Ken Kemphues and I drove up the lake yesterday see what we could find. With the
Loon Watch just two weeks away, I was curious to see what there was in the way
of loons and grebes - and ducks, on the lake.
We had a couple of Common Loons at Long point SP and a few more in Aurora Bay.
No grebes
This afternoon I birded from Lansing up the lake to the Montezuma area.
Below the Long Point Winery I found a graceful female N Harrier, then a pair of
Ospreys in their nest platform @ ~# 1950 above the lake.
Then I saw a bunch of small gulls over & on the water & found them to be
Bonaparte’s,
Ken, Diane, and I drove up the lake today in search of migrants. I am sorry
that we were not able to invite others as it would have meant a long string of
cars. It was a great day to be out, and there were lots of parties along the
Wildlife Drive.

Ton and I drove north from Dryden to Montezuma NWR today to see what was
around. We started at home on Hunt Hill Rd and our first stop after that was
Sapsucker Woods. There we found one WOODDUCK, one PIED BILLED GREBE, one SWAMP
SPARROW and several BLUE BIRDS among the regulars
A few quick notes from a trip up the lake:Frontenac Harbor (formerly Castelli's Marina) in Union Springs: 9 (nine) COMMON TERNS on the break wallLarues had at least120 DUNLIN,3 GREATER YELLOWLEGS,8 LESSER YELLOWLEGS,1 SOLITARY SANDPIPER,1 SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER,2 SPOTTED SANDPIPERS,and an
Judy Thoroughman, John, Confer, and I drove up the lake Sunday,
leaving Ithaca a little after 11 am. Our first stop was to view the
breakwater at the marina in Union Springs (best seen from Rt 90,
looking out between houses). Hoping for terns, we did find one
juvenile Caspian along with
No Eared Grebes in Aurora, but 3 Horned. Many Red-breasted Mergs around
the lake shore. 3 Mute Swans and a thousand Tundras, but just couldn't make
one into a Trumpeter. There was a handsome Hooded Merg. too, up in the
village of Cayuga. Bluebirds, Kestrels, etc. and gas is $2.70/9 in
