end power. If you have lossy coax, the SWR at the radio should be
much better than at the antenna...which is a BAD situation, as it looks
good but it is not.

3) Bring the antenna down to close to the ground so yuou can reach it. Use
a very short piece of coax to connect the antenna feed point to the radio
or your antenna analyzer.Good? Still bad??? If bad then the antenna
is a reactive dummy load. Start over.

Re: [BVARC] Home built 6 meter 5/8 wave vertical

2017-01-08 Thread Rick Hiller -- W5RH via BVARC
Using 52 MHz for the design freq...your lengths are off.

A typical 5/8wl ground plane is a total of 1 wl worth of vertical,
matching/loading coil and gp radials all in series.

Feed point is shield to the radial set / bottom of coil point and the coax
center to a tap up the coil at the 50 ohm point.

Vertical should be 5/8 wl or about 11.5 feet. The matching / loading coil
makes up an electrical 1/8 wl and the GP radials make up 1/4 wl or about
4.5 feet (54 inches). The coil turns/size/etc.can be figured using the
ARRL Antenna Handbook and the charts for a loaded dipole of 50% length and
coil at the center feedpoint...divided by 2.

I have always found that 5/8ths systems are tricky to homebrew and get
tunedbut that is just me. Use a GDO to see what your system resonance
is. Once you get resonance to 52 (or so) MHz, then you can start matching
the coax...but you got to get the lengths right first.

Hope this helps.GL and 73...W5RH

Re: [BVARC] Yaesu FT-900 off frequency

2016-12-30 Thread Rick Hiller -- W5RH via BVARC
Gayle,

On this radio the SHIFT is IF Shift...not frequency RIT or XIT...The
CLAR (clarifier button pushed in) enables frequency shifting for
receive.just make sure that this CLAR button is OFF, so that no shift
in frequency is applied to the VFO freq. This can be seen on the display.

NOTE: FYI -- IF SHIFT is a way to move the receive IF bandpass in order to
eliminate interference -- QRM mostly.

This is all in the manual Page 25 under Clarifier (Receiver Offset Tuning)
and on page 49 fold out --Clarifer block.

One way to confirm claibration is to go to WWV at 5,10,15 or 20 MHZ.
Example -- 15.00MHz. Using SSB (upper or lower -- machs nichts) you
will hear a solid carrier constant tone (low frequency audio) underneath
the beeps or the announcements. . Tune down or up to eliminate the
carrier tone (close to zero hertz audio) and see if your display is at
15.0or 10....or 20. wherever freq you use.

Pretty straight forward. GL and 73...W5RH

In the latest ARRL Letter there is a reference to a triad of videos from

I have listened to all 3 and part 1 is about spectrum regulation

For contesting, also try kids voices (either gender), VFO shift 150 Hz high
(or low -- depending on SSB mode) and distortion -- by over driving the
microphone amplifier or turning up the compression to uncomfortable levels.
A few local contesters have tried the latter option and claim success.

[BVARC] BVARC Elections

2016-11-10 Thread Rick Hiller -- W5RH via BVARC
With DJT firmly in office, as of Jan 20, it is time for all BVARC members
to consider joining him in an elected office position on the BVARC Board of
Directors.

VP, Treasurer, 1 Year At Large and 2 Year At Large are all open for
nominations.

For those who have never been on the BOD, it is fun, quite easy and it
gives you insight into how BVARC runs and, most importantly, gives you a
say in what happens. For those who have been on the board previously, it
was fun the first time, so how about doing another stint?

*E-mail me at wn3...@gmail.com or
rickhille...@gmail.com ,* if you would like to
volunteer to run or you would like to nominate someone. There will be a
period tonight, pre-voting, for floor nominations, but that will be your
absolute last chance to get your favorite Ham, or yourself, on the BVARC
ballot.

My *cell is 832-474-3713*, should you wish to discuss any of the offices
and their commitments.
TNX ES 73.Rick -- W5RH

psso far, there has been quite a dirth of candidates, outside of the 2
members that have positively committed.

Club elections will be held at the November meeting. I, W5RH, am the

Kirk—KK2Z and Mike -- N5VCX.

As all Board of Director's positions are elected positions, we are looking

The Great Druid Cleansing Give Away had lots of attendees. Thank you all

the non-taker list. If that happens twice you are branded for life HI.)

FYI -- the remaining stuff went to the dumpster as promised.

One thing that didn't get taken is a 35 foot push up TV type galvanized
mast, which is extra to my needs. These are sought after by folks to put
up there VHF antennas and even lightweight Hex type Yagis. This will go
in the heavy trash next Monday if no one comes by to claim it by this

I hate to see it go to scrap, when a new one is in the $75 range.

[BVARC] DUBUS Magazine Articles

2016-10-04 Thread Rick Hiller -- W5RH via BVARC
Hey, all,

Does anyone in the club subscribe to DUBUS technical magazine out of Europe?

I am interested in some articles from the past 3 to 4 years.

Or even the Technik book compendiums for those years. They would work too.

Contact me off line if you do and if I could access your copies for a short.

Thanks and 73.W5RH

[BVARC] W5RH -- The Big Give Away -- Lughnasadh

2016-09-25 Thread Rick Hiller -- W5RH via BVARC
October denotes Lughnasadh the "month of cleansing of material things" in
the Druid religion, which I practise on alternate leap years (this
year!). Hence, I will start off October with what the Druids call a
"Behgiivahhwauughh" -or as we know it - a Big Give Away.

Why? Other than following the teachings of the great Druid King,YoYo Mah,
I simply have lots of Ham Radio "Junque" that needs to go. Junque is the
operative term meaning stuff you have hanging around just waiting for the
day you need it to fix your __ (fill in the blank)

Well, The W5RH garage, for about 25 years, has been the catch-all for many
a random or lost pieces of RF associated parts and pieces. If I ever was
to use every one of these pieces it would take me into the 22nd Century,
and I don't think the current RH physical body will last that long. I will
say, however, that the Junque box has been the saviour of many a wayward
Ham looking for just the right piece of Junque to fix her or his
  (again, fill in the blank.)

So...in light of this epiphany, I will be lining my drive way with all
types of bits and pieces of Ham Radio Junque on Saturday, October 1 from
8:30 until 11;30 AM . The bulk of it is all good stuff,
free for the taking, but there will be some better stuff for sale at very
reasonable prices.

I will not be providing a complete list, or even a partial list. but in
general, if it has to do with Ham Radio, it'll be there...coax, masts,
aluminum, wire, parts, project boxes, books, old catalogs, boat anchor
stuff, manuals, antennas, test equipment, speakers, microphones, patch
cords, audio cords, headlphones, meters, etc., etc., etc.

Where: 9031 Troulon Drive Sharpstown/Houston 77036
3 blocks west of Gessner, 1 block south of Beechnut.
First Street South of Beechnut -- equi-distant from either
59 or BW 8.

Talk-in 146.94, but response not guaranteed. Please,no earlier than 8:30,
we have a "No Ham Zone" designation in my neighborhood before 8:30 on
Saturdays.
