our area. There has been a large flock,(~50) visiting feeders at Lake Como
again this winter.

I found one fast moving flock of ~60 Snow Buntings on Mt. Pleasant today. They
were hard to track down and you might have to traipse around the fields at the
top of the hill by the cell towers.
I only heard one Horned Lark but the usual large Crow flock is in their spot in

I was able to find the Northern Gannet this morning about 9:45. It was swimming
far to the north of Seneca Marina. I scanned from Clute Park at 60x. The huge
size jumped out especially compared to the Common Loons nearby. An incredible
bird for the lake and a wonderful find by the Gregoire's.
After watching the wonderful Purple Sandpiper this afternoon I thought of going
back to Ithaca and chasing the Black Scoter.
I stopped first to the Marina and was pleasantly surprised to see 7 Black
Scoters flying in tight formation up the lake past the point. There were also 9
Surf Scoters, 3
Keep your eyes open today around Spencer and beyond. I just talked with a
friend that saw a possible WOOD STORK in a field apparently waiting out the
heavy rain. It has flown and was not relocated.

I made a loop around the park after work today. There still weren’t
many migrant birds at the swan pen, but I did find one Western Palm Warbler
with a few Chickadees. There was one vociferous Fish Crow on the peninsula with
white tag 06.

Martins and Chimney Swifts. The numbers aren't huge,

I had my FOY Northern Rough-winged Swallows mixed with Tree Swallows Friday in

My friend Dave Roman alerted me to the fact that crow sledding
is a popular winter activity in some parts of the world. It made me wonder if
Kevin McGowan had witnessed similar winter sports action in North America.
I was wondering who's tracks I followed. The same mix of winter field birds
were on Cornell Lane in Dryden with viewing somewhat easier. There was also a

stop at the boathouse parking lot. One scan across the water not blocked by
tree branches yielded 58 C. Loons. I thought I saw a Red-throated Loon in the

As I was studying the two Ibis at Benning Marsh around 6:15pm a photographer
arrived, wiggled his bulk up through the sunroof of the van, slapped down a
sandbag , hauled up his giant lens and managed to spook the Ibis away to the

One of our many stops today was Mud Lock. Ann, Dave, Susan and myself had good
views of one Red-headed Woodpecker today in the snags south of the dam. With
the two at May's Point it was a 3 RHWO day. There may be more than one at Mud

Today was the jackpot with a bonus after three trips looking for Worm-eating
Warblers. I broke with routine and walked in on the RR tracks at
Lindsay-Parson's Preserve to the blue trail.
Two Worm-eating Warblers were on the back of the blue trail feeding low and

I made another trip to look for Worm-eating Warbler this morning above
Station Rd. While I had no luck finding one it was an active birdy morning to
be out with territories defended and insects consumed.
I was able to add a couple year birds in the woods and on Bald Hill
Road.
I have them regularly over the yard, Slaterville/Burns Rd., and am sure they're
nesting close by. The local crows never miss a chance to gang up on them this

I couldn't get motivated to drive to Montezuma today so instead started
my birding at Hawthorn Orchard. The main area was quiet until I followed some
mobbing BLUE JAYS to find them harassing a RED-SHOULDERED HAWK. There were all

Driving back from Rochester, after visiting Pine Grosbeaks Friday, I was able
to scan a little at dusk from Cayuga Lake SP. The Tundra Swans are starting to
build in numbers with over 100 just south of the park. I watched a feeding line
made up of 60 Red-breasted Mergansers and 50 Bonaparte's

I spent time on East Road today, but later than Drew's report. Around noon I

I spent a hour at Treman Marina after work. The two juvenile Ospreys
eventually came back to the nest loudly begging for at least 20 mins. The adult
was cruising the shoreline, but never responded. I guess they thought there's
always hope for a home delivered meal if you're loud enough.

The grass mat at Hog Hole is getting very nice, especially if you don't
have a scope. There were a handful of Least Sandpipers, one Semi-palmated

I haven't see any Pelicans yet at Tschache or Knox-Marcellus marsh. If. Of
course the veg is very high there and could easily hide the largest birds.
The only new birds for me are Black-bellied Plover at East Rd. There are many
birds and the viewing will be better late when the sun goes down.
I spent most of the day around the marsh with Brad Carlson, Kendra Carter, Mike
and Joann Tetlow without finding the Curlew Sandpiper.
I agree with Brad that it still could be there. We did do a lot of scanning but
the distances are great and the light is iffy. When a Northern Harrier put the
Tom Johnson and Chris Wood reported ,a few minutes ago, a curlew sandpiper
adult male at Knox-Marcellus marsh from East Rd. (TBJ, CLW)

I wasn't able to find the Willet this morning. There are Least Sandpipers and a
couple of Semi-palmated and one Caspian Tern.
I'm hoping it will show up again later.

The Dickcissel was singing, briefly, at the intersection of Main Loop
trail and Oak Tree Pass trail, NW corner at 3:30 this afternoon. I was unable
to get looks at it and of course it was about 15 minutes after Jean Skelley
(sp.) from Rochester had left. Sorry Jean, good luck tomorrow.

nest findings. While birding Saturday I found an Orchard Oriole nest at Salt
