[cayugabirds-l] Red-necked Grebe: Beaver Pond South of Dryden Village

2024-04-06 Thread Christopher T. Tessaglia-Hymes
There is a transitional plumage Red-necked Grebe on the beaver pond just south
of Village of Dryden (between Bridle Ln and Crystal Dr) along Route 38, between
Jim Schug Trail and Route 38.

Also, at Dryden Lake a single male Ruddy Duck sleeping and a breeding plumage
Horned Grebe among Ring-necked Ducks along opposite shoreline.

Sincerely,
Chris T-H

Re: [cayugabirds-l] RED NECKED GREBE AT SALT POINT

2016-11-13 Thread Suan Yong
Meant to send this to the list, but replied to Stuart alone instead. At 2pm:
Red necked grebe probably closer to and best viewed from Taughannock now. My
paddling up to see it ended up nudging it in that direction.

--

Earlier, at Park Preserve South there was a chickadee with an entirely white
head, in the area where the main trail intersects with the orange trail heading
into the spruces. May be interesting to observe its territorial range if others
find it.

[cayugabirds-l] Red-necked Grebe, hybrid gull

2015-01-26 Thread Jay McGowan
Hi all,
Sorry for the late post. A quick check of East Shore Park this morning
yielded a distant RED-NECKED GREBE in the shimmer to the far northwest. I
was able to get a better look from East Shore Drive a bit to the north to
confirm the identification. I didn't see any white-winged gulls in the few
hundred on the ice, but did see an apparent HERRING x GREAT BLACK-BACKED
GULL hybird, also present at the compost yesterday, and perhaps the same
bird that was around in late 2014. It is quite large and flat-headed with a
Lesser Black-backed -like dark gray mantle. Too large (and pink-legged) for
Lesser Black-backed and wing pattern wrong for Slaty-backed. A cool-looking
bird, though, and worth keeping an eye out for. I haven't gotten any good
shots so far this time around, but these two lists have some distant
pictures illustrating what to look for:
http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S21535139
http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S21549463

I see on eBird that Chris Wood and others had the Glaucous Gull and both an
adult and immature ICELAND GULL at the compost at lunch time today.

Also, for what's it's worth, on the way back from Rochester last Monday,
Livia and I stopped at the Geneva waterfront to check for gulls and ducks.
In the flock of ~1000 gulls on the shore, we picked out at least four
Iceland, two Glaucous, and a Lesser Black-backed. This spot has often been
good for white-winged gulls, and it seems this year is no exception.

Cheers,
Jay

[cayugabirds-l] Red-necked Grebe

2015-01-19 Thread bob mcguire
Several of us travelled around the lake yesterday, picking up a few new birds
for the year.

The TUFTED DUCK was easy to observe (sleeping) after Dave Nutter again spotted
it from along Rt 89. Gary Kohlenberg re-found the single Black Scoter in close
to the ice edge at Hog Hole. Also present in the SW corner of the lake were
several Ring-necked Ducks, Ruddy Ducks, a large number of Common Mergansers, a
few Canavsbacks, and a large portion of the huge Redhead flock that is
wintering on the lake.

>From the boathouse in Aurora we found 9 Horned Grebes but could not locate the
>Eared Grebe.

The ice edge was just north of Farley’s point and yet, surprisingly, the ponds
in Union Springs were nearly empty. We could not locate the Green-winged Teal
of the week before.

In mid-afternoon we received a call from Stu Krasnoff about a
suspicious-looking grebe at Dean’s Cove. It turned out to be a Red-necked
Grebe. And present for I-don’t-know-how- many years, the Lesser Black-backed
Gull was easily located straight out from the jetty.

I had heard, perhaps incorrectly, that Steve's group's Red-necked Grebe on the
SFO Montezuma overnight trip was at Van Dyne Spoor Road. At any rate I did not
see it then, and only found the one at Carncross Roat on 25 May which is when
eBird reports for it start. I don't think it could've hidden at Carncross Road
from eBird reporters for over a month, although maybe if it can fly and moved
from the Morgan Road impoundment or Van Dyne Spoor Road it may have been able
to remain undetected. I don't know if high waters would've allowed it to swim
between those places, but I don't think it would've walked, as injured geese
do. There's been a lot of migration lately, so I'm not convinced this late bird
is such a long-term visitor or injured bird. Snow Geese, however, typically do
stay over after being wounded by hunters, and the Snow Goose at Carncross, even
though it can fly now, I would readily believe has convalesced locally. But I
think grebes aren't supposed to be hunted and so I think they aren't as
typically injured by hunters. That's my speculation.

PS: Past few days, on a few occasions, I have had fledglings calling in the
early morning around my house. One day it sounded like as if it was in my
yard, I was still in the bed. But by the time I got up and went out to look for
them they had become quiet, so probably moved away.
