Cayuga-birders,
As of 10 minutes ago, two juvenile Red-necked Phalaropes continued at
Stewart Park. They are not in basic (winter gray) plumage, being
dark-backed with pale streaks on the back/ scapulars (juvenal feathers).
Both juvenile birds that I saw today (1 of the original 4 was a molting

Woods, Ithaca this evening around 5 pm. The bird was refound and seen about
20 minutes ago on the Wilson Trail North by the bridge. It was feeding
inconspicuously within 10 feet of the ground but generally associating

This is a bit of a late post, but Tim Lenz and I watched and photographed a
very cool Merlin yesterday morning just south of the Lake Ridge Rd./ Lake
Rd. intersection south of Aurora perched on roadside utility poles and in
flight. I think that this is the darkest Merlin I've ever

The Greater White-fronted Goose continued this morning at Myers Point
in Lansing. It was initially quite close inside the lighthouse marina
but moved over to Ladoga Point eventually.

A new Glaucous Gull (1st cycle) was at the Stevenson Rd. compost
piles in Dryden today. Aside from a few hundred Redhead in the
southeast corner of Cayuga Lake in Ithaca and 2 Snow Geese at Myers
Point in Lansing, things were pretty quiet.

I visited Stewart Park this afternoon between 3 and 4:30 and also had
a nice variety of species. While many of my counts are similar to
those Chris et al. made earlier, I did note a few big differences in
the afternoon. These were a big flock of 74 Hooded Mergansers near
the Fall

Jay McGowan, Shawn Billerman, and I looked for the big flocks of Snow
Geese in the Montezuma/ Savannah area this morning without success
(similar to Steve's report). We did see a massive flock of ~13,000
Northern Pintail (conservative estimate not counting many birds in the

I forgot to post about an early Chipping Sparrow that was hanging
around the front feeders and parking lot yesterday at the Lab of O,
Sapsucker Woods. Mary Winston mentioned it to me in the afternoon,
and I heard and saw it around 6:30 pm. Notably, this is around 2
weeks early for

I saw a pair of Merlins taking amorous dives at each other on the
Dryden side of Sapsucker Woods this afternoon. The male and female
were chattering excitedly just like the pair that has been reclaiming
its previous territory near my house on the edge of Cayuga Heights on
was in a Norway spruce.

the Cornell ponds north of the Ithaca airport in Lansing today. It is
interesting that a few showed up in different places in the Basin
today, as we are still ~2 weeks before the average arrival date.

[crecca] carolinensis) and Common Teal (Anas [crecca] crecca)

So far this morning, I've seen a pair of Surf Scoters at East Shore
Park, Ithaca, and a male White-winged Scoter at Dryden Lake, Dryden

Jay McGowan and I checked a few spots around the south end of Cayuga
Lake and south Ithaca this morning with the following minor
highlights:
-Cliff Swallow - 1 perched with other swallows on the green structure
in the lake just south of Myers Point Lighthouse, Lansing

I found a singing Whip-poor-will this evening on West Jersey Hill Rd.,
Danby (within sallying distance of the Ithaca town line). I arrived
just before 8:30 and I heard the bird sing from 8:34-8:39. After I

Around 10 am today I saw one Black Vulture heading north slowly over
the towers on Mount Pleasant (Town of Dryden) while I was checking
Tree Swallow boxes. No idea if we have one bird hanging around or if
multiple individuals are involved, but I suspect the latter.

heading to Summerhill SF near Groton, the Montezuma marshes, and
eventually West Danby. Here are some brief highlights:
Acadian Flycatcher - 1 at traditional Ford Hill Rd., Lansingville site
carrying nest material
A lovely WR Sandpiper dropped in to the spit at Myers Point at 545 AM
with two Least Sandpipers.

I got to Myers Point in Lansing early this morning and stayed from
5:30-7:30 AM. Highlights among 58 species were single passing
Black-bellied Plover and White-rumped Sandpiper (this bird flew in and
stayed for half an hour with a few Least Sandpipers before heading out
to the
Cayugabirders,
Sadly, I found a male Prothonotary Warbler on Forest Home Dr. in
Ithaca yesterday evening right along Fall Creek. Other than not being
alive, the bird is in good shape and will be preserved as a specimen
at the CU Museum of Vertebrates.
I'm not sure when the last one was seen in
Cayugabirders,
I'd recommend looking on OneidaBirds listserv for further updates, but
the Black-bellied Whistling-Ducks flew off to the west from the
previously reported site on Oneida Lake before dusk tonight. Jay
McGowan and I viewed them earlier this evening.

For a morning update - the godwit is still present at the Montezuma
NWR visitor center as of 7:24, reported by Gary Kohlenberg. Last
night a Wilson's Phalarope dropped in next to the godwit briefly
before both birds took off. It sounds like at least the godwit came

I saw a few interesting birds at Myers Point in Lansing this morning.
A few shorebirds included Semipalmated Plover (2) and a flyby Dunlin.
The one that got away was a medium Sterna tern that *might* have
been an adult Arctic Tern that I watched pass from south to north

A very large flock of swallows and swifts was feeding over Cayuga Lake
out from Stewart and East Shore Parks in Ithaca this morning just
before 11 AM in the heavy rain. Though all local species were
represented (2 Cliff Swallow, 1 Purple Martin included), particularly

Punctuated by a break to watch the heartbreaking World Cup
quarterfinal match, Chris Wiley, Tim Lenz, Jay McGowan, and I birded
around Seneca Falls and Montezuma this morning. The clear highlight
was an adult Tundra Swan loafing close to the tower at Tschache Pool,
Montezuma NWR.
All,
Chris Wood, Jessie Barry, Matt Medler, and I birded around the
Montezuma area (Seneca/ Wayne Co.) this evening (Friday 16 July). We
had some excellent birds thanks to some nice picks by Chris. The
continuing adult Tundra Swan was standing on a log next to the
observation tower at Tschache
I left out 39 Short-billed Dowitchers from the shorebird tally at East
Rd. MNWR. All but one appeared to be prairie birds.

A Pectoral Sandpiper and a Lesser Yellowlegs were feeding in the
puddles on the lawn and a Greater Yellowlegs flew by. It would be
interesting to know if anything stopped in with the passage of the
front.

the east side of Cayuga Lake north of Union Springs. The bird is with a
