I'm very glad that John Confer weighed in with a scientist's perspective on the
use of playback, as this perspective is rarely heard in this oft-debated topic.
I agree with John completely that the use of playback to attract birds, even
during the breeding season, has little if any
Yesterday afternoon, I saw at least 4 PALM WARBLERS at the swan pen at Stewart
Park -- 3 were dull Western Palm Warblers and 1 was a very bright Eastern
Palm Warbler, making for an excellent comparison of these two taxa that might
someday constitute a new split. These were hunkering from the
this morning I had my first SPOTTED SANDPIPER by the swan pen at Stewart Park.
Nothing much else besides a few YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS and BLUE-GRAY
GNATCATCHERS. On Tuesday I had a migrant FIELD SPARROW there, which flew up

I decided to check the migration from Mt. Pleasant today between 10:30 and
12:30. Flocks of geese filled the sky in every direction, but not as
concentrated as yesterday's mid-day movement. I suspect that I missed much of
the movement, especially of Snows as many flocks passed over as I headed

window continuously -- Marshall Iliff dutifully counted roughly 18,800 birds

the male EURASIAN WIGEON was still on the ice edge at the SW corner of Cayuga
Lake at about 12:30 today -- behaving much as Ben reported, walking up on the
ice and not associating with the American Wigeons nearby. Difficult looks
through the trees from Rt. 89, but a beautiful bird.

This morning I drove several roads in Lansing, looking for open country birds.
Highlights were on Buck Rd: at #648, west of Van Nostrand Rd., I was surprised
to see a YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER hanging on a frozen apple in the crown of a
heavily laden tree -- it eventually dropped off and flew
For those traveling out of Syracuse, a very white SNOWY OWL was sitting on the
Park N Ride'sign just south of the Tully exit in 81; and another is now
visible sitting on an orange wind sock outside the passenger terminal at
Syracuse airport.

I birded at East Shore Park on Saturday mid-day, and at Stewart Park this
morning -- I must say that I have never seen so much hunting pressure at the
south end of the lake. I want to say clearly that I am not against legal duck
hunting in well managed areas (and I buy a Migratory Bird Stamp to
[Clearly something happened to by CayugaBirds post last night -- this is what I
had meant to send]
In the past 3 days I've found two OREGON JUNCOS - the very rare western form of
Dark-yed Juno -- near Groton on Booth Rd. on the Cortland CBC on Saturday, and
this morning on Doolittle Rd in the
Junco from the
Montezuma CBC (and will clean up my eBird checklist and flickr site).

Before heading out of town at mid-day for the holidays, I noted the lingering
CHIPPING SPARROW under my feeders at home, and a lingering GRAY CATBIRD on the
trail east of Arrowwood Drive -- one of two I found last week feeding on the
plentiful poison ivy and other berries in the understory of

Lots of birds migrating today! I spent a couple of hours (7-9ish) at Myer's
Point this morning -- Jay McGowan was there before I got there and after I
left, so he will have more complete list. Birds were moving virtually
everywhere we looked -- not huge numbers but good diversity and fairly

At 11:30 the single BRANT had joined the Canada Goose flock and decided to be
tame and walk around the parking lots- I got within 20 feet or so. An adult
LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL appeared with the many Herring gulls that were
dropping out of the sky onto the lake- presumably arriving from the
Surprisingly big. (for the late date) thrush flight going on right now - mostly
Swainsons. Heard Greater Yellowlegs and Green Heron. Big glow from the Cornell
stadium - must be awesome there now.

Suan's post about the mystery triller at Lindsay Parsons (which I guess to be a
Yellow-rumped Warbler) prompts me to relate an experience from this morning
along the Signal Mountain road through Yellow Barn Forest.
I heard several trilling DARK-EYED JUNCOS along this road, and was keeping
I should add that in all the years I spent scouting for the World Series of
Birding in New Jersey, in similar mixed hardwood forests at High Point and
Stokes State forest, we couldn't buy a junco! Nearly all the trillers there are
Chipping Sparrows, even in the deep forest (apparently due to

I'm surprised others haven't posted the results of various sky counts today.
Mine started with an adult BROAD-WINGED HAWK circling over the Northeast Ithaca
neighborhood, and at least 5 more streaming over as I walked from the parking
lots o the Lab of O.
Heading out for a late lunch and
I decided to hit water and field areas around Dryden this morning. May have
missed early morning fallout as 18 DC CORMORANTS were circling away as I
arrived. There were 15 HORNED GREBES and 9 PIED BILLEDS were good counts for
there. Also 1 COM LOON and 20 or so BUFFLEHEADS.

Given the weather and the winds I decided to do a Lakewatch from Long Point
State Par, arriving around 8 am. It was almost too windy to stand and look
through a scope but I was able to huddle on the lee side of the small

at Sapsucker Woods.
I noticed a flock of birds dropping into a bare treetop outside my office
window — raising my binoculars I saw that they were waxwings and counted 16.
